¹ And David made him houses in the city of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched for it a tent.
² Then David said, None ought to carry the ark of God but the Levites: for them hath the LORD chosen to carry the ark of God, and to minister unto him for ever.
³ And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of the LORD unto his place, which he had prepared for it.
⁴ And David assembled the children of Aaron, and the Levites:
⁵ Of the sons of Kohath; Uriel the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twenty:
⁶ Of the sons of Merari; Asaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred and twenty:
⁷ Of the sons of Gershom; Joel the chief and his brethren an hundred and thirty:
⁸ Of the sons of Elizaphan; Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren two hundred:
⁹ Of the sons of Hebron; Eliel the chief, and his brethren fourscore:
¹⁰ Of the sons of Uzziel; Amminadab the chief, and his brethren an hundred and twelve.
¹¹ And David called for Zadok and Abiathar the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, and Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab,
¹² And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
¹³ For because ye did it not at the first, the LORD our God made a breach upon us, for that we sought him not after the due order.
¹⁴ So the priests and the Levites sanctified themselves to bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel.
¹⁵ And the children of the Levites bare the ark of God upon their shoulders with the staves thereon, as Moses commanded according to the word of the LORD.
¹⁶ And David spake to the chief of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers with instruments of musick, psalteries and harps and cymbals, sounding, by lifting up the voice with joy.
¹⁷ So the Levites appointed Heman the son of Joel; and of his brethren, Asaph the son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari their brethren, Ethan the son of Kushaiah;
¹⁸ And with them their brethren of the second degree, Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, the porters.
¹⁹ So the singers, Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, were appointed to sound with cymbals of brass;
²⁰ And Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with psalteries on Alamoth;
²¹ And Mattithiah, and Elipheleh, and Mikneiah, and Obededom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps on the Sheminith to excel.
²² And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful.
²³ And Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark.
²⁴ And Shebaniah, and Jehoshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, did blow with the trumpets before the ark of God: and Obededom and Jehiah were doorkeepers for the ark.
²⁵ So David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of the house of Obededom with joy.
²⁶ And it came to pass, when God helped the Levites that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bullocks and seven rams.
²⁷ And David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites that bare the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the master of the song with the singers: David also had upon him an ephod of linen.
²⁸ Thus all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the LORD with shouting, and with sound of the cornet, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, making a noise with psalteries and harps.
²⁹ And it came to pass, as the ark of the covenant of the LORD came to the city of David, that Michal, the daughter of Saul looking out at a window saw king David dancing and playing: and she despised him in her heart.

Transport de l'arche à Jérusalem

¹ David se construisit des maisons dans la ville de David. Il prépara aussi un emplacement pour l'arche de Dieu et dressa une tente pour l'abriter.
² Il dit alors: «L'arche de Dieu ne doit être portée que par les Lévites, car c'est eux que l'Eternel a choisis pour porter son coffre et en faire à toujours le service.»
³ Puis David rassembla tout Israël à Jérusalem pour faire monter l'arche de l'Eternel à la place qu'il lui avait préparée.
⁴ David rassembla les descendants d'Aaron et les Lévites.
⁵ Pour les Kehathites, il y eut Uriel, le chef, et 120 de ses frères;
⁶ pour les Merarites, Asaja, le chef, et 220 de ses frères;
⁷ pour les Guershonites, Joël, le chef, et 130 de ses frères;
⁸ pour les descendants d'Elitsaphan, Shemaeja, le chef, et 200 de ses frères;
⁹ pour les descendants d'Hébron, Eliel, le chef, et 80 de ses frères;
¹⁰ pour les descendants d'Uziel, Amminadab, le chef, et 112 de ses frères.
¹¹ David appela les prêtres Tsadok et Abiathar ainsi que les Lévites Uriel, Asaja, Joël, Shemaeja, Eliel et Amminadab.
¹² Il leur dit: «Vous êtes les chefs de famille des Lévites. Consacrez-vous, avec vos frères, et faites monter l'arche de l'Eternel, du Dieu d'Israël, à l'emplacement que je lui ai préparé.
¹³ Parce que vous n'y étiez pas la première fois, l'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous a frappés. En effet, nous ne l'avions pas recherché conformément aux règles.»
¹⁴ Les prêtres et les Lévites se consacrèrent pour faire monter l'arche de l'Eternel, du Dieu d'Israël.
¹⁵ Les fils des Lévites portèrent l'arche de Dieu sur leurs épaules avec des barres, comme Moïse l'avait ordonné d'après la parole de l'Eternel.
¹⁶ Puis David dit aux chefs des Lévites de disposer leurs frères musiciens avec leurs instruments de musique, des luths, des harpes et des cymbales, qu'ils devaient faire retentir de sons éclatants en signe de réjouissance.
¹⁷ Les Lévites mirent donc en place Héman, fils de Joël; Asaph, fils de Bérékia, un de ses frères; et, parmi les Merarites, leurs frères, Ethan, fils de Kushaja;
¹⁸ puis avec eux leurs frères de second rang, les portiers Zacharie, Ben, Jaaziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Benaja, Maaséja, Matthithia, Eliphelé, Miknéja, Obed-Edom et Jeïel.
¹⁹ Les musiciens Héman, Asaph et Ethan devaient faire retentir des cymbales en bronze.
²⁰ Zacharie, Aziel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Unni, Eliab, Maaséja et Benaja avaient des luths pour les sopranos.
²¹ Quant à Matthithia, Eliphelé, Miknéja, Obed-Edom, Jeïel et Azazia, ils avaient des harpes à huit cordes pour conduire le chant.
²² Kenania, chef musicien parmi les Lévites, dirigeait la musique, car il en avait les compétences.
²³ Bérékia et Elkana étaient des portiers chargés de veiller sur l'arche.
²⁴ Les prêtres Shebania, Josaphat, Nathanaël, Amasaï, Zacharie, Benaja et Eliézer sonnaient de la trompette devant l'arche de Dieu. Obed-Edom et Jechija étaient aussi des portiers chargés de veiller sur l'arche.
²⁵ David, les anciens d'Israël et les chefs de milliers se mirent en route pour faire monter l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel depuis la maison d'Obed-Edom, et ce au milieu des réjouissances.
²⁶ Ce fut avec l'aide de Dieu que les Lévites portèrent l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel, et l'on sacrifia 7 taureaux et 7 béliers.
²⁷ David était habillé d'un manteau de fin lin, de même que tous les Lévites chargés de porter l'arche, les chantres et Kenania, le chef des musiciens. David portait aussi un éphod en lin.
²⁸ Tout Israël fit monter l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel avec des cris de joie, au son des clairons, des trompettes et des cymbales et en faisant retentir les luths et les harpes.
²⁹ Mical, la fille de Saül, regardait par la fenêtre lorsque l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel pénétra dans la ville de David et, en voyant le roi David sauter et danser, elle éprouva du mépris pour lui dans son cœur.

¹ Fecit quoque sibi domos in civitate David : et ædificavit locum arcæ Dei, tetenditque ei tabernaculum.
² Tunc dixit David : Illicitum est ut a quocumque portetur arca Dei nisi a Levitis, quos elegit Dominus ad portandum eam, et ad ministrandum sibi usque in æternum.

²⁶ Cumque adjuvisset Deus Levitas qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, immolabantur septem tauri, et septem arietes.
²⁷ Porro David erat indutus stola byssina, et universi Levitæ qui portabant arcam, cantoresque, et Chonenias princeps prophetiæ inter cantores : David autem etiam indutus erat ephod lineo.
²⁸ Universusque Israël deducebant arcam fœderis Domini in jubilo, et sonitu buccinæ, et tubis, et cymbalis, et nablis, et citharis concrepantes.
