¹ Et il arriva après cela que Nahas, roi des fils d'Ammon, mourut, et son fils devint roi à sa place.
² Et David dit : Je veux montrer de la bienveillance à Hanun, fils de Nahas, car son père en a montré envers moi. Et David envoya des députés pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Et les serviteurs de David vinrent au pays des fils d'Ammon, auprès de Hanun, pour le consoler.
³ Et les princes des fils d'Ammon dirent à Hanun : Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs ? N'est-ce pas dans le but de reconnaître, de détruire [la ville] et d'explorer le pays que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi ?
⁴ Et Hanun fit saisir les serviteurs de David, les fit raser et fit couper leurs habits à mi-hauteur, jusqu'au haut des cuisses, et les renvoya.
⁵ Et l'on vint faire rapport à David au sujet de ces hommes, et il envoya des gens à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient fort confus ; et le roi leur fit dire : Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et vous reviendrez ensuite.
⁶ Et les fils d'Ammon virent qu'ils s'étaient mis en mauvaise odeur auprès de David, et Hanun et les fils d'Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d'argent pour prendre à leur solde des chars et des cavaliers chez les Syriens de Mésopotamie et chez les Syriens de Maaca et à Tsoba.
⁷ Ils prirent à leur solde trente-deux mille chars et le roi de Maaca, avec son peuple, qui vinrent camper devant Médeba, pendant que les fils d'Ammon, [sortant] de leurs villes, se rassemblaient et marchaient au combat.
⁸ Et David l'apprit et il fit partir Joab avec toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.
⁹ Et les fils d'Ammon sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à la porte de la ville, et les rois qui étaient venus [à leur secours] étaient à part dans la campagne.
¹⁰ Et Joab vit qu'il y avait un front de bataille devant et derrière lui, et il fit un choix dans toute l'élite d'Israël et il les mit en bataille contre les Syriens ;
¹¹ et il plaça le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Absaï, et ils se rangèrent en bataille contre les fils d'Ammon.
¹² Et il dit : Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, et si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je te secourrai.
¹³ Courage ! Soyons fermes pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu ! Et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon !
¹⁴ Et Joab et le peuple qui était avec lui s'avança pour attaquer les Syriens, et ceux-ci s'enfuirent devant lui.
¹⁵ Et quand les fils d'Ammon virent que les Syriens s'étaient enfuis [devant Joab], eux aussi prirent la fuite devant son frère Absaï, et ils rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab retourna à Jérusalem.
¹⁶ Et les Syriens, voyant qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, envoyèrent des messagers et firent venir les Syriens qui étaient au-delà du fleuve ; Sophac, chef de l'armée d'Hadarézer, était à leur tête.
¹⁷ Et on l'annonça à David, et il rassembla tout Israël et passa le Jourdain et vint vers eux et se rangea en bataille contre eux. Et après que David se fut rangé en bataille contre eux, les Syriens combattirent avec lui.
¹⁸ Et les Syriens s'enfuirent devant Israël, et David tua aux Syriens les chevaux de sept mille chars et quarante mille fantassins, et il tua Sophac, le chef de leur armée.
¹⁹ Et les vassaux de Hadarézer, se voyant battus par Israël, firent la paix avec David et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus venir en aide aux fils d'Ammon.

¹ Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.
² And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.
³ But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?
⁴ Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.
⁵ Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
⁶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.
⁷ So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.
⁸ And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
⁹ And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.
¹⁰ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.
¹¹ And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.
¹² And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.
¹³ Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
¹⁴ So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.
¹⁵ And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.
¹⁶ And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
¹⁷ And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.
¹⁸ But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.
¹⁹ And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
