¹ Et il arriva qu'un jour Jonathan, fils de Saül, dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes : Viens, et passons jusqu'au poste des Philistins qui est là, de l'autre côté ; mais il n'en avertit pas son père.
² Et Saül se tenait à l'extrémité de Guibha, sous un grenadier qui était à Migron ; et le peuple qui était avec lui était d'environ six cents hommes.
³ Et Akhija, fils d'Akhitub, frère d'I-Cabod, fils de Phinées, fils d'Éli, sacrificateur de l'Éternel à Silo, portait l'éphod. Et le peuple ne savait pas que Jonathan s'en fût allé.
⁴ Et entre les passages par lesquels Jonathan cherchait à passer vers le poste des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d'un côté, et une dent de rocher de l'autre côté : et le nom de l'une était Botsets, et le nom de l'autre Séné ;
⁵ l'une des dents se dressait à pic du côté du nord, vis-à-vis de Micmash, et l'autre, du côté du midi, vis-à-vis de Guéba.
⁶ Et Jonathan dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes : Viens, et passons jusqu'au poste de ces incirconcis ; peut-être que l'Éternel opérera pour nous, car rien n'empêche l'Éternel de sauver, avec beaucoup ou avec peu [de gens].
⁷ Et celui qui portait ses armes lui dit : Fais tout ce qui est dans ton cœur ; va où tu voudras*, voici, je suis avec toi selon ton cœur.
⁸ Et Jonathan dit : Voici, nous allons passer vers ces hommes et nous nous montrerons à eux.
⁹ S'ils nous disent ainsi : Tenez-vous là jusqu'à ce que nous vous joignions, alors nous nous tiendrons à notre place, et nous ne monterons pas vers eux ;
¹⁰ et s'ils disent ainsi : Montez vers nous, alors nous monterons, car l'Éternel les aura livrés en notre main ; et ce sera pour nous le signe.
¹¹ Et ils se montrèrent les deux au poste des Philistins ; et les Philistins dirent : Voici les Hébreux qui sortent des trous où ils se sont cachés.
¹² Et les hommes du poste répondirent à Jonathan et à celui qui portait ses armes, et dirent : Montez vers nous, et nous vous ferons savoir quelque chose. Et Jonathan dit à celui qui portait ses armes : Monte après moi, car l'Éternel les a livrés en la main d'Israël.
¹³ Et Jonathan monta avec ses mains et ses pieds, et celui qui portait ses armes après lui. Et ils tombèrent devant Jonathan, et celui qui portait ses armes les tuait après lui.
¹⁴ Et ce premier coup que frappèrent Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes, mit [par terre]* une vingtaine d'hommes, sur la moitié environ du sillon d'un arpent de terre.
¹⁵ Et l'épouvante* fut dans le camp, dans la campagne et parmi tout le peuple ; le poste et les ravageurs, eux aussi, furent saisis d'épouvante* ; et le pays trembla, et ce fut une frayeur de Dieu.
¹⁶ Et les sentinelles de Saül, qui étaient à Guibha de Benjamin, regardèrent, et voici, la multitude s'écoulait, et s'en allait, et ils s'entre-tuaient*.
¹⁷ Et Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui : Faites donc l'appel, et voyez qui s'en est allé d'avec nous. Et ils firent l'appel ; et voici, Jonathan n'y était pas, ni celui qui portait ses armes.
¹⁸ Et Saül dit à Akhija : Fais approcher l'arche* de Dieu (car l'arche de Dieu était en ce jour-là avec les fils d'Israël).
¹⁹ Et il arriva que, pendant que Saül parlait au sacrificateur, le tumulte qui était dans le camp des Philistins allait toujours croissant ; et Saül dit au sacrificateur : Retire ta main.
²⁰ Et Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui furent assemblée à grands cris, et vinrent à la bataille ; et voici, l'épée de chacun était contre l'autre : ce fut une confusion terrible.
²¹ Et il y avait, comme auparavant, des Hébreux parmi les Philistins*, lesquels étaient montés avec eux dans le camp, [de tout] alentour, et eux aussi [se tournèrent] pour être avec Israël qui était avec Saül et Jonathan.
²² Et tous les hommes d'Israël qui s'étaient cachés dans la montagne d'Éphraïm, entendirent que les Philistins fuyaient, et ils s'attachèrent, eux aussi, à leur poursuite dans la bataille.
²³ Et l'Éternel sauva Israël ce jour-là. Et la bataille s'étendit au delà de Beth-Aven.
²⁴ Et les hommes d'Israël furent accablés ce jour-là. Or Saül avait adjuré le peuple, disant : Maudit soit l'homme qui mangera du pain, jusqu'au soir, et [jusqu'à ce] que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis ; et, entre tout le peuple, nul ne goûta de pain.
²⁵ Et tout le [peuple du] pays vint dans une forêt ; et il y avait du miel sur le dessus des champs.
²⁶ Et le peuple entra dans la forêt ; et voici du miel qui coulait ; mais nul ne porta sa main à sa bouche, car le peuple avait peur du serment.
²⁷ Et Jonathan n'avait pas entendu, lorsque son père avait fait jurer le peuple, et il étendit le bout du bâton qu'il avait à la main et le trempa dans un rayon de miel et ramena sa main à sa bouche, et ses yeux furent éclaircis.
²⁸ Et quelqu'un du peuple répondit et dit : Ton père a fait expressément jurer le peuple, en disant : Maudit soit l'homme qui mangera du pain aujourd'hui ! et le peuple était fatigué.
²⁹ Et Jonathan dit : Mon père a troublé le pays. Voyez donc comme mes yeux ont été éclaircis parce que j'ai goûté un peu de ce miel !
³⁰ Qu'eût-ce été, si le peuple avait aujourd'hui mangé du butin de ses ennemis qu'il a trouvé ? maintenant la défaite des Philistins n'aurait-elle pas été plus grande ?
³¹ Et ils frappèrent ce jour-là les Philistins, depuis Micmash jusqu'à Ajalon ; et le peuple fut très fatigué.
³² Et le peuple se jeta sur le butin, et ils prirent du menu et du gros bétail, et des veaux, et ils les égorgèrent sur le sol ; et le peuple les mangeait avec le sang.
³³ Et on le rapporta à Saül, en disant : Voici, le peuple pèche contre l'Éternel en mangeant avec le sang. Et il dit : Vous avez agi infidèlement. Roulez à présent vers moi une grande pierre.
³⁴ Et Saül dit : Dispersez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites-leur : Amenez-moi chacun son bœuf et chacun son mouton*, et égorgez-les ici et mangez ; et ne péchez pas contre l'Éternel en mangeant avec le sang. Et cette nuit-là, tout le peuple amena chacun son bœuf à la main, et ils les égorgèrent là.
³⁵ Et Saül bâtit un autel à l'Éternel ; ce fut le premier autel qu'il bâtit à l'Éternel.
³⁶ Et Saül dit : Descendons de nuit après les Philistins, et pillons-les jusqu'à la lumière du matin, et n'en laissons pas un homme de reste. Et ils dirent : Fais tout ce qui est bon à tes yeux. Et le sacrificateur dit : Approchons-nous ici de Dieu.
³⁷ Et Saül interrogea Dieu : Descendrai-je après les Philistins ? Les livreras-tu en la main d'Israël ? Et il ne lui répondit pas ce jour-là.
³⁸ Et Saül dit : Approchez ici, vous tous les principaux* du peuple, et sachez et voyez comment ce péché est arrivé aujourd'hui ;
³⁹ car l'Éternel qui a sauvé Israël est vivant, que si c'était par Jonathan, mon fils, il mourra certainement ! Et personne de tout le peuple ne lui répondit.
⁴⁰ Et il dit à tout Israël : Vous, soyez d'un côté, et moi et Jonathan, mon fils, nous serons de l'autre côté. Et le peuple dit à Saül : Fais ce qui est bon à tes yeux.
⁴¹ Et Saül dit à l'Éternel, le Dieu d'Israël : Donne [un sort*] parfait. Et Jonathan et Saül furent pris, et le peuple échappa.
⁴² Et Saül dit : Jetez le sort entre moi et Jonathan, mon fils. Et Jonathan fut pris.
⁴³ Et Saül dit à Jonathan : Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. Et Jonathan le lui déclara, et dit : Je n'ai fait que goûter un peu de miel avec le bout du bâton que j'avais à la main, [et] voici, je meurs !
⁴⁴ Et Saül dit : Que Dieu [me] fasse ainsi, et ainsi y ajoute, si tu ne meurs certainement, Jonathan !
⁴⁵ Et le peuple dit à Saül : Jonathan, qui a opéré cette grande délivrance en Israël, mourra-t-il ? Qu'ainsi n'advienne ! L'Éternel est vivant, s'il tombe à terre un des cheveux de sa tête ! car il a opéré avec Dieu aujourd'hui. Et le peuple délivra Jonathan, et il ne mourut pas.
⁴⁶ Et Saül remonta de la poursuite des Philistins, et les Philistins s'en allèrent en leur lieu.
⁴⁷ Et Saül prit la royauté sur Israël, et il fit la guerre tout à l'entour contre tous ses ennemis : contre Moab, et contre les fils d'Ammon, et contre Édom, et contre les rois de Tsoba, et contre les Philistins ; et partout où il se tournait, il les châtiait.
⁴⁸ Et il forma une armée* et frappa Amalek, et délivra Israël de la main de ceux qui le pillaient.
⁴⁹ Et les fils de Saül étaient Jonathan, et Jishvi, et Malki-Shua ; et les noms de ses deux filles : le nom de l'aînée était Mérab, et le nom de la plus jeune, Mical.
⁵⁰ Et le nom de la femme de Saül était Akhinoam, fille d'Akhimaats ; et le nom du chef de son armée était Abner*, fils de Ner, oncle de Saül.
⁵¹ Et Kis, père de Saül, et Ner, père d'Abner, étaient fils d'Abiel.
⁵² Et la guerre fut forte contre les Philistins durant tous les jours de Saül ; et quand Saül voyait quelque homme fort et quelque homme vaillant, il le prenait auprès de lui.

¹ Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
² And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;
³ And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.
⁴ And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
⁵ The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.
⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.
⁷ And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.
⁸ Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
⁹ If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.
¹⁰ But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.
¹¹ And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.
¹² And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.
¹³ And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.
¹⁴ And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.
¹⁵ And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.
¹⁶ And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.
¹⁷ Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.
¹⁸ And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.
¹⁹ And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
²⁰ And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.
²¹ Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.
²² Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.
²³ So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.
²⁴ And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.
²⁵ And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.
²⁶ And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.
²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.
²⁸ Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.
²⁹ Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.
³⁰ How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?
³¹ And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.
³² And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.
³³ Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.
³⁴ And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.
³⁵ And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.
³⁶ And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.
³⁷ And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.
³⁸ And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.
³⁹ For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.
⁴⁰ Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.
⁴¹ Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.
⁴² And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.
⁴³ Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.
⁴⁴ And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.
⁴⁵ And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.
⁴⁶ Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.
⁴⁷ So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, and fought against all his enemies on every side, against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself, he vexed them.
⁴⁸ And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.
⁴⁹ Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger Michal:
⁵⁰ And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter of Ahimaaz: and the name of the captain of his host was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle.
⁵¹ And Kish was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner was the son of Abiel.
⁵² And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.

⁷ Dixitque ei armiger suus : Fac omnia quæ placent animo tuo : perge quo cupis, et ero tecum ubicumque volueris.
⁸ Et ait Jonathas : Ecce nos transimus ad viros istos. Cumque apparuerimus eis,
⁹ si taliter locuti fuerint ad nos : Manete donec veniamus ad vos : stemus in loco nostro, nec ascendamus ad eos.
¹⁰ Si autem dixerint : Ascendite ad nos : ascendamus, quia tradidit eos Dominus in manibus nostris : hoc erit nobis signum.
¹¹ Apparuit igitur uterque stationi Philisthinorum : dixeruntque Philisthiim : En Hebræi egrediuntur de cavernis in quibus absconditi fuerant.
¹² Et locuti sunt viri de statione ad Jonathan et ad armigerum ejus, dixeruntque : Ascendite ad nos, et ostendemus vobis rem. Et ait Jonathas ad armigerum suum : Ascendamus : sequere me : tradidit enim Dominus eos in manus Israël.
¹³ Ascendit autem Jonathas manibus et pedibus reptans, et armiger ejus post eum. Itaque alii cadebant ante Jonathan, alios armiger ejus interficiebat sequens eum.
¹⁴ Et facta est plaga prima qua percussit Jonathas et armiger ejus, quasi viginti virorum in media parte jugeri quam par boum in die arare consuevit.
¹⁵ Et factum est miraculum in castris per agros : sed et omnis populus stationis eorum qui ierant ad prædandum, obstupuit, et conturbata est terra : et accidit quasi miraculum a Deo.
¹⁶ Et respexerunt speculatores Saul qui erant in Gabaa Benjamin, et ecce multitudo prostrata, et huc illucque diffugiens.
¹⁷ Et ait Saul populo qui erat cum eo : Requirite, et videte quis abierit ex nobis. Cumque requisissent, repertum est non adesse Jonathan et armigerum ejus.
¹⁸ Et ait Saul ad Achiam : Applica arcam Dei. (Erat enim ibi arca Dei in die illa cum filiis Israël.)
¹⁹ Cumque loqueretur Saul ad sacerdotem, tumultus magnus exortus est in castris Philisthinorum : crescebatque paulatim, et clarius resonabat. Et ait Saul ad sacerdotem : Contrahe manum tuam.
²⁰ Conclamavit ergo Saul, et omnis populus qui erat cum eo, et venerunt usque ad locum certaminis : et ecce versus fuerat gladius uniuscujusque ad proximum suum, et cædes magna nimis.
²¹ Sed et Hebræi qui fuerant cum Philisthiim heri et nudiustertius, ascenderantque cum eis in castris, reversi sunt ut essent cum Israël qui erant cum Saul et Jonatha.
²² Omnes quoque Israëlitæ qui se absconderant in monte Ephraim, audientes quod fugissent Philisthæi, sociaverunt se cum suis in prælio. Et erant cum Saul quasi decem millia virorum.
²³ Et salvavit Dominus in die illa Israël : pugna autem pervenit usque ad Bethaven.
²⁴ Et viri Israël sociati sunt sibi in die illa : adjuravit autem Saul populum, dicens : Maledictus vir qui comederit panem usque ad vesperam, donec ulciscar de inimicis meis. Et non manducavit universus populus panem :
²⁵ omneque terræ vulgus venit in saltum, in quo erat mel super faciem agri.
²⁶ Ingressus est itaque populus saltum, et apparuit fluens mel, nullusque applicuit manum ad os suum : timebat enim populus juramentum.
²⁷ Porro Jonathas non audierat cum adjuraret pater ejus populum : extenditque summitatem virgæ quam habebat in manu, et intinxit in favum mellis : et convertit manum suam ad os suum, et illuminati sunt oculi ejus.
²⁸ Respondensque unus de populo, ait : Jurejurando constrinxit pater tuus populum, dicens : Maledictus vir qui comederit panem hodie. (Defecerat autem populus.)
²⁹ Dixitque Jonathas : Turbavit pater meus terram : vidistis ipsi quia illuminati sunt oculi mei, eo quod gustaverim paululum de melle isto :
³⁰ quanto magis si comedisset populus de præda inimicorum suorum, quam reperit ? nonne major plaga facta fuisset in Philisthiim ?
³¹ Percusserunt ergo in die illa Philisthæos a Machmis usque in Ajalon. Defatigatus est autem populus nimis :
³² et versus ad prædam tulit oves, et boves, et vitulos, et mactaverunt in terra : comeditque populus cum sanguine.
³³ Nuntiaverunt autem Sauli dicentes quod populus peccasset Domino, comedens cum sanguine. Qui ait : Prævaricati estis : volvite ad me jam nunc saxum grande.
³⁴ Et dixit Saul : Dispergimini in vulgus, et dicite eis ut adducat ad me unusquisque bovem suum et arietem, et occidite super istud, et vescimini, et non peccabitis Domino comedentes cum sanguine. Adduxit itaque omnis populus unusquisque bovem in manu sua usque ad noctem : et occiderunt ibi.
³⁵ Ædificavit autem Saul altare Domino, tuncque primum cœpit ædificare altare Domino.
³⁶ Et dixit Saul : Irruamus super Philisthæos nocte, et vastemus eos usque dum illucescat mane, nec relinquamus ex eis virum. Dixitque populus : Omne quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis, fac. Et ait sacerdos : Accedamus huc ad Deum.
³⁷ Et consuluit Saul Dominum : Num persequar Philisthiim ? si trades eos in manus Israël ? Et non respondit ei in die illa.
³⁸ Dixitque Saul : Applicate huc universos angulos populi : et scitote, et videte per quem acciderit peccatum hoc hodie.
³⁹ Vivit Dominus salvator Israël, quia si per Jonathan filium meum factum est, absque retractione morietur. Ad quod nullus contradixit ei de omni populo.
⁴⁰ Et ait ad universum Israël : Separamini vos in partem unam, et ego cum Jonatha filio meo ero in parte altera. Responditque populus ad Saul : Quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis, fac.
⁴¹ Et dixit Saul ad Dominum Deum Israël : Domine Deus Israël, da indicium : quid est quod non responderis servo tuo hodie ? si in me, aut in Jonatha filio meo, est iniquitas hæc, da ostensionem : aut si hæc iniquitas est in populo tuo, da sanctitatem. Et deprehensus est Jonathas et Saul : populus autem exivit.
⁴² Et ait Saul : Mittite sortem inter me et inter Jonathan filium meum. Et captus est Jonathas.
⁴³ Dixit autem Saul ad Jonathan : Indica mihi quid feceris. Et indicavit ei Jonathas, et ait : Gustans gustavi in summitate virgæ quæ erat in manu mea, paululum mellis, et ecce ego morior.
⁴⁴ Et ait Saul : Hæc faciat mihi Deus, et hæc addat, quia morte morieris, Jonatha.
⁴⁵ Dixitque populus ad Saul : Ergone Jonathas morietur, qui fecit salutem hanc magnam in Israël ? hoc nefas est : vivit Dominus, si ceciderit capillus de capite ejus in terram, quia cum Deo operatus est hodie. Liberavit ergo populus Jonathan, ut non moreretur.
⁴⁶ Recessitque Saul, nec persecutus est Philisthiim : porro Philisthiim abierunt in loca sua.
⁴⁷ Et Saul, confirmato regno super Israël, pugnabat per circuitum adversum omnes inimicos ejus, contra Moab, et filios Ammon, et Edom, et reges Soba, et Philisthæos : et quocumque se verterat, superabat.
⁴⁸ Congregatoque exercitu, percussit Amalec, et eruit Israël de manu vastatorum ejus.
⁴⁹ Fuerunt autem filii Saul, Jonathas, et Jessui, et Melchisua : et nomina duarum filiarum ejus, nomen primogenitæ Merob, et nomen minoris Michol.
⁵⁰ Et nomen uxoris Saul Achinoam filia Achimaas : et nomen principis militiæ ejus Abner filius Ner, patruelis Saul.
⁵¹ Porro Cis fuit pater Saul, et Ner pater Abner, filius Abiel.
⁵² Erat autem bellum potens adversum Philisthæos omnibus diebus Saul. Nam quemcumque viderat Saul virum fortem, et aptum ad prælium, sociabat eum sibi.
