¹ Et les Philistins attaquèrent Israël, et les hommes d'Israël s'enfuirent devant les Philistins et tombèrent blessés à mort sur la montagne de Guilboa.
² Et les Philistins s'attachèrent à poursuivre Saül et ses fils ; et les Philistins frappèrent Jonathan, Abinadab et Malkisua, fils de Saül.
³ Et l'effort du combat porta sur Saül ; et les archers le découvrirent et il eut une grande peur des archers.
⁴ Et Saül dit à son écuyer : Tire ton épée et transperce-m'en, de peur que ces incirconcis ne viennent et ne me transpercent et ne m'outragent. Et son écuyer ne le voulut pas faire, car il était saisi de crainte ; et Saül prit l'épée et se jeta dessus.
⁵ Et son écuyer, voyant que Saül était mort, se jeta lui aussi sur son épée et mourut avec lui.
⁶ Et Saül et ses trois fils et son écuyer et même tous ses hommes moururent en ce jour-là ensemble.
⁷ Et les hommes d'Israël, qui demeuraient de ce côté de la Plaine et de ce côté du Jourdain, ayant vu que les hommes d'Israël s'étaient enfuis et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts, abandonnèrent les villes et prirent la fuite. Et les Philistins vinrent et s'y établirent.
⁸ Et le lendemain, les Philistins vinrent pour dépouiller les morts et ils trouvèrent Saül et ses trois fils gisant sur la montagne de Guilboa.
⁹ Et ils lui coupèrent la tête et le dépouillèrent de ses armes ; et ils envoyèrent par tout le pays des Philistins annoncer cette bonne nouvelle dans les temples de leurs idoles et parmi le peuple.
¹⁰ Et ils mirent ses armes dans le temple d'Astarté, et ils suspendirent son cadavre au mur de Beth-Séan.
¹¹ Et les habitants de Jabès de Galaad apprirent ce que les Philistins avaient fait à Saül.
¹² Et tous les hommes vaillants se levèrent et ils marchèrent toute la nuit et ils enlevèrent les cadavres de Saül et de ses fils de la muraille de Beth-Séan ; et ils revinrent à Jabès et les brûlèrent là.
¹³ Et ils prirent leurs os et les enterrèrent sous le tamarisque de Jabès ; et ils jeûnèrent sept jours.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa.
² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Melchishua, Saul's sons.
³ And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers.
⁴ Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.
⁵ And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him.
⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armourbearer, and all his men, that same day together.
⁷ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.
⁸ And it came to pass on the morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount Gilboa.
⁹ And they cut off his head, and stripped off his armour, and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, to publish it in the house of their idols, and among the people.
¹⁰ And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth: and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan.
¹¹ And when the inhabitants of Jabeshgilead heard of that which the Philistines had done to Saul;
¹² All the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Bethshan, and came to Jabesh, and burnt them there.
¹³ And they took their bones, and buried them under a tree at Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
