¹ Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:
² Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
³ According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
⁴ Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
⁵ And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
⁶ And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
⁷ And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
⁸ For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
⁹ But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
¹⁰ Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
¹¹ For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
¹² Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth.
¹³ Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance;
¹⁴ Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me.
¹⁵ Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.
¹⁶ For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
¹⁷ For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
¹⁸ And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
¹⁹ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
²⁰ Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
²¹ For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Exhortation à l'affermissement de notre vocation en Christ, par la parole des Prophètes.

¹ Siméon Pierre, serviteur et Apôtre de Jésus-Christ, à vous qui avez obtenu une foi de pareil prix avec nous, par la justice de notre Dieu et Sauveur Jésus-Christ.
² Que la grâce et la paix vous soient multipliées, en la connaissance de Dieu, et de notre Seigneur Jésus.
³ Puisque sa divine puissance nous a donné tout ce qui [appartient] à la vie et à la piété, par la connaissance de celui qui nous a appelés par sa gloire et par sa vertu.
⁴ Par lesquelles nous sont données les grandes et précieuses promesses, afin que par elles vous soyez faits participants de la nature divine, étant échappés de la corruption qui règne dans le monde par la convoitise ;
⁵ Vous donc aussi y donnant tous vos soins ajoutez la vertu à votre foi ; à la vertu, la science ;
⁶ A la science, la tempérance ; à la tempérance, la patience ; à la patience, la piété ;
⁷ A la piété, l'amour fraternel ; et à l'amour fraternel, la charité.
⁸ Car si ces choses sont en vous, et y abondent, elles ne vous laisseront point oisifs ni stériles en la connaissance de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ.
⁹ Mais celui en qui ces choses ne se trouvent point, est aveugle, et ne voit point de loin, ayant oublié la purification de ses anciens péchés.
¹⁰ C'est pourquoi, mes frères, étudiez vous plutôt à affermir votre vocation, et votre élection ; car en faisant cela vous ne broncherez jamais.
¹¹ Car par ce moyen l'entrée au Royaume éternel de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ vous sera abondamment donnée.
¹² C'est pourquoi je ne serai point paresseux à vous faire toujours souvenir de ces choses, quoique vous ayez de la connaissance, et que vous soyez fondés en la vérité présente.
¹³ Car je crois qu'il est juste que je vous réveille par des avertissements, tandis que je suis dans cette tente ;
¹⁴ Sachant que dans peu de temps je dois en déloger, comme notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ lui-même me l'a déclaré.
¹⁵ Mais j'aurai soin que vous puissiez aussi après mon départ vous remettre continuellement ces choses dans votre souvenir.
¹⁶ Car nous ne vous avons point donné à connaître la puissance et la venue de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ en suivant des fables artificieusement composées, mais comme ayant vu sa majesté de nos propres yeux.
¹⁷ Car il reçut de Dieu le Père honneur et gloire, quand une telle voix lui fut adressée de la gloire magnifique ; celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai pris mon bon plaisir.
¹⁸ Et nous entendîmes cette voix émanée du Ciel, étant avec lui sur la sainte montagne.
¹⁹ Nous avons aussi la parole des Prophètes plus ferme, à laquelle vous faites bien d'être attentifs, comme à une chandelle qui a éclairé dans un lieu obscur, jusqu'à ce que le jour ait commencé à luire, et que l'étoile du matin se soit levée dans vos coeurs.
²⁰ Considérant premièrement ceci, qu'aucune prophétie de l'Ecriture ne procède d'aucun mouvement particulier.
²¹ Car la prophétie n'a point été autrefois apportée par la volonté humaine, mais les saints hommes de Dieu étant poussés par le Saint-Esprit, ont parlé.

¹ Simon Petrus, servus et apostolus Jesu Christi, iis qui coæqualem nobiscum sortiti sunt fidem in justitia Dei nostri, et Salvatoris Jesu Christi.
² Gratia vobis, et pax adimpleatur in cognitione Dei, et Christi Jesu Domini nostri :
³ Quomodo omnia nobis divinæ virtutis suæ, quæ ad vitam et pietatem donata sunt, per cognitionem ejus, qui vocavit nos propria gloria, et virtute,
⁴ per quem maxima, et pretiosa nobis promissa donavit : ut per hæc efficiamini divinæ consortes naturæ : fugientes ejus, quæ in mundo est, concupiscentiæ corruptionem.
⁵ Vos autem curam omnem subinferentes, ministrate in fide vestra virtutem, in virtute autem scientiam,
⁶ in scientia autem abstinentiam, in abstinentia autem patientiam, in patientia autem pietatem,
⁷ in pietate autem amorem fraternitatis, in amore autem fraternitatis caritatem.
⁸ Hæc enim si vobiscum adsint, et superent, non vacuos nec sine fructu vos constituent in Domini nostri Jesu Christi cognitione.
⁹ Cui enim non præsto sunt hæc, cæcus est, et manu tentans, oblivionem accipiens purgationis veterum suorum delictorum.
¹⁰ Quapropter fratres, magis satagite ut per bona opera certam vestram vocationem, et electionem faciatis : hæc enim facientes, non peccabitis aliquando.
¹¹ Sic enim abundanter ministrabitur vobis introitus in æternum regnum Domini nostri et Salvatoris Jesu Christi.
¹² Propter quod incipiam vos semper commonere de his : et quidem scientes et confirmatos vos in præsenti veritate.
¹³ Justum autem arbitror quamdiu sum in hoc tabernaculo, suscitare vos in commonitione :
¹⁴ certus quod velox est depositio tabernaculi mei secundum quod et Dominus noster Jesus Christus significavit mihi.
¹⁵ Dabo autem operam et frequenter habere vos post obitum meum, ut horum memoriam faciatis.
¹⁶ Non enim doctas fabulas secuti notam fecimus vobis Domini nostri Jesu Christi virtutem et præsentiam : sed speculatores facti illius magnitudinis.
¹⁷ Accipiens enim a Deo Patre honorem et gloriam, voce delapsa ad eum hujuscemodi a magnifica gloria : Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi complacui, ipsum audite.
¹⁸ Et hanc vocem nos audivimus de cælo allatam, cum essemus cum ipso in monte sancto.
¹⁹ Et habemus firmiorem propheticum sermonem : cui benefacitis attendentes quasi lucernæ lucenti in caliginoso loco donec dies elucescat, et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris :
²⁰ hoc primum intelligentes quod omnis prophetia Scripturæ propria interpretatione non fit.
²¹ Non enim voluntate humana allata est aliquando prophetia : sed Spiritu Sancto inspirati, locuti sunt sancti Dei homines.
