Ac 22-28 (King James)

¹ Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.
² (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)
³ I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
⁴ And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
⁵ As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
⁶ And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
⁷ And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
⁸ And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
⁹ And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
¹⁰ And I said, What shall I do, LORD? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
¹¹ And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
¹² And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,
¹³ Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
¹⁴ And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
¹⁵ For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
¹⁶ And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
¹⁷ And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
¹⁸ And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
¹⁹ And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
²⁰ And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
²¹ And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
²² And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
²³ And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,
²⁴ The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
²⁵ And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
²⁶ When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
²⁷ Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
²⁸ And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.
²⁹ Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
³⁰ On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

Actes 23

¹ And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.
² And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.
³ Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?
⁴ And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?
⁵ Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.
⁶ But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.
⁷ And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.
⁸ For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.
⁹ And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.
¹⁰ And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.
¹¹ And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.
¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.
¹³ And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.
¹⁴ And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.
¹⁵ Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.
¹⁶ And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.
¹⁷ Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.
¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.
¹⁹ Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?
²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.
²¹ But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.
²² So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.
²³ And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;
²⁴ And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.
²⁵ And he wrote a letter after this manner:
²⁶ Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.
²⁷ This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.
²⁸ And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:
²⁹ Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.
³⁰ And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.
³¹ Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.
³² On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:
³³ Who, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.
³⁴ And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;
³⁵ I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.

Actes 24

¹ And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.
² And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,
³ We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.
⁴ Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.
⁵ For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:
⁶ Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.
⁷ But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,
⁸ Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.
⁹ And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.
¹⁰ Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:
¹¹ Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.
¹² And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:
¹³ Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.
¹⁴ But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:
¹⁵ And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.
¹⁶ And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void to offence toward God, and toward men.
¹⁷ Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.
¹⁸ Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.
¹⁹ Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.
²⁰ Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,
²¹ Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.
²² And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.
²³ And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.
²⁴ And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.
²⁵ And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.
²⁶ He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.
²⁷ But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.

Actes 25

¹ Now when Festus was come into the province, after three days he ascended from Caesarea to Jerusalem.
² Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him against Paul, and besought him,
³ And desired favour against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, laying wait in the way to kill him.
⁴ But Festus answered, that Paul should be kept at Caesarea, and that he himself would depart shortly thither.
⁵ Let them therefore, said he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accuse this man, if there be any wickedness in him.
⁶ And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Caesarea; and the next day sitting on the judgment seat commanded Paul to be brought.
⁷ And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerusalem stood round about, and laid many and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove.
⁸ While he answered for himself, Neither against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Caesar, have I offended any thing at all.
⁹ But Festus, willing to do the Jews a pleasure, answered Paul, and said, Wilt thou go up to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these things before me?
¹⁰ Then said Paul, I stand at Caesar's judgment seat, where I ought to be judged: to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knowest.
¹¹ For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refuse not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accuse me, no man may deliver me unto them. I appeal unto Caesar.
¹² Then Festus, when he had conferred with the council, answered, Hast thou appealed unto Caesar? unto Caesar shalt thou go.
¹³ And after certain days king Agrippa and Bernice came unto Caesarea to salute Festus.
¹⁴ And when they had been there many days, Festus declared Paul's cause unto the king, saying, There is a certain man left in bonds by Felix:
¹⁵ About whom, when I was at Jerusalem, the chief priests and the elders of the Jews informed me, desiring to have judgment against him.
¹⁶ To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accused have the accusers face to face, and have licence to answer for himself concerning the crime laid against him.
¹⁷ Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man to be brought forth.
¹⁸ Against whom when the accusers stood up, they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed:
¹⁹ But had certain questions against him of their own superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive.
²⁰ And because I doubted of such manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters.
²¹ But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him to Caesar.
²² Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him.
²³ And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth.
²⁴ And Festus said, King Agrippa, and all men which are here present with us, ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and also here, crying that he ought not to live any longer.
²⁵ But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him.
²⁶ Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and specially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I might have somewhat to write.
²⁷ For it seemeth to me unreasonable to send a prisoner, and not withal to signify the crimes laid against him.

Actes 26

¹ Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:
² I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:
³ Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.
⁴ My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;
⁵ Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.
⁶ And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God, unto our fathers:
⁷ Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.
⁸ Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?
⁹ I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.
¹⁰ Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.
¹¹ And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.
¹² Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,
¹³ At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.
¹⁴ And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
¹⁵ And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.
¹⁶ But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;
¹⁷ Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,
¹⁸ To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.
¹⁹ Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:
²⁰ But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.
²¹ For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.
²² Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:
²³ That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.
²⁴ And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.
²⁵ But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.
²⁶ For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.
²⁷ King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.
²⁸ Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.
²⁹ And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.
³⁰ And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:
³¹ And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.
³² Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.

Actes 27

¹ And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.
² And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, being with us.
³ And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.
⁴ And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.
⁵ And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.
⁶ And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.
⁷ And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;
⁸ And, hardly passing it, came unto a place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.
⁹ Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,
¹⁰ And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.
¹¹ Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.
¹² And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.
¹³ And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.
¹⁴ But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.
¹⁵ And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.
¹⁶ And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:
¹⁷ Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.
¹⁸ And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;
¹⁹ And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tackling of the ship.
²⁰ And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.
²¹ But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.
²² And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.
²³ For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,
²⁴ Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.
²⁵ Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.
²⁶ Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.
²⁷ But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;
²⁸ And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.
²⁹ Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.
³⁰ And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,
³¹ Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.
³² Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.
³³ And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.
³⁴ Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.
³⁵ And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.
³⁶ Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.
³⁷ And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.
³⁸ And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.
³⁹ And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.
⁴⁰ And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.
⁴¹ And falling into a place where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.
⁴² And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.
⁴³ But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:
⁴⁴ And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.

Actes 28

¹ And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
² And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
³ And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
⁴ And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
⁵ And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

³ ἐγώ μὲν εἰμι ἀνὴρ ἰουδαῖος γεγεννημένος ἐν ταρσῷ τῆς κιλικίας ἀνατεθραμμένος δὲ ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ παρὰ τοὺς πόδας γαμαλιὴλ πεπαιδευμένος κατὰ ἀκρίβειαν τοῦ πατρῴου νόμου ζηλωτὴς ὑπάρχων τοῦ θεοῦ καθὼς πάντες ὑμεῖς ἐστε σήμερον
⁴ ὃς ταύτην τὴν ὁδὸν ἐδίωξα ἄχρι θανάτου δεσμεύων καὶ παραδιδοὺς εἰς φυλακὰς ἄνδρας τε καὶ γυναῖκας
⁵ ὡς καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς μαρτυρεῖ μοι καὶ πᾶν τὸ πρεσβυτέριον παρ᾽ ὧν καὶ ἐπιστολὰς δεξάμενος πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς εἰς δαμασκὸν ἐπορευόμην ἄξων καὶ τοὺς ἐκεῖσε ὄντας δεδεμένους εἰς ἰερουσαλὴμ ἵνα τιμωρηθῶσιν
⁶ ἐγένετο δέ μοι πορευομένῳ καὶ ἐγγίζοντι τῇ δαμασκῷ περὶ μεσημβρίαν ἐξαίφνης ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ περιαστράψαι φῶς ἱκανὸν περὶ ἐμέ
⁷ ἔπεσον τε εἰς τὸ ἔδαφος καὶ ἤκουσα φωνῆς λεγούσης μοι σαοὺλ σαούλ τί με διώκεις
⁸ ἐγὼ δὲ ἀπεκρίθην τίς εἶ κύριε εἶπέν τε πρός με ἐγώ εἰμι ἰησοῦς ὁ ναζωραῖος ὃν σὺ διώκεις
⁹ οἱ δὲ σὺν ἐμοὶ ὄντες τὸ μὲν φῶς ἐθεάσαντο καὶ ἔμφοβοι ἐγένοντο τὴν δὲ φωνὴν οὐκ ἤκουσαν τοῦ λαλοῦντός μοι
¹⁰ εἶπον δέ τί ποιήσω κύριε ὁ δὲ κύριος εἶπεν πρός με ἀναστὰς πορεύου εἰς δαμασκόν κἀκεῖ σοι λαληθήσεται περὶ πάντων ὧν τέτακταί σοι ποιῆσαι
¹¹ ὡς δὲ οὐκ ἐνέβλεπον ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης τοῦ φωτὸς ἐκείνου χειραγωγούμενος ὑπὸ τῶν συνόντων μοι ἦλθον εἰς δαμασκόν
¹² ἀνανίας δέ τις ἀνὴρ εὐσεβὴς κατὰ τὸν νόμον μαρτυρούμενος ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν κατοικούντων ἰουδαίων
¹³ ἐλθὼν πρός με καὶ ἐπιστὰς εἶπέν μοι σαοὺλ ἀδελφέ ἀνάβλεψον κἀγὼ αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἀνέβλεψα εἰς αὐτόν
¹⁴ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν προεχειρίσατό σε γνῶναι τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἰδεῖν τὸν δίκαιον καὶ ἀκοῦσαι φωνὴν ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ
¹⁵ ὅτι ἔσῃ μάρτυς αὐτῷ πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους ὧν ἑώρακας καὶ ἤκουσας
¹⁶ καὶ νῦν τί μέλλεις ἀναστὰς βάπτισαι καὶ ἀπόλουσαι τὰς ἁμαρτίας σου ἐπικαλεσάμενος τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ κυρίου
¹⁷ ἐγένετο δέ μοι ὑποστρέψαντι εἰς ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ προσευχομένου μου ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ γενέσθαι με ἐν ἐκστάσει
¹⁸ καὶ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν λέγοντά μοι σπεῦσον καὶ ἔξελθε ἐν τάχει ἐξ ἰερουσαλήμ διότι οὐ παραδέξονταί σου τὴν μαρτυρίαν περὶ ἐμοῦ
¹⁹ κἀγὼ εἶπον κύριε αὐτοὶ ἐπίστανται ὅτι ἐγὼ ἤμην φυλακίζων καὶ δέρων κατὰ τὰς συναγωγὰς τοὺς πιστεύοντας ἐπὶ σέ
²⁰ καὶ ὅτε ἐξεχεῖτο τὸ αἷμα στεφάνου τοῦ μάρτυρός σου καὶ αὐτὸς ἤμην ἐφεστὼς καὶ συνευδοκῶν τῇ ἀναιρέσει αὐτοῦ, καὶ φυλάσσων τὰ ἱμάτια τῶν ἀναιρούντων αὐτόν
²¹ καὶ εἶπεν πρός με πορεύου ὅτι ἐγὼ εἰς ἔθνη μακρὰν ἐξαποστελῶ σε
²² ἤκουον δὲ αὐτοῦ ἄχρι τούτου τοῦ λόγου καὶ ἐπῆραν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτῶν λέγοντες αἶρε ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τὸν τοιοῦτον οὐ γὰρ καθῆκον αὐτὸν ζῆν
²³ κραυγαζόντων δὲ αὐτῶν καὶ ῥιπτούντων τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ κονιορτὸν βαλλόντων εἰς τὸν ἀέρα
²⁴ ἐκέλευσεν αὐτὸν ὁ χιλίαρχος ἄγεσθαι εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν εἰπὼν μάστιξιν ἀνετάζεσθαι αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιγνῷ δι᾽ ἣν αἰτίαν οὕτως ἐπεφώνουν αὐτῷ
²⁵ ὡς δὲ προέτεινεν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἱμᾶσιν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν ἑστῶτα ἑκατόνταρχον ὁ παῦλος εἰ ἄνθρωπον ῥωμαῖον καὶ ἀκατάκριτον ἔξεστιν ὑμῖν μαστίζειν
²⁶ ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος προσελθὼν ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ χιλιάρχῳ λέγων, ὅρα τί μέλλεις ποιεῖν ὁ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν
²⁷ προσελθὼν δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος εἶπεν αὐτῷ λέγε μοι εἶ σὺ ῥωμαῖος εἰ ὁ δὲ ἔφη ναί
²⁸ ἀπεκρίθη τε ὁ χιλίαρχος ἐγὼ πολλοῦ κεφαλαίου τὴν πολιτείαν ταύτην ἐκτησάμην ὁ δὲ παῦλος ἔφη ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ γεγέννημαι
²⁹ εὐθέως οὖν ἀπέστησαν ἀπ᾽ αὐτοῦ οἱ μέλλοντες αὐτὸν ἀνετάζειν καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος δὲ ἐφοβήθη ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν καὶ ὅτι ἦν αὐτὸν δεδεκώς
³⁰ τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον βουλόμενος γνῶναι τὸ ἀσφαλὲς τὸ τί κατηγορεῖται παρὰ τῶν ἰουδαίων ἔλυσεν αὐτόν ἀπὸ τῶν δεσμῶν, καὶ ἐκέλευσεν ἐλθεῖν τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν, καὶ καταγαγὼν τὸν παῦλον ἔστησεν εἰς αὐτούς

¹ ἀτενίσας δὲ ὁ παῦλος τῷ συνεδρίῳ εἶπεν ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί ἐγὼ πάσῃ συνειδήσει ἀγαθῇ πεπολίτευμαι τῷ θεῷ ἄχρι ταύτης τῆς ἡμέρας
² ὁ δὲ ἀρχιερεὺς ἁνανίας ἐπέταξεν τοῖς παρεστῶσιν αὐτῷ τύπτειν αὐτοῦ τὸ στόμα
³ τότε ὁ παῦλος πρὸς αὐτὸν εἶπεν τύπτειν σε μέλλει ὁ θεός τοῖχε κεκονιαμένε καὶ σὺ κάθῃ κρίνων με κατὰ τὸν νόμον καὶ παρανομῶν κελεύεις με τύπτεσθαι
⁴ οἱ δὲ παρεστῶτες εἶπον, τὸν ἀρχιερέα τοῦ θεοῦ λοιδορεῖς
⁵ ἔφη τε ὁ παῦλος οὐκ ᾔδειν ἀδελφοί ὅτι ἐστὶν ἀρχιερεύς γέγραπται γὰρ ἄρχοντα τοῦ λαοῦ σου οὐκ ἐρεῖς κακῶς
⁶ γνοὺς δὲ ὁ παῦλος ὅτι τὸ ἓν μέρος ἐστὶν σαδδουκαίων τὸ δὲ ἕτερον φαρισαίων ἔκραξεν ἐν τῷ συνεδρίῳ ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί ἐγὼ φαρισαῖός εἰμι υἱὸς φαρισαίου περὶ ἐλπίδος καὶ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν ἐγὼ κρίνομαι
⁷ τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῦ λαλήσαντος, ἐγένετο στάσις τῶν φαρισαίων καὶ τῶν σαδδουκαίων καὶ ἐσχίσθη τὸ πλῆθος
⁸ σαδδουκαῖοι μὲν γὰρ λέγουσιν μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν μηδὲ ἄγγελον μήτε πνεῦμα φαρισαῖοι δὲ ὁμολογοῦσιν τὰ ἀμφότερα
⁹ ἐγένετο δὲ κραυγὴ μεγάλη καὶ ἀναστάντες οἱ γραμματεῖς τοῦ μέρους τῶν φαρισαίων διεμάχοντο λέγοντες οὐδὲν κακὸν εὑρίσκομεν ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ εἰ δὲ πνεῦμα ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ ἢ ἄγγελος μὴ θεομαχωμεν
¹⁰ πολλῆς δὲ γενομένης στάσεως εὐλαβηθεὶς ὁ χιλίαρχος μὴ διασπασθῇ ὁ παῦλος ὑπ᾽ αὐτῶν ἐκέλευσεν τὸ στράτευμα καταβὰν ἁρπάσαι αὐτὸν ἐκ μέσου αὐτῶν ἄγειν τε εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν
¹¹ τῇ δὲ ἐπιούσῃ νυκτὶ ἐπιστὰς αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος εἶπεν θάρσει παῦλε ὡς γὰρ διεμαρτύρω τὰ περὶ ἐμοῦ εἰς ἰερουσαλὴμ οὕτως σε δεῖ καὶ εἰς ῥώμην μαρτυρῆσαι
¹² γενομένης δὲ ἡμέρας ποιήσαντες τινες τῶν ἰουδαίων συστροφὴν ἀνεθεμάτισαν ἑαυτοὺς λέγοντες μήτε φαγεῖν μήτε πίειν ἕως οὗ ἀποκτείνωσιν τὸν παῦλον
¹³ ἦσαν δὲ πλείους τεσσαράκοντα οἱ ταύτην τὴν συνωμοσίαν πεποιηκότες,
¹⁴ οἵτινες προσελθόντες τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς πρεσβυτέροις εἶπον, ἀναθέματι ἀνεθεματίσαμεν ἑαυτοὺς μηδενὸς γεύσασθαι ἕως οὗ ἀποκτείνωμεν τὸν παῦλον
¹⁵ νῦν οὖν ὑμεῖς ἐμφανίσατε τῷ χιλιάρχῳ σὺν τῷ συνεδρίῳ ὅπως αὔριον αὐτὸν καταγάγῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ὡς μέλλοντας διαγινώσκειν ἀκριβέστερον τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ ἡμεῖς δὲ πρὸ τοῦ ἐγγίσαι αὐτὸν ἕτοιμοί ἐσμεν τοῦ ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν
¹⁶ ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀδελφῆς παύλου τό ἔνεδρον παραγενόμενος καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν ἀπήγγειλεν τῷ παύλῳ
¹⁷ προσκαλεσάμενος δὲ ὁ παῦλος ἕνα τῶν ἑκατονταρχῶν ἔφη τὸν νεανίαν τοῦτον ἀπάγαγε πρὸς τὸν χιλίαρχον ἔχει γὰρ τι ἀπαγγεῖλαί αὐτῷ
¹⁸ ὁ μὲν οὖν παραλαβὼν αὐτὸν ἤγαγεν πρὸς τὸν χιλίαρχον καὶ φησίν ὁ δέσμιος παῦλος προσκαλεσάμενός με ἠρώτησεν τοῦτον τὸν νεανίαν ἀγαγεῖν πρὸς σέ ἔχοντά τι λαλῆσαί σοι
¹⁹ ἐπιλαβόμενος δὲ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ χιλίαρχος καὶ ἀναχωρήσας κατ᾽ ἰδίαν ἐπυνθάνετο τί ἐστιν ὃ ἔχεις ἀπαγγεῖλαί μοι
²⁰ εἶπεν δὲ ὅτι οἱ ἰουδαῖοι συνέθεντο τοῦ ἐρωτῆσαί σε ὅπως αὔριον εἰς τὸ συνέδριον καταγάγῃς τὸν παῦλον ὡς μέλλοντές τι ἀκριβέστερον πυνθάνεσθαι περὶ αὐτοῦ
²¹ σὺ οὖν μὴ πεισθῇς αὐτοῖς ἐνεδρεύουσιν γὰρ αὐτὸν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἄνδρες πλείους τεσσαράκοντα οἵτινες ἀνεθεμάτισαν ἑαυτοὺς μήτε φαγεῖν μήτε πιεῖν ἕως οὗ ἀνέλωσιν αὐτόν καὶ νῦν ἕτοιμοι εἰσιν προσδεχόμενοι τὴν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἐπαγγελίαν
²² ὁ μὲν οὖν χιλίαρχος ἀπέλυσεν τὸν νεανίαν, παραγγείλας μηδενὶ ἐκλαλῆσαι ὅτι ταῦτα ἐνεφάνισας πρός με
²³ καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος δύο τινὰς τῶν ἑκατονταρχῶν εἶπεν ἑτοιμάσατε στρατιώτας διακοσίους ὅπως πορευθῶσιν ἕως καισαρείας καὶ ἱππεῖς ἑβδομήκοντα καὶ δεξιολάβους διακοσίους ἀπὸ τρίτης ὥρας τῆς νυκτός
²⁴ κτήνη τε παραστῆσαι ἵνα ἐπιβιβάσαντες τὸν παῦλον διασώσωσιν πρὸς φήλικα τὸν ἡγεμόνα
²⁵ γράψας ἐπιστολὴν περιέχουσαν τὸν τύπον τοῦτον
²⁶ κλαύδιος λυσίας τῷ κρατίστῳ ἡγεμόνι φήλικι χαίρειν
²⁷ τὸν ἄνδρα τοῦτον συλληφθέντα ὑπὸ τῶν ἰουδαίων καὶ μέλλοντα ἀναιρεῖσθαι ὑπ᾽ αὐτῶν ἐπιστὰς σὺν τῷ στρατεύματι ἐξειλόμην αὐτὸν, μαθὼν ὅτι ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν
²⁸ βουλόμενός δὲ γνῶναι τὴν αἰτίαν δι᾽ ἣν ἐνεκάλουν αὐτῷ κατήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν
²⁹ ὃν εὗρον ἐγκαλούμενον περὶ ζητημάτων τοῦ νόμου αὐτῶν μηδὲν δὲ ἄξιον θανάτου ἢ δεσμῶν ἔγκλημα ἔχοντα
³⁰ μηνυθείσης δέ μοι ἐπιβουλῆς εἰς τὸν ἄνδρα μελλείν ἔσεσθαι ὑπὸ τῶν ἰουδαίων, ἐξαυτῆς ἔπεμψα πρὸς σέ παραγγείλας καὶ τοῖς κατηγόροις λέγειν τὰ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐπὶ σοῦ ἔῤῥωσο
³¹ οἱ μὲν οὖν στρατιῶται κατὰ τὸ διατεταγμένον αὐτοῖς ἀναλαβόντες τὸν παῦλον ἤγαγον διὰ τὴς νυκτὸς εἰς τὴν ἀντιπατρίδα
³² τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον ἐάσαντες τοὺς ἱππεῖς πορεύεσθαι σὺν αὐτῷ ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν
³³ οἵτινες εἰσελθόντες εἰς τὴν καισάρειαν καὶ ἀναδόντες τὴν ἐπιστολὴν τῷ ἡγεμόνι παρέστησαν καὶ τὸν παῦλον αὐτῷ
³⁴ ἀναγνοὺς δὲ ὁ ἡγεμὼν, καὶ ἐπερωτήσας ἐκ ποίας ἐπαρχίας ἐστὶν καὶ πυθόμενος ὅτι ἀπὸ κιλικίας
³⁵ διακούσομαί σου ἔφη ὅταν καὶ οἱ κατήγοροί σου παραγένωνται ἐκέλευσεν τε αὐτόν ἐν τῷ πραιτωρίῳ τοῦ ἡρῴδου φυλάσσεσθαι

¹ μετὰ δὲ πέντε ἡμέρας κατέβη ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς ἁνανίας μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων καὶ ῥήτορος τερτύλλου τινός οἵτινες ἐνεφάνισαν τῷ ἡγεμόνι κατὰ τοῦ παύλου
² κληθέντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἤρξατο κατηγορεῖν ὁ τέρτυλλος λέγων, πολλῆς εἰρήνης τυγχάνοντες διὰ σοῦ καὶ κατορθωμάτων γινομένων τῷ ἔθνει τούτῳ διὰ τῆς σῆς προνοίας
³ πάντῃ τε καὶ πανταχοῦ ἀποδεχόμεθα κράτιστε φῆλιξ μετὰ πάσης εὐχαριστίας
⁴ ἵνα δὲ μὴ ἐπὶ πλεῖόν σε ἐγκόπτω παρακαλῶ ἀκοῦσαί σε ἡμῶν συντόμως τῇ σῇ ἐπιεικείᾳ
⁵ εὑρόντες γὰρ τὸν ἄνδρα τοῦτον λοιμὸν καὶ κινοῦντα στάσιν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἰουδαίοις τοῖς κατὰ τὴν οἰκουμένην πρωτοστάτην τε τῆς τῶν ναζωραίων αἱρέσεως
⁶ ὃς καὶ τὸ ἱερὸν ἐπείρασεν βεβηλῶσαι ὃν καὶ ἐκρατήσαμεν καὶ κατά τόν ἡμέτερον νόμον ἠθελήσαμεν κρίνειν
⁷ παρελθὼν δὲ λυσίας ὁ χιλιαρχος μετὰ πολλῆς βίας ἐκ τῶν χειρῶν ἡμῶν ἀπήγαγεν
⁸ κελεύσας τούς κατηγόρους αὐτοῦ ἔρχεσθαι ἐπί σέ παρ᾽ οὗ δυνήσῃ αὐτὸς ἀνακρίνας περὶ πάντων τούτων ἐπιγνῶναι ὧν ἡμεῖς κατηγοροῦμεν αὐτοῦ
⁹ συνέθεντο δὲ καὶ οἱ ἰουδαῖοι φάσκοντες ταῦτα οὕτως ἔχειν
¹⁰ ἀπεκρίθη δέ ὁ παῦλος νεύσαντος αὐτῷ τοῦ ἡγεμόνος λέγειν ἐκ πολλῶν ἐτῶν ὄντα σε κριτὴν τῷ ἔθνει τούτῳ ἐπιστάμενος εὐθύμοτερον τὰ περὶ ἐμαυτοῦ ἀπολογοῦμαι
¹¹ δυναμένου σου γνῶναι ὅτι οὐ πλείους εἰσίν μοι ἡμέραι ἤ δεκαδύο, ἀφ᾽ ἡς ἀνέβην προσκυνήσων ἐν ἰερουσαλήμ
¹² καὶ οὔτε ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ εὗρόν με πρός τινα διαλεγόμενον ἢ ἐπισύστασιν ποιοῦντα ὄχλου οὔτε ἐν ταῖς συναγωγαῖς οὔτε κατὰ τὴν πόλιν
¹³ οὔτε παραστῆσαι με δύνανταί περὶ ὧν νῦν κατηγοροῦσίν μου
¹⁴ ὁμολογῶ δὲ τοῦτό σοι ὅτι κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἣν λέγουσιν αἵρεσιν οὕτως λατρεύω τῷ πατρῴῳ θεῷ πιστεύων πάσιν τοῖς κατὰ τὸν νόμον καὶ τοῖς προφήταις γεγραμμένοις
¹⁵ ἐλπίδα ἔχων εἰς τὸν θεόν ἣν καὶ αὐτοὶ οὗτοι προσδέχονται ἀνάστασιν μέλλειν ἔσεσθαι νεκρῶν, δικαίων τε καὶ ἀδίκων
¹⁶ ἐν τούτῳ δὲ αὐτὸς ἀσκῶ ἀπρόσκοπον συνείδησιν ἔχειν πρὸς τὸν θεὸν καὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους διαπαντός
¹⁷ δι᾽ ἐτῶν δὲ πλειόνων παρεγενόμην ἐλεημοσύνας ποιήσων εἰς τὸ ἔθνος μου καὶ προσφοράς
¹⁸ ἐν οἷς εὗρόν με ἡγνισμένον ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ οὐ μετὰ ὄχλου οὐδὲ μετὰ θορύβου τινές δέ ἀπό τῆς ἀσίας ἰουδαῖοί
¹⁹ οὓς δεῖ ἐπὶ σοῦ παρεῖναι καὶ κατηγορεῖν εἴ τι ἔχοιεν πρὸς μέ
²⁰ ἢ αὐτοὶ οὗτοι εἰπάτωσαν εἴ τί εὗρον ἐν ἐμοὶ ἀδίκημα στάντος μου ἐπὶ τοῦ συνεδρίου
²¹ ἢ περὶ μιᾶς ταύτης φωνῆς ἡς ἔκραξα ἑστὼς ἐν αὐτοῖς ὅτι περὶ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν ἐγὼ κρίνομαι σήμερον ὑφ᾽ ὑμῶν
²² ἀκούσας δὲ ταῦτα ὁ φῆλιξ ἀνεβάλετο αὐτοὺς ἀκριβέστερον εἰδὼς τὰ περὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ εἴπων, ὅταν λυσίας ὁ χιλίαρχος καταβῇ διαγνώσομαι τὰ καθ᾽ ὑμᾶς
²³ διαταξάμενος τε τῷ ἑκατοντάρχῃ τηρεῖσθαι τὸν παῦλον, ἔχειν τε ἄνεσιν καὶ μηδένα κωλύειν τῶν ἰδίων αὐτοῦ ὑπηρετεῖν ἢ προσέρχεσθαι αὐτῷ
²⁴ μετὰ δὲ ἡμέρας τινὰς παραγενόμενος ὁ φῆλιξ σὺν δρουσίλλῃ τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ οὔσῃ ἰουδαίᾳ μετεπέμψατο τὸν παῦλον καὶ ἤκουσεν αὐτοῦ περὶ τῆς εἰς χριστὸν πίστεως
²⁵ διαλεγομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ περὶ δικαιοσύνης καὶ ἐγκρατείας καὶ τοῦ κρίματος τοῦ μέλλοντος ἔσεσθαι, ἔμφοβος γενόμενος ὁ φῆλιξ ἀπεκρίθη τὸ νῦν ἔχον πορεύου καιρὸν δὲ μεταλαβὼν μετακαλέσομαί σε
²⁶ ἅμα δὲ καὶ ἐλπίζων ὅτι χρήματα δοθήσεται αὐτῷ ὑπὸ τοῦ παύλου ὅπως λύσῃ αὐτὸν διὸ καὶ πυκνότερον αὐτὸν μεταπεμπόμενος ὡμίλει αὐτῷ
²⁷ διετίας δὲ πληρωθείσης ἔλαβεν διάδοχον ὁ φῆλιξ πόρκιον φῆστον θέλων τε χάριτας καταθέσθαι τοῖς ἰουδαίοις ὁ φῆλιξ κατέλιπεν τὸν παῦλον δεδεμένον

¹ φῆστος οὖν ἐπιβὰς τῇ ἐπαρχίᾳ, μετὰ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἀνέβη εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα ἀπὸ καισαρείας
² ἐνεφάνισάν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ ἀρχιερεύς καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι τῶν ἰουδαίων κατὰ τοῦ παύλου καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν
³ αἰτούμενοι χάριν κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ ὅπως μεταπέμψηται αὐτὸν εἰς ἰερουσαλήμ ἐνέδραν ποιοῦντες ἀνελεῖν αὐτὸν κατὰ τὴν ὁδόν
⁴ ὁ μὲν οὖν φῆστος ἀπεκρίθη τηρεῖσθαι τὸν παῦλον ἐν καισαρείᾳ ἑαυτὸν δὲ μέλλειν ἐν τάχει ἐκπορεύεσθαι
⁵ οἱ οὖν δυνατοὶ ἐν ὑμῖν φησίν συγκαταβάντες εἴ τί ἐστιν ἐν τῷ ἀνδρὶ τούτω κατηγορείτωσαν αὐτοῦ
⁶ διατρίψας δὲ ἐν αὐτοῖς ἡμέρας πλείους ἢ δέκα καταβὰς εἰς καισάρειαν τῇ ἐπαύριον καθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἐκέλευσεν τὸν παῦλον ἀχθῆναι
⁷ παραγενομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ περιέστησαν οἱ ἀπὸ ἱεροσολύμων καταβεβηκότες ἰουδαῖοι πολλὰ καὶ βαρέα αἰτιάματα φέροντες κατὰ τοῦ παῦλου, ἃ οὐκ ἴσχυον ἀποδεῖξαι
⁸ ἀπολογουμένου αὐτοῦ, ὅτι οὔτε εἰς τὸν νόμον τῶν ἰουδαίων οὔτε εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν οὔτε εἰς καίσαρά τι ἥμαρτον
⁹ ὁ φῆστος δὲ τοῖς ἰουδαίοις θέλων χάριν καταθέσθαι ἀποκριθεὶς τῷ παύλῳ εἶπεν θέλεις εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα ἀναβὰς ἐκεῖ περὶ τούτων κρίνεσθαι ἐπ᾽ ἐμοῦ
¹⁰ εἶπεν δὲ ὁ παῦλος ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος καίσαρός ἑστώς εἰμι οὗ με δεῖ κρίνεσθαι ἰουδαίους οὐδὲν ἠδίκησα ὡς καὶ σὺ κάλλιον ἐπιγινώσκεις
¹¹ εἰ μὲν γὰρ ἀδικῶ καὶ ἄξιον θανάτου πέπραχά τι οὐ παραιτοῦμαι τὸ ἀποθανεῖν εἰ δὲ οὐδέν ἐστιν ὧν οὗτοι κατηγοροῦσίν μου οὐδείς με δύναται αὐτοῖς χαρίσασθαι καίσαρα ἐπικαλοῦμαι
¹² τότε ὁ φῆστος συλλαλήσας μετὰ τοῦ συμβουλίου ἀπεκρίθη καίσαρα ἐπικέκλησαι ἐπὶ καίσαρα πορεύσῃ
¹³ ἡμερῶν δὲ διαγενομένων τινῶν ἀγρίππας ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ βερνίκη κατήντησαν εἰς καισάρειαν ἀσπασόμενοι τὸν φῆστον
¹⁴ ὡς δὲ πλείους ἡμέρας διέτριβον ἐκεῖ ὁ φῆστος τῷ βασιλεῖ ἀνέθετο τὰ κατὰ τὸν παῦλον λέγων, ἀνήρ τίς ἐστιν καταλελειμμένος ὑπὸ φήλικος δέσμιος
¹⁵ περὶ οὗ γενομένου μου εἰς ἱεροσόλυμα ἐνεφάνισαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι τῶν ἰουδαίων αἰτούμενοι κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ δίκην
¹⁶ πρὸς οὓς ἀπεκρίθην ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν ἔθος ῥωμαίοις χαρίζεσθαί τινα ἄνθρωπον εἰς ἀπώλειαν, πρὶν ἢ ὁ κατηγορούμενος κατὰ πρόσωπον ἔχοι τοὺς κατηγόρους τόπον τε ἀπολογίας λάβοι περὶ τοῦ ἐγκλήματος
¹⁷ συνελθόντων οὖν αὐτῶν ἐνθάδε ἀναβολὴν μηδεμίαν ποιησάμενος τῇ ἑξῆς καθίσας ἐπὶ τοῦ βήματος ἐκέλευσα ἀχθῆναι τὸν ἄνδρα
¹⁸ περὶ οὗ σταθέντες οἱ κατήγοροι οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν ἐπέφερον ὧν ὑπενόουν ἐγὼ
¹⁹ ζητήματα δέ τινα περὶ τῆς ἰδίας δεισιδαιμονίας εἶχον πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ περί τινος ἰησοῦ τεθνηκότος ὃν ἔφασκεν ὁ παῦλος ζῆν
²⁰ ἀπορούμενος δὲ ἐγὼ εἰς τὴν περὶ τούτου ζήτησιν ἔλεγον εἰ βούλοιτο πορεύεσθαι εἰς ἰερουσαλήμ κἀκεῖ κρίνεσθαι περὶ τούτων
²¹ τοῦ δὲ παύλου ἐπικαλεσαμένου τηρηθῆναι αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν τοῦ σεβαστοῦ διάγνωσιν ἐκέλευσα τηρεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ἕως οὗ πέμψω αὐτὸν πρὸς καίσαρα
²² ἀγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν φῆστον ἔφη, ἐβουλόμην καὶ αὐτὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀκοῦσαι ὁ δὲ αὔριον φησίν ἀκούσῃ αὐτοῦ
²³ τῇ οὖν ἐπαύριον ἐλθόντος τοῦ ἀγρίππα καὶ τῆς βερνίκης μετὰ πολλῆς φαντασίας καὶ εἰσελθόντων εἰς τὸ ἀκροατήριον σύν τε τοῖς χιλιάρχοις καὶ ἀνδράσιν τοῖς κατ᾽ ἐξοχὴν οὖσιν τῆς πόλεως καὶ κελεύσαντος τοῦ φήστου ἤχθη ὁ παῦλος
²⁴ καί φησιν ὁ φῆστος ἀγρίππα βασιλεῦ καὶ πάντες οἱ συμπαρόντες ἡμῖν ἄνδρες θεωρεῖτε τοῦτον περὶ οὗ πᾶν τὸ πλῆθος τῶν ἰουδαίων ἐνέτυχόν μοι ἔν τε ἱεροσολύμοις καὶ ἐνθάδε ἐπιβοῶντες μὴ δεῖν ζῆν αὐτὸν μηκέτι
²⁵ ἐγὼ δὲ καταλαβόμενος μηδὲν ἄξιον θανάτου αὐτὸν πεπραχέναι καὶ αὐτοῦ δὲ τούτου ἐπικαλεσαμένου τὸν σεβαστὸν ἔκρινα πέμπειν αὐτὸν

²⁷ ἄλογον γάρ μοι δοκεῖ πέμποντα δέσμιον μὴ καὶ τὰς κατ᾽ αὐτοῦ αἰτίας σημᾶναι

¹ ἀγρίππας δὲ πρὸς τὸν παῦλον ἔφη ἐπιτρέπεταί σοι ὑπὲρ σεαυτοῦ λέγειν τότε ὁ παῦλος ἀπελογεῖτο ἐκτείνας τὴν χεῖρα
² περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐγκαλοῦμαι ὑπὸ ἰουδαίων βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα ἥγημαι ἐμαυτὸν μακάριον μέλλων ἀπολογεῖσθαι ἐπὶ σοῦ σήμερον
³ μάλιστα γνώστην ὄντα σε πάντων τῶν κατὰ ἰουδαίους ἐθῶν τε καὶ ζητημάτων διὸ δέομαι σου, μακροθύμως ἀκοῦσαί μου
⁴ τὴν μὲν οὖν βίωσίν μου τὴν ἐκ νεότητος τὴν ἀπ᾽ ἀρχῆς γενομένην ἐν τῷ ἔθνει μου ἔν ἱεροσολύμοις ἴσασιν πάντες οἱ ἰουδαῖοι
⁵ προγινώσκοντές με ἄνωθεν ἐὰν θέλωσιν μαρτυρεῖν ὅτι κατὰ τὴν ἀκριβεστάτην αἵρεσιν τῆς ἡμετέρας θρησκείας ἔζησα φαρισαῖος
⁶ καὶ νῦν ἐπ᾽ ἐλπίδι τῆς πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ἐπαγγελίας γενομένης ὑπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ ἕστηκα κρινόμενος
⁷ εἰς ἣν τὸ δωδεκάφυλον ἡμῶν ἐν ἐκτενείᾳ νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν λατρεῦον ἐλπίζει καταντῆσαι περὶ ἡς ἐλπίδος ἐγκαλοῦμαι βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα ὑπὸ τῶν ἰουδαίων
⁸ τί ἄπιστον κρίνεται παρ᾽ ὑμῖν εἰ ὁ θεὸς νεκροὺς ἐγείρει
⁹ ἐγὼ μὲν οὖν ἔδοξα ἐμαυτῷ πρὸς τὸ ὄνομα ἰησοῦ τοῦ ναζωραίου δεῖν πολλὰ ἐναντία πρᾶξαι
¹⁰ ὃ καὶ ἐποίησα ἐν ἱεροσολύμοις καὶ πολλούς τῶν ἁγίων ἐγὼ φυλακαῖς κατέκλεισα τὴν παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων ἐξουσίαν λαβών ἀναιρουμένων τε αὐτῶν κατήνεγκα ψῆφον
¹¹ καὶ κατὰ πάσας τὰς συναγωγὰς πολλάκις τιμωρῶν αὐτοὺς ἠνάγκαζον βλασφημεῖν περισσῶς τε ἐμμαινόμενος αὐτοῖς ἐδίωκον ἕως καὶ εἰς τὰς ἔξω πόλεις
¹² ἐν οἷς καὶ πορευόμενος εἰς τὴν δαμασκὸν μετ᾽ ἐξουσίας καὶ ἐπιτροπῆς τῆς παρὰ τῶν ἀρχιερέων
¹³ ἡμέρας μέσης κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν εἶδον βασιλεῦ οὐρανόθεν ὑπὲρ τὴν λαμπρότητα τοῦ ἡλίου περιλάμψαν με φῶς καὶ τοὺς σὺν ἐμοὶ πορευομένους
¹⁴ πάντων δέ καταπεσόντων ἡμῶν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἤκουσα φωνὴν λαλοῦσαν πρός με καὶ λέγουσαν τῇ ἑβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ σαοὺλ σαούλ τί με διώκεις σκληρόν σοι πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν
¹⁵ ἐγὼ δὲ εἶπον, τίς εἶ κύριε ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ἐγώ εἰμι ἰησοῦς ὃν σὺ διώκεις
¹⁶ ἀλλὰ ἀνάστηθι καὶ στῆθι ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας σου εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ὤφθην σοι προχειρίσασθαί σε ὑπηρέτην καὶ μάρτυρα ὧν τε εἶδές ὧν τε ὀφθήσομαί σοι
¹⁷ ἐξαιρούμενός σε ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ τῶν ἐθνῶν εἰς οὓς νῦν σε ἀποστέλλω
¹⁸ ἀνοῖξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι ἀπὸ σκότους εἰς φῶς καὶ τῆς ἐξουσίας τοῦ σατανᾶ ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν τοῦ λαβεῖν αὐτοὺς ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν καὶ κλῆρον ἐν τοῖς ἡγιασμένοις πίστει τῇ εἰς ἐμέ
¹⁹ ὅθεν βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα οὐκ ἐγενόμην ἀπειθὴς τῇ οὐρανίῳ ὀπτασίᾳ
²⁰ ἀλλὰ τοῖς ἐν δαμασκῷ πρῶτόν καὶ ἱεροσολύμοις εἰς πᾶσάν τε τὴν χώραν τῆς ἰουδαίας καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἀπαγγέλλων μετανοεῖν καὶ ἐπιστρέφειν ἐπὶ τὸν θεόν ἄξια τῆς μετανοίας ἔργα πράσσοντας
²¹ ἕνεκα τούτων με οἵ ἰουδαῖοι συλλαβόμενοι ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ ἐπειρῶντο διαχειρίσασθαι
²² ἐπικουρίας οὖν τυχὼν τῆς παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ἄχρι τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης ἕστηκα μαρτυρούμενος μικρῷ τε καὶ μεγάλῳ οὐδὲν ἐκτὸς λέγων ὧν τε οἱ προφῆται ἐλάλησαν μελλόντων γίνεσθαι καὶ μωσῆς,
²³ εἰ παθητὸς ὁ χριστός εἰ πρῶτος ἐξ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν φῶς μέλλει καταγγέλλειν τῷ λαῷ καὶ τοῖς ἔθνεσιν
²⁴ ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ ἀπολογουμένου ὁ φῆστος μεγάλῃ τῇ φωνῇ ἔφη μαίνῃ παῦλε τὰ πολλά σε γράμματα εἰς μανίαν περιτρέπει
²⁵ ὁ δὲ οὐ μαίνομαι φησίν κράτιστε φῆστε ἀλλ᾽ ἀληθείας καὶ σωφροσύνης ῥήματα ἀποφθέγγομαι
²⁶ ἐπίσταται γὰρ περὶ τούτων ὁ βασιλεύς πρὸς ὃν καὶ παῤῥησιαζόμενος λαλῶ λανθάνειν γὰρ αὐτὸν τι τούτων οὐ πείθομαι οὐδέν οὐ γάρ ἐστιν ἐν γωνίᾳ πεπραγμένον τοῦτο
²⁷ πιστεύεις βασιλεῦ ἀγρίππα τοῖς προφήταις οἶδα ὅτι πιστεύεις
²⁸ ὁ δὲ ἀγρίππας πρὸς τὸν παῦλον ἔφη, ἐν ὀλίγῳ με πείθεις χριστιανὸν γενέσθαι
²⁹ ὁ δὲ παῦλος εἰπεν, εὐξαίμην ἂν τῷ θεῷ καὶ ἐν ὀλίγῳ καὶ ἐν πολλῷ οὐ μόνον σὲ ἀλλὰ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀκούοντάς μου σήμερον γενέσθαι τοιούτους ὁποῖος κἀγώ εἰμι παρεκτὸς τῶν δεσμῶν τούτων
³⁰ καὶ ταῦτα εἰπόντος αὐτοῦ, ἀνέστη ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ὁ ἡγεμὼν ἥ τε βερνίκη καὶ οἱ συγκαθήμενοι αὐτοῖς
³¹ καὶ ἀναχωρήσαντες ἐλάλουν πρὸς ἀλλήλους λέγοντες ὅτι οὐδὲν θανάτου ἄξιον ἢ δεσμῶν πράσσει ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος
³² ἀγρίππας δὲ τῷ φήστῳ ἔφη ἀπολελύσθαι ἐδύνατο ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος εἰ μὴ ἐπεκέκλητο καίσαρα

¹ ὡς δὲ ἐκρίθη τοῦ ἀποπλεῖν ἡμᾶς εἰς τὴν ἰταλίαν παρεδίδουν τόν τε παῦλον καί τινας ἑτέρους δεσμώτας ἑκατοντάρχῃ ὀνόματι ἰουλίῳ σπείρης σεβαστῆς
² ἐπιβάντες δὲ πλοίῳ ἀδραμυττηνῷ μέλλοντες πλεῖν τοὺς κατὰ τὴν ἀσίαν τόπους ἀνήχθημεν ὄντος σὺν ἡμῖν ἀριστάρχου μακεδόνος θεσσαλονικέως
³ τῇ τε ἑτέρᾳ κατήχθημεν εἰς σιδῶνα φιλανθρώπως τε ὁ ἰούλιος τῷ παύλῳ χρησάμενος ἐπέτρεψεν πρὸς φίλους πορευθέντα ἐπιμελείας τυχεῖν
⁴ κἀκεῖθεν ἀναχθέντες ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν κύπρον διὰ τὸ τοὺς ἀνέμους εἶναι ἐναντίους
⁵ τό τε πέλαγος τὸ κατὰ τὴν κιλικίαν καὶ παμφυλίαν διαπλεύσαντες κατήλθομεν εἰς μύρα τῆς λυκίας
⁶ κἀκεῖ εὑρὼν ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος πλοῖον ἀλεξανδρῖνον πλέον εἰς τὴν ἰταλίαν ἐνεβίβασεν ἡμᾶς εἰς αὐτό
⁷ ἐν ἱκαναῖς δὲ ἡμέραις βραδυπλοοῦντες καὶ μόλις γενόμενοι κατὰ τὴν κνίδον μὴ προσεῶντος ἡμᾶς τοῦ ἀνέμου ὑπεπλεύσαμεν τὴν κρήτην κατὰ σαλμώνην
⁸ μόλις τε παραλεγόμενοι αὐτὴν ἤλθομεν εἰς τόπον τινὰ καλούμενον καλοὺς λιμένας ᾧ ἐγγὺς ἦν πόλις λασαία
⁹ ἱκανοῦ δὲ χρόνου διαγενομένου καὶ ὄντος ἤδη ἐπισφαλοῦς τοῦ πλοὸς διὰ τὸ καὶ τὴν νηστείαν ἤδη παρεληλυθέναι παρῄνει ὁ παῦλος
¹⁰ λέγων αὐτοῖς, ἄνδρες θεωρῶ ὅτι μετὰ ὕβρεως καὶ πολλῆς ζημίας οὐ μόνον τοῦ φόρτου καὶ τοῦ πλοίου ἀλλὰ καὶ τῶν ψυχῶν ἡμῶν μέλλειν ἔσεσθαι τὸν πλοῦν
¹¹ ὁ δὲ ἑκατόνταρχος τῷ κυβερνήτῃ καὶ τῷ ναυκλήρῳ ἐπείθετο μᾶλλον ἢ τοῖς ὑπὸ τοῦ παύλου λεγομένοις
¹² ἀνευθέτου δὲ τοῦ λιμένος ὑπάρχοντος πρὸς παραχειμασίαν οἱ πλείους ἔθεντο βουλὴν ἀναχθῆναι κἀκεῖθεν εἴπως δύναιντο καταντήσαντες εἰς φοίνικα παραχειμάσαι λιμένα τῆς κρήτης βλέποντα κατὰ λίβα καὶ κατὰ χῶρον
¹³ ὑποπνεύσαντος δὲ νότου δόξαντες τῆς προθέσεως κεκρατηκέναι ἄραντες ἆσσον παρελέγοντο τὴν κρήτην
¹⁴ μετ᾽ οὐ πολὺ δὲ ἔβαλεν κατ᾽ αὐτῆς ἄνεμος τυφωνικὸς ὁ καλούμενος εὐροκλύδων
¹⁵ συναρπασθέντος δὲ τοῦ πλοίου καὶ μὴ δυναμένου ἀντοφθαλμεῖν τῷ ἀνέμῳ ἐπιδόντες ἐφερόμεθα
¹⁶ νησίον δέ τι ὑποδραμόντες καλούμενον κλαύδην, μόλις ἰσχύσαμεν περικρατεῖς γενέσθαι τῆς σκάφης
¹⁷ ἣν ἄραντες βοηθείαις ἐχρῶντο ὑποζωννύντες τὸ πλοῖον φοβούμενοί τε μὴ εἰς τὴν σύρτιν ἐκπέσωσιν χαλάσαντες τὸ σκεῦος οὕτως ἐφέροντο
¹⁸ σφοδρῶς δὲ χειμαζομένων ἡμῶν τῇ ἑξῆς ἐκβολὴν ἐποιοῦντο
¹⁹ καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ αὐτόχειρες τὴν σκευὴν τοῦ πλοίου ἔῤῥιψαμεν
²⁰ μήτε δὲ ἡλίου μήτε ἄστρων ἐπιφαινόντων ἐπὶ πλείονας ἡμέρας χειμῶνός τε οὐκ ὀλίγου ἐπικειμένου λοιπὸν περιῃρεῖτο πᾶσα ἐλπὶς τοῦ σῴζεσθαι ἡμᾶς
²¹ πολλῆς δέ ἀσιτίας ὑπαρχούσης τότε σταθεὶς ὁ παῦλος ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν εἶπεν ἔδει μέν ὦ ἄνδρες πειθαρχήσαντάς μοι μὴ ἀνάγεσθαι ἀπὸ τῆς κρήτης κερδῆσαί τε τὴν ὕβριν ταύτην καὶ τὴν ζημίαν
²² καὶ τανῦν παραινῶ ὑμᾶς εὐθυμεῖν ἀποβολὴ γὰρ ψυχῆς οὐδεμία ἔσται ἐξ ὑμῶν πλὴν τοῦ πλοίου
²³ παρέστη γάρ μοι τῇ νυκτὶ ταύτῃ ἄγγελος τοῦ θεοῦ οὗ εἰμι ᾧ καὶ λατρεύω
²⁴ λέγων, μὴ φοβοῦ παῦλε καίσαρί σε δεῖ παραστῆναι καὶ ἰδού, κεχάρισταί σοι ὁ θεὸς πάντας τοὺς πλέοντας μετὰ σοῦ
²⁵ διὸ εὐθυμεῖτε ἄνδρες πιστεύω γὰρ τῷ θεῷ ὅτι οὕτως ἔσται καθ᾽ ὃν τρόπον λελάληταί μοι
²⁶ εἰς νῆσον δέ τινα δεῖ ἡμᾶς ἐκπεσεῖν

¹⁶ Sed exsurge, et sta super pedes tuos : ad hoc enim apparui tibi, ut constituam te ministrum, et testem eorum quæ vidisti, et eorum quibus apparebo tibi,
¹⁷ eripiens te de populo et gentibus, in quas nunc ego mitto te,
¹⁸ aperire oculos eorum, ut convertantur a tenebris ad lucem, et de potestate Satanæ ad Deum, ut accipiant remissionem peccatorum, et sortem inter sanctos, per fidem quæ est in me.
¹⁹ Unde, rex Agrippa, non fui incredulus cælesti visioni :
²⁰ sed his qui sunt Damasci primum, et Jerosolymis, et in omnem regionem Judææ, et gentibus, annuntiabam, ut pœnitentiam agerent, et converterentur ad Deum, digna pœnitentiæ opera facientes.
²¹ Hac ex causa me Judæi, cum essem in templo, comprehensum tentabant interficere.
²² Auxilio autem adjutus Dei usque in hodiernum diem, sto, testificans minori atque majori, nihil extra dicens quam ea quæ prophetæ locuti sunt futura esse, et Moyses,
²³ si passibilis Christus, si primus ex resurrectione mortuorum, lumen annuntiaturus est populo et gentibus.
²⁴ Hæc loquente eo, et rationem reddente, Festus magna voce dixit : Insanis, Paule : multæ te litteræ ad insaniam convertunt.
²⁵ Et Paulus : Non insanio, inquit, optime Feste, sed veritatis et sobrietatis verba loquor.
²⁶ Scit enim de his rex, ad quem et constanter loquor : latere enim eum nihil horum arbitror. Neque enim in angulo quidquam horum gestum est.
²⁷ Credis, rex Agrippa, prophetis ? Scio quia credis.
²⁸ Agrippa autem ad Paulum : In modico suades me christianum fieri.
²⁹ Et Paulus : Opto apud Deum, et in modico et in magno, non tantum te, sed etiam omnes qui audiunt hodie fieri tales, qualis et ego sum, exceptis vinculis his.
³⁰ Et exsurrexit rex, et præses, et Bernice, et qui assidebant eis.
³¹ Et cum secessissent, loquebantur ad invicem, dicentes : Quia nihil morte aut vinculis dignum quid fecit homo iste.
³² Agrippa autem Festo dixit : Dimitti poterat homo hic, si non appellasset Cæsarem.

¹ Ut autem judicatum est navigare eum in Italiam, et tradi Paulum cum reliquis custodiis centurioni nomine Julio cohortis Augustæ,
² ascendentes navem Adrumetinam, incipientes navigare circa Asiæ loca, sustulimus, perseverante nobiscum Aristarcho Macedone Thessalonicensi.
³ Sequenti autem die devenimus Sidonem. Humane autem tractans Julius Paulum, permisit ad amicos ire, et curam sui agere.
⁴ Et inde cum sustulissemus, subnavigavimus Cyprum, propterea quod essent venti contrarii.
⁵ Et pelagus Ciliciæ et Pamphyliæ navigantes, venimus Lystram, quæ est Lyciæ :
⁶ et ibi inveniens centurio navem Alexandrinam navigantem in Italiam, transposuit nos in eam.
⁷ Et cum multis diebus tarde navigaremus, et vix devenissemus contra Gnidum, prohibente nos vento, adnavigavimus Cretæ juxta Salmonem :
⁸ et vix juxta navigantes, venimus in locum quemdam qui vocatur Boniportus, cui juxta erat civitas Thalassa.
⁹ Multo autem tempore peracto, et cum jam non esset tuta navigatio eo quod et jejunium jam præteriisset, consolabatur eos Paulus,
¹⁰ dicens eis : Viri, video quoniam cum injuria et multo damno non solum oneris, et navis, sed etiam animarum nostrarum incipit esse navigatio.
¹¹ Centurio autem gubernatori et nauclero magis credebat, quam his quæ a Paulo dicebantur.
¹² Et cum aptus portus non esset ad hiemandum, plurimi statuerunt consilium navigare inde, si quomodo possent, devenientes Phœnicen hiemare, portum Cretæ respicientem ad Africum et ad Corum.
¹³ Aspirante autem austro, æstimantes propositum se tenere, cum sustulissent de Asson, legebant Cretam.
¹⁴ Non post multum autem misit se contra ipsam ventus typhonicus, qui vocatur Euroaquilo.
¹⁵ Cumque arrepta esset navis, et non posset conari in ventum, data nave flatibus, ferebamur.
¹⁶ In insulam autem quamdam decurrentes, quæ vocatur Cauda, potuimus vix obtinere scapham.
¹⁷ Qua sublata, adjutoriis utebantur, accingentes navem, timentes ne in Syrtim inciderent, summisso vase sic ferebantur.
¹⁸ Valida autem nobis tempestate jactatis, sequenti die jactum fecerunt :
¹⁹ et tertia die suis manibus armamenta navis projecerunt.
²⁰ Neque autem sole, neque sideribus apparentibus per plures dies, et tempestate non exigua imminente, jam ablata erat spes omnis salutis nostræ.
²¹ Et cum multa jejunatio fuisset, tunc stans Paulus in medio eorum, dixit : Oportebat quidem, o viri, audito me, non tollere a Creta, lucrique facere injuriam hanc et jacturam.
²² Et nunc suadeo vobis bono animo esse : amissio enim nullius animæ erit ex vobis, præterquam navis.
²³ Astitit enim mihi hac nocte angelus Dei, cujus sum ego, et cui deservio,
²⁴ dicens : Ne timeas, Paule : Cæsari te oportet assistere : et ecce donavit tibi Deus omnes qui navigant tecum.
²⁵ Propter quod bono animo estote, viri : credo enim Deo quia sic erit, quemadmodum dictum est mihi.
²⁶ In insulam autem quamdam oportet nos devenire.
²⁷ Sed posteaquam quartadecima nox supervenit, navigantibus nobis in Adria circa mediam noctem, suspicabantur nautæ apparere sibi aliquam regionem.
²⁸ Qui et summittentes bolidem, invenerunt passus viginti : et pusillum inde separati, invenerunt passus quindecim.
²⁹ Timentes autem ne in aspera loca incideremus, de puppi mittentes anchoras quatuor, optabant diem fieri.
³⁰ Nautis vero quærentibus fugere de navi, cum misissent scapham in mare, sub obtentu quasi inciperent a prora anchoras extendere,
³¹ dixit Paulus centurioni et militibus : Nisi hi in navi manserint, vos salvi fieri non potestis.
³² Tunc absciderunt milites funes scaphæ, et passi sunt eam excidere.
³³ Et cum lux inciperet fieri, rogabat Paulus omnes sumere cibum, dicens : Quartadecima die hodie exspectantes jejuni permanetis, nihil accipientes.
³⁴ Propter quod rogo vos accipere cibum pro salute vestra : quia nullius vestrum capillus de capite peribit.
³⁵ Et cum hæc dixisset, sumens panem, gratias egit Deo in conspectu omnium : et cum fregisset, cœpit manducare.
³⁶ Animæquiores autem facti omnes, et ipsi sumpserunt cibum.
³⁷ Eramus vero universæ animæ in navi ducentæ septuaginta sex.
³⁸ Et satiati cibo alleviabant navem, jactantes triticum in mare.
³⁹ Cum autem dies factus esset, terram non agnoscebant : sinum vero quemdam considerabant habentem littus, in quem cogitabant si possent ejicere navem.
⁴⁰ Et cum anchoras sustulissent, committebant se mari, simul laxantes juncturas gubernaculorum : et levato artemone secundum auræ flatum, tendebant ad littus.
⁴¹ Et cum incidissemus in locum dithalassum, impegerunt navem : et prora quidem fixa manebat immobilis, puppis vero solvebatur a vi maris.
⁴² Militum autem consilium fuit ut custodias occiderent, ne quis cum enatasset, effugeret.
⁴³ Centurio autem volens servare Paulum, prohibuit fieri : jussitque eos qui possent natare, emittere se primos, et evadere, et ad terram exire :
⁴⁴ et ceteros, alios in tabulis ferebant, quosdam super ea quæ de navi erant. Et sic factum est, ut omnes animæ evaderent ad terram.

Actes 28

¹ Et cum evasissemus, tunc cognovimus quia Melita insula vocabatur. Barbari vero præstabant non modicam humanitatem nobis.
² Accensa enim pyra, reficiebant nos omnes propter imbrem qui imminebat, et frigus.
³ Cum congregasset autem Paulus sarmentorum aliquantam multitudinem, et imposuisset super ignem, vipera a calore cum processisset, invasit manum ejus.
⁴ Ut vero viderunt barbari pendentem bestiam de manu ejus, ad invicem dicebant : Utique homicida est homo hic, qui cum evaserit de mari, ultio non sinit eum vivere.
⁵ Et ille quidem excutiens bestiam in ignem, nihil mali passus est.
