¹ But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,
² And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
³ But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
⁴ Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
⁵ And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.
⁶ And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.
⁷ And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.
⁸ And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.
⁹ Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.
¹⁰ Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.
¹¹ And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
¹² And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.
¹³ And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.
¹⁴ And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)
¹⁵ Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.
¹⁶ There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
¹⁷ Then the high priest rose up, and all they that were with him, (which is the sect of the Sadducees,) and were filled with indignation,
¹⁸ And laid their hands on the apostles, and put them in the common prison.
¹⁹ But the angel of the Lord by night opened the prison doors, and brought them forth, and said,
²⁰ Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
²¹ And when they heard that, they entered into the temple early in the morning, and taught. But the high priest came, and they that were with him, and called the council together, and all the senate of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
²² But when the officers came, and found them not in the prison, they returned and told,
²³ Saying, The prison truly found we shut with all safety, and the keepers standing without before the doors: but when we had opened, we found no man within.
²⁴ Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them whereunto this would grow.
²⁵ Then came one and told them, saying, Behold, the men whom ye put in prison are standing in the temple, and teaching the people.
²⁶ Then went the captain with the officers, and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should have been stoned.
²⁷ And when they had brought them, they set them before the council: and the high priest asked them,
²⁸ Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man's blood upon us.
²⁹ Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.
³⁰ The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.
³¹ Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
³² And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
³³ When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to slay them.
³⁴ Then stood there up one in the council, a Pharisee, named Gamaliel, a doctor of the law, had in reputation among all the people, and commanded to put the apostles forth a little space;
³⁵ And said unto them, Ye men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what ye intend to do as touching these men.
³⁶ For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought.
³⁷ After this man rose up Judas of Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were dispersed.
³⁸ And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:
³⁹ But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.
⁴⁰ And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
⁴¹ And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.
⁴² And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.

Actes 6

¹ And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration.
² Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables.
³ Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
⁴ But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch:
⁶ Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them.
⁷ And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
⁸ And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
⁹ Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
¹⁰ And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
¹¹ Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
¹² And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
¹³ And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:
¹⁴ For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
¹⁵ And all that sat in the council, looking stedfastly on him, saw his face as it had been the face of an angel.

Mort d'Ananias et de Saphira. Malades guéris : les Apôtres mis en prison et délivrés, prêchent et souffrent avec joie.

¹ Or un homme nommé Ananias, ayant avec Saphira sa femme, vendu une possession,
² Retint une partie du prix, du consentement de sa femme, et en apporta quelque partie, et la mit aux pieds des Apôtres.
³ Mais Pierre lui dit : Ananias comment satan s'est-il emparé de ton coeur jusques à t'inciter à mentir au Saint-Esprit, et à soustraire une partie du prix de la possession ?
⁴ Si tu l'eusses gardée, ne te demeurait-elle pas ? et étant vendue, n'était-elle pas en ta puissance ? Pourquoi as-tu formé un tel dessein dans ton coeur ? tu n'as pas menti aux hommes mais à Dieu.
⁵ Et Ananias entendant ces paroles, tomba, et rendit l'esprit ; ce qui causa une grande crainte à tous ceux qui en entendirent parler.
⁶ Et quelques jeunes hommes se levant le prirent, et l'emportèrent dehors, et l'enterrèrent.
⁷ Et il arriva environ trois heures après, que sa femme aussi, ne sachant point ce qui était arrivé, entra ;
⁸ Et Pierre prenant la parole, lui dit : dis-moi, avez-vous autant vendu le champ ? et elle dit : oui, autant.
⁹ Alors Pierre lui dit : pourquoi avez-vous fait un complot entre vous de tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur ? voilà à la porte les pieds de ceux qui ont enterré ton mari, et ils t'emporteront.
¹⁰ Et au même instant elle tomba à ses pieds, et rendit l'esprit. Et quand les jeunes hommes furent entrés, ils la trouvèrent morte, et ils l'emportèrent dehors, et l'enterrèrent auprès de son mari.
¹¹ Et cela donna une grande crainte à toute l'Eglise, et à tous ceux qui entendaient ces choses.
¹² Et beaucoup de prodiges et de miracles se faisaient parmi le peuple par les mains des Apôtres ; et ils étaient tous d'un accord au portique de Salomon.
¹³ Cependant nul des autres n'osait se joindre à eux ; mais le peuple les louait hautement.
¹⁴ Et le nombre de ceux qui croyaient au Seigneur, tant d'hommes que de femmes, se multipliait de plus en plus.
¹⁵ Et on apportait les malades dans les rues, et on les mettait sur de petits lits et sur des couchettes, afin que quand Pierre viendrait, au moins son ombre passât sur quelqu'un d'eux.
¹⁶ Le peuple aussi des villes voisines s'assemblait à Jérusalem, apportant les malades, et ceux qui étaient tourmentés des esprits immondes ; et tous étaient guéris.
¹⁷ Alors le souverain Sacrificateur se leva, lui et tous ceux qui étaient avec lui, qui étaient la secte des Sadducéens, et ils furent remplis d'envie ;
¹⁸ Et mettant les mains sur les Apôtres, ils les firent conduire dans la prison publique.
¹⁹ Mais l'Ange du Seigneur ouvrit de nuit les portes de la prison, et les ayant mis dehors, il leur dit :
²⁰ Allez, et vous présentant dans le Temple, annoncez au peuple toutes les paroles de cette vie.
²¹ Ce qu'ayant entendu, ils entrèrent dès le point du jour dans le Temple, et ils enseignaient. Mais le souverain Sacrificateur étant venu, et ceux qui étaient avec lui, ils assemblèrent le Conseil et tous les Anciens des enfants d'Israël, et ils envoyèrent à la prison pour les faire amener.
²² Mais quand les huissiers y furent venus, ils ne les trouvèrent point dans la prison ;ainsi ils s'en retournèrent, et ils rapportèrent,
²³ Disant : nous avons bien trouvé la prison fermée avec toute sûreté, et les gardes aussi qui étaient devant les portes ; mais après l'avoir ouverte, nous n'avons trouvé personne dedans.
²⁴ Et quand le [souverain] Sacrificateur, et le Capitaine du Temple, et les principaux Sacrificateurs, eurent ouï ces paroles, ils furent fort en peine sur leur sujet, ne sachant ce que cela deviendrait.
²⁵ Mais quelqu'un survint qui leur dit : voilà, les hommes que vous aviez mis en prison, sont au Temple, et se tenant là ils enseignent le peuple.
²⁶ Alors le Capitaine du Temple avec les huissiers s'en alla, et il les amena sans violence : car ils craignaient d'être lapidés par le peuple.
²⁷ Et les ayant amenés, ils les présentèrent au Conseil. Et le souverain Sacrificateur les interrogea,
²⁸ Disant : ne vous avons-nous pas défendu expressément de n'enseigner point en ce Nom ? et cependant voici, vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre doctrine, et vous voulez faire venir sur nous le sang de cet homme.
²⁹ Alors Pierre et les [autres] Apôtres répondant, dirent : il faut plutôt obéir à Dieu qu'aux hommes.
³⁰ Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous avez fait mourir, le pendant au bois.
³¹ Et Dieu l'a élevé par sa puissance pour être Prince et Sauveur, afin de donner à Israël la repentance et la rémission des péchés.
³² Et nous lui sommes témoins de ce que nous disons, et le Saint-Esprit que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui obéissent, en est aussi témoin.
³³ Mais eux ayant entendu ces choses, grinçaient les dents, et consultaient pour les faire mourir.
³⁴ Mais un Pharisien nommé Gamaliel, Docteur de la Loi, honoré de tout le peuple, se levant dans le Conseil, commanda que les Apôtres se retirassent dehors pour un peu de temps.
³⁵ Puis il leur dit : hommes Israélites, prenez garde à ce que vous devrez faire touchant ces gens.
³⁶ Car avant ce temps-ci s'éleva Theudas, se disant être quelque chose, auquel se joignit un nombre d'hommes d'environ quatre cents ; mais il a été défait, et tous ceux qui s'étaient joints à lui ont été dissipés et réduits à rien.
³⁷ Après lui parut Judas le Galiléen aux jours du dénombrement, et il attira à lui un grand peuple ; mais celui-ci aussi est péri, et tous ceux qui s'étaient joints à lui ont été dispersés.
³⁸ Maintenant donc je vous dis : ne continuez plus vos poursuites contre ces hommes, et laissez-les : car si cette entreprise ou cette oeuvre est des hommes, elle sera détruite ;
³⁹ Mais si elle est de Dieu, vous ne la pourrez détruire ; et prenez garde que même vous ne soyez trouvés faire la guerre à Dieu. Et ils furent de son avis.
⁴⁰ Puis ayant appelé les Apôtres, ils leur commandèrent, après les avoir fouettés, de ne parler point au Nom de Jésus ; après quoi ils les laissèrent aller.
⁴¹ Et [les Apôtres] se retirèrent de devant le Conseil, joyeux d'avoir été rendus dignes de souffrir des opprobres pour le Nom de Jésus.
⁴² Et ils ne cessaient tous les jours d'enseigner, et d'annoncer Jésus-Christ dans le Temple, et de maison en maison.

Actes 6

Sept Diacres pour les aumônes. Etienne accusé de blasphème.

¹ Et en ces jours-là, comme les disciples se multipliaient, il s'éleva un murmure des Grecs contre les Hébreux, sur ce que leurs veuves étaient méprisées dans le service ordinaire.
² C'est pourquoi les Douze ayant appelé la multitude des disciples, dirent : il n'est pas raisonnable que nous laissions la parole de Dieu pour servir aux tables.
³ Regardez donc, mes frères, de choisir sept hommes d'entre vous, de qui on ait bon témoignage, pleins du Saint-Esprit et de sagesse, auxquels nous commettions cette affaire.
⁴ Et pour nous, nous continuerons de vaquer à la prière, et à l'administration de la parole.
⁵ Et ce discours plut à toute l'assemblée qui était là présente ; et ils élurent Etienne, homme plein de foi et du Saint-Esprit, et Philippe, et Prochore, et Nicanor, et Timon, et Parménas, et Nicolas, prosélyte d'Antioche.
⁶ Et ils les présentèrent aux Apôtres ; qui, après avoir prié, leur imposèrent les mains.
⁷ Et la parole de Dieu croissait, et le nombre des disciples se multipliait beaucoup dans Jérusalem ; un grand nombre aussi de Sacrificateurs obéissait à la foi.
⁸ Or Etienne plein de foi et de puissance, faisait de grands miracles et de grands prodiges parmi le peuple.
⁹ Et quelques-uns de la Synagogue appelée [la Synagogue] des Libertins, et [de celle] des Cyréniens, et [de celle] des Alexandrins, et de ceux qui [étaient] de Cilicie, et d'Asie, se levèrent pour disputer contre Etienne.
¹⁰ Mais ils ne pouvaient résister à la sagesse et à l'Esprit par lequel il parlait.
¹¹ Alors ils subornèrent des hommes, qui disaient : nous lui avons ouï proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre Moïse et contre Dieu.
¹² Et ils soulevèrent le peuple, et les Anciens, et les Scribes, et se jetant sur lui, ils l'enlevèrent, et l'amenèrent dans le Conseil.
¹³ Et ils présentèrent de faux témoins, qui disaient : cet homme ne cesse de proférer des paroles blasphématoires contre ce saint Lieu et [contre] la Loi.
¹⁴ Car nous lui avons ouï dire que ce Jésus le Nazarien détruira ce Lieu-ci, et qu'il changera les ordonnances que Moïse nous a données.
¹⁵ Et comme tous ceux qui étaient assis dans le Conseil avaient les yeux arrêtés sur lui, ils virent son visage comme le visage d'un Ange.

⁴ nonne manens tibi manebat, et venundatum in tua erat potestate ? quare posuisti in corde tuo hanc rem ? non es mentitus hominibus, sed Deo.
⁵ Audiens autem Ananias hæc verba, cecidit, et expiravit. Et factus est timor magnus super omnes qui audierunt.
⁶ Surgentes autem juvenes amoverunt eum, et efferentes sepelierunt.
⁷ Factum est autem quasi horarum trium spatium, et uxor ipsius, nesciens quod factum fuerat, introivit.
⁸ Dixit autem ei Petrus : Dic mihi mulier, si tanti agrum vendidistis ? At illa dixit : Etiam tanti.
⁹ Petrus autem ad eam : Quid utique convenit vobis tentare Spiritum Domini ? Ecce pedes eorum qui sepelierunt virum tuum ad ostium, et efferent te.
¹⁰ Confestim cecidit ante pedes ejus, et expiravit. Intrantes autem juvenes invenerunt illam mortuam : et extulerunt, et sepelierunt ad virum suum.

²⁴ Ut autem audierunt hos sermones magistratus templi et principes sacerdotum, ambigebant de illis quidnam fieret.
²⁵ Adveniens autem quidam, nuntiavit eis : Quia ecce viri quos posuistis in carcerem, sunt in templo, stantes et docentes populum.
²⁶ Tunc abiit magistratus cum ministris, et adduxit illos sine vi : timebant enim populum ne lapidarentur.
²⁷ Et cum adduxissent illos, statuerunt in concilio : et interrogavit eos princeps sacerdotum,
²⁸ dicens : Præcipiendo præcepimus vobis ne doceretis in nomine isto, et ecce replestis Jerusalem doctrina vestra : et vultis inducere super nos sanguinem hominis istius.
²⁹ Respondens autem Petrus et Apostoli, dixerunt : Obedire oportet Deo magis quam hominibus.
³⁰ Deus patrum nostrorum suscitavit Jesum, quem vos interemistis, suspendentes in ligno.
³¹ Hunc principem et salvatorem Deus exaltavit dextera sua ad dandam pœnitentiam Israëli, et remissionem peccatorum :
³² et nos sumus testes horum verborum, et Spiritus Sanctus, quem dedit Deus omnibus obedientibus sibi.
³³ Hæc cum audissent, dissecabantur, et cogitabant interficere illos.

³⁶ Ante hos enim dies extitit Theodas, dicens se esse aliquem, cui consensit numerus virorum circiter quadringentorum : qui occisus est, et omnes qui credebant ei, dissipati sunt, et redacti ad nihilum.
³⁷ Post hunc extitit Judas Galilæus in diebus professionis, et avertit populum post se : et ipse periit, et omnes quotquot consenserunt ei, dispersi sunt.
³⁸ Et nunc itaque dico vobis, discedite ab hominibus istis, et sinite illos : quoniam si est ex hominibus consilium hoc aut opus, dissolvetur :
³⁹ si vero ex Deo est, non poteritis dissolvere illud, ne forte et Deo repugnare inveniamini. Consenserunt autem illi.
⁴⁰ Et convocantes Apostolos, cæsis denuntiaverunt ne omnino loquerentur in nomine Jesu, et dimiserunt eos.
⁴¹ Et illi quidem ibant gaudentes a conspectu concilii, quoniam digni habiti sunt pro nomine Jesu contumeliam pati.
⁴² Omni autem die non cessabant in templo et circa domos, docentes et evangelizantes Christum Jesum.

¹ In diebus illis, crescente numero discipulorum, factum est murmur Græcorum adversus Hebræos, eo quod despicerentur in ministerio quotidiano viduæ eorum.
² Convocantes autem duodecim multitudinem discipulorum, dixerunt : Non est æquum nos derelinquere verbum Dei, et ministrare mensis.
³ Considerate ergo, fratres, viros ex vobis boni testimonii septem, plenos Spiritu Sancto et sapientia, quos constituamus super hoc opus.
⁴ Nos vero orationi et ministerio verbi instantes erimus.
⁵ Et placuit sermo coram omni multitudine. Et elegerunt Stephanum, virum plenum fide et Spiritu Sancto, et Philippum, et Prochorum, et Nicanorem, et Timonem, et Parmenam, et Nicolaum advenam Antiochenum.
⁶ Hos statuerunt ante conspectum Apostolorum : et orantes imposuerunt eis manus.
⁷ Et verbum Domini crescebat, et multiplicabatur numerus discipulorum in Jerusalem valde : multa etiam turba sacerdotum obediebat fidei.
⁸ Stephanus autem plenus gratia et fortitudine, faciebat prodigia et signa magna in populo.
⁹ Surrexerunt autem quidam de synagoga quæ appellatur Libertinorum, et Cyrenensium, et Alexandrinorum, et eorum qui erant a Cilicia, et Asia, disputantes cum Stephano :
¹⁰ et non poterant resistere sapientiæ, et Spiritui qui loquebatur.
¹¹ Tunc summiserunt viros, qui dicerent se audivisse eum dicentem verba blasphemiæ in Moysen et in Deum.
¹² Commoverunt itaque plebem, et seniores, et scribas : et concurrentes rapuerunt eum, et adduxerunt in concilium,
¹³ et statuerunt falsos testes, qui dicerent : Homo iste non cessat loqui verba adversus locum sanctum, et legem :
¹⁴ audivimus enim eum dicentem quoniam Jesus Nazarenus hic destruet locum istum, et mutabit traditiones quas tradidit nobis Moyses.
¹⁵ Et intuentes eum omnes qui sedebant in concilio, viderunt faciem ejus tamquam faciem angeli.
