¹ In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,
² Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,
³ Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?
⁴ Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:
⁵ According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
⁶ For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
⁷ And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.
⁸ The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.
⁹ The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.
¹⁰ In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,
¹¹ Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,
¹² If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.
¹³ Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.
¹⁴ Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.
¹⁵ And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:
¹⁶ Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.
¹⁷ I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.
¹⁸ Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider it.
¹⁹ Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.
²⁰ And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,
²¹ Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;
²² And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.
²³ In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the LORD of hosts.

Exhortation à achever le Temple. Prédiction de la gloire de cette seconde Maison. Promesse à Zorobabel.

¹ Le vingt et unième jour du septième mois, la parole de l'Eternel fut [adressée] par le moyen d'Aggée le Prophète, en disant :
² Parle maintenant à Zorobabel, fils de Salathiel, Gouverneur de Juda, et à Jéhosuah, fils de Jéhotsadak, grand Sacrificateur, et au reste du peuple, et leur dis :
³ Qui est celui qui est demeuré de reste d'entre vous, qui ait vu cette maison dans sa première gloire, et telle que vous la voyez maintenant ? N'est-elle pas comme un rien devant vos yeux, au prix de celle-là ?
⁴ Maintenant donc toi, Zorobabel, fortifie-toi, dit l'Eternel ; aussi toi, Jéhosuah, fils de Jéhotsadak, grand Sacrificateur, fortifie toi ; vous aussi, tout le peuple du pays, fortifiez-vous, dit l'Eternel, et travaillez, car je suis avec vous, dit l'Eternel des armées.
⁵ La parole de [l'alliance] que je traitai avec vous, quand vous sortîtes d'Egypte, et mon esprit demeurent au milieu de vous ; ne craignez point.
⁶ Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées : encore une fois, ce qui [même sera] dans peu de temps, j'ébranlerai les cieux et la terre, la mer, et le sec ;
⁷ Et j'ébranlerai toutes les nations ; et les désirés d'entre toutes les nations viendront ; et je remplirai de gloire cette maison ; a dit l'Eternel des armées.
⁸ L'argent est à moi, et l'or est à moi, dit l'Eternel des armées.
⁹ La gloire ce cette dernière maison-ci sera plus grande que celle de la première, a dit l'Eternel des armées, et je mettrai la paix en ce lieux-ci, dit l'Eternel des armées.
¹⁰ Le vingt-quatrième jour du neuvième mois de la seconde année de Darius, la parole de l'Eternel fut [adressée] par le moyen d'Aggée le Prophète, en disant :
¹¹ Ainsi a dit l'Eternel des armées : Interroge maintenant les Sacrificateurs touchant la loi, en disant :
¹² Si quelqu'un porte au coin de son vêtement de la chair sanctifiée, et qu'il touche du coin de son vêtement à du pain, ou à quelque chose cuite, ou à du vin, ou à de l'huile, ou à quelque viande que ce soit, cela en sera-t-il sanctifié ? Et les Sacrificateurs répondirent, et dirent : Non.
¹³ Alors Aggée dit : Si celui qui est souillé pour un mort touche toutes ces choses-là, ne seront-elles pas souillées ? Et les Sacrificateurs répondirent, et dirent : Elles seront souillées.
¹⁴ Alors Aggée répondit, et dit : Ainsi est ce peuple, et ainsi est cette nation devant ma face, dit l'Eternel ; et ainsi est toute l'oeuvre de leurs mains ; même ce qu'ils offrent ici, est souillé.
¹⁵ Maintenant donc mettez ceci, je vous prie, dans votre coeur ; depuis ce jour et au-dessus, avant qu'on remît pierre sur pierre au Temple de l'Eternel,
¹⁶ Avant cela, [dis-je], quand on est venu à un monceau [de blé], [au lieu] de vingt [mesures], il ne s'y en est trouvé que dix ; et quand on est venu au pressoir, au lieu de puiser du pressoir cinquante [mesures], il ne s'y en est trouvé que vingt.
¹⁷ Je vous ai frappés de brûlure, et de nielle, et de grêle dans tout le labeur de vos mains ; et vous n'êtes point [retournés] à moi, dit l'Eternel.
¹⁸ Mettez maintenant ceci dans votre coeur ; depuis ce jour, et au-dessus, depuis, [dis-je], le vingt-quatrième jour du neuvième mois, depuis ce jour-ci auquel les fondements du Temple de l'Eternel ont été jetés, mettez ceci dans votre coeur ;
¹⁹ Ce que vous avez semé [est-il] encore [retourné] au grenier ? Même jusqu'à la vigne, et au figuier, et au grenadier, et à l'olivier, rien n'a rapporté ; [mais] depuis ce jour-ci je donnerai la bénédiction.
²⁰ Et la parole de l'Eternel fut [adressée] pour la seconde fois à Aggée, le vingt-quatrième jour du mois, en disant :
²¹ Parle à Zorobabel, Gouverneur de Juda, en disant : J'ébranlerai les cieux et la terre ;
²² Je renverserai le trône des Royaumes, je détruirai la force des Royaumes des Nations ! je renverserai les chariots, et ceux qui montent dessus ; et les chevaux, et ceux qui sont montés dessus, seront abattus, chacun par l'épée de son frère.
²³ En ce temps là, dit l'Eternel des armées, je te prendrai, ô Zorobabel ! fils de Salathiel, mon serviteur, dit l'Eternel, et je te mettrai comme un anneau de cachet ; car je t'ai élu, dit l'Eternel des armées.

² In septimo mense, vigesima et prima mensis, factum est verbum Domini in manu Aggæi prophetæ, dicens :
³ Loquere ad Zorobabel, filium Salathiel, ducem Juda, et ad Jesum, filium Josedec, sacerdotem magnum, et ad reliquos populi, dicens :
⁴ [Quis in vobis est derelictus, qui vidit domum istam in gloria sua prima ? et quid vos videtis hanc nunc ? numquid non ita est, quasi non sit in oculis vestris ?
⁵ Et nunc confortare, Zorobabel, dicit Dominus ; et confortare, Jesu, fili Josedec, sacerdos magne ; et confortare, omnis populus terræ, dicit Dominus exercituum : et facite (quoniam ego vobiscum sum, dicit Dominus exercituum)
⁶ verbum quod pepigi vobiscum cum egrederemini de terra Ægypti : et spiritus meus erit in medio vestrum : nolite timere.
⁷ Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Adhuc unum modicum est, et ego commovebo cælum, et terram, et mare, et aridam.
⁸ Et movebo omnes gentes, et veniet desideratus cunctis gentibus : et implebo domum istam gloria, dicit Dominus exercituum.
⁹ Meum est argentum, et meum est aurum, dicit Dominus exercituum.

¹³ Si tulerit homo carnem sanctificatam in ora vestimenti sui, et tetigerit de summitate ejus panem, aut pulmentum, aut vinum, aut oleum, aut omnem cibum, numquid sanctificabitur ? Respondentes autem sacerdotes, dixerunt : Non.
¹⁴ Et dixit Aggæus : Si tetigerit pollutus in anima ex omnibus his, numquid contaminabitur ? Et responderunt sacerdotes, et dixerunt : Contaminabitur.
¹⁵ Et respondit Aggæus, et dixit : [Sic populus iste, et sic gens ista ante faciem meam, dicit Dominus, et sic omne opus manuum eorum : et omnia quæ obtulerunt ibi, contaminata erunt.
¹⁶ Et nunc ponite corda vestra a die hac et supra, antequam poneretur lapis super lapidem in templo Domini.
¹⁷ Cum accederetis ad acervum viginti modiorum, et fierent decem ; et intraretis ad torcular, ut exprimeretis quinquaginta lagenas, et fiebant viginti.
¹⁸ Percussi vos vento urente, et aurugine, et grandine omnia opera manuum vestrarum : et non fuit in vobis qui reverteretur ad me, dicit Dominus.
¹⁹ Ponite corda vestra ex die ista, et in futurum, a die vigesima et quarta noni mensis : a die qua fundamenta jacta sunt templi Domini, ponite super cor vestrum.
²⁰ Numquid jam semen in germine est, et adhuc vinea, et ficus, et malogranatum, et lignum olivæ non floruit ? ex die ista benedicam.]
²¹ Et factum est verbum Domini secundo ad Aggæum in vigesima et quarta mensis, dicens :
²² Loquere ad Zorobabel ducem Juda, dicens : [Ego movebo cælum pariter et terram,
²³ et subvertam solium regnorum, et conteram fortitudinem regni gentium : et subvertam quadrigam et ascensorem ejus, et descendent equi, et ascensores eorum, vir in gladio fratris sui.
²⁴ In die illa, dicit Dominus exercituum, assumam te, Zorobabel, fili Salathiel, serve meus, dicit Dominus : et ponam te quasi signaculum, quia te elegi, dicit Dominus exercituum.]
