¹ Moïse convoqua tout Israël et leur dit : "Écoute, Israël, les lois et les ordonnances que je vous fais entendre aujourd'hui ; apprenez-les et mettez les soigneusement en pratique.
² Yahweh, notre Dieu, a conclu avec nous une alliance en Horeb.
³ Ce n'est point avec nos pères que Yahweh a conclu cette alliance, c'est avec nous, qui sommes ici aujourd'hui tous vivants.
⁴ Yahweh vous parla face à face sur la montagne, du milieu du feu,
⁵ ‒ Je me tenais alors entre Yahweh et vous, pour rapporter sa parole ; car vous aviez peur du feu, et vous ne montâtes point sur la montagne. ‒ Il dit :
⁶ "Je suis Yahweh, ton Dieu, qui t'ai fait sortir du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude.
⁷ Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux devant ma face.
⁸ Tu ne te feras point d'image taillée, ni aucune figure de ce qui est en haut dans le ciel, ou de ce qui est en bas sur la terre, ou de ce qui est dans les eaux au-dessous de la terre.
⁹ Tu ne te prosterneras point devant eux et ne les serviras point ; car moi, Yahweh, ton Dieu, je suis un Dieu jaloux, punissant l'iniquité des pères sur leur enfants, sur la troisième et sur la quatrième génération, pour ceux qui me haïssent,
¹⁰ et faisant miséricorde jusqu'à mille générations, pour ceux qui m'aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
¹¹ Tu ne prendras point le nom de Yahweh, ton Dieu en vain ; car Yahweh ne laissera pas impuni celui qui prendra son nom en vain.
¹² Observe le jour du sabbat, pour le sanctifier, comme te l'a ordonné Yahweh, ton Dieu.
¹³ Pendant six jours tu travailleras et tu feras tout ton ouvrage.
¹⁴ Mais le septième jour est un sabbat consacré à Yahweh, ton Dieu : tu ne feras aucun ouvrage, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton boeuf, ni ton âne, ni aucune de tes bêtes, ni l'étranger qui est dans tes portes, afin que ton serviteur et ta servante se reposent comme toi.
¹⁵ Tu te souviendras que tu as été esclave au pays d'Égypte, et que Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'en a fait sortir d'une main forte et d'un bras étendu : c'est pourquoi Yahweh, ton Dieu, t'a ordonné d'observer le jour du sabbat.
¹⁶ Honore ton père et ta mère, comme Yahweh, ton Dieu te l'a ordonné, afin que tes jours soient prolongés et que tu sois heureux dans le pays que Yahweh, ton Dieu, te donne.
¹⁷ Tu ne tueras point.
¹⁸ Tu ne commettras point d'adultère.
¹⁹ Tu ne déroberas point.
²⁰ Tu ne porteras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
²¹ Tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain. Tu ne désireras point la maison de ton prochain, ni son champ, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son boeuf, ni son âne, ni rien de ce qui appartient à ton prochain."
²² Telles sont les paroles que Yahweh adressa à toute votre assemblée, sur la montagne, du milieu du feu, de la nuée et de l'obscurité, d'une voix forte ; et il n'ajouta rien. Il les écrivit sur deux tables de pierre, qu'il me donna.
²³ Lorsque vous eûtes entendu la voix du milieu des ténèbres, la montagne étant toute en feu, vous vous approchâtes de moi, tous vos chefs de tribus et vos anciens,
²⁴ et vous dîtes : "Voici que Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous a montré sa gloire et sa grandeur, et nous avons entendu sa voix du milieu du feu ; aujourd'hui nous avons vu Dieu parler à l'homme et l'homme rester vivant.
²⁵ Et maintenant pourquoi mourrions-nous ? Car ce grand feu nous dévorera ; si nous entendons encore la voix de Yahweh, notre Dieu, nous mourrons.
²⁶ Car parmi toute chair, quel est celui qui a entendu, comme nous, la voix du Dieu vivant parlant du milieu du feu, et qui soit demeuré en vie ?
²⁷ Toi, approche-toi, et écoute tout ce que dira Yahweh, notre Dieu : nous l'écouterons et nous le ferons."
²⁸ Yahweh entendit vos paroles tandis que vous me parliez, et Yahweh me dit : "J'ai entendu les paroles que ce peuple t'a adressées : tout ce qu'ils ont dit est bien.
²⁹ Oh ! S'ils avaient toujours ce même coeur pour me craindre et pour observer mes commandements, afin qu'ils soient heureux à jamais, eux et leurs enfants !
³⁰ Va, dis-leur : Retournez dans vos tentes.
³¹ Mais toi, reste ici avec moi, et je te dirai tous les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que tu leur enseigneras, pour qu'ils les mettent en pratique dans le pays que je leur donne en possession.
³² Vous aurez soin de faire ce que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a commandé ; vous ne vous en détournerez ni à droite ni à gauche,
³³ mais vous suivrez en tout la voie que Yahweh, votre Dieu, vous a prescrite, afin que vous viviez et que vous soyez heureux, et que vous prolongiez vos jours dans le pays que vous posséderez."

¹ And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.
² The LORD our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.
³ The LORD made not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.
⁴ The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,
⁵ (I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,
⁶ I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
⁷ Thou shalt have none other gods before me.
⁸ Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:
⁹ Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,
¹⁰ And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.
¹¹ Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
¹² Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee.
¹³ Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:
¹⁴ But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.
¹⁵ And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God commanded thee to keep the sabbath day.
¹⁶ Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
¹⁷ Thou shalt not kill.
¹⁸ Neither shalt thou commit adultery.
¹⁹ Neither shalt thou steal.
²⁰ Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.
²¹ Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.
²² These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he added no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and delivered them unto me.
²³ And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elders;
²⁴ And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.
²⁵ Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.
²⁶ For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?
²⁷ Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.
²⁸ And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.
²⁹ O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!
³⁰ Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.
³¹ But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.
³² Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
³³ Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.

¹ Vocavitque Moyses omnem Israëlem, et dixit ad eum : Audi, Israël, cæremonias atque judicia, quæ ego loquor in auribus vestris hodie : discite ea, et opere complete.
² Dominus Deus noster pepigit nobiscum fœdus in Horeb.
³ Non cum patribus nostris iniit pactum, sed nobiscum qui in præsentiarum sumus, et vivimus.
⁴ Facie ad faciem locutus est nobis in monte de medio ignis.
⁵ Ego sequester et medius fui inter Dominum et vos in tempore illo, ut annuntiarem vobis verba ejus : timuistis enim ignem, et non ascendistis in montem. Et ait :
⁶ Ego Dominus Deus tuus, qui eduxi te de terra Ægypti, de domo servitutis.
⁷ Non habebis deos alienos in conspectu meo.
⁸ Non facies tibi sculptile, nec similitudinem omnium, quæ in cælo sunt desuper, et quæ in terra deorsum, et quæ versantur in aquis sub terra.
⁹ Non adorabis ea, et non coles. Ego enim sum Dominus Deus tuus : Deus æmulator, reddens iniquitatem patrum super filios in tertiam et quartam generationem his qui oderunt me :
¹⁰ et faciens misericordiam in multa millia diligentibus me, et custodientibus præcepta mea.
¹¹ Non usurpabis nomen Domini Dei tui frustra : quia non erit impunitus qui super re vana nomen ejus assumpserit.
¹² Observa diem sabbati, ut sanctifices eum, sicut præcepit tibi Dominus Deus tuus.

¹⁵ Memento quod et ipse servieris in Ægypto, et eduxerit te inde Dominus Deus tuus in manu forti, et brachio extento. Idcirco præcepit tibi ut observares diem sabbati.

²³ Vos autem postquam audistis vocem de medio tenebrarum, et montem ardere vidistis, accessistis ad me omnes principes tribuum et majores natu, atque dixistis :
²⁴ Ecce ostendit nobis Dominus Deus noster majestatem et magnitudinem suam : vocem ejus audivimus de medio ignis, et probavimus hodie, quod loquente Deo cum homine, vixerit homo.
²⁵ Cur ergo moriemur, et devorabit nos ignis hic maximus ? si enim audierimus ultra vocem Domini Dei nostri, moriemur.
²⁶ Quid est omnis caro, ut audiat vocem Dei viventis, qui de medio ignis loquitur sicut nos audivimus, et possit vivere ?
²⁷ Tu magis accede : et audi cuncta quæ dixerit Dominus Deus noster tibi : loquerisque ad nos, et nos audientes faciemus ea.
²⁸ Quod cum audisset Dominus, ait ad me : Audivi vocem verborum populi hujus quæ locuti sunt tibi : bene omnia sunt locuti.
²⁹ Quis det talem eos habere mentem, ut timeant me, et custodiant universa mandata mea in omni tempore, ut bene sit eis et filiis eorum in sempiternum ?
³⁰ Vade et dic eis : Revertimini in tentoria vestra.
³¹ Tu vero hic sta mecum, et loquar tibi omnia mandata mea, et cæremonias atque judicia : quæ docebis eos, ut faciant ea in terra, quam dabo illis in possessionem.
³² Custodite igitur et facite quæ præcepit Dominus Deus vobis : non declinabitis neque ad dexteram, neque ad sinistram :
³³ sed per viam, quam præcepit Dominus Deus vester, ambulabitis, ut vivatis, et bene sit vobis, et protelentur dies in terra possessionis vestræ.
