¹ Il est un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil et qui pèse lourdement sur l'homme :
² voilà un homme à qui Dieu donne richesses, trésors et gloire ; il ne manque de rien de ce qu'il désire. Mais Dieu ne lui permet pas d'en jouir ; c'est un étranger qui en jouit. C'est là une vanité et un mal fâcheux.
³ Quand un homme aurait cent fils, qu'il vivrait un grand nombre d'années et que les jours de ses années se multiplieraient ; si son âme ne se rassasie pas de biens et que même il n'ait pas de sépulture, je dirai : Plus heureux que lui est un avorton.
⁴ Car l'avorton naît en vain, il s'en va dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres recouvriront son nom.
⁵ Même il n'a ni vu, ni connu le soleil. Il y a plus de repos pour lui que pour cet homme.
⁶ Dût-il vivre deux fois mille ans sans voir le bonheur... tout ne va-t-il pas dans un même lieu ?
⁷ Tout le travail de l'homme est pour sa bouche ; et pourtant son âme n'est jamais rassasiée.
⁸ Car quel avantage le sage a-t-il sur l'insensé ? Quel avantage a le pauvre qui sait se conduire en présence des vivants ?
⁹ Il vaut mieux voir de ses yeux que de laisser errer ses désirs. Cela aussi est vanité et poursuite du vent.
¹⁰ Ce qui existe a dès longtemps été appelé par son nom, et ce qu'un homme sera est déterminé, et il ne peut contester avec Celui qui est plus fort que lui.
¹¹ Multiplier les paroles, c'est multiplier la vanité. Quel avantage en revient-il à l'homme ?
¹² Qui sait en effet ce qui est bon pour l'homme dans la vie, pendant les jours de sa vie de vanité qu'il traverse comme une ombre ? Car qui peut indiquer à l'homme ce qui sera après lui sous le soleil ?

¹ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:
² A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
³ If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
⁴ For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.
⁵ Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
⁶ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
⁷ All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.
⁸ For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?
⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.
¹⁰ That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.
¹¹ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?
¹² For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
