³ Car les statuts des nations sont une vanité. Ce n'est que du bois qu'on coupe à la forêt, un ouvrage que le sculpteur façonne avec la hache. ⁴ On le décore avec l'argent et l'or, on le fixe avec des clous et un marteau pour qu'il ne branle pas. ⁵ Ces dieux-là sont comme un poteau dans un champ de concombres ; ils ne parlent point ; il faut qu'on les porte, parce qu'ils ne marchent pas. Ne les craignez point : ils ne font point de mal ; ils n'ont pas non plus le pouvoir de faire du bien.

³ For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. ⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. ⁵ They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
