¹ Parole de Jéhovah qui fut adressée à Jérémie à l'occasion de la sécheresse.
² Juda est dans le deuil ; ses portes languissent ; elles gisent sur la terre en vêtements noirs, et le cri de Jérusalem s'élève.
³ Les grands envoient les petits chercher de l'eau ; ceux-ci vont aux citernes, ne trouvent pas d'eau, reviennent avec des vases vides ; confus et honteux, ils se couvrent la tête.
⁴ À cause du sol crevassé, parce qu'il n'y a pas eu de pluie sur la terre, les laboureurs sont confondus, ils se couvrent la tête.
⁵ Même la biche dans la campagne met bas et abandonne ses petits, parce qu'il n'y a pas d'herbe.
⁶ Les onagres se tiennent sur les hauteurs, aspirant l'air comme des chacals ; leurs yeux s'éteignent, parce qu'il n'y a pas de verdure.
⁷ Si nos iniquités témoignent contre nous, Jéhovah, agis pour l'honneur de ton nom ; car nos infidélités sont nombreuses ; nous avons péché contre toi.
⁸ O toi, l'espérance d'Israël, son libérateur au temps de la détresse, pourquoi serais-tu un étranger dans le pays, comme un voyageur qui y dresse sa tente pour la nuit ?
⁹ Pourquoi serais-tu comme un homme éperdu, comme un héros impuissant à délivrer ? Pourtant tu habites au milieu de nous ; Jéhovah ; Ton nom est invoqué sur nous, ne nous abandonne pas !
¹⁰ Voici que Jéhovah répond à ce peuple : oui, ils aiment à courir çà et là, et ils ne savent pas retenir leurs pieds. Jéhovah ne met plus de plaisir en eux ; Il va maintenant se souvenir de leurs iniquités et châtier leurs péchés.
¹¹ Et Jéhovah me dit : "N'intercède pas en faveur de ce peuple.
¹² Quand ils jeûneront, je n'écouterai pas leurs supplications ; quand ils m'offriront des holocaustes et des offrandes, Je ne les agréerai pas ; car je veux les détruire par l'épée, la famine et la peste."
¹³ Et je répondis : "ah ! Seigneur, Jéhovah, ce sont les prophètes qui leur disent : vous ne verrez point d'épée, et vous n'aurez point de famine ; mais je vous donnerai dans ce lieu-ci une paix assurée."
¹⁴ Et Jéhovah me dit : "c'est le mensonge que les prophètes prophétisent en mon nom ; Je ne les ai pas envoyés, je ne leur ai point donné d'ordre, et je ne leur ai point parlé ; visions mensongères, vaines divinations, imposture de leur propre coeur, voilà leurs prophéties."
¹⁵ C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Jéhovah au sujet des prophètes qui prophétisent en mon nom sans que Je les aie envoyés, et qui disent : "Il n'y aura dans ce pays ni épée ni famine." Ils périront par l'épée et par la famine, Ces prophètes de mensonge.
¹⁶ Et les gens auxquels ils prophétisent seront jetés dans les rues de Jérusalem par la famine et par l'épée, et personne ne leur donnera la sépulture, à eux, à leurs femmes, à leurs fils et à leurs filles, et je verserai sur eux leur méchanceté.
¹⁷ Et tu leur diras cette parole : mes yeux se fondront en larmes la nuit et le jour, et ne cesseront pas de pleurer ; car la vierge, fille de mon peuple, va être frappée d'un grand désastre ; ce sera une plaie douloureuse.
¹⁸ Si je vais dans les champs, voici des hommes que le glaive a percés ; si j'entre dans la ville, voilà des gens que consume la faim. Le prophète lui-même et le prêtre sont errants, dans un pays qu'ils ne connaissaient pas.
¹⁹ As-tu donc entièrement rejeté Juda ? Ton âme a-t-elle pris Sion en dégoût ? Pourquoi nous as-tu frappés sans qu'il y ait pour nous de guérison ? Nous attendions la paix, et il ne vient rien de bon ; le temps de la guérison, et voici l'épouvante.
²⁰ Jéhovah, nous reconnaissons notre méchanceté, l'iniquité de nos pères, car nous avons péché contre toi ;
²¹ Pour l'amour de ton nom, ne dédaigne pas, ne profane pas le trône de ta gloire ; souviens-toi, ne romps pas ton alliance, avec nous.
²² Parmi les vaines idoles des nations, en est-il qui fasse pleuvoir ? Est-ce le ciel qui donnera la pluie ? N'est-ce pas toi, Jéhovah, notre Dieu ? Nous espérons en toi, car c'est toi qui as fait toutes ces choses.

¹ The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah concerning the dearth.
² Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languish; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up.
³ And their nobles have sent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.
⁴ Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.
⁵ Yea, the hind also calved in the field, and forsook it, because there was no grass.
⁶ And the wild asses did stand in the high places, they snuffed up the wind like dragons; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.
⁷ O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
⁸ O the hope of Israel, the saviour thereof in time of trouble, why shouldest thou be as a stranger in the land, and as a wayfaring man that turneth aside to tarry for a night?
⁹ Why shouldest thou be as a man astonied, as a mighty man that cannot save? yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.
¹⁰ Thus saith the LORD unto this people, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and visit their sins.
¹¹ Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.
¹² When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence.
¹³ Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, the prophets say unto them, Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place.
¹⁴ Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.
¹⁵ Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.
¹⁶ And the people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness upon them.
¹⁷ Therefore thou shalt say this word unto them; Let mine eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease: for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous blow.
¹⁸ If I go forth into the field, then behold the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then behold them that are sick with famine! yea, both the prophet and the priest go about into a land that they know not.
¹⁹ Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul lothed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? we looked for peace, and there is no good; and for the time of healing, and behold trouble!
²⁰ We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers: for we have sinned against thee.
²¹ Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.
²² Are there any among the vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.

¹ Quod factum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam, de sermonibus siccitatis.
² [Luxit Judæa, et portæ ejus corruerunt, et obscuratæ sunt in terra, et clamor Jerusalem ascendit.
³ Majores miserunt minores suos ad aquam : venerunt ad hauriendum. Non invenerunt aquam : reportaverunt vasa sua vacua. Confusi sunt, et afflicti, et operuerunt capita sua.
⁴ Propter terræ vastitatem, quia non venit pluvia in terram, confusi sunt agricolæ : operuerunt capita sua.
⁵ Nam et cerva in agro peperit, et reliquit, quia non erat herba.
⁶ Et onagri steterunt in rupibus ; traxerunt ventum quasi dracones : defecerunt oculi eorum, quia non erat herba.
⁷ Si iniquitates nostræ responderint nobis, Domine, fac propter nomen tuum : quoniam multæ sunt aversiones nostræ : tibi peccavimus.
⁸ Exspectatio Israël, salvator ejus in tempore tribulationis, quare quasi colonus futurus es in terra, et quasi viator declinans ad manendum ?
⁹ quare futurus es velut vir vagus, ut fortis qui non potest salvare ? Tu autem in nobis es, Domine, et nomen tuum invocatum est super nos : ne derelinquas nos.
¹⁰ Hæc dicit Dominus populo huic, qui dilexit movere pedes suos, et non quievit, et Domino non placuit : Nunc recordabitur iniquitatum eorum, et visitabit peccata eorum.
¹¹ Et dixit Dominus ad me : Noli orare pro populo isto in bonum.
¹² Cum jejunaverint, non exaudiam preces eorum, et si obtulerint holocautomata et victimas, non suscipiam ea : quoniam gladio, et fame, et peste consumam eos.]
¹³ Et dixi : [A, a, a, Domine Deus : prophetæ dicunt eis : Non videbitis gladium, et fames non erit in vobis : sed pacem veram dabit vobis in loco isto.]
¹⁴ Et dicit Dominus ad me : [Falso prophetæ vaticinantur in nomine meo : non misi eos, et non præcepi eis, neque locutus sum ad eos. Visionem mendacem, et divinationem, et fraudulentiam, et seductionem cordis sui, prophetant vobis.
¹⁵ Idcirco hæc dicit Dominus de prophetis qui prophetant in nomine meo, quos ego non misi, dicentes : Gladius et fames non erit in terra hac : In gladio et fame consumentur prophetæ illi.
¹⁶ Et populi quibus prophetant erunt projecti in viis Jerusalem præ fame et gladio, et non erit qui sepeliat eos : ipsi et uxores eorum, filii et filiæ eorum : et effundam super eos malum suum.
¹⁷ Et dices ad eos verbum istud : Deducant oculi mei lacrimam per noctem et diem, et non taceant, quoniam contritione magna contrita est virgo filia populi mei, plaga pessima vehementer.
¹⁸ Si egressus fuero ad agros, ecce occisi gladio : et si introiero in civitatem, ecce attenuati fame. Propheta quoque et sacerdos abierunt in terram quam ignorabant.
¹⁹ Numquid projiciens abjecisti Judam ? aut Sion abominata est anima tua ? quare ergo percussisti nos ita ut nulla sit sanitas ? Exspectavimus pacem, et non est bonum : et tempus curationis, et ecce turbatio.
²⁰ Cognovimus, Domine, impietates nostras, iniquitates patrum nostrorum, quia peccavimus tibi.
²¹ Ne des nos in opprobrium, propter nomen tuum, neque facias nobis contumeliam solii gloriæ tuæ : recordare, ne irritum facias fœdus tuum nobiscum.
²² Numquid sunt in sculptilibus gentium qui pluant ? aut cæli possunt dare imbres ? nonne tu es Dominus Deus noster, quem exspectavimus ? tu enim fecisti omnia hæc.]
