¹ Concerning the Ammonites, thus saith the LORD; Hath Israel no sons? hath he no heir? why then doth their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in his cities?
² Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be a desolate heap, and her daughters shall be burned with fire: then shall Israel be heir unto them that were his heirs, saith the LORD.
³ Howl, O Heshbon, for Ai is spoiled: cry, ye daughters of Rabbah, gird you with sackcloth; lament, and run to and fro by the hedges; for their king shall go into captivity, and his priests and his princes together.
⁴ Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?
⁵ Behold, I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts, from all those that be about thee; and ye shall be driven out every man right forth; and none shall gather up him that wandereth.
⁶ And afterward I will bring again the captivity of the children of Ammon, saith the LORD.
⁷ Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?
⁸ Flee ye, turn back, dwell deep, O inhabitants of Dedan; for I will bring the calamity of Esau upon him, the time that I will visit him.
⁹ If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.
¹⁰ But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he is not.
¹¹ Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.
¹² For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
¹³ For I have sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that Bozrah shall become a desolation, a reproach, a waste, and a curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual wastes.
¹⁴ I have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent unto the heathen, saying, Gather ye together, and come against her, and rise up to the battle.
¹⁵ For, lo, I will make thee small among the heathen, and despised among men.
¹⁶ Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, and the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD.
¹⁷ Also Edom shall be a desolation: every one that goeth by it shall be astonished, and shall hiss at all the plagues thereof.
¹⁸ As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.
¹⁹ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?
²⁰ Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them.
²¹ The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.
²² Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
²³ Concerning Damascus. Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil tidings: they are fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it cannot be quiet.
²⁴ Damascus is waxed feeble, and turneth herself to flee, and fear hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her, as a woman in travail.
²⁵ How is the city of praise not left, the city of my joy!
²⁶ Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, and all the men of war shall be cut off in that day, saith the LORD of hosts.
²⁷ And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall consume the palaces of Benhadad.
²⁸ Concerning Kedar, and concerning the kingdoms of Hazor, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon shall smite, thus saith the LORD; Arise ye, go up to Kedar, and spoil the men of the east.
²⁹ Their tents and their flocks shall they take away: they shall take to themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels; and they shall cry unto them, Fear is on every side.
³⁰ Flee, get you far off, dwell deep, O ye inhabitants of Hazor, saith the LORD; for Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived a purpose against you.
³¹ Arise, get you up unto the wealthy nation, that dwelleth without care, saith the LORD, which have neither gates nor bars, which dwell alone.
³² And their camels shall be a booty, and the multitude of their cattle a spoil: and I will scatter into all winds them that are in the utmost corners; and I will bring their calamity from all sides thereof, saith the LORD.
³³ And Hazor shall be a dwelling for dragons, and a desolation for ever: there shall no man abide there, nor any son of man dwell in it.
³⁴ The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against Elam in the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, saying,
³⁵ Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Behold, I will break the bow of Elam, the chief of their might.
³⁶ And upon Elam will I bring the four winds from the four quarters of heaven, and will scatter them toward all those winds; and there shall be no nation whither the outcasts of Elam shall not come.
³⁷ For I will cause Elam to be dismayed before their enemies, and before them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, even my fierce anger, saith the LORD; and I will send the sword after them, till I have consumed them:
³⁸ And I will set my throne in Elam, and will destroy from thence the king and the princes, saith the LORD.
³⁹ But it shall come to pass in the latter days, that I will bring again the captivity of Elam, saith the LORD.

¹ Pour les enfants d'Ammon. Ainsi a dit l'Éternel: Israël n'a-t-il point de fils? N'a-t-il point d'héritier? Pourquoi Malcam hérite-t-il de Gad, et son peuple habite-t-il dans ses villes?
² C'est pourquoi les jours viennent, dit l'Éternel, où je ferai entendre le cri de guerre vers Rabba des enfants d'Ammon; elle deviendra un monceau de ruines, et les villes de son ressort seront consumées par le feu, et Israël possédera ceux qui l'auront possédé, a dit l'Éternel.
³ Hurle, Hesbon! car Haï est saccagée; filles de Rabba, criez, revêtez-vous de sacs, lamentez-vous, courez çà et là le long des murailles. Car Malcam ira en captivité, avec ses sacrificateurs et ses chefs.
⁴ Pourquoi te glorifies-tu de tes vallées? Le sang coulera dans ta vallée, fille infidèle, qui te confies dans tes trésors et dis: Qui viendra contre moi?
⁵ Voici, je vais faire venir de tous tes environs la terreur contre toi, dit le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées; et vous serez chassés chacun devant soi, et personne ne rassemblera les fugitifs.
⁶ Mais, après cela, je ramènerai les captifs des enfants d'Ammon, dit l'Éternel.
⁷ Pour Édom. Ainsi a dit l'Éternel des armées: N'y a-t-il plus de sagesse dans Théman? Le conseil manque-t-il aux hommes entendus? Leur sagesse s'est-elle évanouie?
⁸ Fuyez, tournez le dos, prenez des cavernes pour demeures, habitants de Dédan! car je fais venir sur Ésaü sa calamité, le temps auquel je veux le visiter.
⁹ Si des vendangeurs entraient chez toi, ne laisseraient-ils pas des grappillages? Si c'étaient des voleurs de nuit, ils ne prendraient que ce qui leur suffit.
¹⁰ Mais moi, j'ai dépouillé Ésaü, j'ai découvert ses retraites, il ne peut plus se cacher; sa postérité, ses frères, ses voisins sont dévastés, et il n'est plus.
¹¹ Laisse tes orphelins; je les ferai vivre; et que tes veuves s'assurent en moi!
¹² Car ainsi a dit l'Éternel: Voici, ceux qui ne devaient pas boire la coupe la boiront, et toi, en serais-tu exempt? Tu n'en seras pas exempt; mais tu la boiras certainement.
¹³ Car j'ai juré par moi-même, dit l'Éternel, que Botsra sera réduite en désolation, en opprobre, en désert et en malédiction, et que toutes ses villes deviendront des solitudes éternelles.
¹⁴ Je l'ai entendu de la part de l'Éternel: Un messager est envoyé parmi les nations: "Assemblez-vous, dit-il, et venez contre elle, et levez-vous pour combattre! "
¹⁵ Car voici, je te rendrai petite entre les nations, et méprisée entre les hommes.
¹⁶ Ta présomption, l'orgueil de ton coeur t'a séduite, toi qui habites le creux des rochers et qui occupes le sommet des collines. Quand tu élèverais ton nid comme l'aigle, je te précipiterai de là, dit l'Éternel.
¹⁷ Et l'Idumée sera réduite en désolation; tellement que quiconque passera près d'elle en sera étonné, et sifflera à cause de toutes ses plaies.
¹⁸ Comme dans la destruction de Sodome et de Gomorrhe, et des villes voisines, a dit l'Éternel, il n'y habitera personne et aucun fils d'homme n'y séjournera.
¹⁹ Voici, tel qu'un lion, il monte des bords orgueilleux du Jourdain vers la demeure forte. Car, en un moment, je le ferai courir sur elle, et je donnerai mission contre elle à celui que j'ai choisi. Car qui est semblable à moi? Qui m'assignera? Et quel est le berger qui me résistera?
²⁰ C'est pourquoi, écoutez la résolution que l'Éternel a prise contre Édom, et les desseins qu'il a formés contre les habitants de Théman: Certainement on les traînera comme les plus petits du troupeau! Certainement on détruira sur eux leurs demeures!
²¹ Au bruit de leur chute, la terre tremble, et la voix de leur cri se fait entendre jusqu'à la mer Rouge.
²² Voici, il monte comme l'aigle, il vole, il étend ses ailes sur Botsra, et en ce jour-là le coeur des héros d'Édom sera comme le coeur d'une femme en travail.
²³ Pour Damas. Hamath et Arpad sont confondues; car elles ont appris de fâcheuses nouvelles; elles défaillent! C'est comme la mer par une tourmente; elle ne peut s'apaiser.
²⁴ Damas n'a plus de force; elle se tourne pour fuir; la peur s'empare d'elle; l'angoisse et les douleurs la saisissent comme celle qui enfante.
²⁵ Comment n'est-elle point abandonnée, la ville fameuse, la cité de ma joie?
²⁶ C'est pourquoi ses jeunes gens tomberont dans ses rues, et tous les hommes de guerre périront en ce jour-là, dit l 'Éternel des armées.
²⁷ Et je mettrai le feu dans les murs de Damas, et il dévorera les palais de Ben-Hadad.
²⁸ Pour Kédar et les royaumes de Hatsor, que frappa Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone. Ainsi a dit l'Éternel: Levez-vous, montez vers Kédar, et détruisez les enfants de l'Orient.
²⁹ On enlèvera leurs tentes et leurs troupeaux; on s'emparera de leurs tapis, de tous leurs bagages et de leurs chameaux, et on criera: "Frayeur de tous côtés! "
³⁰ Fuyez! Éloignez-vous tant que vous pourrez! Prenez dans les creux vos demeures, habitants de Hatsor! dit l'Éternel; car Nébucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, a formé contre vous un dessein, il a pris une résolution contre vous.
³¹ Levez-vous; montez vers une nation qui est en repos et qui habite en assurance, dit l'Éternel. Ils n'ont ni portes, ni barres; ils habitent seuls.
³² Leurs chameaux seront au pillage, et la multitude de leur bétail sera une proie. Je les disperserai à tout vent, ces gens qui se rasent les coins de la barbe, et je ferai venir leur calamité de tous les côtés, dit l'Éternel.
³³ Et Hatsor deviendra un repaire de chacals et un désert à toujours. Il n'y demeurera personne, et aucun fils d'homme n'y séjournera!
³⁴ La parole de l'Éternel qui fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, touchant Élam, au commencement du règne de Sédécias, roi de Juda, en ces termes:
³⁵ Ainsi a dit l'Éternel des armées: Voici, je vais rompre l'arc d'Élam, leur principale force.
³⁶ Et je ferai venir contre Élam, les quatre vents, des quatre extrémités des cieux; et je les disperserai par tous ces vents-là, et il n'y aura pas de nation où ne viennent des fugitifs d'Élam.
³⁷ Je ferai que les Élamites seront épouvantés devant leurs ennemis et devant ceux qui cherchent leur vie; et j'amènerai sur eux le malheur, l'ardeur de ma colère, dit l'Éternel; et j'enverrai après eux l'épée, jusqu'à ce que je les aie consumés.
³⁸ Et je placerai mon trône dans Élam, et j'en détruirai les rois et les chefs, dit l'Éternel.
³⁹ Mais il arrivera qu'aux derniers jours je ramènerai les captifs d'Élam, dit l'Éternel.

² Ideo ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et auditum faciam super Rabbath filiorum Ammon fremitum prælii, et erit in tumultum dissipata, filiæque ejus igni succendentur, et possidebit Israël possessores suos, ait Dominus.
³ Ulula, Hesebon, quoniam vastata est Hai ; clamate, filiæ Rabbath : accingite vos ciliciis, plangite et circuite per sepes, quoniam Melchom in transmigrationem ducetur, sacerdotes ejus et principes ejus simul.
⁴ Quid gloriaris in vallibus ? defluxit vallis tua, filia delicata, quæ confidebas in thesauris tuis, et dicebas : Quis veniet ad me ?
⁵ Ecce ego inducam super te terrorem, ait Dominus Deus exercituum, ab omnibus qui sunt in circuitu tuo : et dispergemini singuli a conspectu vestro, nec erit qui congreget fugientes.

⁷ Ad Idumæam. [Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Numquid non ultra est sapientia in Theman ? periit consilium a filiis ; inutilis facta est sapientia eorum.
⁸ Fugite, et terga vertite ; descendite in voraginem, habitatores Dedan : quoniam perditionem Esau adduxi super eum, tempus visitationis ejus.
⁹ Si vindemiatores venissent super te, non reliquissent racemum : si fures in nocte rapuissent quod sufficeret sibi.
¹⁰ Ego vero discooperui Esau : revelavi abscondita ejus, et celari non poterit : vastatum est semen ejus, et fratres ejus, et vicini ejus, et non erit.
¹¹ Relinque pupillos tuos : ego faciam eos vivere : et viduæ tuæ in me sperabunt.
¹² Quia hæc dicit Dominus : Ecce quibus non erat judicium ut biberent calicem, bibentes bibent : et tu, quasi innocens relinqueris ? non eris innocens, sed bibens bibes.
¹³ Quia per memetipsum juravi, dicit Dominus, quod in solitudinem, et in opprobrium, et in desertum, et in maledictionem erit Bosra, et omnes civitates ejus erunt in solitudines sempiternas.
¹⁴ Auditum audivi a Domino, et legatus ad gentes missus est : Congregamini, et venite contra eam, et consurgamus in prælium.

¹⁹ Ecce quasi leo ascendet de superbia Jordanis ad pulchritudinem robustam, quia subito currere faciam eum ad illam. Et quis erit electus, quem præponam ei ? quis enim similis mei ? et quis sustinebit me ? et quis est iste pastor, qui resistat vultui meo ?
²⁰ Propterea audite consilium Domini quod iniit de Edom, et cogitationes ejus quas cogitavit de habitatoribus Theman : si non dejecerint eos parvuli gregis, nisi dissipaverint cum eis habitaculum eorum.
²¹ A voce ruinæ eorum commota est terra ; clamor in mari Rubro auditus est vocis ejus.
²² Ecce quasi aquila ascendet, et avolabit, et expandet alas suas super Bosran : et erit cor fortium Idumææ in die illa quasi cor mulieris parturientis.]
²³ Ad Damascum. [Confusa est Emath et Arphad, quia auditum pessimum audierunt : turbati sunt in mari ; præ sollicitudine quiescere non potuit.
²⁴ Dissoluta est Damascus, versa est in fugam : tremor apprehendit eam, angustia et dolores tenuerunt eam quasi parturientem.
²⁵ Quomodo dereliquerunt civitatem laudabilem, urbem lætitiæ ?
²⁶ Ideo cadent juvenes ejus in plateis ejus, et omnes viri prælii conticescent in die illa, ait Dominus exercituum.
²⁷ Et succendam ignem in muro Damasci, et devorabit mœnia Benadad.]
²⁸ Ad Cedar, et ad regna Asor, quæ percussit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis. [Hæc dicit Dominus : Surgite, et ascendite ad Cedar, et vastate filios orientis.
²⁹ Tabernacula eorum, et greges eorum capient : pelles eorum, et omnia vasa eorum, et camelos eorum tollent sibi, et vocabunt super eos formidinem in circuitu.
³⁰ Fugite, abite vehementer, in voraginibus sedete, qui habitatis Asor, ait Dominus : iniit enim contra vos Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis consilium, et cogitavit adversum vos cogitationes.
³¹ Consurgite, et ascendite ad gentem quietam, et habitantem confidenter, ait Dominus : non ostia, nec vectes eis : soli habitant.
³² Et erunt cameli eorum in direptionem, et multitudo jumentorum in prædam : et dispergam eos in omnem ventum, qui sunt attonsi in comam, et ex omni confinio eorum adducam interitum super eos, ait Dominus.
³³ Et erit Asor in habitaculum draconum, deserta usque in æternum : non manebit ibi vir, nec incolet eam filius hominis.]
³⁴ Quod facum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam adversus Ælam, in principio regni Sedeciæ regis Juda, dicens :
³⁵ [Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Ecce ego confringam arcum Ælam, et summam fortitudinem eorum :
³⁶ et inducam super Ælam quatuor ventos a quatuor plagis cæli, et ventilabo eos in omnes ventos istos, et non erit gens ad quam non perveniant profugi Ælam.
³⁷ Et pavere faciam Ælam coram inimicis suis, et in conspectu quærentium animam eorum : et adducam super eos malum, iram furoris mei, dicit Dominus, et mittam post eos gladium donec consumam eos.
³⁸ Et ponam solium meum in Ælam, et perdam inde reges et principes, ait Dominus.
