¹ Job prit la parole et dit :
² Assurément vous êtes seuls des hommes, Et avec vous mourra la sagesse !
³ Moi aussi, j'ai une raison comme vous, Je ne vous suis pas inférieur... Qui ne sait tout ce que vous dites là ?
⁴ Je suis devenu un homme qui est la risée de ses amis, Moi qui invoquais Dieu et il me répondait ; La risée !... moi juste et intègre !
⁵ Mépris au malheur ! voilà les pensées des heureux ; On frappe ceux dont le pied chancelle,
⁶ Tandis que les tentes des brigands sont en paix, Que les contempteurs de Dieu vivent en pleine sécurité, Eux qui ont leur dieu à la main !
⁷ Cependant, interroge les bêtes, et elles t'instruiront ; Les oiseaux des cieux, et ils t'en remontreront.
⁸ Adresse tes méditations à la terre, et elle t'instruira ; Les poissons de la mer te feront leurs récits.
⁹ Parmi eux tous, qui ne sait Que c'est la main de l'Eternel qui a fait toutes ces choses,
¹⁰ Lui qui tient dans sa main la vie de tous les êtres, Et l'âme de toute créature humaine.
¹¹ L'oreille ne discerne-t-elle pas les paroles, Comme le palais distingue les aliments ?
¹² Les cheveux blancs possèdent la sagesse ; Une longue vie donne l'intelligence.
¹³ Auprès de lui se trouvent sagesse et puissance, A lui sont conseil et intelligence.
¹⁴ Il renverse, et l'on ne rebâtit pas ; Il enferme quelqu'un, et l'on n'ouvre pas ;
¹⁵ Il arrête les eaux, et elles tarissent ; Il les lâche, et elles bouleversent la terre.
¹⁶ Auprès de lui il y a force et prudence ; Il dispose du trompeur et du trompé,
¹⁷ Il emmène en exil les conseillers, Il fait délirer les juges.
¹⁸ Il relâche l'autorité des rois, Il ceint leurs reins d'une corde.
¹⁹ Il emmène les sacrificateurs en exil, Il renverse les autorités établies.
²⁰ Il enlève la parole aux hommes les plus sûrs, Il ôte le discernement aux vieillards.
²¹ Il verse le mépris sur les nobles, Il détache la ceinture des puissants.
²² Il fait sortir de l'obscurité les choses profondes, Il fait sortir à la lumière l'ombre de la mort.
²³ Il fait prospérer les peuples et il les détruit, Il étend les nations et les emmène.
²⁴ Il enlève la raison aux chefs des multitudes, Et les fait errer dans un désert sans chemin.
²⁵ Ils tâtonnent dans les ténèbres, sans trouver la lumière, Et il les fait errer comme un homme ivre.

¹ And Job answered and said,
² No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.
³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knoweth not such things as these?
⁴ I am as one mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn.
⁵ He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.
⁶ The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God bringeth abundantly.
⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:
⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.
⁹ Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?
¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.
¹¹ Doth not the ear try words? and the mouth taste his meat?
¹² With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.
¹³ With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.
¹⁴ Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
¹⁵ Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up: also he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth.
¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.
¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away spoiled, and maketh the judges fools.
¹⁸ He looseth the bond of kings, and girdeth their loins with a girdle.
¹⁹ He leadeth princes away spoiled, and overthroweth the mighty.
²⁰ He removeth away the speech of the trusty, and taketh away the understanding of the aged.
²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.
²² He discovereth deep things out of darkness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death.
²³ He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.
²⁴ He taketh away the heart of the chief of the people of the earth, and causeth them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way.
²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and he maketh them to stagger like a drunken man.

¹ Respondens autem Job, dixit :
² [Ergo vos estis soli homines, et vobiscum morietur sapientia ?
³ Et mihi est cor sicut et vobis, nec inferior vestri sum ; quis enim hæc quæ nostis ignorat ?
⁴ Qui deridetur ab amico suo, sicut ego, invocabit Deum, et exaudiet eum : deridetur enim justi simplicitas.
⁵ Lampas contempta apud cogitationes divitum parata ad tempus statutum.
⁶ Abundant tabernacula prædonum, et audacter provocant Deum, cum ipse dederit omnia in manus eorum.
⁷ Nimirum interroga jumenta, et docebunt te ; et volatilia cæli, et indicabunt tibi.
⁸ Loquere terræ, et respondebit tibi, et narrabunt pisces maris.
⁹ Quis ignorat quod omnia hæc manus Domini fecerit ?
¹⁰ In cujus manu anima omnis viventis, et spiritus universæ carnis hominis.
¹¹ Nonne auris verba dijudicat ? et fauces comedentis, saporem ?
¹² In antiquis est sapientia, et in multo tempore prudentia.
¹³ Apud ipsum est sapientia et fortitudo ; ipse habet consilium et intelligentiam.
¹⁴ Si destruxerit, nemo est qui ædificet ; si incluserit hominem, nullus est qui aperiat.
¹⁵ Si continuerit aquas, omnia siccabuntur ; et si emiserit eas, subvertent terram.
¹⁶ Apud ipsum est fortitudo et sapientia ; ipse novit et decipientem, et eum qui decipitur.
¹⁷ Adducit consiliarios in stultum finem, et judices in stuporem.
¹⁸ Balteum regum dissolvit, et præcingit fune renes eorum.
¹⁹ Ducit sacerdotes inglorios, et optimates supplantat :
²⁰ commutans labium veracium, et doctrinam senum auferens.
²¹ Effundit despectionem super principes, eos qui oppressi fuerant relevans.
²² Qui revelat profunda de tenebris, et producit in lucem umbram mortis.
²³ Qui multiplicat gentes, et perdit eas, et subversas in integrum restituit.
²⁴ Qui immutat cor principum populi terræ, et decipit eos ut frustra incedant per invium :
²⁵ palpabunt quasi in tenebris, et non in luce, et errare eos faciet quasi ebrios.]
