¹ Comment le Seigneur, dans sa colère, A-t-il couvert d'un nuage la fille de Sion ? Il a précipité des cieux en terre La magnificence d'Israël ; Il ne s'est pas souvenu de son marchepied, Au jour de sa colère.
² Le Seigneur a ruiné sans pitié Toutes les demeures de Jacob ; Il a détruit, dans sa fureur, Les remparts de la fille de Juda. Il les a jetés en terre ; Il a profané sa royauté et ses princes.
³ Il a rompu, dans l'ardeur de sa colère, Toute force d'Israël ; Il a retiré sa droite Devant l'ennemi ; Il a allumé en Jacob comme un feu ardent Qui dévore tout autour.
⁴ Il a bandé son arc comme un ennemi, Il a levé sa droite comme un assaillant, Et il a égorgé Tout ce qui charmait les yeux. Dans la tente de la fille de Sion Il a versé son courroux comme un feu.
⁵ Le Seigneur a été comme un ennemi ; Il a ruiné Israël, Ruiné tous ses palais, Détruit ses remparts. Il a infligé à la fille de Juda Douleur sur douleur.
⁶ Il a forcé son enclos comme un jardin Il a détruit son lieu d'assignation. L'Eternel a fait oublier en Sion Fêtes solennelles et sabbats ; Dans le débordement de sa colère, Il a rejeté avec dédain rois et sacrificateurs.
⁷ Le Seigneur a pris en dégoût son autel, En abomination son sanctuaire ; Il a livré aux mains de l'ennemi Les murs de ses palais. On a poussé des cris dans la maison de l'Eternel, Comme en un jour de fête.
⁸ L'Eternel a médité de détruire Les murs de la fille de Sion ; Il a étendu le cordeau, Il n'a pas retiré sa main qu'il ne les eût détruits. Il a mis en deuil bastion et muraille ; Ensemble ils mènent deuil.
⁹ Ses portes sont enfoncées en terre ; Il en a détruit, brisé les barres. Son roi et ses princes sont chez les Gentils ; Il n'y a plus de loi ; Ses prophètes aussi Ne reçoivent plus de vision de l'Eternel.
¹⁰ Les anciens de la fille de Sion sont assis par terre, Ils se taisent ; Ils ont jeté de la poussière sur leur tête ; Ils sont vêtus de sacs. Les vierges de Jérusalem Courbent leur tête vers la terre.
¹¹ Mes yeux se consument dans les larmes ; Mes entrailles sont émues ; Mon foie s'épanche sur la terre, A cause de la blessure de la fille de mon peuple, A la vue des enfants et des nourrissons Qui défaillent dans les places de la ville.
¹² Ils disent à leurs mères : Où y a-t-il du pain et du vin ? Et ils tombent comme blessés à mort Dans les rues de la ville, Et rendent l'âme Sur le sein de leurs mères.
¹³ Quel exemple te citerai-je ? Qui comparerai-je à toi, fille de Jérusalem ? A qui t'assimiler pour te consoler, O vierge, fille de Sion ? Car ta plaie est grande comme la mer ! Qui te guérirait ?
¹⁴ Tes prophètes ont eu pour toi Des visions vaines et folles ; Ils ne t'ont point dévoilé ton iniquité, Afin de détourner de toi la captivité ; Mais ils t'ont donné pour visions Des oracles de mensonge et de réjection.
¹⁵ Tous les passants battent des mains à ta vue ; Ils sifflent, Ils hochent la tête Au sujet de la fille de Jérusalem ; Est-ce là cette ville qu'on appelait la parfaite en beauté, La joie de toute la terre ?
¹⁶ Tous tes ennemis ouvrent la bouche contre toi ; Ils sifflent, Ils grincent des dents ; Ils disent : Nous les avons engloutis ! C'est là le jour que nous attendions ! Nous y sommes ; nous le voyons !
¹⁷ L'Eternel a exécuté ce qu'il avait résolu ; Il a accompli la parole Qu'il avait prononcée dès les jours anciens. Il a détruit sans pitié ; Il a réjoui l'ennemi à ton sujet ; Il a élevé la corne de tes adversaires.
¹⁸ Leur coeur crie vers le Seigneur ! O muraille de la fille de Sion, Laisse couler tes larmes jour et nuit Comme un torrent ! Ne te donne aucun relâche ! Que ta prunelle n'ait point de repos !
¹⁹ Lève-toi, pousse des cris dans la nuit, Au commencement de chaque veille ; Répands ton coeur comme de l'eau Devant la face du Seigneur ! Lève les mains vers lui pour la vie de tes enfants Qui défaillent de faim aux coins de toutes les rues !
²⁰ Vois, Eternel, et considère ! Qui as-tu jamais traité ainsi ? Des femmes mangent-elles le fruit de leurs entrailles, Les petits enfants qu'elles portent dans leurs bras ? Tue-t-on dans le sanctuaire du Seigneur Les sacrificateurs et les prophètes ?
²¹ Jeunes gens et vieillards Sont couchés par terre dans les rues ; Mes vierges et mes adolescents Sont tombés par l'épée. Tu as égorgé au jour de ta colère ; Tu as immolé ; tu n'as point épargné !
²² Tu as assigné, comme à un jour de convocation, Mes terreurs de toutes parts ; Au jour de la colère de l'Eternel Il n'y a eu ni réchappé, ni fugitif. Ceux que j'avais portés dans mes bras et que j'avais élevés, Mon ennemi les a détruits jusqu'au dernier !

¹ How hath the LORD covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and remembered not his footstool in the day of his anger!
² The LORD hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied: he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah; he hath brought them down to the ground: he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof.
³ He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.
⁴ He hath bent his bow like an enemy: he stood with his right hand as an adversary, and slew all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion: he poured out his fury like fire.
⁵ The LORD was as an enemy: he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.
⁶ And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.
⁷ The LORD hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary, he hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the LORD, as in the day of a solemn feast.
⁸ The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament; they languished together.
⁹ Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the LORD.
¹⁰ The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, and keep silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth: the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.
¹¹ Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.
¹² They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers' bosom.
¹³ What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?
¹⁴ Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment.
¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at thee; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?
¹⁶ All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.
¹⁷ The LORD hath done that which he had devised; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries.
¹⁸ Their heart cried unto the LORD, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease.
¹⁹ Arise, cry out in the night: in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the LORD: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street.
²⁰ Behold, O LORD, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, and children of a span long? shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?
²¹ The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast killed, and not pitied.
²² Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the LORD's anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.

¹ [Quomodo obtexit caligine in furore suo Dominus filiam Sion ; projecit de cælo in terram inclytam Israël, et non est recordatus scabelli pedum suorum in die furoris sui !
² Præcipitavit Dominus, nec pepercit omnia speciosa Jacob : destruxit in furore suo munitiones virginis Juda, et dejecit in terram ; polluit regnum et principes ejus.
³ Confregit in ira furoris sui omne cornu Israël ; avertit retrorsum dexteram suam a facie inimici, et succendit in Jacob quasi ignem flammæ devorantis in gyro.
