¹ Mon fils, n'oublie pas mes leçons, Et que ton coeur garde mes préceptes.
² Car ils te procureront de longs jours et des années de vie, Et ils te donneront le bonheur.
³ Que l'amour et la fidélité ne te quittent pas Attache-les à ton cou, Inscris-les sur la table de ton coeur !
⁴ Et tu obtiendras grâce et saine intelligence Aux yeux de Dieu et des hommes.
⁵ Confie-toi en l'Eternel de tout ton coeur, Et ne t'appuie pas sur ton propre sens.
⁶ Dans toutes tes voies regarde à lui, Et il aplanira tes sentiers.
⁷ Ne sois point sage à tes propres yeux ; Crains l'Eternel et garde-toi du mal.
⁸ Ce sera la santé de ton corps Et le rafraîchissement de tes os.
⁹ Honore l'Eternel de tes biens Et des prémices de tout ton revenu ;
¹⁰ Et tes greniers se rempliront d'abondance, Tes cuves déborderont de moût.
¹¹ Ne repousse pas, ô mon fils, la correction de l'Eternel, Et ne te rebute pas de sa réprimande.
¹² Car l'Eternel reprend celui qu'il aime, Comme un père l'enfant qu'il chérit.
¹³ Heureux l'homme qui a trouvé la sagesse, L'homme qui arrive à posséder l'intelligence !
¹⁴ Car le trafic en est préférable au trafic de l'argent ; Ce qu'elle rapporte est meilleur que l'or fin.
¹⁵ Elle a plus de prix que le corail, Et tout ce que tu as de précieux ne la vaut pas.
¹⁶ Dans sa main droite il y a de longs jours, Dans sa gauche, richesse et honneur.
¹⁷ Ses voies sont des voies agréables, Tous ses sentiers mènent au bonheur.
¹⁸ Elle est un arbre de vie pour ceux qui la saisissent ; Qui la tient ferme est rendu bienheureux.
¹⁹ Par la sagesse l'Eternel a fondé la terre ; Il a établi les cieux par l'intelligence.
²⁰ Par sa science les abîmes se sont fendus Et les nuages ont distillé la rosée.
²¹ Mon fils, ne les perds pas de vue ! Garde la prudence et la réflexion !
²² Elles seront la vie de ton âme, Une parure à ton cou.
²³ Alors tu iras ton chemin en sécurité, Et ton pied ne bronchera pas.
²⁴ Quand tu te coucheras, tu n'auras pas de frayeur ; Couché, tu auras un sommeil agréable.
²⁵ Tu n'auras pas à craindre les terreurs soudaines, Ni l'orage qui fondra sur les méchants.
²⁶ Car l'Eternel sera ton assurance ; Il préservera ton pied de tout piège.
²⁷ Ne refuse pas un bienfait à celui qui y a droit, Quand tu as le pouvoir de l'accorder.
²⁸ Ne dis pas à ton prochain : Va, et reviens ! Demain je donnerai, Quand tu as de quoi donner.
²⁹ Ne machine pas du mal contre ton prochain, Quand il demeure en sécurité près de toi.
³⁰ N'entre pas sans cause en procès avec quelqu'un, Quand il n'a eu aucun tort envers toi.
³¹ Ne porte pas envie à l'homme violent Et ne choisis aucune de ses voies.
³² Car le pervers est en abomination à l'Eternel, Mais [il accorde] son intimité aux hommes droits.
³³ La malédiction de l'Eternel est sur la maison du méchant ; Il bénit la demeure des justes.
³⁴ S'il se moque des moqueurs, Il accorde sa faveur aux humbles.
³⁵ Les sages hériteront la gloire ; L'opprobre emportera les insensés.

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
² For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
⁴ So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
⁵ Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
⁶ In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
⁷ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
⁸ It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
⁹ Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
¹⁰ So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
¹² For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
¹³ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
¹⁴ For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
¹⁹ The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.

²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
²⁵ Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
²⁶ For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
²⁷ Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
²⁸ Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
²⁹ Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
³⁰ Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
³¹ Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
³² For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
³⁴ Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
