Ps 49 (Annotée Neuchâtel)

¹ Au maître chantre. Des fils de Koré. Psaume.
² Ecoutez ceci, vous, tous les peuples, Prêtez l'oreille, vous tous, habitants de la terre,
³ Petits et grands, Riches et pauvres, tous ensemble !
⁴ Ma bouche dira des choses sages, Les méditations de mon coeur, des pensées pleines de sens.
⁵ Je veux prêter l'oreille à la sentence, Révéler mon énigme au son de la harpe.
⁶ Pourquoi craindrais-je, aux jours du malheur, Quand l'iniquité m'enveloppe et s'attache à mes pas ?
⁷ Ils se confient en leur puissance Et se glorifient de leurs grandes richesses...
⁸ L'homme ne peut racheter son frère, Ni payer à Dieu sa rançon,
⁹ Le rachat de l'âme est trop cher, Il faut qu'il y renonce à toujours,
¹⁰ Afin qu'il continue à vivre éternellement, Qu'il ne voie pas la fosse.
¹¹ Il la verra ! Les sages meurent, Et avec eux le fou et l'insensé périssent Et laissent leurs biens à d'autres.
¹² Ils croient que leurs maisons subsistent à toujours, Et leurs demeures de génération en génération ; Ils donnent leurs noms à des terres.
¹³ Mais l'homme dans sa splendeur ne subsistera pas, Il est semblable aux bêtes qui périssent.
¹⁴ Tel est le sort de ceux qui vivent dans une folle sécurité Et de ceux qui, suivant leur exemple, Prennent plaisir à leurs paroles. (Jeu d'instruments).
¹⁵ Comme un troupeau, ils descendent dans le Schéol ; La mort devient leur berger, Et les justes, au matin, les foulent aux pieds. Leur beauté, que dévore le Schéol, n'a plus de demeure !
¹⁶ Mais Dieu rachètera mon âme de la puissance du Schéol, Car il me prendra ! (Jeu d'instruments.)
¹⁷ Ne crains point, quand un homme s'enrichit, Quand la gloire de sa maison s'augmente,
¹⁸ Car à sa mort il n'emportera pas tout cela, Sa magnificence ne descendra pas après lui.
¹⁹ Bien qu'il félicite son âme pendant sa vie Et qu'on te loue parce que tu te traites bien,
²⁰ Elle descendra vers la génération de tes pères, Qui à jamais ne reverront plus la lumière.
²¹ L'homme dans sa splendeur, mais sans intelligence, Est semblable aux bêtes qui périssent.

¹ Hear this, all ye people; give ear, all ye inhabitants of the world:
² Both low and high, rich and poor, together.
³ My mouth shall speak of wisdom; and the meditation of my heart shall be of understanding.
⁴ I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp.
⁵ Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity of my heels shall compass me about?
⁶ They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches;
⁷ None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:
⁸ (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceaseth for ever:)
⁹ That he should still live for ever, and not see corruption.
¹⁰ For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave their wealth to others.
¹¹ Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
¹² Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.
¹³ This their way is their folly: yet their posterity approve their sayings. Selah.
¹⁴ Like sheep they are laid in the grave; death shall feed on them; and the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; and their beauty shall consume in the grave from their dwelling.
¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.
¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased;
¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself.
¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light.
²⁰ Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.
