Ec 8 (Catholique Crampon)

¹ Qui est comme le sage, et qui connaît comme lui l'explication des choses ? La sagesse d'un homme fait briller son visage, et la rudesse de sa face est transfigurée.
² Je te le dis : Observe les ordres du roi, et cela à cause du serment fait à Dieu ; ne te hâte pas de t'éloigner de lui.
³ Ne persiste pas dans une chose mauvaise ; car tout ce qu'il veut, il peut le faire ;
⁴ La parole du roi, en effet, est souveraine, et qui lui dira : « Que fais-tu ? »
⁵ Celui qui observe le précepte n'éprouve rien de mal, et le coeur du sage connaîtra le temps et le jugement.
⁶ Il y a en effet, pour toute chose, un temps et un jugement, car il est grand le mal qui tombera sur l'homme.
⁷ Il ne sait pas ce qui arrivera, et qui lui dira comment cela arrivera ?
⁸ L'homme n'est pas maître de son souffle, pour pouvoir retenir son souffle, et il n'a aucune puissance sur le jour de sa mort ; Il n'y a pas de dispense dans ce combat, et le crime ne saurait sauver son homme.
⁹ J'ai vu toutes ces choses, en appliquant mon coeur à toute l'oeuvre qui se fait sous le soleil, en un temps où un homme domine sur un homme pour le malheur de celui-ci.
¹⁰ Et alors j'ai vu des méchants recevoir la sépulture et entrer dans leur repos, tandis que s'en vont loin du lieu saint et sont oubliés dans la ville des hommes qui ont agi avec droiture ; cela encore est vanité.
¹¹ Parce que la sentence portée contre les mauvaises actions ne s'exécute pas en toute hâte, à cause de cela le coeur des enfants des hommes s'enhardit en eux à faire le mal ;
¹² Mais quoique le pécheur fasse cent fois le mal, et prolonge ses jours, je sais, moi, que le bonheur est pour ceux qui craignent Dieu, qui sont dans la crainte en sa présence.
¹³ Mais le bonheur n'est pas pour le méchant ; et pareil à l'ombre, il ne prolongera pas ses jours, parce qu'il ne craint pas Dieu.
¹⁴ Il est une autre vanité qui se produit sur la terre : c'est qu'il y a des justes auxquels il arrive des choses qui conviennent aux oeuvres des méchants ; et il y a des méchants auxquels il arrive des choses qui conviennent aux oeuvres des justes. Je dis que cela encore est une vanité.
¹⁵ Aussi j'ai loué la joie, parce qu'il n'y a de bonheur pour l'homme sous le soleil qu'à manger et à boire et à se réjouir ; et c'est là ce qui doit l'accompagner dans son travail, pendant les jours de vie que Dieu lui donne sous le soleil.
¹⁶ Lorsque j'ai appliqué mon coeur à connaître la sagesse et à considérer la tâche qui s'accomplit sur la terre, car ni le jour ni la nuit l'homme ne voit de ses yeux le sommeil,
¹⁷ J'ai vu toute l'oeuvre de Dieu ; j'ai vu que l'homme ne saurait trouver l'oeuvre qui se fait sous le soleil ; l'homme se fatigue à chercher, et ne trouve pas ; même si le sage veut connaître, il ne peut trouver.

¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.
² I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
³ Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him.
⁴ Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
⁵ Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment.
⁶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.
⁷ For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
⁸ There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt.
¹⁰ And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.
¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.
¹² Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him:
¹³ But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God.
¹⁴ There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.
¹⁵ Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.
¹⁶ When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:)
¹⁷ Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
