¹ Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
² That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!
³ Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.
⁴ For his princes were at Zoan, and his ambassadors came to Hanes.
⁵ They were all ashamed of a people that could not profit them, nor be an help nor profit, but a shame, and also a reproach.
⁶ The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent, they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses, and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.
⁷ For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.
⁸ Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
⁹ That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD:
¹⁰ Which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:
¹¹ Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.
¹² Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon:
¹³ Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.
¹⁴ And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces; he shall not spare: so that there shall not be found in the bursting of it a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water withal out of the pit.
¹⁵ For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
¹⁶ But ye said, No; for we will flee upon horses; therefore shall ye flee: and, We will ride upon the swift; therefore shall they that pursue you be swift.
¹⁷ One thousand shall flee at the rebuke of one; at the rebuke of five shall ye flee: till ye be left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain, and as an ensign on an hill.
¹⁸ And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.
¹⁹ For the people shall dwell in Zion at Jerusalem: thou shalt weep no more: he will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when he shall hear it, he will answer thee.
²⁰ And though the Lord give you the bread of adversity, and the water of affliction, yet shall not thy teachers be removed into a corner any more, but thine eyes shall see thy teachers:
²¹ And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
²² Ye shall defile also the covering of thy graven images of silver, and the ornament of thy molten images of gold: thou shalt cast them away as a menstruous cloth; thou shalt say unto it, Get thee hence.
²³ Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt sow the ground withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be fat and plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
²⁴ The oxen likewise and the young asses that ear the ground shall eat clean provender, which hath been winnowed with the shovel and with the fan.
²⁵ And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers and streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall.
²⁶ Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.
²⁷ Behold, the name of the LORD cometh from far, burning with his anger, and the burden thereof is heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:
²⁸ And his breath, as an overflowing stream, shall reach to the midst of the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of vanity: and there shall be a bridle in the jaws of the people, causing them to err.
²⁹ Ye shall have a song, as in the night when a holy solemnity is kept; and gladness of heart, as when one goeth with a pipe to come into the mountain of the LORD, to the mighty One of Israel.
³⁰ And the LORD shall cause his glorious voice to be heard, and shall shew the lighting down of his arm, with the indignation of his anger, and with the flame of a devouring fire, with scattering, and tempest, and hailstones.
³¹ For through the voice of the LORD shall the Assyrian be beaten down, which smote with a rod.
³² And in every place where the grounded staff shall pass, which the LORD shall lay upon him, it shall be with tabrets and harps: and in battles of shaking will he fight with it.
³³ For Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

Censure et menaces aux Juifs.

¹ Malheur aux enfants revêches, dit l'Eternel, qui prennent conseil, et non pas de moi ; et qui se forgent des idoles, où mon esprit n'est point, afin d'ajouter péché sur péché.
² Qui sans avoir interrogé ma bouche marchent pour descendre en Egypte, afin de se fortifier de la force de Pharaon, et se retirer sous l'ombre d'Egypte.
³ Car la force de Pharaon vous tournera à honte, et la retraite sous l'ombre d'Egypte [vous tournera] à confusion.
⁴ Car les principaux de son peuple ont été à Tsohan, et ses messagers sont parvenus jusques à Hanès.
⁵ Tous seront rendus honteux par un peuple qui ne leur profitera de rien, ils n'en recevront aucun secours ni aucun avantage, mais il sera leur honte, et leur opprobre.
⁶ Les bêtes seront chargées pour aller au Midi ; ils porteront leurs richesses sur les dos des ânons, et leurs trésors sur la bosse des chameaux, vers le peuple qui ne leur profitera point, au pays de détresse et d'angoisse, d'où viennent le vieux lion, et le lion, la vipère, et le serpent brûlant qui vole.
⁷ Car le secours que les Egyptiens leur donneront ne sera que vanité, et qu'un néant ; c'est pourquoi j'ai crié ceci ; leur force est de se tenir tranquilles.
⁸ Entre [donc] maintenant, et l'écris en leur présence sur une table, et rédige-le par écrit dans un livre,afin que cela demeure pour le temps à venir, à perpétuité, à jamais ;
⁹ Que c'est ici un peuple rebelle, des enfants menteurs, des enfants qui ne veulent point écouter la Loi de l'Eternel ;
¹⁰ Qui ont dit aux Voyants ; ne voyez point ; et à ceux qui voient [des visions] ; ne voyez point de visions de justice, mais dites-nous des choses agréables, voyez [des visions] trompeuses.
¹¹ Retirez-vous du chemin, détournez-vous du sentier, faites cesser le Saint d'Israël de devant nous.
¹² C'est pourquoi ainsi a dit le Saint d'Israël ; parce que vous avez rejeté cette parole, et que vous vous êtes confiés en l'oppression, et en vos moyens obliques, et que vous vous êtes appuyés sur ces choses ;
¹³ A cause de cela cette iniquité vous sera comme la fente d'une muraille qui s'en va tomber, faisant ventre jusques au haut, de laquelle la ruine vient soudainement, et en un moment.
¹⁴ Il la brisera donc comme on brise une bouteille d'un potier de terre qui est cassée, laquelle on n'épargne point, et des pièces de laquelle ne se trouverait pas un têt pour prendre du feu du foyer, ou pour puiser de l'eau d'une fosse.
¹⁵ Car ainsi avait dit le Seigneur, l'Eternel, le Saint d'Israël ; en vous tenant tranquilles et en repos vous serez délivrés, votre force sera en vous tenant en repos et en espérance ; mais vous ne l'avez point agréé.
¹⁶ Et vous avez dit ; non, mais nous nous enfuirons sur des chevaux ; à cause de cela vous vous enfuirez. Et [vous avez dit] ; nous monterons sur [des chevaux] légers ; à cause de cela ceux qui vous poursuivront seront légers.
¹⁷ Mille d'entre vous s'enfuiront à la menace d'un seul ; vous vous enfuirez à la menace de cinq ; jusqu'à ce que vous soyez abandonnés comme un arbre tout ébranché au sommet d'une montagne, et comme un étendard sur un coteau.
¹⁸ Et cependant l'Eternel attend pour vous faire grâce, et ainsi il sera exalté en ayant pitié de vous ; car l'Eternel est le Dieu de jugement ; ô que bienheureux sont tous ceux qui se confient en lui !
¹⁹ Car le peuple demeurera dans Sion, et dans Jérusalem ; tu ne pleureras point ; certes il te fera grâce sitôt qu'il aura ouï ton cri ; sitôt qu'il t'aura ouï, il t'exaucera.
²⁰ Le Seigneur vous donnera du pain de détresse, et de l'eau d'angoisse, mais tes Docteurs ne s'envoleront plus, et tes yeux verront tes Docteurs.
²¹ Et tes oreilles entendront la parole de celui qui sera derrière toi, disant ; c'est ici le chemin, marchez-y ; soit que vous tiriez à droite, soit que vous tiriez à gauche.
²² Et vous tiendrez pour souillés les chapiteaux des images taillées, faites de l'argent d'un chacun de vous, et les ornements faits de l'or fondu d'un chacun de vous ; tu les jetteras au loin, comme un sang impur ; et tu diras ; videz-le dehors.
²³ Et il donnera la pluie sur tes semailles, quand tu auras semé en la terre ; et le grain du revenu de la terre sera abondant, et bien nourri ; en ce jour-là ton bétail paîtra dans une campagne spacieuse.
²⁴ Et les boeufs et les ânes qui labourent la terre mangeront le pur fourrage de ce qui aura été vanné avec la pelle et le van.
²⁵ Et il y aura des ruisseaux d'eaux courantes sur toute haute montagne, et sur tout coteau haut élevé, au jour de la grande tuerie, quand les tours tomberont.
²⁶ Et la lumière de la lune sera comme la lumière du soleil ; et la lumière du soleil sera sept fois aussi grande, comme [si c'était] la lumière de sept jours, au jour que l'Eternel aura bandé la froissure de son peuple, et qu'il aura guéri la blessure de sa plaie.
²⁷ Voici, le Nom de l'Eternel vient de loin, sa colère est ardente, et une pesante charge ; ses lèvres sont remplies d'indignation, et sa langue est comme un feu dévorant.
²⁸ Et son Esprit est comme un torrent débordé, qui atteint jusques au milieu du cou, pour disperser les nations, d'une telle dispersion, qu'elles seront réduites à néant ; et il est [comme] une bride aux mâchoires des peuples, qui les fera aller à travers champs.
²⁹ Vous aurez un cantique tel que celui de la nuit en laquelle on se prépare à célébrer une fête solennelle ; et vous aurez une allégresse de coeur telle qu'a celui qui marche avec la flûte, pour venir en la montagne de l'Eternel, vers le rocher d'Israël.
³⁰ Et l'Eternel fera entendre sa voix, pleine de majesté, et il fera voir où aura assené son bras dans l'indignation de sa colère, avec une flamme de feu dévorant, avec éclat, tempête, et pierres de grêle.
³¹ Car l'Assyrien, qui frappait du bâton, sera effrayé par la voix de l'Eternel.
³² Et partout ou passera le bâton enfoncé dont l'Eternel l'aura assené, et par lequel il aura combattu dans les batailles à bras élevé, [on y entendra des] tambours et des harpes.
³³ Car Topheth est déjà préparée, et même elle est apprêtée pour le Roi ; il l'a faite profonde et large ; son bûcher c'est du feu, et force bois ; le souffle de l'Eternel l'allumant comme un torrent de soufre.

¹ [Væ filii desertores, dicit Dominus, ut faceretis consilium, et non ex me, et ordiremini telam, et non per spiritum meum, ut adderetis peccatum super peccatum ;
² qui ambulatis ut descendatis in Ægyptum, et os meum non interrogastis, sperantes auxilium in fortitudine Pharaonis, et habentes fiduciam in umbra Ægypti !
³ Et erit vobis fortitudo Pharaonis in confusionem, et fiducia umbræ Ægypti in ignominiam.
⁴ Erant enim in Tani principes tui, et nuntii tui usque ad Hanes pervenerunt.
⁵ Omnes confusi sunt super populo qui eis prodesse non potuit : non fuerunt in auxilium et in aliquam utilitatem, sed in confusionem et in opprobrium.]
⁶ Onus jumentorum austri. [In terra tribulationis et angustiæ leæna, et leo ex eis, vipera et regulus volans ; portantes super humeros jumentorum divitias suas, et super gibbum camelorum thesauros suos, ad populum qui eis prodesse non poterit.
⁷ Ægyptus enim frustra et vane auxiliabitur. Ideo clamavi super hoc : Superbia tantum est, quiesce.
⁸ Nunc ergo ingressus, scribe ei super buxum, et in libro diligenter exara illud, et erit in die novissimo in testimonium usque in æternum.
⁹ Populus enim ad iracundiam provocans est : et filii mendaces, filii nolentes audire legem Dei ;
¹⁰ qui dicunt videntibus : Nolite videre, et aspicientibus : Nolite aspicere nobis ea quæ recta sunt ; loquimini nobis placentia : videte nobis errores.
¹¹ Auferte a me viam ; declinate a me semitam ; cesset a facie nostra Sanctus Israël.
¹² Propterea hæc dicit Sanctus Israël : Pro eo quod reprobastis verbum hoc, et sperastis in calumnia et in tumultu, et innixi estis super eo ;
¹³ propterea erit vobis iniquitas hæc sicut interruptio cadens, et requisita in muro excelso, quoniam subito, dum non speratur, veniet contritio ejus.
¹⁴ Et comminuetur sicut conteritur lagena figuli contritione pervalida, et non invenietur de fragmentis ejus testa in qua portetur igniculus de incendio, aut hauriatur parum aquæ de fovea.
¹⁵ Quia hæc dicit Dominus Deus, Sanctus Israël : Si revertamini et quiescatis, salvi eritis ; in silentio et in spe erit fortitudo vestra. Et noluistis,
¹⁶ et dixistis : Nequaquam, sed ad equos fugiemus : ideo fugietis ; et : Super veloces ascendemus : ideo velociores erunt qui persequentur vos.
¹⁷ Mille homines a facie terroris unius ; et a facie terroris quinque fugietis, donec relinquamini quasi malus navis in vertice montis, et quasi signum super collem.
¹⁸ Propterea exspectat Dominus ut misereatur vestri ; et ideo exaltabitur parcens vobis, quia Deus judicii Dominus : beati omnes qui exspectant eum !
¹⁹ Populus enim Sion habitabit in Jerusalem : plorans nequaquam plorabis : miserans miserebitur tui, ad vocem clamoris tui : statim ut audierit, respondebit tibi.
²⁰ Et dabit vobis Dominus panem arctum, et aquam brevem ; et non faciet avolare a te ultra doctorem tuum ; et erunt oculi tui videntes præceptorem tuum.
²¹ Et aures tuæ audient verbum post tergum monentis : Hæc est via ; ambulate in ea, et non declinetis neque ad dexteram, neque ad sinistram.
²² Et contaminabis laminas sculptilium argenti tui, et vestimentum conflatilis auri tui, et disperges ea sicut immunditiam menstruatæ. Egredere, dices ei.
²³ Et dabitur pluvia semini tuo, ubicumque seminaveris in terra, et panis frugum terræ erit uberrimus et pinguis ; pascetur in possessione tua in die illo agnus spatiose,
²⁴ et tauri tui, et pulli asinorum, qui operantur terram, commistum migma comedent sicut in area ventilatum est.
²⁵ Et erunt super omnem montem excelsum, et super omnem collem elevatum, rivi currentium aquarum, in die interfectionis multorum, cum ceciderint turres :
²⁶ et erit lux lunæ sicut lux solis, et lux solis erit septempliciter sicut lux septem dierum, in die qua alligaverit Dominus vulnus populi sui, et percussuram plagæ ejus sanaverit.
²⁷ Ecce nomen Domini venit de longinquo, ardens furor ejus, et gravis ad portandum ; labia ejus repleta sunt indignatione, et lingua ejus quasi ignis devorans.
²⁸ Spiritus ejus velut torrens inundans usque ad medium colli, ad perdendas gentes in nihilum, et frenum erroris quod erat in maxillis populorum.
²⁹ Canticum erit vobis sicut nox sanctificatæ solemnitatis, et lætitia cordis sicut qui pergit cum tibia, ut intret in montem Domini ad Fortem Israël.
³⁰ Et auditam faciet Dominus gloriam vocis suæ, et terrorem brachii sui ostendet in comminatione furoris, et flamma ignis devorantis : allidet in turbine, et in lapide grandinis.
³¹ A voce enim Domini pavebit Assur virga percussus.
³² Et erit transitus virgæ fundatus, quam requiescere faciet Dominus super eum in tympanis et citharis ; et in bellis præcipuis expugnabit eos.
³³ Præparata est enim ab heri Topheth, a rege præparata, profunda, et dilatata. Nutrimenta ejus, ignis et ligna multa ; flatus Domini sicut torrens sulphuris succendens eam.]
