¹ Et la parole de l'Eternel me fut adressée en ces mots :
² Fils d'homme, il y a eu deux femmes, filles d'une même mère.
³ Elles se prostituèrent en Egypte. Dans leur jeunesse elles se sont prostituées ; là on a pressé leurs mamelles ; là on a porté la main sur leur sein virginal.
⁴ Voici leurs noms : Ohola, la plus grande, et Oholiba, sa soeur. Elles furent à moi et enfantèrent des fils et des filles ; et voici leurs noms : Ohola, c'est Samarie, et Oholiba, c'est Jérusalem.
⁵ Et Ohola me fut infidèle ; elle aima avec passion ses amants, les Assyriens ses voisins,
⁶ vêtus de pourpre, gouverneurs et chefs, tous beaux jeunes hommes, cavaliers bien montés,
⁷ et elle leur prostitua ses amours. Ils étaient tous l'élite des fils de l'Assyrie ; et avec tous ceux qu'elle aimait avec passion, elle se souilla de toutes leurs infamies.
⁸ Et elle n'avait point abandonné ses prostitutions de l'Egypte, où on l'avait déshonorée dans sa jeunesse, où l'on avait porté la main sur son sein virginal, et où on s'était livré avec elle à des débordements d'impudicité.
⁹ C'est pourquoi je l'ai livrée à ses amants, aux fils de l'Assyrie qu'elle avait aimés avec passion ;
¹⁰ ils ont découvert sa nudité ; ils ont pris ses fils et ses filles ; ils l'ont égorgée avec l'épée, et elle devint célèbre chez les femmes : justice en avait été faite.
¹¹ Et sa soeur Oholiba l'a vu, et elle s'est corrompue plus qu'elle dans ses amours, et ses prostitutions ont dépassé les prostitutions de sa soeur.
¹² Elle a aimé avec passion les fils d'Assur, gouverneurs et chefs, ses voisins, élégamment vêtus, cavaliers bien montés, tous beaux jeunes hommes ;
¹³ et je vis qu'elle se souillait ; toutes deux suivaient le même train.
¹⁴ Et elle ajouta encore à ses prostitutions. Elle vit des hommes dessinés sur le mur, des images de Chaldéens peints au vermillon,
¹⁵ la ceinture aux reins, la tête couverte d'amples turbans, tous paraissant de grands seigneurs ; c'étaient des portraits des fils de Babel ; la Chaldée était leur patrie.
¹⁶ Elle se passionna d'eux à cette vue, et envoya des messagers vers eux en Chaldée ;
¹⁷ et les fils de Babel vinrent vers elle au lit des amours et la souillèrent par leurs prostitutions, et elle se souilla avec eux, puis son âme se détacha d'eux.
¹⁸ Et elle fit voir à découvert ses prostitutions ; elle découvrit sa nudité, et mon âme se détacha d'elle comme mon âme s'était détachée de sa soeur.
¹⁹ Elle a multiplié ses prostitutions, se rappelant les jours de sa jeunesse où elle s'était prostituée au pays d'Egypte.
²⁰ Elle s'est passionnée de ces impudiques ayant des membres d'âne et ardents comme le sont des étalons.
²¹ Tu as voulu revenir aux turpitudes de ta jeunesse, quand les Egyptiens pressaient tes mamelles à cause de ton sein virginal.
²² C'est pourquoi, Oholiba, ainsi parle le Seigneur l'Eternel : Je vais exciter contre toi tes amants, ceux dont ton âme s'est détachée, et je les ferai venir contre toi de toute part,
²³ les fils de Babel et tous les Chaldéens, princes, riches et grands, et tous les fils d'Assur avec eux, beaux jeunes hommes, tous gouverneurs et chefs, dignitaires et conseillers, tous montés sur des chevaux ;
²⁴ et contre toi s'avancent armes, chevaux et roues, une foule de peuples ; boucliers, écus et casques se rangent contre toi ; je leur remets le jugement, et ils te jugeront selon leurs lois.
²⁵ Je donnerai cours à ma jalousie contre toi, et ils te traiteront avec fureur ; ils te couperont le nez et les oreilles, et ce qui restera de toi tombera par l'épée ; ils prendront tes fils et tes filles, et ce qui restera de toi sera consumé par le feu.
²⁶ Ils te dépouilleront de tes vêtements et prendront tes objets de parure.
²⁷ Et je mettrai un terme à ton crime et à tes débauches du pays d'Egypte, et tu ne lèveras plus les yeux vers eux et tu ne te souviendras plus de l'Egypte.
²⁸ Car ainsi dit le Seigneur l'Eternel : Je vais te livrer à ceux que tu hais, à ceux dont ton âme s'est détachée.
²⁹ Ils te traiteront avec haine ; ils emporteront tout ce que tu as gagné et te laisseront toute nue, et la honte de ton impudicité, de ton crime et de tes prostitutions sera découverte ;
³⁰ on te fera ces choses-là, parce que tu t'es prostituée aux nations en te souillant avec leurs idoles.
³¹ Tu as suivi la voie de ta soeur ; c'est pourquoi je mettrai sa coupe en ta main.
³² Ainsi parle le Seigneur l'Eternel : Tu boiras la coupe de ta soeur, coupe large et profonde, qui donnera à rire et à se moquer [de toi] ; tant sa capacité est grande.
³³ Tu seras prise d'ivresse et de tristesse ; c'est une coupe de morne stupeur que la coupe de ta soeur Samarie.
³⁴ Tu la boiras et la videras, et tu en mordras les morceaux et t'en déchireras le sein, car moi j'ai parlé, dit le Seigneur l'Eternel.
³⁵ C'est pourquoi, ainsi parle le Seigneur l'Eternel : Parce que tu m'as oublié et que tu m'as jeté derrière ton dos, toi aussi porte la peine de ton crime et de tes prostitutions !
³⁶ Puis l'Eternel me dit : Fils d'homme, jugeras-tu Ohola et Oholiba ? Déclare-leur leurs abominations.
³⁷ Car elles ont été adultères et il y a du sang dans leurs mains. Elles ont commis adultère avec leurs idoles, et même leurs fils qu'elles m'ont enfantés, elles les leur ont servis à manger.
³⁸ Voici encore ce qu'elles m'ont fait : elles ont souillé mon sanctuaire en ce jour-là et ont profané mes sabbats.
³⁹ Et quand elles immolaient leurs fils à leurs idoles, elles sont entrées dans mon sanctuaire en ce jour-là pour le profaner, et voilà ce qu'elles ont fait au milieu de ma maison.
⁴⁰ Et même elles se sont adressées à des hommes venant de loin ; elles leur ont envoyé un messager, et ils sont venus. Pour eux tu t'es lavée, tu t'es fardé les yeux, tu t'es ornée de tes parures ;
⁴¹ et tu t'es assise sur un lit d'apparat ; devant ce lit une table était dressée, et tu y as posé mon encens et mon huile.
⁴² On y entendait le bruit d'une foule joyeuse ; avec les gens venus des grands amas d'hommes, ont été conviés les buveurs du désert qui ont mis des bracelets aux mains [des deux soeurs] et des couronnes magnifiques sur leurs têtes.
⁴³ Et je dis à cette femme usée dans les adultères : Va-t-elle maintenant continuer ses prostitutions... elle aussi ?
⁴⁴ On va vers elle comme on va vers une prostituée. C'est ainsi qu'on est allé vers Ohola et Oholiba, ces femmes criminelles.
⁴⁵ Mais des hommes justes les condamneront à la peine des femmes adultères et à la peine de celles qui répandent le sang ; car elles sont adultères et il y a du sang dans leurs mains.
⁴⁶ Car ainsi parle le Seigneur l'Eternel : Fais monter contre elles une assemblée, et qu'on les livre à la terreur et au pillage !
⁴⁷ Et que l'assemblée les assomme de pierres et les taille en pièces avec l'épée. Qu'on tue leurs fils et leurs filles et qu'on brûle leurs maisons !
⁴⁸ Et je mettrai un terme au crime dans le pays, et toutes les femmes en recevront instruction et ne commettront point des crimes pareils.
⁴⁹ Et on fera retomber votre crime sur vous, et vous porterez la peine de votre idolâtrie, et vous saurez que moi je suis le Seigneur l'Eternel.

¹ The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
² Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother:
³ And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.
⁴ And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus were their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.
⁵ And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,
⁶ Which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses.
⁷ Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.
⁸ Neither left she her whoredoms brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her.
⁹ Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted.
¹⁰ These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her.
¹¹ And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in her whoredoms.
¹² She doted upon the Assyrians her neighbours, captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men.
¹³ Then I saw that she was defiled, that they took both one way,
¹⁴ And that she increased her whoredoms: for when she saw men pourtrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans pourtrayed with vermilion,
¹⁵ Girded with girdles upon their loins, exceeding in dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, the land of their nativity:
¹⁶ And as soon as she saw them with her eyes, she doted upon them, and sent messengers unto them into Chaldea.
¹⁷ And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them.
¹⁸ So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister.
¹⁹ Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.
²⁰ For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.
²¹ Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth.
²² Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;
²³ The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses.
²⁴ And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments.
²⁵ And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.
²⁶ They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels.
²⁷ Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more.
²⁸ For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated:
²⁹ And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.
³⁰ I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols.
³¹ Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand.
³² Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister's cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much.
³³ Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.
³⁴ Thou shalt even drink it and suck it out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD.
³⁵ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.
³⁶ The LORD said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations;
³⁷ That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.
³⁸ Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths.
³⁹ For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house.
⁴⁰ And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments,
⁴¹ And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil.
⁴² And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wilderness, which put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns upon their heads.
⁴³ Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them?
⁴⁴ Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah, the lewd women.
⁴⁵ And the righteous men, they shall judge them after the manner of adulteresses, and after the manner of women that shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands.
⁴⁶ For thus saith the Lord GOD; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and spoiled.
⁴⁷ And the company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall slay their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire.
⁴⁸ Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness.
⁴⁹ And they shall recompense your lewdness upon you, and ye shall bear the sins of your idols: and ye shall know that I am the Lord GOD.

² [Fili hominis, duæ mulieres filiæ matris unius fuerunt :
³ et fornicatæ sunt in Ægypto, in adolescentia sua fornicatæ sunt : ibi subacta sunt ubera earum, et fractæ sunt mammæ pubertatis earum.
⁴ Nomina autem earum, Oolla major, et Ooliba soror ejus minor : et habui eas, et pepererunt filios et filias. Porro earum nomina, Samaria Oolla, et Jerusalem Ooliba.
⁵ Fornicata est igitur super me Oolla, et insanivit in amatores suos, in Assyrios propinquantes,
⁶ vestitos hyacintho, principes et magistratus, juvenes cupidinis, universos equites, ascensores equorum.
⁷ Et dedit fornicationes suas super eos electos, filios Assyriorum universos : et in omnibus in quos insanivit, in immunditiis eorum polluta est.
⁸ Insuper et fornicationes suas, quas habuerat in Ægypto, non reliquit : nam et illi dormierunt cum ea in adolescentia ejus, et illi confregerunt ubera pubertatis ejus, et effuderunt fornicationem suam super eam.
⁹ Propterea tradidi eam in manus amatorum suorum, in manus filiorum Assur, super quorum insanivit libidine.

¹³ Et vidi quod polluta esset via una ambarum.

¹⁸ Denudavit quoque fornicationes suas, et discooperuit ignominiam suam : et recessit anima mea ab ea, sicut recesserat anima mea a sorore ejus :
¹⁹ multiplicavit enim fornicationes suas, recordans dies adolescentiæ suæ, quibus fornicata est in terra Ægypti.
²⁰ Et insanivit libidine super concubitum eorum, quorum carnes sunt ut carnes asinorum, et sicut fluxus equorum fluxus eorum.
²¹ Et visitasti scelus adolescentiæ tuæ, quando subacta sunt in Ægypto ubera tua, et confractæ sunt mammæ pubertatis tuæ.]
²² [Propterea, Ooliba, hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Ecce ego suscitabo omnes amatores tuos contra te, de quibus satiata est anima tua, et congregabo eos adversum te in circuitu :
²³ filios Babylonis, et universos Chaldæos, nobiles, tyrannosque, et principes, omnes filios Assyriorum, juvenes forma egregia, duces et magistratus universos, principes principum, et nominatos ascensores equorum :
²⁴ et venient super te instructi curru et rota, multitudo populorum : lorica, et clypeo, et galea armabuntur contra te undique : et dabo coram eis judicium, et judicabunt te judiciis suis.
²⁵ Et ponam zelum meum in te, quem exercent tecum in furore : nasum tuum et aures tuas præcident, et quæ remanserint, gladio concident. Ipsi filios tuos et filias tuas capient, et novissimum tuum devorabitur igni :
²⁶ et denudabunt te vestimentis tuis, et tollent vasa gloriæ tuæ.
²⁷ Et requiescere faciam scelus tuum de te, et fornicationem tuam de terra Ægypti : nec levabis oculos tuos ad eos, et Ægypti non recordaberis amplius.]

²⁹ Et agent tecum in odio, et tollent omnes labores tuos, et dimittent te nudam et ignominia plenam : et revelabitur ignominia fornicationum tuarum, scelus tuum, et fornicationes tuæ.
³⁰ Fecerunt hæc tibi, quia fornicata es post gentes inter quas polluta es in idolis earum.
³¹ In via sororis tuæ ambulasti, et dabo calicem ejus in manu tua.
³² Hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Calicem sororis tuæ bibes profundum et latum : eris in derisum et in subsannationem quæ est capacissima.
³³ Ebrietate et dolore repleberis : calice mœroris et tristitiæ, calice sororis tuæ Samariæ.
³⁴ Et bibes illum, et epotabis usque ad fæces : et fragmenta ejus devorabis, et ubera tua lacerabis, quia ego locutus sum, ait Dominus Deus.
³⁵ Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus : Quia oblita es mei, et projecisti me post corpus tuum, tu quoque porta scelus tuum et fornicationes tuas.]
³⁶ Et ait Dominus ad me, dicens : [Fili hominis, numquid judicas Oollam et Oolibam, et annuntias eis scelera earum ?
³⁷ Quia adulteratæ sunt, et sanguis in manibus earum, et cum idolis suis fornicatæ sunt : insuper et filios suos quos genuerunt mihi, obtulerunt eis ad devorandum.
³⁸ Sed et hoc fecerunt mihi : polluerunt sanctuarium meum in die illa, et sabbata mea profanaverunt.
³⁹ Cumque immolarent filios suos idolis suis, et ingrederentur sanctuarium meum in die illa ut polluerent illud, etiam hæc fecerunt in medio domus meæ.
⁴⁰ Miserunt ad viros venientes de longe, ad quos nuntium miserant : itaque ecce venerunt quibus te lavisti, et circumlinisti stibio oculos tuos, et ornata es mundo muliebri.
⁴¹ Sedisti in lecto pulcherrimo, et mensa ornata est ante te : thymiama meum et unguentum meum posuisti super eam.
⁴² Et vox multitudinis exsultantis erat in ea : et in viris, qui de multitudine hominum adducebantur, et veniebant de deserto, posuerunt armillas in manibus eorum, et coronas speciosas in capitibus eorum.
⁴³ Et dixi ei, quæ attrita est in adulteriis : Nunc fornicabitur in fornicatione sua etiam hæc.
⁴⁴ Et ingressi sunt ad eam quasi ad mulierem meretricem : sic ingrediebantur ad Oollam et Oolibam, mulieres nefarias.
⁴⁵ Viri ergo justi sunt : hi judicabunt eas judicio adulterarum, et judicio effundentium sanguinem : quia adulteræ sunt, et sanguis in manibus earum.
⁴⁶ Hæc enim dicit Dominus Deus : Adduc ad eas multitudinem, et trade eas in tumultum et in rapinam.
⁴⁷ Et lapidentur lapidibus populorum, et confodiantur gladiis eorum : filios et filias earum interficient, et domos earum igne succendent.
⁴⁸ Et auferam scelus de terra, et discent omnes mulieres ne faciant secundum scelus earum.
⁴⁹ Et dabunt scelus vestrum super vos, et peccata idolorum vestrorum portabitis : et scietis quia ego Dominus Deus.]
