¹ Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in the midst of them that rise up against me, a destroying wind;
² And will send unto Babylon fanners, that shall fan her, and shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
³ Against him that bendeth let the archer bend his bow, and against him that lifteth himself up in his brigandine: and spare ye not her young men; destroy ye utterly all her host.
⁴ Thus the slain shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and they that are thrust through in her streets.
⁵ For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
⁶ Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every man his soul: be not cut off in her iniquity; for this is the time of the LORD's vengeance; he will render unto her a recompence.
⁷ Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD's hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad.
⁸ Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: howl for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
⁹ We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country: for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.
¹⁰ The LORD hath brought forth our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of the LORD our God.
¹¹ Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the LORD hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the LORD, the vengeance of his temple.
¹² Set up the standard upon the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set up the watchmen, prepare the ambushes: for the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon.
¹³ O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.
¹⁴ The LORD of hosts hath sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill thee with men, as with caterpillers; and they shall lift up a shout against thee.
¹⁵ He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heaven by his understanding.
¹⁶ When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens; and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth: he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures.
¹⁷ Every man is brutish by his knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
¹⁸ They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
¹⁹ The portion of Jacob is not like them; for he is the former of all things: and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: the LORD of hosts is his name.
²⁰ Thou art my battle axe and weapons of war: for with thee will I break in pieces the nations, and with thee will I destroy kingdoms;
²¹ And with thee will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; and with thee will I break in pieces the chariot and his rider;
²² With thee also will I break in pieces man and woman; and with thee will I break in pieces old and young; and with thee will I break in pieces the young man and the maid;
²³ I will also break in pieces with thee the shepherd and his flock; and with thee will I break in pieces the husbandman and his yoke of oxen; and with thee will I break in pieces captains and rulers.
²⁴ And I will render unto Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, saith the LORD.
²⁵ Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.
²⁶ And they shall not take of thee a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but thou shalt be desolate for ever, saith the LORD.
²⁷ Set ye up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashchenaz; appoint a captain against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough caterpillers.
²⁸ Prepare against her the nations with the kings of the Medes, the captains thereof, and all the rulers thereof, and all the land of his dominion.
²⁹ And the land shall tremble and sorrow: for every purpose of the LORD shall be performed against Babylon, to make the land of Babylon a desolation without an inhabitant.
³⁰ The mighty men of Babylon have forborn to fight, they have remained in their holds: their might hath failed; they became as women: they have burned her dwellingplaces; her bars are broken.
³¹ One post shall run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to shew the king of Babylon that his city is taken at one end,
³² And that the passages are stopped, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are affrighted.
³³ For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; The daughter of Babylon is like a threshingfloor, it is time to thresh her: yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come.
³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon hath devoured me, he hath crushed me, he hath made me an empty vessel, he hath swallowed me up like a dragon, he hath filled his belly with my delicates, he hath cast me out.
³⁵ The violence done to me and to my flesh be upon Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say.
³⁶ Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will plead thy cause, and take vengeance for thee; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry.
³⁷ And Babylon shall become heaps, a dwellingplace for dragons, an astonishment, and an hissing, without an inhabitant.
³⁸ They shall roar together like lions: they shall yell as lions' whelps.
³⁹ In their heat I will make their feasts, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the LORD.
⁴⁰ I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with he goats.
⁴¹ How is Sheshach taken! and how is the praise of the whole earth surprised! how is Babylon become an astonishment among the nations!
⁴² The sea is come up upon Babylon: she is covered with the multitude of the waves thereof.
⁴³ Her cities are a desolation, a dry land, and a wilderness, a land wherein no man dwelleth, neither doth any son of man pass thereby.
⁴⁴ And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he hath swallowed up: and the nations shall not flow together any more unto him: yea, the wall of Babylon shall fall.
⁴⁵ My people, go ye out of the midst of her, and deliver ye every man his soul from the fierce anger of the LORD.
⁴⁶ And lest your heart faint, and ye fear for the rumour that shall be heard in the land; a rumour shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumour, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.
⁴⁷ Therefore, behold, the days come, that I will do judgment upon the graven images of Babylon: and her whole land shall be confounded, and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her.
⁴⁸ Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.
⁴⁹ As Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth.
⁵⁰ Ye that have escaped the sword, go away, stand not still: remember the LORD afar off, and let Jerusalem come into your mind.
⁵¹ We are confounded, because we have heard reproach: shame hath covered our faces: for strangers are come into the sanctuaries of the LORD's house.
⁵² Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.
⁵³ Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the LORD.
⁵⁴ A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans:
⁵⁵ Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:
⁵⁶ Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite.
⁵⁷ And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.
⁵⁸ Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary.
⁵⁹ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was a quiet prince.
⁶⁰ So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
⁶¹ And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;
⁶² Then shalt thou say, O LORD, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.
⁶³ And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:
⁶⁴ And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

¹ Ainsi parle l'Eternel:Voici, je fais lever contre Babylone, Et contre les habitants de la Chaldée, Un vent destructeur.
² J'envoie contre Babylone des vanneurs qui la vanneront, Qui videront son pays; Ils fondront de toutes parts sur elle, Au jour du malheur.
³ Qu'on tende l'arc contre celui qui tend son arc, Contre celui qui est fier dans sa cuirasse! N'épargnez pas ses jeunes hommes! Exterminez toute son armée!
⁴ Qu'ils tombent blessés à mort dans le pays des Chaldéens, Percés de coups dans les rues de Babylone!
⁵ Car Israël et Juda ne sont point abandonnés de leur Dieu, De l'Eternel des armées, Et le pays des Chaldéens est rempli de crimes Contre le Saint d'Israël.
⁶ Fuyez de Babylone, et que chacun sauve sa vie, De peur que vous ne périssiez dans sa ruine! Car c'est un temps de vengeance pour l'Eternel; Il va lui rendre selon ses œuvres.
⁷ Babylone était dans la main de l'Eternel une coupe d'or, Qui enivrait toute la terre; Les nations ont bu de son vin: C'est pourquoi les nations ont été comme en délire.
⁸ Soudain Babylone tombe, elle est brisée! Gémissez sur elle, prenez du baume pour sa plaie: Peut-être guérira-t-elle.
⁹ Nous avons voulu guérir Babylone, mais elle n'a pas guéri. Abandonnons-la, et que chacun aille dans son pays; Car son châtiment atteint jusqu'aux cieux, Et s'élève jusqu'aux nues.
¹⁰ L'Eternel manifeste la justice de notre cause; Venez, et racontons dans Sion L'œuvre de l'Eternel, notre Dieu.
¹¹ Aiguisez les flèches, saisissez les boucliers! L'Eternel a excité l'esprit des rois de Médie, Parce qu'il veut détruire Babylone; Car c'est la vengeance de l'Eternel, La vengeance de son temple.
¹² Elevez une bannière contre les murs de Babylone! Fortifiez les postes, placez des gardes, dressez des embuscades! Car l'Eternel a pris une résolution, Et il exécute ce qu'il a prononcé contre les habitants de Babylone.
¹³ Toi qui habites près des grandes eaux, Et qui as d'immenses trésors, Ta fin est venue, ta cupidité est à son terme!
¹⁴ L'Eternel des armées l'a juré par lui-même: Oui, je te remplirai d'hommes comme de sauterelles, Et ils pousseront contre toi des cris de guerre.
¹⁵ Il a créé la terre par sa puissance, Il a fondé le monde par sa sagesse, Il a étendu les cieux par son intelligence.
¹⁶ A sa voix, les eaux mugissent dans les cieux, Il fait monter les nuages des extrémités de la terre, Il produit les éclairs et la pluie, Il tire le vent de ses trésors.
¹⁷ Tout homme devient stupide par sa science, Tout orfèvre est honteux de son image taillée; Car ses idoles ne sont que mensonge, Il n'y a point en elles de souffle.
¹⁸ Elles sont une chose de néant, une œuvre de tromperie; Elles périront, quand viendra le châtiment.
¹⁹ Celui qui est la part de Jacob n'est pas comme elles; Car c'est lui qui a tout formé, Et Israël est la tribu de son héritage. L'Eternel des armées est son nom.
²⁰ Tu as été pour moi un marteau, un instrument de guerre. J'ai brisé par toi des nations, Par toi j'ai détruit des royaumes.
²¹ Par toi j'ai brisé le cheval et son cavalier; Par toi j'ai brisé le char et celui qui était dessus.
²² Par toi j'ai brisé l'homme et la femme; Par toi j'ai brisé le vieillard et l'enfant; Par toi j'ai brisé le jeune homme et la jeune fille.
²³ Par toi j'ai brisé le berger et son troupeau; Par toi j'ai brisé le laboureur et ses bœufs; Par toi j'ai brisé les gouverneurs et les chefs.
²⁴ Je rendrai à Babylone et à tous les habitants de la Chaldée Tout le mal qu'ils ont fait à Sion sous vos yeux, Dit l'Eternel.
²⁵ Voici, j'en veux à toi, montagne de destruction, dit l'Eternel, A toi qui détruisais toute la terre! J'étendrai ma main sur toi, Je te roulerai du haut des rochers, Et je ferai de toi une montagne embrasée.
²⁶ On ne tirera de toi ni pierres angulaires, ni pierres pour fondements; Car tu seras à jamais une ruine, dit l'Eternel…
²⁷ Elevez une bannière dans le pays! Sonnez de la trompette parmi les nations! Préparez les nations contre elle, Appelez contre elle les royaumes d'Ararat, de Minni et d'Aschkenaz! Etablissez contre elle des chefs! Faites avancer des chevaux comme des sauterelles hérissées!
²⁸ Préparez contre elle les nations, les rois de Médie, Ses gouverneurs et tous ses chefs, Et tout le pays sous leur domination!
²⁹ La terre s'ébranle, elle tremble; Car le dessein de l'Eternel contre Babylone s'accomplit; Il va faire du pays de Babylone un désert sans habitants.
³⁰ Les guerriers de Babylone cessent de combattre, Ils se tiennent dans les forteresses; Leur force est épuisée, ils sont comme des femmes. On met le feu aux habitations, On brise les barres.
³¹ Les courriers se rencontrent, Les messagers se croisent, Pour annoncer au roi de Babylone Que sa ville est prise par tous les côtés,
³² Que les passages sont envahis, Les marais embrasés par le feu, Et les hommes de guerre consternés.
³³ Car ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: La fille de Babylone est comme une aire dans le temps où on la foule; Encore un instant, et le moment de la moisson sera venu pour elle.
³⁴ Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, m'a dévorée, m'a détruite; Il a fait de moi un vase vide; Tel un dragon, il m'a engloutie, Il a rempli son ventre de ce que j'avais de précieux; Il m'a chassée.
³⁵ Que la violence envers moi et ma chair déchirée retombent sur Babylone! Dit l'habitante de Sion. Que mon sang retombe sur les habitants de la Chaldée! Dit Jérusalem.
³⁶ C'est pourquoi ainsi parle l'Eternel: Voici, je défendrai ta cause, Je te vengerai! Je mettrai à sec la mer de Babylone, Et je ferai tarir sa source.
³⁷ Babylone sera un monceau de ruines, un repaire de chacals, Un objet de désolation et de moquerie; Il n'y aura plus d'habitants.
³⁸ Ils rugiront ensemble comme des lions, Ils pousseront des cris comme des lionceaux.
³⁹ Quand ils seront échauffés, je les ferai boire, Et je les enivrerai, pour qu'ils se livrent à la gaîté, Puis s'endorment d'un sommeil perpétuel, et ne se réveillent plus, Dit l'Eternel.
⁴⁰ Je les ferai descendre comme des agneaux à la tuerie, Comme des béliers et des boucs.
⁴¹ Eh quoi! Schéschac est prise! Celle dont la gloire remplissait toute la terre est conquise! Eh quoi! Babylone est détruite au milieu des nations!
⁴² La mer est montée sur Babylone: Babylone a été couverte par la multitude de ses flots.
⁴³ Ses villes sont ravagées, La terre est aride et déserte; C'est un pays où personne n'habite, Où ne passe aucun homme.
⁴⁴ Je châtierai Bel à Babylone, J'arracherai de sa bouche ce qu'il a englouti, Et les nations n'afflueront plus vers lui. La muraille même de Babylone est tombée!
⁴⁵ Sortez du milieu d'elle, mon peuple, Et que chacun sauve sa vie, En échappant à la colère ardente de l'Eternel!
⁴⁶ Que votre cœur ne se trouble point, et ne vous effrayez pas Des bruits qui se répandront dans le pays; Car cette année surviendra un bruit, Et l'année suivante un autre bruit, La violence régnera dans le pays, Et un dominateur s'élèvera contre un autre dominateur.
⁴⁷ C'est pourquoi voici, les jours viennent Où je châtierai les idoles de Babylone, Et tout son pays sera couvert de honte; Tous ses morts tomberont au milieu d'elle.
⁴⁸ Sur Babylone retentiront les cris de joie des cieux et de la terre, Et de tout ce qu'ils renferment; Car du septentrion les dévastateurs fondront sur elle, Dit l'Eternel.
⁴⁹ Babylone aussi tombera, ô morts d'Israël, Comme elle a fait tomber les morts de tout le pays.
⁵⁰ Vous qui avez échappé au glaive, partez, ne tardez pas! De la terre lointaine, pensez à l'Eternel, Et que Jérusalem soit présente à vos cœurs!
⁵¹ Nous étions confus, quand nous entendions l'insulte; La honte couvrait nos visages, Quand des étrangers sont venus Dans le sanctuaire de la maison de l'Eternel.
⁵² C'est pourquoi voici, les jours viennent, dit l'Eternel, Où je châtierai ses idoles; Et dans tout son pays les blessés gémiront.
⁵³ Quand Babylone s'élèverait jusqu'aux cieux, Quand elle rendrait inaccessibles ses hautes forteresses, J'enverrai contre elle les dévastateurs, dit l'Eternel…
⁵⁴ Des cris s'échappent de Babylone, Et le désastre est grand dans le pays des Chaldéens.
⁵⁵ Car l'Eternel ravage Babylone, Il en fait cesser les cris retentissants; Les flots des dévastateurs mugissent comme de grandes eaux, Dont le bruit tumultueux se fait entendre.
⁵⁶ Oui, le dévastateur fond sur elle, sur Babylone; Les guerriers de Babylone sont pris, Leurs arcs sont brisés. Car l'Eternel est un Dieu qui rend à chacun selon ses œuvres, Qui paie à chacun son salaire.
⁵⁷ J'enivrerai ses princes et ses sages, Ses gouverneurs, ses chefs et ses guerriers; Ils s'endormiront d'un sommeil perpétuel, et ne se réveilleront plus, Dit le roi, dont l'Eternel des armées est le nom.
⁵⁸ Ainsi parle l'Eternel des armées: Les larges murailles de Babylone seront renversées, Ses hautes portes seront brûlées par le feu; Ainsi les peuples auront travaillé en vain, Les nations se seront fatiguées pour le feu.
⁵⁹ Ordre donné par Jérémie, le prophète, à Seraja, fils de Nérija, fils de Machséja, lorsqu'il se rendit à Babylone avec Sédécias, roi de Juda, la quatrième année du règne de Sédécias. Or, Seraja était premier chambellan.
⁶⁰ Jérémie écrivit dans un livre tous les malheurs qui devaient arriver à Babylone, toutes ces paroles qui sont écrites sur Babylone.
⁶¹ Jérémie dit à Seraja: Lorsque tu seras arrivé à Babylone, tu auras soin de lire toutes ces paroles,
⁶² et tu diras: Eternel, c'est toi qui as déclaré que ce lieu serait détruit, et qu'il ne serait plus habité ni par les hommes ni par les bêtes, mais qu'il deviendrait un désert pour toujours.
⁶³ Et quand tu auras achevé la lecture de ce livre, tu y attacheras une pierre, et tu le jetteras dans l'Euphrate,
⁶⁴ et tu diras: Ainsi Babylone sera submergée, elle ne se relèvera pas des malheurs que j'amènerai sur elle; ils tomberont épuisés.Jusqu'ici sont les paroles de Jérémie.

⁷ Calix aureus Babylon in manu Domini, inebrians omnem terram : de vino ejus biberunt gentes, et ideo commotæ sunt.
⁸ Subito cecidit Babylon, et contrita est. Ululate super eam : tollite resinam ad dolorem ejus, si forte sanetur.
⁹ Curavimus Babylonem, et non est sanata : derelinquamus eam, et eamus unusquisque in terram suam : quoniam pervenit usque ad cælos judicium ejus, et elevatum est usque ad nubes.

¹² Super muros Babylonis levate signum, augete custodiam, levate custodes, præparate insidias : quia cogitavit Dominus, et fecit quæcumque locutus est contra habitatores Babylonis.
¹³ Quæ habitas super aquas multas, locuples in thesauris : venit finis tuus, pedalis præcisionis tuæ.
¹⁴ Juravit Dominus exercituum per animam suam : Quoniam replebo te hominibus quasi brucho, et super te celeuma cantabitur.

²⁰ Collidis tu mihi vasa belli : et ego collidam in te gentes, et disperdam in te regna :

²⁶ et non tollent de te lapidem in angulum, et lapidem in fundamenta : sed perditus in æternum eris, ait Dominus.
²⁷ Levate signum in terra, clangite buccina in gentibus, sanctificate super eam gentes, annuntiate contra illam regibus Ararat, Menni, et Ascenez : numerate contra eam Taphsar, adducite equum quasi bruchum aculeatum.
²⁸ Sanctificate contra eam gentes, reges Mediæ, duces ejus, et universos magistratus ejus, cunctamque terram potestatis ejus.
²⁹ Et commovebitur terra et conturbabitur, quia evigilabit contra Babylonem cogitatio Domini, ut ponat terram Babylonis desertam et inhabitabilem.
³⁰ Cessaverunt fortes Babylonis a prælio ; habitaverunt in præsidiis : devoratum est robur eorum, et facti sunt quasi mulieres : incensa sunt tabernacula ejus, contriti sunt vectes ejus.
³¹ Currens obviam currenti veniet, et nuntius obvius nuntianti, ut annuntiet regi Babylonis quia capta est civitas ejus a summo usque ad summum.
³² Et vada præoccupata sunt, et paludes incensæ sunt igni, et viri bellatores conturbati sunt.
³³ Quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israël : Filia Babylonis quasi area, tempus trituræ ejus : adhuc modicum, et veniet tempus messionis ejus.
³⁴ Comedit me, devoravit me Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis : reddidit me quasi vas inane, absorbuit me quasi draco, replevit ventrem suum teneritudine mea, et ejecit me.
³⁵ Iniquitas adversum me et caro mea super Babylonem, dicit habitatio Sion : et sanguis meus super habitatores Chaldææ, dicit Jerusalem.
³⁶ Propterea hæc dicit Dominus : Ecce ego judicabo causam tuam, et ulciscar ultionem tuam : et desertum faciam mare ejus, et siccabo venam ejus.
³⁷ Et erit Babylon in tumulos, habitatio draconum, stupor et sibilus, eo quod non sit habitator.
³⁸ Simul ut leones rugient ; excutient comas veluti catuli leonum.
³⁹ In calore eorum ponam potus eorum, et inebriabo eos ut sopiantur, et dormiant somnum sempiternum, et non consurgant, dicit Dominus.
⁴⁰ Deducam eos quasi agnos ad victimam, et quasi arietes cum hædis.
⁴¹ Quomodo capta est Sesach, et comprehensa est inclyta universæ terræ ! quomodo facta est in stuporem Babylon inter gentes !
⁴² Ascendit super Babylonem mare : multitudine fluctuum ejus operta est.
⁴³ Factæ sunt civitates ejus in stuporem, terra inhabitabilis et deserta, terra in qua nullus habitet, nec transeat per eam filius hominis.
⁴⁴ Et visitabo super Bel in Babylone, et ejiciam quod absorbuerat de ore ejus : et non confluent ad eum ultra gentes, siquidem et murus Babylonis corruet.
⁴⁵ Egredimini de medio ejus, populus meus, ut salvet unusquisque animam suam ab ira furoris Domini,
⁴⁶ et ne forte mollescat cor vestrum, et timeatis auditum qui audietur in terra : et veniet in anno auditio, et post hunc annum auditio, et iniquitas in terra, et dominator super dominatorem.
⁴⁷ Propterea ecce dies veniunt, et visitabo super sculptilia Babylonis, et omnis terra ejus confundetur, et universi interfecti ejus cadent in medio ejus.
⁴⁸ Et laudabunt super Babylonem cæli et terra, et omnia quæ in eis sunt : quia ab aquilone venient ei prædones, ait Dominus.
⁴⁹ Et quomodo fecit Babylon, ut caderent occisi in Israël, sic de Babylone cadent occisi in universa terra.
⁵⁰ Qui fugistis gladium, venite, nolite stare : recordamini procul Domini, et Jerusalem ascendat super cor vestrum.
⁵¹ Confusi sumus, quoniam audivimus opprobrium : operuit ignominia facies nostras, quia venerunt alieni super sanctificationem domus Domini.
⁵² Propterea ecce dies veniunt, ait Dominus, et visitabo super sculptilia ejus, et in omni terra ejus mugiet vulneratus.
⁵³ Si ascenderit Babylon in cælum, et firmaverit in excelso robur suum, a me venient vastatores ejus, ait Dominus.
⁵⁴ Vox clamoris de Babylone, et contritio magna de terra Chaldæorum :
⁵⁵ quoniam vastavit Dominus Babylonem, et perdidit ex ea vocem magnam : et sonabunt fluctus eorum quasi aquæ multæ ; dedit sonitum vox eorum :
⁵⁶ quia venit super eam, id est super Babylonem, prædo, et apprehensi sunt fortes ejus, et emarcuit arcus eorum, quia fortis ultor Dominus reddens retribuet.
⁵⁷ Et inebriabo principes ejus, et sapientes ejus, et duces ejus, et magistratus ejus, et fortes ejus : et dormient somnum sempiternum, et non expergiscentur, ait Rex (Dominus exercituum nomen ejus).
⁵⁸ Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Murus Babylonis ille latissimus suffossione suffodietur, et portæ ejus excelsæ igni comburentur, et labores populorum ad nihilum, et gentium in ignem erunt, et disperibunt.]
⁵⁹ Verbum quod præcepit Jeremias propheta Saraiæ filio Neriæ filii Maasiæ, cum pergeret cum Sedecia rege in Babylonem, in anno quarto regni ejus : Saraias autem erat princeps prophetiæ.
⁶⁰ Et scripsit Jeremias omne malum quod venturum erat super Babylonem, in libro uno : omnia verba hæc quæ scripta sunt contra Babylonem.
⁶¹ Et dixit Jeremias ad Saraiam : Cum veneris in Babylonem, et videris, et legeris omnia verba hæc,
⁶² dices : Domine, tu locutus es contra locum istum, ut disperderes eum, ne sit qui in eo habitet, ab homine usque ad pecus, et ut sit perpetua solitudo.
⁶³ Cumque compleveris legere librum istum, ligabis ad eum lapidem, et projicies illum in medium Euphraten,
⁶⁴ et dices : Sic submergetur Babylon, et non consurget a facie afflictionis quam ego adduco super eam, et dissolvetur. Hucusque verba Jeremiæ.
