¹ Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
² Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the LORD.
⁴ Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders.
⁵ And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.
⁶ Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD.
⁷ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people?
⁸ Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
⁹ Shall I not visit them for these things? saith the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
¹⁰ For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.
¹¹ And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.
¹² Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?
¹³ And the LORD saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
¹⁴ But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:
¹⁵ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
¹⁶ I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.
¹⁷ Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come:
¹⁸ And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.
¹⁹ For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.
²⁰ Yet hear the word of the LORD, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation.
²¹ For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.
²² Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.
²³ Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:
²⁴ But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD.
²⁵ Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
²⁶ Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness: for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.

¹ «Si seulement j'avais dans le désert un campement de nomades! Je pourrais abandonner mon peuple, je pourrais m'en éloigner. En effet, ce sont tous des adultères, une bande de traîtres.
² Ils ont la langue tendue comme un arc et lancent le mensonge. Ce n'est pas grâce à la vérité qu'ils sont puissants dans le pays, car ils commettent mal sur mal, et moi, ils ne me connaissent pas, déclare l'Eternel.
³ »Que chacun se méfie de son ami! Ne faites pas confiance à vos frères! En effet, aucun frère n'hésite à tromper et tout ami propage des calomnies.
⁴ Chacun trompe son ami, ils ne disent pas la vérité. Ils exercent leur langue à mentir, ils se fatiguent à faire le mal.
⁵ Ta maison se trouve là où la trahison a son quartier général. C'est par trahison qu'ils refusent de me connaître, déclare l'Eternel.
⁶ »C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers: Je vais les fondre, je vais les mettre à l'épreuve. En effet, comment agir vis-à-vis de la fille de mon peuple?
⁷ Leur langue est une flèche meurtrière, ils ne parlent que pour trahir. De la bouche ils disent que tout va bien à leur prochain, mais intérieurement ils lui tendent un piège.
⁸ N'interviendrai-je pas contre un tel comportement, déclare l'Eternel, ne me vengerai-je pas d'une pareille nation?»
⁹ «Sur les montagnes je fais entendre mes pleurs et mes gémissements, sur les plaines du désert je prononce une complainte, car elles sont brûlées, plus personne n'y passe. On n'y entend plus le bruit que font les troupeaux; tant les oiseaux que les bêtes sauvages ont pris la fuite, ils ont disparu.»
¹⁰ «Je ferai de Jérusalem un tas de ruines, un repaire de chacals, et je ferai des villes de Juda un désert dépourvu de toute animation.»
¹¹ «Qui est un homme sage? Qu'il cherche à comprendre ce qui arrive! Qu'il annonce ce que la bouche de l'Eternel lui aura dit! Pourquoi le pays est-il détruit, brûlé comme un désert où personne ne passe?»
¹² L'Eternel dit: «C'est parce qu'ils ont abandonné ma loi, celle que j'avais mise devant eux, parce qu'ils ne m'ont pas écouté et ne l'ont pas suivie.
¹³ Au contraire, ils ont suivi les penchants de leur cœur, ils ont suivi les Baals, comme leurs pères le leur ont appris.
¹⁴ C'est pourquoi, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, le Dieu d'Israël: Je vais faire avaler de l'absinthe à ce peuple et je lui ferai boire de l'eau empoisonnée.
¹⁵ Je les disperserai parmi des nations inconnues d'eux aussi bien que de leurs ancêtres. J'enverrai l'épée à leur poursuite, jusqu'à leur extermination.
¹⁶ »Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers: Comprenez ce qui se passe, appelez les pleureuses et qu'elles viennent! Envoyez chercher des femmes expérimentées et qu'elles viennent!»
¹⁷ «Qu'elles se dépêchent de se lamenter sur nous! Que nos yeux versent des larmes et que de nos paupières coule de l'eau!
¹⁸ En effet, le cri d'une lamentation se fait entendre de Sion: ‘Ah! nous voici décimés, nous sommes couverts de honte parce que nous avons abandonné le pays, parce qu'ils ont démoli nos habitations!'
¹⁹ »Oui, femmes, écoutez la parole de l'Eternel! Que votre oreille fasse bon accueil à la parole qui sort de sa bouche! Enseignez à vos filles à se lamenter, enseignez-vous des complaintes les unes aux autres:
²⁰ ‘Oui, la mort est montée par nos fenêtres, elle a pénétré dans nos palais, elle fauche les enfants dans la rue, les jeunes gens sur les places.'»
²¹ «Annonce: ‘Voici ce que déclare l'Eternel: Les cadavres des hommes tomberont comme du fumier sur les champs, comme des épis qui tombent derrière le moissonneur et que personne ne ramasse.'
²² »Voici ce que dit l'Eternel: Que le sage ne se montre pas fier de sa sagesse, que le fort ne se montre pas fier de sa force, que le riche ne se montre pas fier de sa richesse,
²³ mais *que celui qui veut éprouver de la fierté mette sa fierté dans ceci: le fait d'avoir du discernement et de me connaître. En effet, c'est moi, l'Eternel, qui exerce la bonté, le droit et la justice sur la terre. Oui, c'est cela qui me fait plaisir, déclare l'Eternel.
²⁴ »Voici que les jours viennent, dit l'Eternel, où j'interviendrai contre tous les faux circoncis:
²⁵ l'Egypte, Juda, Edom, les Ammonites, Moab, tous ceux qui se rasent les coins de la barbe et qui habitent dans le désert. En effet, toutes les nations sont incirconcises, et la communauté d'Israël tout entière a le cœur incirconcis.»

² Quis dabit me in solitudine diversorium viatorum, et derelinquam populum meum, et recedam ab eis ? quia omnes adulteri sunt, cœtus prævaricatorum.
³ Et extenderunt linguam suam quasi arcum mendacii et non veritatis : confortati sunt in terra, quia de malo ad malum egressi sunt, et me non cognoverunt, dicit Dominus.
⁴ Unusquisque se a proximo suo custodiat, et in omni fratre suo non habeat fiduciam : quia omnis frater supplantans supplantabit, et omnis amicus fraudulenter incedet.
⁵ Et vir fratrem suum deridebit, et veritatem non loquentur : docuerunt enim linguam suam loqui mendacium ; ut inique agerent laboraverunt.
⁶ Habitatio tua in medio doli : in dolo renuerunt scire me, dicit Dominus.
⁷ Propterea hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Ecce ego conflabo, et probabo eos : quid enim aliud faciam a facie filiæ populi mei ?
⁸ Sagitta vulnerans lingua eorum, dolum locuta est. In ore suo pacem cum amico suo loquitur, et occulte ponit ei insidias.
⁹ Numquid super his non visitabo, dicit Dominus, aut in gente hujusmodi non ulciscetur anima mea ?
