¹ Lorsque tous les rois des Amorrhéens de l'autre côté du Jourdain, vers l'occident, et tous les rois des Cananéens sur les bords de la mer eurent appris que l'Eternel avait mis à sec les eaux du Jourdain devant les fils d'Israël jusqu'à ce que nous eussions passé, leur coeur se fondit et ils perdirent tout courage devant les fils d'Israël.
² Dans ce temps-là, l'Eternel dit à Josué : Fais-toi des couteaux de pierre et recommence à circoncire de nouveau les fils d'Israël.
³ Et Josué se fit des couteaux de pierre, et il circoncit les fils d'Israël sur la colline d'Araloth.
⁴ Et voici la raison pour laquelle Josué les circoncit : tout le peuple sorti de l'Egypte, les mâles, tous les hommes de guerre, étaient morts dans le désert, en chemin, lors de leur sortie d'Egypte.
⁵ Car tout le peuple à sa sortie était circoncis ; mais tout le peuple qui était né dans le désert, en chemin, lors de la sortie d'Egypte, n'avait pas été circoncis.
⁶ Car pendant quarante ans, les fils d'Israël avaient marché dans le désert, jusqu'à ce qu'eût péri toute la nation, les hommes de guerre qui étaient sortis de l'Egypte, lesquels n'avaient point obéi à la voix de l'Eternel ; c'est pourquoi l'Eternel leur jura qu'ils ne verraient pas le pays que l'Eternel avait juré à leurs pères de nous donner, pays découlant de lait et de miel.
⁷ Et il mit leurs fils à leur place ; ce sont eux que Josué circoncit, car ils étaient incirconcis, parce qu'on ne les avait pas circoncis en chemin.
⁸ Et lorsqu'on eut achevé de circoncire toute la nation, ils restèrent à leur place dans le camp jusqu'à ce qu'ils fussent guéris.
⁹ Et l'Eternel dit à Josué : Aujourd'hui, j'ai roulé de dessus vous l'opprobre de l'Egypte. Et ce lieu fut appelé Guilgal jusqu'à ce jour.
¹⁰ Et les fils d'Israël campèrent à Guilgal, et ils célébrèrent la Pâque, le quatorzième jour du mois, au soir, dans les plaines de Jéricho.
¹¹ Et ce jour-là même, dès le lendemain de la Pâque, ils mangèrent du produit du pays : des pains sans levain et du grain rôti.
¹² Et la manne cessa dès le lendemain du jour où ils mangèrent du produit du pays ; et les fils d'Israël n'eurent plus de manne, et ils mangèrent cette année-là du crû du pays de Canaan.
¹³ Et il arriva, comme Josué était près de Jéricho, qu'il leva les yeux et regarda ; et voici un homme se tenait debout devant lui, son épée nue à la main ; et Josué alla vers lui et lui dit : Es-tu des nôtres ou de nos ennemis.
¹⁴ Et il répondit : Non, mais je suis le chef de l'armée de l'Eternel ; je suis venu maintenant. Et Josué tomba le visage contre terre, et se prosterna et lui dit : Qu'est-ce que mon Seigneur dit à son serviteur ?
¹⁵ Et le chef de l'armée de l'Eternel dit à Josué : Ote tes souliers de tes pieds, car le lieu sur lequel tu te tiens est saint. Et Josué fit ainsi.

¹ And it came to pass, when all the kings of the Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
² At that time the LORD said unto Joshua, Make thee sharp knives, and circumcise again the children of Israel the second time.
³ And Joshua made him sharp knives, and circumcised the children of Israel at the hill of the foreskins.
⁴ And this is the cause why Joshua did circumcise: All the people that came out of Egypt, that were males, even all the men of war, died in the wilderness by the way, after they came out of Egypt.
⁵ Now all the people that came out were circumcised: but all the people that were born in the wilderness by the way as they came forth out of Egypt, them they had not circumcised.
⁶ For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD sware that he would not shew them the land, which the LORD sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.
⁷ And their children, whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
⁸ And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
⁹ And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal unto this day.
¹⁰ And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho.
¹¹ And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day.
¹² And the manna ceased on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan that year.
¹³ And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?
¹⁴ And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my Lord unto his servant?
¹⁵ And the captain of the LORD's host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.

¹ Postquam ergo audierunt omnes reges Amorrhæorum, qui habitabant trans Jordanem ad occidentalem plagam, et cuncti reges Chanaan, qui propinqua possidebant magni maris loca, quod siccasset Dominus fluenta Jordanis coram filiis Israël donec transirent, dissolutum est cor eorum, et non remansit in eis spiritus, timentium introitum filiorum Israël.
² Eo tempore ait Dominus ad Josue : Fac tibi cultros lapideos, et circumcide secundo filios Israël.
³ Fecit quod jusserat Dominus, et circumcidit filios Israël in colle præputiorum.
⁴ Hæc autem causa est secundæ circumcisionis : omnis populus, qui egressus est de Ægypto generis masculini, universi bellatores viri, mortui sunt in deserto per longissimos viæ circuitus,
⁵ qui omnes circumcisi erant. Populus autem qui natus est in deserto,
⁶ per quadraginta annos itineris latissimæ solitudinis incircumcisus fuit : donec consumerentur qui non audierant vocem Domini, et quibus ante juraverat ut non ostenderet eis terram lacte et melle manantem.
⁷ Horum filii in locum successerunt patrum, et circumcisi sunt a Josue : quia sicut nati fuerant, in præputio erant, nec eos in via aliquis circumciderat.
⁸ Postquam autem omnes circumcisi sunt, manserunt in eodem castrorum loco, donec sanarentur.
⁹ Dixitque Dominus ad Josue : Hodie abstuli opprobrium Ægypti a vobis. Vocatumque est nomen loci illius Galgala, usque in præsentem diem.
¹⁰ Manseruntque filii Israël in Galgalis, et fecerunt Phase quartadecima die mensis ad vesperum in campestribus Jericho :
¹¹ et comederunt de frugibus terræ die altero, azymos panes, et polentam ejusdem anni.
¹² Defecitque manna postquam comederunt de frugibus terræ, nec usi sunt ultra cibo illo filii Israël, sed comederunt de frugibus præsentis anni terræ Chanaan.
¹³ Cum autem esset Josue in agro urbis Jericho, levavit oculos, et vidit virum stantem contra se, evaginatum tenentem gladium : perrexitque ad eum, et ait : Noster es, an adversariorum ?
¹⁴ Qui respondit : Nequaquam : sed sum princeps exercitus Domini, et nunc venio.
¹⁵ Cecidit Josue pronus in terram, et adorans ait : Quid dominus meus loquitur ad servum suum ?
¹⁶ Solve, inquit, calceamentum tuum de pedibus tuis : locus enim, in quo stas, sanctus est. Fecitque Josue ut sibi fuerat imperatum.
