¹ Et l'Eternel dit à Josué : Ne crains point et ne t'effraie point ! Prends avec toi tous les gens de guerre, lève-toi et marche contre Aï. Vois ! j'ai livré entre tes mains le roi d'Aï, son peuple, sa ville et son pays.
² Et tu traiteras Aï et son roi comme tu as traité Jéricho et son roi ; seulement vous garderez pour vous son butin et son bétail. Dresse une embuscade à la ville par derrière.
³ Et Josué se leva avec tous les gens de guerre pour monter contre Aï, et Josué choisit trente mille hommes vaillants et les fit partir de nuit ;
⁴ et il leur donna cet ordre : Soyez sur vos gardes ! vous qui serez en embuscade derrière la ville, ne vous éloignez pas beaucoup de la ville, et tous tenez-vous prêts.
⁵ Et moi et tout le peuple qui est avec moi, nous nous approcherons de la ville, et il arrivera qu'ils sortiront pour venir à notre rencontre comme la première fois, et nous fuirons devant eux.
⁶ Et ils sortiront pour nous poursuivre jusqu'à ce que nous les ayons attirés loin de la ville, car ils diront : Ils fuient devant nous, comme la première fois. Et nous fuirons devant eux.
⁷ Et vous, sortez de l'embuscade et emparez-vous de la ville : l'Eternel votre Dieu l'a livrée entre vos mains.
⁸ Et lorsque vous aurez pris la ville, vous la brûlerez. Vous agirez comme l'Eternel l'a commandé. Voyez : vous avez reçu mes ordres.
⁹ Et Josué les fit partir, et ils allèrent se placer en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l'occident d'Aï. Mais Josué passa cette nuit au milieu du peuple.
¹⁰ Et le lendemain matin Josué passa le peuple en revue, et il monta contre Aï, lui et les Anciens d'Israël à la tête du peuple.
¹¹ Et tous les gens de guerre qui étaient avec lui montèrent ; et ils s'avancèrent et vinrent en face de la ville ; et ils campèrent au nord d'Aï, la vallée s'étendant entre eux et Aï.
¹² Et il prit environ cinq mille hommes et il les plaça en embuscade entre Béthel et Aï, à l'occident de la ville.
¹³ Et le peuple disposa tout le camp, qui était au nord de la ville, et son embuscade à l'occident de la ville, et Josué s'avança durant cette nuit au milieu de la vallée.
¹⁴ Et lorsque le roi d'Aï vit cela, les hommes de la ville se hâtèrent le lendemain matin de sortir à la rencontre d'Israël pour le combattre, lui et tout son peuple, [se rassemblant] en un point convenu, au commencement de la plaine ; et il ne savait pas qu'une embuscade avait été dressée contre lui derrière la ville.
¹⁵ Et Josué et tout Israël se laissèrent battre par eux, et s'enfuirent par le chemin du désert.
¹⁶ Et tout le peuple qui était dans la ville fut assemblé à grands cris pour les poursuivre ; et ils poursuivirent Josué et furent attirés loin de la ville.
¹⁷ Et il ne resta dans Aï et dans Béthel aucun homme qui ne sortit pour poursuivre Israël ; ils laissèrent la ville ouverte et poursuivirent Israël.
¹⁸ Et l'Eternel dit à Josué : Etends contre Aï le javelot que tu as à la main, car je vais la livrer entre tes mains ; et Josué étendit contre la ville le javelot qu'il avait à la main.
¹⁹ Dès qu'il eut étendu sa main, les gens de l'embuscade se levèrent en hâte du lieu où ils étaient ; ils coururent, vinrent vers la ville et la prirent, et aussitôt ils mirent le feu à la ville.
²⁰ Et les hommes d'Aï se retournèrent et regardèrent ; et voici la fumée de la ville montait vers le ciel, et il n'y avait pour eux aucune possibilité de fuir ni d'un côté ni de l'autre, le peuple qui fuyait vers le désert s'étant retourné contre ceux qui le poursuivaient.
²¹ Et Josué et tout Israël, voyant que les gens de l'embuscade avaient pris la ville et que la fumée de la ville montait, firent volte-face et frappèrent les hommes d'Aï.
²² Et les autres sortirent de la ville à leur rencontre, et les hommes d'Aï furent enveloppés par les Israélites, par les uns d'un côté, par les autres de l'autre ; et ils les frappèrent au point qu'il ne leur resta ni survivant ni fugitif.
²³ Et ils prirent vivant le roi d'Aï et l'amenèrent à Josué.
²⁴ Et lorsque Israël eut achevé de tuer tous les habitants d'Aï dans la campagne, dans le désert où ils l'avaient poursuivi, et que tous furent tombés sous le tranchant de l'épée jusqu'au dernier, tous les Israélites revinrent à Aï et ils la frappèrent au tranchant de l'épée.
²⁵ Et tous ceux qui périrent en ce jour, tant hommes, que femmes, furent au nombre de douze mille, tous gens d'Aï.
²⁶ Et Josué ne retira point sa main qu'il tenait étendue avec le javelot, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût traité à la façon de l'interdit tous les habitants d'Aï.
²⁷ Les Israélites prirent seulement pour eux le bétail et le butin de cette ville, conformément à l'ordre que l'Eternel avait donné à Josué.
²⁸ Et Josué brûla Aï et en fit à jamais un monceau de ruines, ce qu'elle est encore aujourd'hui.
²⁹ Quant au roi d'Aï, il le pendit à un arbre jusqu'au soir, et lorsque le soleil se coucha, Josué donna l'ordre d'enlever de l'arbre son cadavre, et ils le jetèrent à l'entrée de la porte de la ville, et ils élevèrent sur lui un grand amas de pierres qui subsiste encore aujourd'hui.
³⁰ Alors Josué bâtit un autel à l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, sur le mont Ebal,
³¹ selon l'ordre que Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, avait donné aux fils d'Israël, comme il est écrit dans le livre de la loi de Moïse, un autel de pierres brutes que l'on n'avait point taillées avec le fer. Et ils y offrirent des holocaustes à l'Eternel, et firent des sacrifices de reconnaissance.
³² Et il écrivit là sur des pierres une copie de la loi, que Moïse avait écrite en présence des enfants, d'Israël.
³³ Et tout Israël, et ses Anciens, et ses officiers, et ses juges se tenaient debout des deux côtés de l'arche, en face des sacrificateurs lévitiques qui portaient l'arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel, les étrangers aussi bien que les membres du peuple, une moitié du côté du mont Garizim, une moitié du côté du mont Ebal, selon l'ordre que Moïse, serviteur de l'Eternel, avait donné auparavant, de commencer par bénir le peuple d'Israël.
³⁴ Et ensuite, il lut toutes les paroles de la loi, la bénédiction et la malédiction, suivant tout ce qui est écrit dans le livre de la loi.
³⁵ Et il n'y eut point de paroles, de tout ce que Moïse avait prescrit, que Josué ne lût en présence de toute l'assemblée d'Israël, des femmes, des enfants et des étrangers qui marchaient au milieu d'eux.

¹ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
² And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.
³ So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
⁴ And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:
⁵ And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,
⁶ (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.
⁷ Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand.
⁸ And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.
⁹ Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
¹⁰ And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
¹¹ And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.
¹² And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
¹³ And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
¹⁴ And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.
¹⁵ And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
¹⁶ And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
¹⁷ And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
¹⁸ And the LORD said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
¹⁹ And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
²⁰ And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
²¹ And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.
²² And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
²³ And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
²⁴ And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
²⁵ And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
²⁶ For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
²⁷ Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the LORD which he commanded Joshua.
²⁸ And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.
²⁹ And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
³⁰ Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal,
³¹ As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.
³² And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
³³ And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
³⁴ And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
³⁵ There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

²⁶ וִיהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ לֹֽא־ הֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָטָ֖ה בַּכִּיד֑וֹן עַ֚ד אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶחֱרִ֔ים אֵ֖ת כָּל־ יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָעָֽי׃
²⁷ רַ֣ק הַבְּהֵמָ֗ה וּשְׁלַל֙ הָעִ֣יר הַהִ֔יא בָּזְז֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖ה אֶת־ יְהוֹשֻֽׁעַ׃
²⁸ וַיִּשְׂרֹ֥ף יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ אֶת־ הָעָ֑י וַיְשִׂימֶ֤הָ תֵּל־ עוֹלָם֙ שְׁמָמָ֔ה עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
²⁹ וְאֶת־ מֶ֧לֶךְ הָעַ֛י תָּלָ֥ה עַל־ הָעֵ֖ץ עַד־ עֵ֣ת הָעָ֑רֶב וּכְב֣וֹא הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ֩ צִוָּ֨ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֜עַ וַיֹּרִ֧ידוּ אֶת־ נִבְלָת֣וֹ מִן־ הָעֵ֗ץ וַיַּשְׁלִ֤יכוּ אוֹתָהּ֙ אֶל־ פֶּ֙תַח֙ שַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֔יר וַיָּקִ֤ימוּ עָלָיו֙ גַּל־ אֲבָנִ֣ים גָּד֔וֹל עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃
³⁰ אָ֣ז יִבְנֶ֤ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֙עַ֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לַֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בְּהַ֖ר עֵיבָֽל׃
³¹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר צִוָּה֩ מֹשֶׁ֨ה עֶֽבֶד־ יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כַּכָּתוּב֙ בְּסֵ֙פֶר֙ תּוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה מִזְבַּח֙ אֲבָנִ֣ים שְׁלֵמ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא־ הֵנִ֥יף עֲלֵיהֶ֖ן בַּרְזֶ֑ל וַיַּעֲל֨וּ עָלָ֤יו עֹלוֹת֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַֽיִּזְבְּח֖וּ שְׁלָמִֽים׃
³² וַיִּכְתָּב־ שָׁ֖ם עַל־ הָאֲבָנִ֑ים אֵ֗ת מִשְׁנֵה֙ תּוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּתַ֔ב לִפְנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃
³³ וְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֡ל וּזְקֵנָ֡יו וְשֹׁטְרִ֣ים ׀ וְשֹׁפְטָ֡יו עֹמְדִ֣ים מִזֶּ֣ה ׀ וּמִזֶּ֣ה ׀ לָאָר֡וֹן נֶגֶד֩ הַכֹּהֲנִ֨ים הַלְוִיִּ֜ם נֹשְׂאֵ֣י ׀ אֲר֣וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָ֗ה כַּגֵּר֙ כָּֽאֶזְרָ֔ח חֶצְיוֹ֙ אֶל־ מ֣וּל הַר־ גְּרִזִ֔ים וְהַֽחֶצְי֖וֹ אֶל־ מ֣וּל הַר־ עֵיבָ֑ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֜ה מֹשֶׁ֣ה עֶֽבֶד־ יְהוָ֗ה לְבָרֵ֛ךְ אֶת־ הָעָ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃
³⁴ וְאַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵ֗ן קָרָא֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֣י הַתּוֹרָ֔ה הַבְּרָכָ֖ה וְהַקְּלָלָ֑ה כְּכָל־ הַכָּת֖וּב בְּסֵ֥פֶר הַתּוֹרָֽה׃
³⁵ לֹֽא־ הָיָ֣ה דָבָ֔ר מִכֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁר־ צִוָּ֣ה מֹשֶׁ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־ קָרָ֜א יְהוֹשֻׁ֗עַ נֶ֣גֶד כָּל־ קְהַ֤ל יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְהַנָּשִׁ֣ים וְהַטַּ֔ף וְהַגֵּ֖ר הַהֹלֵ֥ךְ בְּקִרְבָּֽם׃
