Jg 12 (King James)

¹ And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and went northward, and said unto Jephthah, Wherefore passedst thou over to fight against the children of Ammon, and didst not call us to go with thee? we will burn thine house upon thee with fire.
² And Jephthah said unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the children of Ammon; and when I called you, ye delivered me not out of their hands.
³ And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?
⁴ Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim, because they said, Ye Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites.
⁵ And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay;
⁶ Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.
⁷ And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then died Jephthah the Gileadite, and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.
⁸ And after him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
⁹ And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
¹⁰ Then died Ibzan, and was buried at Bethlehem.
¹¹ And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.
¹² And Elon the Zebulonite died, and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.
¹³ And after him Abdon the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.
¹⁴ And he had forty sons and thirty nephews, that rode on threescore and ten ass colts: and he judged Israel eight years.
¹⁵ And Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died, and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the mount of the Amalekites.

¹ Les hommes d'Éphraïm, s'étant rassemblés, partirent pour le nord, et dirent à Jephthé: Pourquoi es-tu allé combattre contre les enfants d'Ammon, sans nous avoir appelés à marcher avec toi? Nous brûlerons ta maison, et nous te brûlerons aussi.
² Et Jephthé leur dit: Nous avons eu de grandes contestations avec les enfants d'Ammon, moi et mon peuple; et quand je vous ai appelés, vous ne m'avez pas délivré de leurs mains.
³ Et voyant que vous ne me délivriez pas, j'ai exposé ma vie, et j'ai marché contre les enfants d'Ammon, et l'Éternel les a livrés en ma main. Pourquoi donc êtes-vous montés aujourd'hui contre moi, pour me faire la guerre?
⁴ Puis Jephthé, ayant rassemblé tous les gens de Galaad, combattit contre Éphraïm; et les hommes de Galaad battirent ceux d'Éphraïm, parce que ceux-ci avaient dit: Vous êtes des fugitifs d'Éphraïm! Galaad est au milieu d'Éphraïm, au milieu de Manassé!
⁵ Et Galaad s'empara des gués du Jourdain, avant que ceux d'Éphraïm n'y arrivassent. Et quand un des fugitifs d'Éphraïm disait: Laissez-moi passer; les gens de Galaad lui disaient: Es-tu Éphratien? et il répondait: Non.
⁶ Alors ils lui disaient: Eh bien, dis: Shibboleth (fleuve); et il disait Sibboleth, sans faire attention à bien prononcer; alors, le saisissant, ils le mettaient à mort aux gués du Jourdain. Il périt en ce temps-là quarante-deux mille hommes d'Éphraïm.
⁷ Jephthé jugea Israël six ans. Puis Jephthé, le Galaadite, mourut, et fut enseveli dans une des villes de Galaad.
⁸ Après lui, Ibtsan de Bethléhem jugea Israël.
⁹ Il eut trente fils, et il maria hors de sa maison trente filles. Il fit venir de dehors trente filles pour ses fils, et il jugea Israël sept ans.
¹⁰ Puis Ibtsan mourut et fut enseveli à Bethléhem.
¹¹ Après lui, Élon, le Zabulonite, jugea Israël; il jugea Israël dix ans.
¹² Puis Élon, le Zabulonite, mourut, et fut enseveli à Ajalon, dans la terre de Zabulon.
¹³ Après lui Abdon, fils d'Hillel, le Pirathonite, jugea Israël.
¹⁴ Il eut quarante fils, et trente petits-fils, qui montaient sur soixante et dix ânons; et il jugea Israël huit ans.
¹⁵ Puis Abdon, fils d'Hillel, le Pirathonite, mourut, et fut enseveli à Pirathon, dans le pays d'Éphraïm, dans la montagne des Amalécites.

¹ Ecce autem in Ephraim orta est seditio : nam transeuntes contra aquilonem, dixerunt ad Jephte : Quare vadens ad pugnam contra filios Ammon, vocare nos noluisti, ut pergeremus tecum ? igitur incendemus domum tuam.
² Quibus ille respondit : Disceptatio erat mihi et populo meo contra filios Ammon vehemens : vocavique vos, ut præberetis mihi auxilium, et facere noluistis.
³ Quod cernens, posui animam meam in manibus meis, transivique ad filios Ammon, et tradidit eos Dominus in manus meas. Quid commerui, ut adversum me consurgatis in prælium ?
⁴ Vocatis itaque ad se cunctis viris Galaad, pugnabat contra Ephraim : percusseruntque viri Galaad Ephraim, quia dixerat : Fugitivus est Galaad de Ephraim, et habitat in medio Ephraim et Manasse.
⁵ Occupaveruntque Galaaditæ vada Jordanis, per quæ Ephraim reversurus erat. Cumque venisset ad ea de Ephraim numero, fugiens, atque dixisset : Obsecro ut me transire permittatis : dicebant ei Galaaditæ : Numquid Ephrathæus es ? quo dicente : Non sum :
⁶ interrogabant eum : Dic ergo Scibboleth, quod interpretatur Spica. Qui respondebat : Sibboleth : eadem littera spicam exprimere non valens. Statimque apprehensum jugulabant in ipso Jordanis transitu. Et ceciderunt in illo tempore de Ephraim quadraginta duo millia.
⁷ Judicavit itaque Jephte Galaadites Israël sex annis : et mortuus est, ac sepultus in civitate sua Galaad.
⁸ Post hunc judicavit Israël Abesan de Bethlehem :
⁹ qui habuit triginta filios, et totidem filias, quas emittens foras, maritis dedit, et ejusdem numeri filiis suis accepit uxores, introducens in domum suam. Qui septem annis judicavit Israël :
¹⁰ mortuusque est, ac sepultus in Bethlehem.
¹¹ Cui successit Ahialon Zabulonites : et judicavit Israël decem annis :
¹² mortuusque est, ac sepultus in Zabulon.
¹³ Post hunc judicavit Israël Abdon filius Illel Pharathonites :
¹⁴ qui habuit quadraginta filios, et triginta ex eis nepotes, ascendentes super septuaginta pullos asinarum. Et judicavit Israël octo annis :
¹⁵ mortuusque est, ac sepultus in Pharathon terræ Ephraim, in monte Amalec.
