¹ Josias avait huit ans quand il commença à régner, et il régna trente-et-un ans à Jérusalem.
² Et il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de l'Eternel et marcha dans les voies de David, son père, et ne s'en détourna ni à droite ni à gauche.
³ La huitième année de son règne, comme il était encore jeune, il commença à rechercher le Dieu de David, son père ; et la douzième année, il commença à purifier Juda et Jérusalem des hauts-lieux et des aschères et des images taillées et des images de fonte.
⁴ Et on renversa devant lui les autels de Baal, et il fit abattre les colonnes solaires qui étaient placées dessus ; et il brisa les aschères, les images taillées et les images de fonte, et les réduisit en poussière, et il répandit cette poussière sur les sépulcres de ceux qui leur avaient sacrifié,
⁵ et il brûla les ossements des sacrificateurs sur leurs autels, et il purifia Juda et Jérusalem.
⁶ Et dans les villes de Manassé, d'Ephraïm, de Siméon et jusqu'en Nephthali, partout au milieu de leurs ruines,
⁷ il renversa les autels, il mit en pièces et réduisit en poussière les aschères et les images taillées, et il abattit toutes les colonnes solaires dans tout le pays d'Israël. Puis il retourna à Jérusalem.
⁸ La dix-huitième année de son règne, tandis qu'il purifiait le pays et la Maison, il envoya Saphan, fils d'Atsalia, et Maaséia, chef de la ville, et Joach, fils de Joachaz, le chancelier, pour réparer la maison de l'Eternel, son Dieu.
⁹ Et ils vinrent vers Hilkija, le grand sacrificateur, et remirent l'argent qui avait été apporté à la maison de Dieu, et que les Lévites, gardiens du seuil, avaient recueilli de Manassé, d'Ephraïm et de tout le reste d'Israël, et de tout Juda et Benjamin, et des habitants de Jérusalem.
¹⁰ Et ils le remirent en mains de ceux qui avaient la charge de l'ouvrage, qui étaient préposés à la maison de l'Eternel ; et ceux qui faisaient l'ouvrage, qui travaillaient dans la maison de l'Eternel, le donnèrent pour restaurer et réparer la maison :
¹¹ ils le donnèrent aux charpentiers et aux maçons, afin d'acheter des pierres de taille et des bois pour la charpente et afin de munir de poutres les bâtiments que les rois de Juda avaient détruits.
¹² Et ces hommes travaillèrent avec fidélité à leur ouvrage, et sur eux étaient préposés Jahath et Abdias, les Lévites, d'entre les fils de Mérari, et Zacharie et Mésullam, d'entre les fils des Kéhathites, pour la direction, ainsi que tous ceux des Lévites qui étaient habiles musiciens.
¹³ Ils surveillaient aussi les porteurs et dirigeaient tous les ouvriers, pour chaque genre de travaux. Et d'entre les Lévites il y avait des secrétaires, des commissaires et des portiers.
¹⁴ Et lorsqu'ils sortirent l'argent qui avait été apporté à la maison de l'Eternel, Hilkija, le sacrificateur, trouva le livre de la loi de l'Eternel, donnée par Moïse.
¹⁵ Et Hilkija prit la parole et dit à Saphan, le secrétaire : J'ai trouvé le livre de la loi dans la maison de l'Eternel. Et Hilkija donna le livre à Saphan.
¹⁶ Et Saphan apporta le livre au roi et fit en outre rapport au roi, disant : Tes serviteurs ont fait tout ce dont ils ont été chargés ;
¹⁷ et ils ont versé l'argent qui se trouvait dans la maison de l'Eternel et l'ont remis aux préposés et aux ouvriers.
¹⁸ Et Saphan, le secrétaire, dit au roi : Hilkija, le sacrificateur, m'a donné un livre. Et Saphan y lut devant le roi.
¹⁹ Et quand le roi eut entendu les paroles de la loi, il déchira ses vêtements.
²⁰ Et le roi donna cet ordre à Hilkija, à Achikam, fils de Saphan, à Abdon, fils de Michée, à Saphan, le secrétaire, et à Asaïa, serviteur du roi, disant :
²¹ Allez, consultez l'Eternel pour moi et pour ce qui reste en Israël et en Juda, au sujet des paroles de ce livre qui a été trouvé, car grande est la colère de l'Eternel qui s'est répandue sur nous, parce que nos pères n'ont pas observé la parole de l'Eternel pour faire selon tout ce qui est écrit dans ce livre.
²² Et Hilkija et ceux que le roi [avait désignés] allèrent vers Hulda, la prophétesse, femme de Sallum, fils de Thokéath, fils de Hasra, gardien des vêtements ; et elle demeurait à Jérusalem, dans le nouveau quartier, et ils lui parlèrent dans ce sens.
²³ Et elle leur dit : Ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël : Dites à l'homme qui vous a envoyés vers moi :
²⁴ Ainsi parle l'Eternel : Je vais faire venir le malheur sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants, toutes les malédictions écrites dans le livre qu'on a lu devant le roi de Juda.
²⁵ En retour de ce qu'ils m'ont abandonné et de ce qu'ils ont fait des encensements à d'autres dieux, pour m'irriter par toute l'oeuvre de leurs mains, ma colère s'est répandue sur ce lieu, et elle ne s'éteindra pas.
²⁶ Et au roi de Juda qui vous a envoyés pour consulter l'Eternel, voici ce que vous lui direz : Ainsi a dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, touchant les paroles que tu as entendues :
²⁷ Parce que ton coeur s'est attendri et que tu t'es humilié devant Dieu quand tu as entendu ses paroles contre ce lieu et contre ses habitants ; parce que tu t'es humilié devant moi, et que tu as déchiré tes vêtements, et que tu as pleuré devant moi, moi aussi j'ai entendu, déclare l'Eternel.
²⁸ Je vais te recueillir vers tes pères ; tu seras recueilli en paix dans ton sépulcre, et tes yeux ne verront pas tout le mal que je ferai venir sur ce lieu et sur ses habitants. Et ils rapportèrent cela au roi.
²⁹ Et le roi donna l'ordre de réunir tous les Anciens de Juda et de Jérusalem ;
³⁰ et le roi monta à la maison de l'Eternel, ainsi que tous les hommes de Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem, et les sacrificateurs et les Lévites, et tout le peuple, depuis le plus grand jusqu'au plus petit ; et il leur lut toutes les paroles du livre de l'alliance qui avait été trouvé dans la maison de l'Eternel.
³¹ Et le roi se tint sur son estrade et prit l'engagement devant l'Eternel de suivre l'Eternel et de garder ses ordonnances, ses témoignages et ses statuts de tout son coeur et de toute son âme, en exécutant les paroles de l'alliance, écrites dans ce livre.
³² Et il fit adhérer tous ceux qui se trouvaient à Jérusalem et en Benjamin. Et les habitants de Jérusalem se conformèrent à l'alliance de Dieu, du Dieu de leurs pères.
³³ Et Josias fit disparaître toutes les abominations de tous les pays appartenant aux fils d'Israël, et il astreignit tous ceux qui se trouvaient en Israël à servir l'Eternel, leur Dieu. Pendant toute sa vie, ils ne se détournèrent point de l'Eternel, le Dieu de leurs pères.

¹ Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.
² And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
³ For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.
⁴ And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.
⁵ And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.
⁶ And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.
⁷ And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.
⁸ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the LORD his God.
⁹ And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
¹⁰ And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and amend the house:
¹¹ Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
¹² And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.
¹³ Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.
¹⁴ And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.
¹⁵ And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.
¹⁶ And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.
¹⁷ And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.
¹⁸ Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.
¹⁹ And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
²⁰ And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king's, saying,
²¹ Go, enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.
²² And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.
²³ And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,
²⁴ Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
²⁵ Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.
²⁶ And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
²⁷ Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
²⁸ Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
²⁹ Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
³⁰ And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
³¹ And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.
³² And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
³³ And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
