¹ And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.
² Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
³ And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?
⁴ Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.
⁵ When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
⁶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Bethrehob and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ishtob twelve thousand men.
⁷ And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
⁸ And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ishtob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.
⁹ When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:
¹⁰ And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.
¹¹ And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.
¹² Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
¹³ And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.
¹⁴ And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.
¹⁵ And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.
¹⁶ And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
¹⁷ And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.
¹⁸ And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.
¹⁹ And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

Affront des Ammonites

¹ Après cela, le roi des Ammonites mourut et son fils Hanun devint roi à sa place.
² David se dit: «Je vais montrer de la bonté envers Hanun, le fils de Nachash, tout comme son père en a montré envers moi.» Et il envoya ses serviteurs le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des Ammonites,
³ les chefs des Ammonites dirent à leur maître Hanun: «Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs? N'est-ce pas pour faire une reconnaissance de la ville, pour l'explorer et la détruire, qu'il envoie ses serviteurs vers toi?»
⁴ Alors Hanun arrêta les serviteurs de David, leur fit raser la moitié de la barbe et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu'en haut des cuisses. Puis il les renvoya.
⁵ On en informa David et il envoya des messagers à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient couverts de honte. Le roi leur fit dire: «Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé et ne revenez qu'ensuite.»
⁶ Voyant qu'ils avaient provoqué le dégoût de David, les Ammonites firent engager 20'000 fantassins chez les Syriens de Beth-Rehob et chez ceux de Tsoba, 1000 hommes chez le roi de Maaca et 12'000 chez les habitants de Tob.
⁷ A cette nouvelle, David envoya contre eux Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.
⁸ Les Ammonites sortirent de leurs villes et se rangèrent en ordre de bataille à l'entrée de la ville. Les Syriens de Tsoba et de Rehob ainsi que les hommes de Tob et de Maaca étaient à part dans la campagne.
⁹ Joab vit qu'il avait à combattre par-devant et par-derrière. Il choisit alors sur toute l'élite d'Israël un groupe qu'il plaça en face des Syriens.
¹⁰ Il plaça le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abishaï, pour qu'il s'oppose aux Ammonites.
¹¹ Il lui dit: «Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, et si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je viendrai au tien.
¹² Sois fort, montrons du courage pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!»
¹³ Joab s'avança avec sa troupe pour attaquer les Syriens, et ceux-ci prirent la fuite devant lui.
¹⁴ Quand les Ammonites virent que les Syriens s'étaient enfuis, ils prirent eux aussi la fuite devant Abishaï et rentrèrent dans la ville. Joab s'éloigna des Ammonites et revint à Jérusalem.
¹⁵ Voyant qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, les Syriens regroupèrent leurs forces.
¹⁶ Hadadézer envoya chercher les Syriens qui habitaient de l'autre côté de l'Euphrate. Ils arrivèrent à Hélam, avec à leur tête Shobac, le chef de l'armée d'Hadadézer.
¹⁷ On l'annonça à David, qui rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain et vint à Hélam. Les Syriens se rangèrent en ordre de bataille face à David et combattirent contre lui,
¹⁸ mais ils prirent la fuite devant Israël. David tua parmi eux l'équipage de 700 chars et 40'000 cavaliers. Il frappa aussi Shobac, le chef de leur armée, qui mourut sur place.
¹⁹ Tous les rois soumis à Hadadézer, se voyant battus par Israël, firent la paix avec les Israélites et leur furent asservis. Quant aux Syriens, ils n'osèrent plus se porter au secours des Ammonites.

¹ Factum est autem post hæc ut moreretur rex filiorum Ammon, et regnavit Hanon filius ejus pro eo.
² Dixitque David : Faciam misericordiam cum Hanon filio Naas, sicut fecit pater ejus mecum misericordiam. Misit ergo David, consolans eum per servos suos super patris interitu. Cum autem venissent servi David in terram filiorum Ammon,
³ dixerunt principes filiorum Ammon ad Hanon dominum suum : Putas quod propter honorem patris tui miserit David ad te consolatores, et non ideo ut investigaret, et exploraret civitatem, et everteret eam, misit David servos suos ad te ?
⁴ Tulit itaque Hanon servos David, rasitque dimidiam partem barbæ eorum et præscidit vestes eorum medias usque ad nates, et dimisit eos.
