KJV ¹ Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

WLC ¹ וַיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵי־ כֵ֔ן וַיָּ֕מָת נָחָ֖שׁ מֶ֣לֶךְ בְּנֵי־ עַמּ֑וֹן וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

BCC ² David dit : « Je montrerai de la bienveillance à Hanon, fils de Naas, car son père m'a montré de la bienveillance. » Et David envoya des messagers pour le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David furent arrivés, dans le pays des fils d'Ammon, auprès de Hanon, pour le consoler,

KJV ² And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

WLC ² וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜יד אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־ חֶ֣סֶד ׀ עִם־ חָנ֣וּן בֶּן־ נָחָ֗שׁ כִּֽי־ עָשָׂ֨ה אָבִ֤יו עִמִּי֙ חֶ֔סֶד וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח דָּוִ֛יד מַלְאָכִ֖ים לְנַחֲמ֣וֹ עַל־ אָבִ֑יו וַיָּבֹאוּ֩ עַבְדֵ֨י דָוִ֜יד אֶל־ אֶ֧רֶץ בְּנֵי־ עַמּ֛וֹן אֶל־ חָנ֖וּן לְנַחֲמֽוֹ׃

BCC ³ les princes des fils d'Amman dirent à Hanon : « Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs ? N'est-ce pas pour reconnaître et détruire, et pour explorer le pays, que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi ! »

KJV ³ But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

WLC ³ וַיֹּאמְרוּ֩ שָׂרֵ֨י בְנֵי־ עַמּ֜וֹן לְחָנ֗וּן הַֽמְכַבֵּ֨ד דָּוִ֤יד אֶת־ אָבִ֙יךָ֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ כִּֽי־ שָׁלַ֥ח לְךָ֖ מְנַחֲמִ֑ים הֲלֹ֡א בַּ֠עֲבוּר לַחְקֹ֨ר וְלַהֲפֹ֤ךְ וּלְרַגֵּל֙ הָאָ֔רֶץ בָּ֥אוּ עֲבָדָ֖יו אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

BCC ⁴ Alors Hanon, ayant saisi les serviteurs de David, les rasa et coupa leurs habits à mi-hauteur, jusqu'à la hanche, et il les renvoya.

KJV ⁴ Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

WLC ⁴ וַיִּקַּ֨ח חָנ֜וּן אֶת־ עַבְדֵ֤י דָוִיד֙ וַֽיְגַלְּחֵ֔ם וַיִּכְרֹ֧ת אֶת־ מַדְוֵיהֶ֛ם בַּחֵ֖צִי עַד־ הַמִּפְשָׂעָ֑ה וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽם׃

BCC ⁵ On alla informer David de ce qui était arrivé à ses hommes, et il envoya des gens à leur rencontre, car ces hommes étaient dans une grande confusion, et le roi leur fit dire : « Restez à Jéricho, jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé, et vous reviendrez ensuite. »

KJV ⁵ Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

WLC ⁵ וַיֵּלְכוּ֩ וַיַּגִּ֨ידוּ לְדָוִ֤יד עַל־ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח לִקְרָאתָ֔ם כִּי־ הָי֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים נִכְלָמִ֣ים מְאֹ֑ד וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ שְׁב֣וּ בִֽירֵח֔וֹ עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁר־ יְצַמַּ֥ח זְקַנְכֶ֖ם וְשַׁבְתֶּֽם׃

BCC ⁶ Les fils d'Ammon virent qu'ils s'étaient rendus odieux à David, et Hanon et les fils d'Ammon envoyèrent mille talents d'argent pour prendre à leur solde des chars et des cavaliers chez les Syriens de Mésopotamie et chez les Syriens de Maacha et de Sola.

KJV ⁶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּרְאוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן כִּ֥י הִֽתְבָּאֲשׁ֖וּ עִם־ דָּוִ֑יד וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח חָ֠נוּן וּבְנֵ֨י עַמּ֜וֹן אֶ֣לֶף כִּכַּר־ כֶּ֗סֶף לִשְׂכֹּ֣ר לָ֠הֶם מִן־ אֲרַ֨ם נַהֲרַ֜יִם וּמִן־ אֲרַ֤ם מַעֲכָה֙ וּמִצּוֹבָ֔ה רֶ֖כֶב וּפָרָשִֽׁים׃

BCC ⁷ Ils prirent à leur solde trente-deux mille chars, et le roi de Maacha avec son peuple, lesquels vinrent camper près de Médaba. Les fils d'Ammon se rassemblèrent de leurs villes et vinrent au combat.

KJV ⁷ So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

WLC ⁷ וַיִּשְׂכְּר֣וּ לָהֶ֡ם שְׁנַיִם֩ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים אֶ֜לֶף רֶ֗כֶב וְאֶת־ מֶ֤לֶךְ מַעֲכָה֙ וְאֶת־ עַמּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֕אוּ וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֣י מֵידְבָ֑א וּבְנֵ֣י עַמּ֗וֹן נֶאֶסְפוּ֙ מֵעָ֣רֵיהֶ֔ם וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ לַמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

BCC ⁸ David l'apprit et fit partir contre eux Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.

KJV ⁸ And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

WLC ⁸ וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע דָּוִ֑יד וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ אֶת־ יוֹאָ֔ב וְאֵ֥ת כָּל־ צָבָ֖א הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃

BCC ⁹ Les fils d'Amman sortirent et se rangèrent en bataille à la porte de la ville ; les rois qui étaient venus étaient à part dans la campagne.

KJV ⁹ And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

WLC ⁹ וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וַיַּֽעַרְכ֥וּ מִלְחָמָ֖ה פֶּ֣תַח הָעִ֑יר וְהַמְּלָכִ֣ים אֲשֶׁר־ בָּ֔אוּ לְבַדָּ֖ם בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃

BCC ¹⁰ Lorsque Joab vit qu'il y avait un front de bataille devant et derrière lui, il choisit parmi toute l'élite d'Israël un corps qu'il rangea en face des Syriens,

KJV ¹⁰ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיַּ֣רְא יוֹאָ֗ב כִּֽי־ הָיְתָ֧ה פְנֵי־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה אֵלָ֖יו פָּנִ֣ים וְאָח֑וֹר וַיִּבְחַ֗ר מִכָּל־ בָּחוּר֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ לִקְרַ֥את אֲרָֽם׃

BCC ¹¹ et il mit le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abisaï, les rangeant en face des fils d'Ammon. Il dit :

KJV ¹¹ And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

WLC ¹¹ וְאֵת֙ יֶ֣תֶר הָעָ֔ם נָתַ֕ן בְּיַ֖ד אַבְשַׁ֣י אָחִ֑יו וַיַּ֣עַרְכ֔וּ לִקְרַ֖את בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃

BCC ¹² « Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours ; et si les fils d'Aramon sont plus forts que toi, je te secourrai.

KJV ¹² And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

WLC ¹² וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אִם־ תֶּחֱזַ֤ק מִמֶּ֙נִּי֙ אֲרָ֔ם וְהָיִ֥יתָ לִּ֖י לִתְשׁוּעָ֑ה וְאִם־ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּ֛וֹן יֶֽחֶזְק֥וּ מִמְּךָ֖ וְהוֹשַׁעְתִּֽיךָ׃

BCC ¹³ Sois ferme, et combattons vaillamment pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que Yahweh fasse ce qui semblera bon à ses yeux ! »

KJV ¹³ Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

WLC ¹³ חֲזַ֤ק וְנִֽתְחַזְּקָה֙ בְּעַד־ עַמֵּ֔נוּ וּבְעַ֖ד עָרֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וַֽיהוָ֔ה הַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינָ֖יו יַעֲשֶֽׂה׃

BCC ¹⁴ Joab s'avança donc, ainsi que le peuple qui était avec lui, contre les Syriens pour les attaquer, et ceux-ci s'enfuirent devant lui.

KJV ¹⁴ So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ יוֹאָ֜ב וְהָעָ֧ם אֲשֶׁר־ עִמּ֛וֹ לִפְנֵ֥י אֲרָ֖ם לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וַיָּנ֖וּסוּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃

BCC ¹⁵ Les fils d'Amman, voyant que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, s'enfuirent, eux aussi, devant Abisaï, frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab rentra dans Jérusalem.

KJV ¹⁵ And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

WLC ¹⁵ וּבְנֵ֨י עַמּ֤וֹן רָאוּ֙ כִּי־ נָ֣ס אֲרָ֔ם וַיָּנ֣וּסוּ גַם־ הֵ֗ם מִפְּנֵי֙ אַבְשַׁ֣י אָחִ֔יו וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ הָעִ֑ירָה וַיָּבֹ֥א יוֹאָ֖ב יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

BCC ¹⁶ Les Syriens, voyant qu'ils avaient été battus devant Israël. envoyèrent des messagers pour faire venir les Syriens qui étaient de l'autre côté du fleuve ; et Sophach, chef de l'armée d'Hadarézer marchait devant eux.

KJV ¹⁶ And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיַּ֣רְא אֲרָ֗ם כִּ֣י נִגְּפוּ֮ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים וַיּוֹצִ֣יאוּ אֶת־ אֲרָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֑ר וְשׁוֹפַ֛ךְ שַׂר־ צְבָ֥א הֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃

BCC ¹⁷ David en reçut la nouvelle et, ayant assemblé tout Israël, il passa le Jourdain, vint vers eux, et disposa l'attaque contre eux ; et David rangea son armée en bataille contre les Syriens. Ceux-ci engagèrent le combat contre lui,

KJV ¹⁷ And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֻּגַּ֣ד לְדָוִ֗יד וַיֶּאֱסֹ֤ף אֶת־ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ר הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וַיָּבֹ֣א אֲלֵהֶ֔ם וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ אֲלֵהֶ֑ם וַיַּעֲרֹ֨ךְ דָּוִ֜יד לִקְרַ֤את אֲרָם֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה וַיִּֽלָּחֲמ֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

BCC ¹⁸ mais les Syriens s'enfuirent devant Israël, et David tua aux Syriens les chevaux de sept mille chars et quarante mille hommes de pied ; il mit aussi à mort Sophach, chef de l'armée.

KJV ¹⁸ But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

WLC ¹⁸ וַיָּ֣נָס אֲרָם֮ מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג דָּוִ֜יד מֵאֲרָ֗ם שִׁבְעַ֤ת אֲלָפִים֙ רֶ֔כֶב וְאַרְבָּעִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֣ישׁ רַגְלִ֑י וְאֵ֛ת שׁוֹפַ֥ךְ שַֽׂר־ הַצָּבָ֖א הֵמִֽית׃

BCC ¹⁹ Les vassaux d'Hadarézer, se voyant battus devant Israël, firent la paix avec David et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus porter secours aux fils d'Ammon.

KJV ¹⁹ And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיִּרְא֞וּ עַבְדֵ֣י הֲדַדְעֶ֗זֶר כִּ֤י נִגְּפוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּשְׁלִ֥ימוּ עִם־ דָּוִ֖יד וַיַּֽעַבְדֻ֑הוּ וְלֹא־ אָבָ֣ה אֲרָ֔ם לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ אֶת־ בְּנֵי־ עַמּ֖וֹן עֽוֹד׃
