KJV ¹ Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

KJV ² And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

S21 ² David se dit: «Je vais montrer de la bonté envers Hanun, le fils de Nachash, car son père en a montré envers moi.» Et il envoya des messagers le consoler au sujet de son père. Lorsque les serviteurs de David arrivèrent dans le pays des Ammonites vers Hanun pour le consoler,

KJV ³ But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

S21 ³ les chefs des Ammonites dirent à Hanun: «Penses-tu que ce soit pour honorer ton père que David t'envoie des consolateurs? N'est-ce pas pour faire une reconnaissance de la ville et la détruire, pour explorer le pays, que ses serviteurs sont venus vers toi?»

KJV ⁴ Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

S21 ⁴ Alors Hanun arrêta les serviteurs de David, les fit raser et fit couper leurs habits par le milieu jusqu'en haut des cuisses. Puis il les renvoya.

KJV ⁵ Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

S21 ⁵ On vint informer David de ce qui était arrivé à ces hommes et il envoya des messagers à leur rencontre, car ils étaient couverts de honte. Le roi leur fit dire: «Restez à Jéricho jusqu'à ce que votre barbe ait repoussé et ne revenez qu'ensuite.»

KJV ⁶ And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syriamaachah, and out of Zobah.

S21 ⁶ Les Ammonites virent qu'ils avaient provoqué le dégoût de David, et Hanun et les Ammonites envoyèrent 30 tonnes d'argent pour engager des chars et des cavaliers chez les Syriens de Mésopotamie et chez ceux de Maaca et de Tsoba.

KJV ⁷ So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

S21 ⁷ Ils engagèrent 32'000 chars ainsi que le roi de Maaca avec son peuple, qui vinrent installer leur camp devant Médeba. Les Ammonites sortirent de leurs villes et se rassemblèrent pour marcher au combat.

KJV ⁸ And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

S21 ⁸ A cette nouvelle, David envoya contre eux Joab et toute l'armée, les hommes vaillants.

KJV ⁹ And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

S21 ⁹ Les Ammonites sortirent et se rangèrent en ordre de bataille à l'entrée de la ville. Les rois venus en renfort étaient à part dans la campagne.

KJV ¹⁰ Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

S21 ¹⁰ Joab vit qu'il avait à combattre par-devant et par-derrière. Il choisit alors sur toute l'élite d'Israël un groupe qu'il plaça en face des Syriens.

KJV ¹¹ And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

S21 ¹¹ Il plaça le reste du peuple sous le commandement de son frère Abishaï, pour qu'il s'oppose aux Ammonites.

KJV ¹² And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

S21 ¹² Il lui dit: «Si les Syriens sont plus forts que moi, tu viendras à mon secours, et si les Ammonites sont plus forts que toi, je viendrai au tien.

KJV ¹³ Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

S21 ¹³ Sois fort, montrons du courage pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu, et que l'Eternel fasse ce qui lui semblera bon!»

KJV ¹⁴ So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

S21 ¹⁴ Joab s'avança avec sa troupe pour attaquer les Syriens, et ceux-ci prirent la fuite devant lui.

KJV ¹⁵ And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

S21 ¹⁵ Quand les Ammonites virent que les Syriens s'étaient enfuis, ils prirent eux aussi la fuite devant Abishaï, le frère de Joab, et rentrèrent dans la ville. Et Joab revint à Jérusalem.

KJV ¹⁶ And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

S21 ¹⁶ Voyant qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, les Syriens envoyèrent chercher les Syriens qui habitaient de l'autre côté de l'Euphrate. Shophach, le chef de l'armée d'Hadarézer, était à leur tête.

KJV ¹⁷ And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

S21 ¹⁷ On l'annonça à David, qui rassembla tout Israël, passa le Jourdain, marcha contre eux et se prépara à les attaquer. David se rangea en ordre de bataille contre les Syriens, mais, après avoir combattu contre lui,

KJV ¹⁸ But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

S21 ¹⁸ ils prirent la fuite devant Israël. David tua parmi eux l'équipage de 7000 chars et 40'000 fantassins. Il fit aussi mourir Shophach, le chef de l'armée.

KJV ¹⁹ And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

S21 ¹⁹ Ceux qui étaient soumis à Hadarézer, se voyant battus par Israël, firent la paix avec David et lui furent asservis. Quant aux Syriens, ils ne voulurent plus se porter au secours des Ammonites.
