BAN ¹ Et longtemps après, dans la troisième année, la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie, disant : Va, montre-toi à Achab, et j'enverrai de la pluie sur la face de la terre.

KJV ¹ And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

WLC ¹ וַיְהִי֙ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים וּדְבַר־ יְהוָ֗ה הָיָה֙ אֶל־ אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖ית לֵאמֹ֑ר לֵ֚ךְ הֵרָאֵ֣ה אֶל־ אַחְאָ֔ב וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה מָטָ֖ר עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃

BAN ² Et Elie s'en alla pour se montrer à Achab. Et la famine était grande à Samarie.

KJV ² And Elijah went to shew himself unto Ahab. And there was a sore famine in Samaria.

VULC ² Ivit ergo Elias, ut ostenderet se Achab : erat autem fames vehemens in Samaria.

WLC ² וַיֵּ֙לֶךְ֙ אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ לְהֵרָא֖וֹת אֶל־ אַחְאָ֑ב וְהָרָעָ֖ב חָזָ֥ק בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃

BAN ³ Et Achab appela Abdias, intendant du palais. Et Abdias craignait fort l'Eternel.

KJV ³ And Ahab called Obadiah, which was the governor of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the LORD greatly:

VULC ³ Vocavitque Achab Abdiam dispensatorem domus suæ : Abdias autem timebat Dominum valde.

WLC ³ וַיִּקְרָ֣א אַחְאָ֔ב אֶל־ עֹבַדְיָ֖הוּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־ הַבָּ֑יִת וְעֹבַדְיָ֗הוּ הָיָ֥ה יָרֵ֛א אֶת־ יְהוָ֖ה מְאֹֽד׃

BAN ⁴ Et quand Jézabel exterminait les prophètes de l'Eternel, Abdias avait pris cent prophètes et les avait cachés par cinquante dans des cavernes et les avait pourvus de pain et d'eau.

KJV ⁴ For it was so, when Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water.)

VULC ⁴ Nam cum interficeret Jezabel prophetas Domini, tulit ille centum prophetas, et abscondit eos quinquagenos et quinquagenos in speluncis, et pavit eos pane et aqua.

WLC ⁴ וַיְהִי֙ בְּהַכְרִ֣ית אִיזֶ֔בֶל אֵ֖ת נְבִיאֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּקַּ֨ח עֹבַדְיָ֜הוּ מֵאָ֣ה נְבִאִ֗ים וַֽיַּחְבִּיאֵ֞ם חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אִישׁ֙ בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה וְכִלְכְּלָ֖ם לֶ֥חֶם וָמָֽיִם׃

BAN ⁵ Et Achab dit à Abdias : Va dans le pays à toutes les sources d'eau et à tous les torrents ; peut-être trouverons-nous de l'herbe, et nous conserverons en vie les chevaux et les mulets, et nous ne serons pas obligés de détruire une partie du bétail.

KJV ⁵ And Ahab said unto Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.

VULC ⁵ Dixit ergo Achab ad Abdiam : Vade in terram ad universos fontes aquarum, et in cunctas valles, si forte possimus invenire herbam, et salvare equos et mulos, et non penitus jumenta intereant.

WLC ⁵ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַחְאָב֙ אֶל־ עֹ֣בַדְיָ֔הוּ לֵ֤ךְ בָּאָ֙רֶץ֙ אֶל־ כָּל־ מַעְיְנֵ֣י הַמַּ֔יִם וְאֶ֖ל כָּל־ הַנְּחָלִ֑ים אוּלַ֣י ׀ נִמְצָ֣א חָצִ֗יר וּנְחַיֶּה֙ ס֣וּס וָפֶ֔רֶד וְל֥וֹא נַכְרִ֖ית מֵהַבְּהֵמָֽה׃

BAN ⁶ Et ils se partagèrent le pays pour le parcourir. Achab allait seul par un chemin, et Abdias allait seul par un autre chemin.

KJV ⁶ So they divided the land between them to pass throughout it: Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

VULC ⁶ Diviseruntque sibi regiones ut circuirent eas : Achab ibat per viam unam, et Abdias per viam alteram seorsum.

WLC ⁶ וַֽיְחַלְּק֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם אֶת־ הָאָ֖רֶץ לַֽעֲבָר־ בָּ֑הּ אַחְאָ֞ב הָלַ֨ךְ בְּדֶ֤רֶךְ אֶחָד֙ לְבַדּ֔וֹ וְעֹֽבַדְיָ֛הוּ הָלַ֥ךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ־ אֶחָ֖ד לְבַדּֽוֹ׃

BAN ⁷ Et comme Abdias était en chemin, voici il rencontra Elie et il le reconnut et tomba sur sa face et dit : Est-ce bien toi, mon seigneur Elie ?

KJV ⁷ And as Obadiah was in the way, behold, Elijah met him: and he knew him, and fell on his face, and said, Art thou that my lord Elijah?

VULC ⁷ Cumque esset Abdias in via, Elias occurrit ei : qui cum cognovisset eum, cecidit super faciem suam, et ait : Num tu es, domine mi, Elias ?

WLC ⁷ וַיְהִ֤י עֹבַדְיָ֙הוּ֙ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵלִיָּ֖הוּ לִקְרָאת֑וֹ וַיַּכִּרֵ֙הוּ֙ וַיִּפֹּ֣ל עַל־ פָּנָ֔יו וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הַאַתָּ֥ה זֶ֖ה אֲדֹנִ֥י אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃

BAN ⁸ Et il lui dit : C'est moi ; va, dis à ton seigneur : Voici Elie !

KJV ⁸ And he answered him, I am: go, tell thy lord, Behold, Elijah is here.

VULC ⁸ Cui ille respondit : Ego. Vade, et dic domino tuo : Adest Elias.

WLC ⁸ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ אָ֑נִי לֵ֛ךְ אֱמֹ֥ר לַאדֹנֶ֖יךָ הִנֵּ֥ה אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃

BAN ⁹ Et il dit : Quel péché ai-je commis, que tu livres ton serviteur à Achab pour me faire mourir ?

KJV ⁹ And he said, What have I sinned, that thou wouldest deliver thy servant into the hand of Ahab, to slay me?

VULC ⁹ Et ille : Quid peccavi, inquit, quoniam tradis me servum tuum in manu Achab, ut interficiat me ?

WLC ⁹ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מֶ֣ה חָטָ֑אתִי כִּֽי־ אַתָּ֞ה נֹתֵ֧ן אֶֽת־ עַבְדְּךָ֛ בְּיַד־ אַחְאָ֖ב לַהֲמִיתֵֽנִי׃

BAN ¹⁰ L'Eternel ton Dieu est vivant, s'il y a nation et royaume où mon seigneur n'ait pas envoyé pour te chercher ! Et quand ils disaient : Il n'est pas ici, il faisait jurer le royaume ou la nation qu'on ne pouvait pas te trouver.

KJV ¹⁰ As the LORD thy God liveth, there is no nation or kingdom, whither my lord hath not sent to seek thee: and when they said, He is not there; he took an oath of the kingdom and nation, that they found thee not.

VULC ¹⁰ Vivit Dominus Deus tuus, quia non est gens aut regnum quo non miserit dominus meus te requirens : et respondentibus cunctis : Non est hic : adjuravit regna singula et gentes, eo quod minime reperireris.

BAN ¹² Et à peine serai-je parti d'avec toi, que l'Esprit de l'Eternel t'enlèvera je ne sais où ; et je serai venu informer Achab, et il ne te trouvera pas, et il me tuera. Et ton serviteur craint l'Eternel dès sa jeunesse.

KJV ¹² And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee, that the Spirit of the LORD shall carry thee whither I know not; and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the LORD from my youth.

VULC ¹² Cumque recessero a te, spiritus Domini asportabit te in locum quem ego ignoro : et ingressus nuntiabo Achab, et non inveniens te, interficiet me : servus autem tuus timet Dominum ab infantia sua.

BAN ¹³ N'a-t-on pas rapporté à mon seigneur ce que j'ai fait quand Jézabel tuait les prophètes de l'Eternel, comment j'ai caché cent hommes des prophètes de l'Eternel par cinquante dans des cavernes et je les ai pourvus de pain et d'eau ?

KJV ¹³ Was it not told my lord what I did when Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I hid an hundred men of the LORD's prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and water?

VULC ¹³ Numquid non indicatum est tibi domino meo quid fecerim cum interficeret Jezabel prophetas Domini, quod absconderim de prophetis Domini centum viros, quinquagenos et quinquagenos, in speluncis, et paverim eos pane et aqua ?

KJV ¹⁵ And Elijah said, As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, I will surely shew myself unto him to day.

VULC ¹⁵ Et dixit Elias : Vivit Dominus exercituum, ante cujus vultum sto, quia hodie apparebo ei.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ חַ֚י יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָמַ֖דְתִּי לְפָנָ֑יו כִּ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם אֵרָאֶ֥ה אֵלָֽיו׃

BAN ¹⁶ Et Abdias s'en alla à la rencontre d'Achab et lui rapporta cela. Et Achab s'en vint à la rencontre d'Elie.

KJV ¹⁶ So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him: and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

VULC ¹⁶ Abiit ergo Abdias in occursum Achab, et indicavit ei : venitque Achab in occursum Eliæ.

BAN ¹⁷ Et quand Achab vit Elie, Achab lui dit : Est-ce toi, fléau d'Israël !

KJV ¹⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Art thou he that troubleth Israel?

VULC ¹⁷ Et cum vidisset eum, ait : Tune es ille, qui conturbas Israël ?

WLC ¹⁷ וַיְהִ֛י כִּרְא֥וֹת אַחְאָ֖ב אֶת־ אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַחְאָב֙ אֵלָ֔יו הַאַתָּ֥ה זֶ֖ה עֹכֵ֥ר יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

BAN ¹⁸ Et il dit : Je ne suis pas le fléau d'Israël, mais c'est toi et la maison de ton père, parce que vous avez abandonné les commandements de l'Eternel et que tu as suivi les Baals.

KJV ¹⁸ And he answered, I have not troubled Israel; but thou, and thy father's house, in that ye have forsaken the commandments of the LORD, and thou hast followed Baalim.

VULC ¹⁸ Et ille ait : Non ego turbavi Israël, sed tu, et domus patris tui, qui dereliquistis mandata Domini, et secuti estis Baalim.

WLC ¹⁸ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֤א עָכַ֙רְתִּי֙ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י אִם־ אַתָּ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ בַּֽעֲזָבְכֶם֙ אֶת־ מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ אַחֲרֵ֥י הַבְּעָלִֽים׃

BAN ¹⁹ Et maintenant envoie, rassemble vers moi tout Israël au mont Carmel, et les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes des aschères, qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.

KJV ¹⁹ Now therefore send, and gather to me all Israel unto mount Carmel, and the prophets of Baal four hundred and fifty, and the prophets of the groves four hundred, which eat at Jezebel's table.

VULC ¹⁹ Verumtamen nunc mitte, et congrega ad me universum Israël in monte Carmeli, et prophetas Baal quadringentos quinquaginta, prophetasque lucorum quadringentos, qui comedunt de mensa Jezabel.

BAN ²⁰ Et Achab envoya à tous les fils d'Israël et rassembla les prophètes au mont Carmel !

KJV ²⁰ So Ahab sent unto all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together unto mount Carmel.

VULC ²⁰ Misit Achab ad omnes filios Israël, et congregavit prophetas in monte Carmeli.

WLC ²⁰ וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח אַחְאָ֖ב בְּכָל־ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּקְבֹּ֥ץ אֶת־ הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים אֶל־ הַ֥ר הַכַּרְמֶֽל׃

BAN ²¹ Et Elie s'approcha de tout le peuple et dit : Jusques à quand clocherez-vous des deux côtés ? Si l'Eternel est Dieu, suivez-le, et si c'est Baal, suivez-le ! Et le peuple ne lui répondit rien.

KJV ²¹ And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.

VULC ²¹ Accedens autem Elias ad omnem populum, ait : Usquequo claudicatis in duas partes ? si Dominus est Deus, sequimini eum : si autem Baal, sequimini illum. Et non respondit ei populus verbum.

WLC ²¹ וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ אֶל־ כָּל־ הָעָ֗ם וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ עַד־ מָתַ֞י אַתֶּ֣ם פֹּסְחִים֮ עַל־ שְׁתֵּ֣י הַסְּעִפִּים֒ אִם־ יְהוָ֤ה הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ לְכ֣וּ אַחֲרָ֔יו וְאִם־ הַבַּ֖עַל לְכ֣וּ אַחֲרָ֑יו וְלֹֽא־ עָנ֥וּ הָעָ֛ם אֹת֖וֹ דָּבָֽר׃

BAN ²² Et Elie dit au peuple : Moi, je suis resté seul prophète de l'Eternel, et les prophètes de Baal sont quatre cent cinquante.

KJV ²² Then said Elijah unto the people, I, even I only, remain a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets are four hundred and fifty men.

VULC ²² Et ait rursus Elias ad populum : Ego remansi propheta Domini solus : prophetæ autem Baal quadringenti et quinquaginta viri sunt.

WLC ²² וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־ הָעָ֔ם אֲנִ֞י נוֹתַ֧רְתִּי נָבִ֛יא לַיהוָ֖ה לְבַדִּ֑י וּנְבִיאֵ֣י הַבַּ֔עַל אַרְבַּע־ מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים אִֽישׁ׃

BAN ²³ Qu'on nous donne deux taureaux et qu'ils en choisissent un pour eux et qu'ils le dépècent et qu'ils le placent sur le bûcher et qu'ils n'y mettent pas le feu. Et moi je préparerai l'autre taureau et je le placerai sur le bûcher et je n'y mettrai pas le feu.

KJV ²³ Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will dress the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

VULC ²³ Dentur nobis duo boves, et illi eligant sibi bovem unum, et in frusta cædentes ponant super ligna, ignem autem non supponant : et ego faciam bovem alterum, et imponam super ligna, ignem autem non supponam.

WLC ²³ וְיִתְּנוּ־ לָ֜נוּ שְׁנַ֣יִם פָּרִ֗ים וְיִבְחֲר֣וּ לָהֶם֩ הַפָּ֨ר הָאֶחָ֜ד וִֽינַתְּחֻ֗הוּ וְיָשִׂ֙ימוּ֙ עַל־ הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאֵ֖שׁ לֹ֣א יָשִׂ֑ימוּ וַאֲנִ֞י אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה ׀ אֶת־ הַפָּ֣ר הָאֶחָ֗ד וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ עַל־ הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאֵ֖שׁ לֹ֥א אָשִֽׂים׃

BAN ²⁴ Et vous invoquerez le nom de votre dieu, et moi j'invoquerai le nom de l'Eternel ; et le dieu qui répondra par le feu, c'est lui qui est Dieu. Et tout le peuple répondit : C'est bien !

KJV ²⁴ And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD: and the God that answereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken.

VULC ²⁴ Invocate nomina deorum vestrorum, et ego invocabo nomen Domini mei : et Deus qui exaudierit per ignem, ipse sit Deus. Respondens omnis populus ait : Optima propositio.

BAN ²⁵ Et Elie dit aux prophètes de Baal : Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux et offrez les-premiers, car vous êtes les plus nombreux, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu, et ne mettez pas le feu.

KJV ²⁵ And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under.

VULC ²⁵ Dixit ergo Elias prophetis Baal : Eligite vobis bovem unum, et facite primi, quia vos plures estis : et invocate nomina deorum vestrorum, ignemque non supponatis.

BAN ²⁶ Et ils prirent le taureau qu'on leur avait donné et l'offrirent et invoquèrent le nom de Baal depuis le matin jusqu'à midi, disant : Baal, réponds-nous ! Mais il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse. Et ils se balançaient autour de l'autel qu'on avait fait.

KJV ²⁶ And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

BAN ²⁷ Et à midi Elie se moqua d'eux et dit : Criez à voix haute, car il est dieu ; il médite, ou il est allé à l'écart, ou il est en voyage ; peut-être qu'il dort et il se réveillera.

KJV ²⁷ And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.

VULC ²⁷ Cumque esset jam meridies, illudebat illis Elias, dicens : Clamate voce majore : deus enim est, et forsitan loquitur, aut in diversorio est, aut in itinere, aut certe dormit, ut excitetur.

WLC ²⁷ וַיְהִ֨י בַֽצָּהֳרַ֜יִם וַיְהַתֵּ֧ל בָּהֶ֣ם אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ קִרְא֤וּ בְקוֹל־ גָּדוֹל֙ כִּֽי־ אֱלֹהִ֣ים ה֔וּא כִּ֣י שִׂ֧יחַ וְכִֽי־ שִׂ֛יג ל֖וֹ וְכִֽי־ דֶ֣רֶךְ ל֑וֹ אוּלַ֛י יָשֵׁ֥ן ה֖וּא וְיִקָֽץ׃

BAN ²⁸ Et ils crièrent à voix haute et se firent des incisions, selon leur coutume, avec des épées et des piques, jusqu'à faire couler le sang sur eux.

KJV ²⁸ And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

VULC ²⁸ Clamabant ergo voce magna, et incidebant se juxta ritum suum cultris et lanceolis, donec perfunderentur sanguine.

WLC ²⁸ וַֽיִּקְרְאוּ֙ בְּק֣וֹל גָּד֔וֹל וַיִּתְגֹּֽדְדוּ֙ כְּמִשְׁפָּטָ֔ם בַּחֲרָב֖וֹת וּבָֽרְמָחִ֑ים עַד־ שְׁפָךְ־ דָּ֖ם עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

BAN ²⁹ Et quand midi fut passé, ils prophétisèrent jusqu'à l'heure où on offre l'oblation ; et il n'y eut ni voix ni réponse, ni personne qui fit attention.

KJV ²⁹ And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded.

VULC ²⁹ Postquam autem transiit meridies, et illis prophetantibus venerat tempus quo sacrificium offerri solet, nec audiebatur vox, nec aliquis respondebat, nec attendebat orantes,

BAN ³⁰ Et Elie dit à tout le peuple : Approchez-vous de moi. Et tout le peuple s'approcha de lui. Et il répara l'autel de l'Eternel qui avait été renversé.

KJV ³⁰ And Elijah said unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down.

BAN ³¹ Et Elie prit douze pierres, selon le nombre des tribus des fils de Jacob, auquel la parole de l'Eternel avait été adressée disant : Israël sera ton nom.

KJV ³¹ And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, saying, Israel shall be thy name:

VULC ³¹ Et tulit duodecim lapides juxta numerum tribuum filiorum Jacob, ad quem factus est sermo Domini, dicens : Israël erit nomen tuum.

WLC ³¹ וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ שְׁתֵּ֤ים עֶשְׂרֵה֙ אֲבָנִ֔ים כְּמִסְפַּ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־ יַעֲקֹ֑ב אֲשֶׁר֩ הָיָ֨ה דְבַר־ יְהוָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִהְיֶ֥ה שְׁמֶֽךָ׃

BAN ³² Et il bâtit avec les pierres un autel au nom de l'Eternel et fit autour de l'autel un fossé de la capacité d'une double mesure de grain.

KJV ³² And with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD: and he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of seed.

VULC ³² Et ædificavit de lapidibus altare in nomine Domini : fecitque aquæductum, quasi per duas aratiunculas in circuitu altaris,

BAN ³³ Et il arrangea le bois et dépeça le taureau et le plaça sur le bois.

KJV ³³ And he put the wood in order, and cut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.

VULC ³³ et composuit ligna : divisitque per membra bovem, et posuit super ligna,

WLC ³³ וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ אֶת־ הָֽעֵצִ֑ים וַיְנַתַּח֙ אֶת־ הַפָּ֔ר וַיָּ֖שֶׂם עַל־ הָעֵצִֽים׃

BAN ³⁴ Et il dit : Remplissez d'eau quatre cruches et versez-en sur l'holocauste et sur le bois. Et il dit : Faites-le une seconde fois. Et ils le firent une seconde fois. Et il dit : Faites-le une troisième fois. Et ils le firent une troisième fois.

KJV ³⁴ And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.

BAN ³⁵ Et les eaux coulèrent tout à l'entour de l'autel, et il remplit aussi d'eau le fossé.

KJV ³⁵ And the water ran round about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water.

VULC ³⁵ et currebant aquæ circum altare, et fossa aquæductus repleta est.

WLC ³⁵ וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ הַמַּ֔יִם סָבִ֖יב לַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וְגַ֥ם אֶת־ הַתְּעָלָ֖ה מִלֵּא־ מָֽיִם׃

BAN ³⁶ Et à l'heure où l'on offre l'oblation, Elie le prophète s'approcha et dit : Eternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël, qu'il soit connu aujourd'hui que tu es Dieu en Israël et que je suis ton serviteur et que c'est par ta parole que j'ai fait toutes ces choses.

KJV ³⁶ And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

BAN ³⁷ Réponds-moi, Eternel, réponds-moi, et que ce peuple sache que toi, Eternel, tu es Dieu et que tu as ramené leur coeur !

KJV ³⁷ Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.

BAN ³⁸ Et le feu de l'Eternel tomba et consuma l'holocauste et le bois, et les pierres et la poussière, et huma l'eau qui était dans le fossé.

KJV ³⁸ Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

VULC ³⁸ Cecidit autem ignis Domini, et voravit holocaustum, et ligna, et lapides, pulverem quoque, et aquam quæ erat in aquæductu lambens.

BAN ³⁹ Et tout le peuple le vit et ils tombèrent sur leurs faces et dirent : C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu ! C'est l'Eternel qui est Dieu !

KJV ³⁹ And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.

VULC ³⁹ Quod cum vidisset omnis populus, cecidit in faciem suam, et ait : Dominus ipse est Deus, Dominus ipse est Deus.

BAN ⁴⁰ Et Elie dit : Saisissez les prophètes de Baal et qu'il n'en échappe pas un ! Et ils les saisirent et Elie les fit descendre au torrent de Kison et les égorgea là.

KJV ⁴⁰ And Elijah said unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there.

BAN ⁴¹ Et Elie dit à Achab : Monte, mange et bois, car [j'entends] un bruit de grande pluie.

KJV ⁴¹ And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain.

VULC ⁴¹ Et ait Elias ad Achab : Ascende, comede, et bibe, quia sonus multæ pluviæ est.

BAN ⁴² Et Achab monta pour manger et pour boire. Et Elie monta vers le sommet du Carmel et il se courba jusqu'à terre et mit sa face entre ses genoux.

KJV ⁴² So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees,

VULC ⁴² Ascendit Achab ut comederet et biberet : Elias autem ascendit in verticem Carmeli, et pronus in terram posuit faciem suam inter genua sua,

BAN ⁴³ Et il dit à son jeune homme : Monte, je te prie, regarde du côté de la mer. Et il monta et regarda, et il dit : Il n'y a rien. Et il lui dit : Retourne ! Il le dit sept fois.

KJV ⁴³ And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times.

VULC ⁴³ et dixit ad puerum suum : Ascende, et prospice contra mare. Qui cum ascendisset, et contemplatus esset, ait : Non est quidquam. Et rursum ait illi : Revertere septem vicibus.

WLC ⁴³ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־ נַעֲר֗וֹ עֲלֵֽה־ נָא֙ הַבֵּ֣ט דֶּֽרֶךְ־ יָ֔ם וַיַּ֙עַל֙ וַיַּבֵּ֔ט וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵ֣ין מְא֑וּמָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שֻׁ֖ב שֶׁ֥בַע פְּעָמִֽים׃

BAN ⁴⁴ Et la septième fois il dit : Je vois un petit nuage, comme la paume de la main, qui monte de la mer. Et il dit : Monte, dis à Achab : Attelle et descends, de peur que la pluie ne te retienne.

KJV ⁴⁴ And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not.

VULC ⁴⁴ In septima autem vice, ecce nubecula parva quasi vestigium hominis ascendebat de mari. Qui ait : Ascende, et dic Achab : Junge currum tuum et descende, ne occupet te pluvia.

WLC ⁴⁴ וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּשְּׁבִעִ֔ית וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה־ עָ֛ב קְטַנָּ֥ה כְּכַף־ אִ֖ישׁ עֹלָ֣ה מִיָּ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֲלֵ֨ה אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־ אַחְאָב֙ אֱסֹ֣ר וָרֵ֔ד וְלֹ֥א יַעַצָרְכָ֖ה הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃

BAN ⁴⁵ Et en un instant les cieux furent obscurcis d'épais nuages, avec du vent, et il y eut une grande pluie. Et Achab monta dans son char et s'en alla à Jizréel.

KJV ⁴⁵ And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel.

VULC ⁴⁵ Cumque se verteret huc atque illuc, ecce cæli contenebrati sunt, et nubes, et ventus, et facta est pluvia grandis. Ascendens itaque Achab, abiit in Jezrahel :

WLC ⁴⁵ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ עַד־ כֹּ֣ה וְעַד־ כֹּ֗ה וְהַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ הִֽתְקַדְּרוּ֙ עָבִ֣ים וְר֔וּחַ וַיְהִ֖י גֶּ֣שֶׁם גָּד֑וֹל וַיִּרְכַּ֥ב אַחְאָ֖ב וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃

BAN ⁴⁶ Et la main de l'Eternel était sur Elie, et il ceignit ses reins et il courut devant Achab jusqu'à l'entrée de Jizréel.

KJV ⁴⁶ And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

VULC ⁴⁶ et manus Domini facta est super Eliam, accinctisque lumbis currebat ante Achab, donec veniret in Jezrahel.
