KJV ² And he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.

LSG ² Il avait deux femmes, dont l'une s'appelait Anne, et l'autre Peninna ; Peninna avait des enfants, mais Anne n'en avait point.

VULC ² et habuit duas uxores, nomen uni Anna, et nomen secundæ Phenenna. Fueruntque Phenennæ filii : Annæ autem non erant liberi.

KJV ³ And this man went up out of his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice unto the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there.

LSG ³ Chaque année, cet homme montait de sa ville à Silo, pour se prosterner devant l'Éternel des armées et pour lui offrir des sacrifices. Là se trouvaient les deux fils d'Éli, Hophni et Phinées, sacrificateurs de l'Éternel.

VULC ³ Et ascendebat vir ille de civitate sua statutis diebus, ut adoraret et sacrificaret Domino exercituum in Silo. Erant autem ibi duo filii Heli, Ophni et Phinees, sacerdotes Domini.

KJV ⁴ And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:

LSG ⁴ Le jour où Elkana offrait son sacrifice, il donnait des portions à Peninna, sa femme, et à tous les fils et à toutes les filles qu'il avait d'elle.

VULC ⁴ Venit ergo dies, et immolavit Elcana, deditque Phenennæ uxori suæ, et cunctis filiis ejus et filiabus, partes :

KJV ⁵ But unto Hannah he gave a worthy portion; for he loved Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her womb.

LSG ⁵ Mais il donnait à Anne une portion double ; car il aimait Anne, que l'Éternel avait rendue stérile.

VULC ⁵ Annæ autem dedit partem unam tristis, quia Annam diligebat. Dominus autem concluserat vulvam ejus.

KJV ⁶ And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb.

LSG ⁶ Sa rivale lui prodiguait les mortifications, pour la porter à s'irriter de ce que l'Éternel l'avait rendue stérile.

VULC ⁶ Affligebat quoque eam æmula ejus, et vehementer angebat, in tantum ut exprobraret quod Dominus conclusisset vulvam ejus :

KJV ⁷ And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.

LSG ⁷ Et toutes les années il en était ainsi. Chaque fois qu'Anne montait à la maison de l'Éternel, Peninna la mortifiait de la même manière. Alors elle pleurait et ne mangeait point.

VULC ⁷ sicque faciebat per singulos annos : cum redeunte tempore ascenderent ad templum Domini, et sic provocabat eam : porro illa flebat, et non capiebat cibum.

KJV ⁸ Then said Elkanah her husband to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? am not I better to thee than ten sons?

LSG ⁸ Elkana, son mari, lui disait: Anne, pourquoi pleures-tu, et ne manges-tu pas ? pourquoi ton coeur est-il attristé ? Est-ce que je ne vaux pas pour toi mieux que dix fils ?

VULC ⁸ Dixit ergo ei Elcana vir suus : Anna, cur fles ? et quare non comedis ? et quam ob rem affligitur cor tuum ? numquid non ego melior tibi sum, quam decem filii ?

KJV ⁹ So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest sat upon a seat by a post of the temple of the LORD.

LSG ⁹ Anne se leva, après que l'on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Le sacrificateur Éli était assis sur un siège, près de l'un des poteaux du temple de l'Éternel.

VULC ⁹ Surrexit autem Anna postquam comederat et biberat in Silo. Et Heli sacerdote sedente super sellam ante postes templi Domini,

KJV ¹⁰ And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.

LSG ¹⁰ Et, l'amertume dans l'âme, elle pria l'Éternel et versa des pleurs.

VULC ¹⁰ cum esset Anna amaro animo, oravit ad Dominum, flens largiter,

KJV ¹¹ And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.

LSG ¹¹ Elle fit un voeu, en disant: Éternel des armées ! si tu daignes regarder l'affliction de ta servante, si tu te souviens de moi et n'oublies point ta servante, et si tu donnes à ta servante un enfant mâle, je le consacrerai à l'Éternel pour tous les jours de sa vie, et le rasoir ne passera point sur sa tête.

VULC ¹¹ et votum vovit, dicens : Domine exercituum, si respiciens videris afflictionem famulæ tuæ, et recordatus mei fueris, nec oblitus ancillæ tuæ, dederisque servæ tuæ sexum virilem : dabo eum Domino omnibus diebus vitæ ejus, et novacula non ascendet super caput ejus.

KJV ¹² And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli marked her mouth.

KJV ¹³ Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken.

VULC ¹³ Porro Anna loquebatur in corde suo, tantumque labia illius movebantur, et vox penitus non audiebatur. Æstimavit ergo eam Heli temulentam,

KJV ¹⁴ And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.

LSG ¹⁴ et il lui dit: Jusques à quand seras-tu dans l'ivresse ? Fais passer ton vin.

VULC ¹⁴ dixitque ei : Usquequo ebria eris ? digere paulisper vinum, quo mades.

KJV ¹⁵ And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

LSG ¹⁵ Anne répondit: Non, mon seigneur, je suis une femme qui souffre en son coeur, et je n'ai bu ni vin ni boisson enivrante ; mais je répandais mon âme devant l'Éternel.

VULC ¹⁵ Respondens Anna : Nequaquam, inquit, domine mi : nam mulier infelix nimis ego sum : vinumque et omne quod inebriare potest, non bibi, sed effudi animam meam in conspectu Domini.

KJV ¹⁶ Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.

LSG ¹⁶ Ne prends pas ta servante pour une femme pervertie, car c'est l'excès de ma douleur et de mon chagrin qui m'a fait parler jusqu'à présent.

VULC ¹⁶ Ne reputes ancillam tuam quasi unam de filiabus Belial : quia ex multitudine doloris et mœroris mei locuta sum usque in præsens.

KJV ¹⁷ Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him.

LSG ¹⁷ Éli reprit la parole, et dit: Va en paix, et que le Dieu d'Israël exauce la prière que tu lui as adressée !

VULC ¹⁷ Tunc Heli ait ei : Vade in pace : et Deus Israël det tibi petitionem tuam quam rogasti eum.

KJV ¹⁸ And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad.

LSG ¹⁸ Elle dit: Que ta servante trouve grâce à tes yeux ! Et cette femme s'en alla. Elle mangea, et son visage ne fut plus le même.

VULC ¹⁸ Et illa dixit : Utinam inveniat ancilla tua gratiam in oculis tuis. Et abiit mulier in viam suam, et comedit, vultusque illius non sunt amplius in diversa mutati.

KJV ¹⁹ And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the LORD, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the LORD remembered her.

LSG ¹⁹ Ils se levèrent de bon matin, et après s'être prosternés devant l'Éternel, ils s'en retournèrent et revinrent dans leur maison à Rama. Elkana connut Anne, sa femme, et l'Éternel se souvint d'elle.

VULC ¹⁹ Et surrexerunt mane, et adoraverunt coram Domino : reversique sunt, et venerunt in domum suam Ramatha.
Cognovit autem Elcana Annam uxorem suam : et recordatus est ejus Dominus.

KJV ²⁰ Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.

LSG ²⁰ Dans le cours de l'année, Anne devint enceinte, et elle enfanta un fils, qu'elle nomma Samuel, car, dit-elle, je l'ai demandé à l'Éternel.

VULC ²⁰ Et factum est post circulum dierum, concepit Anna, et peperit filium : vocavitque nomen ejus Samuel, eo quod a Domino postulasset eum.

KJV ²¹ And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer unto the LORD the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.

LSG ²¹ Son mari Elkana monta ensuite avec toute sa maison, pour offrir à l'Éternel le sacrifice annuel, et pour accomplir son voeu.

VULC ²¹ Ascendit autem vir ejus Elcana, et omnis domus ejus, ut immolaret Domino hostiam solemnem, et votum suum.

KJV ²² But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there abide for ever.

LSG ²² Mais Anne ne monta point, et elle dit à son mari: Lorsque l'enfant sera sevré, je le mènerai, afin qu'il soit présenté devant l'Éternel et qu'il reste là pour toujours.

VULC ²² Et Anna non ascendit : dixit enim viro suo : Non vadam donec ablactetur infans, et ducam eum, ut appareat ante conspectum Domini, et maneat ibi jugiter.

KJV ²³ And Elkanah her husband said unto her, Do what seemeth thee good; tarry until thou have weaned him; only the LORD establish his word. So the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.

LSG ²³ Elkana, son mari, lui dit: Fais ce qui te semblera bon, attends de l'avoir sevré. Veuille seulement l'Éternel accomplir sa parole ! Et la femme resta et allaita son fils, jusqu'à ce qu'elle le sevrât.

VULC ²³ Et ait ei Elcana vir suus : Fac quod bonum tibi videtur, et mane donec ablactes eum : precorque ut impleat Dominus verbum suum. Mansit ergo mulier, et lactavit filium suum, donec amoveret eum a lacte.

KJV ²⁴ And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.

LSG ²⁴ Quand elle l'eut sevré, elle le fit monter avec elle, et prit trois taureaux, un épha de farine, et une outre de vin. Elle le mena dans la maison de l'Éternel à Silo: l'enfant était encore tout jeune.

VULC ²⁴ Et adduxit eum secum, postquam ablactaverat, in vitulis tribus, et tribus modiis farinæ, et amphora vini, et adduxit eum ad domum Domini in Silo. Puer autem erat adhuc infantulus :

KJV ²⁵ And they slew a bullock, and brought the child to Eli.

LSG ²⁵ Ils égorgèrent les taureaux, et ils conduisirent l'enfant à Éli.

VULC ²⁵ et immolaverunt vitulum, et obtulerunt puerum Heli.

KJV ²⁶ And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD.

LSG ²⁶ Anne dit: Mon seigneur, pardon ! aussi vrai que ton âme vit, mon seigneur, je suis cette femme qui me tenais ici près de toi pour prier l'Éternel.

VULC ²⁶ Et ait Anna : Obsecro mi domine, vivit anima tua, domine : ego sum illa mulier, quæ steti coram te hic orans Dominum.

KJV ²⁷ For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:

LSG ²⁷ C'était pour cet enfant que je priais, et l'Éternel a exaucé la prière que je lui adressais.

VULC ²⁷ Pro puero isto oravi, et dedit mihi Dominus petitionem meam quam postulavi eum.

KJV ²⁸ Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.

LSG ²⁸ Aussi je veux le prêter à l'Éternel: il sera toute sa vie prêté à l'Éternel. Et ils se prosternèrent là devant l'Éternel.

VULC ²⁸ Idcirco et ego commodavi eum Domino cunctis diebus quibus fuerit commodatus Domino. Et adoraverunt ibi Dominum.
