KJV ¹ Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

VULC ¹ Tulit autem Samuel lenticulam olei, et effudit super caput ejus : et deosculatus est eum, et ait : Ecce unxit te Dominus super hæreditatem suam in principem, et liberabis populum suum de manibus inimicorum ejus qui in circuitu ejus sunt. Et hoc tibi signum, quia unxit te Deus in principem.

KJV ² When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

S21 ² Aujourd'hui, après m'avoir quitté, tu trouveras deux hommes près du tombeau de Rachel, sur la frontière de Benjamin, à Tseltsach. Ils te diront: ‘Les ânesses à la recherche desquelles tu es allé sont retrouvées. Maintenant ton père ne pense plus aux ânesses, mais il s'inquiète pour vous, il dit: Que dois-je faire au sujet de mon fils?'

VULC ² Cum abieris hodie a me, invenies duos viros juxta sepulchrum Rachel in finibus Benjamin, in meridie : dicentque tibi : Inventæ sunt asinæ ad quas ieras perquirendas : et intermissis pater tuus asinis, sollicitus est pro vobis, et dicit : Quid faciam de filio meo ?

KJV ³ Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

S21 ³ De là tu iras plus loin et tu arriveras au chêne de Thabor, où tu rencontreras trois hommes en train de monter vers Dieu à Béthel. Ils portent l'un 3 chevreaux, l'autre 3 gâteaux de pain et l'autre une outre de vin.

VULC ³ Cumque abieris inde, et ultra transieris, et veneris ad quercum Thabor, invenient te ibi tres viri ascendentes ad Deum in Bethel, unus portans tres hædos, et alius tres tortas panis, et alius portans lagenam vini.

KJV ⁴ And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

S21 ⁴ Ils te demanderont comment tu vas et te donneront deux pains. Tu les accepteras de leur part.

VULC ⁴ Cumque te salutaverint, dabunt tibi duos panes, et accipies de manu eorum.

WLC ⁴ וְשָׁאֲל֥וּ לְךָ֖ לְשָׁל֑וֹם וְנָתְנ֤וּ לְךָ֙ שְׁתֵּי־ לֶ֔חֶם וְלָקַחְתָּ֖ מִיָּדָֽם׃

KJV ⁵ After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

S21 ⁵ Après cela, tu arriveras à Guibea-Elohim, où se trouve une garnison de Philistins. En entrant dans la ville, tu rencontreras une troupe de prophètes qui descendent du haut lieu, précédés du luth, du tambourin, de la flûte et de la harpe, et qui prophétisent.

VULC ⁵ Post hæc venies in collem Dei, ubi est statio Philisthinorum : et cum ingressus fueris ibi urbem, obvium habebis gregem prophetarum descendentium de excelso, et ante eos psalterium, et tympanum, et tibiam, et citharam, ipsosque prophetantes.

KJV ⁶ And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

S21 ⁶ L'Esprit de l'Eternel viendra sur toi; tu prophétiseras avec eux et tu deviendras un autre homme.

VULC ⁶ Et insiliet in te spiritus Domini, et prophetabis cum eis, et mutaberis in virum alium.

KJV ⁷ And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

S21 ⁷ Lorsque ces signes se seront réalisés pour toi, fais ce que tu trouveras à faire, car Dieu est avec toi.

VULC ⁷ Quando ergo evenerint signa hæc omnia tibi, fac quæcumque invenerit manus tua, quia Dominus tecum est.

WLC ⁷ וְהָיָ֗ה כִּ֥י הָאֹת֥וֹת הָאֵ֖לֶּה לָ֑ךְ עֲשֵׂ֤ה לְךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּמְצָ֣א יָדֶ֔ךָ כִּ֥י הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים עִמָּֽךְ׃

KJV ⁸ And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.

S21 ⁸ Puis tu descendras avant moi à Guilgal. Je descendrai vers toi pour offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. Tu attendras 7 jours, jusqu'à ce que j'arrive vers toi et que je te dise ce que tu dois faire.»

VULC ⁸ Et descendes ante me in Galgala (ego quippe descendam ad te), ut offeras oblationem, et immoles victimas pacificas : septem diebus expectabis, donec veniam ad te, et ostendam tibi quid facias.

WLC ⁸ וְיָרַדְתָּ֣ לְפָנַי֮ הַגִּלְגָּל֒ וְהִנֵּ֤ה אָֽנֹכִי֙ יֹרֵ֣ד אֵלֶ֔יךָ לְהַעֲל֣וֹת עֹל֔וֹת לִזְבֹּ֖חַ זִבְחֵ֣י שְׁלָמִ֑ים שִׁבְעַ֨ת יָמִ֤ים תּוֹחֵל֙ עַד־ בּוֹאִ֣י אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְהוֹדַעְתִּ֣י לְךָ֔ אֵ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃

KJV ⁹ And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

S21 ⁹ Dès que Saül eut tourné le dos pour se séparer de Samuel, Dieu lui donna un autre cœur et tous ces signes se réalisèrent le même jour.

VULC ⁹ Itaque cum avertisset humerum suum ut abiret a Samuele, immutavit ei Deus cor aliud, et venerunt omnia signa hæc in die illa.

WLC ⁹ וְהָיָ֗ה כְּהַפְנֹת֤וֹ שִׁכְמוֹ֙ לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ מֵעִ֣ם שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיַּהֲפָךְ־ ל֥וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵ֣ב אַחֵ֑ר וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ כָּל־ הָאֹת֥וֹת הָאֵ֖לֶּה בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃

KJV ¹⁰ And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

S21 ¹⁰ Lorsqu'ils arrivèrent à Guibea, une troupe de prophètes vint à sa rencontre. L'Esprit de Dieu vint sur lui et il prophétisa au milieu d'eux.

VULC ¹⁰ Veneruntque ad prædictum collem, et ecce cuneus prophetarum obvius ei : et insiluit super eum spiritus Domini, et prophetavit in medio eorum.

KJV ¹¹ And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

S21 ¹¹ Tous ceux qui l'avaient connu auparavant virent qu'il prophétisait avec les prophètes, et les membres du peuple se disaient l'un à l'autre: «Qu'est-il arrivé au fils de Kis? Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes?»

VULC ¹¹ Videntes autem omnes qui noverant eum heri et nudiustertius quod esset cum prophetis, et prophetaret, dixerunt ad invicem : Quænam res accidit filio Cis ? num et Saul inter prophetas ?

WLC ¹¹ וַיְהִ֗י כָּל־ יֽוֹדְעוֹ֙ מֵאִתְּמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשׁ֔וֹם וַיִּרְא֕וּ וְהִנֵּ֥ה עִם־ נְבִאִ֖ים נִבָּ֑א וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הָעָ֜ם אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־ רֵעֵ֗הוּ מַה־ זֶּה֙ הָיָ֣ה לְבֶן־ קִ֔ישׁ הֲגַ֥ם שָׁא֖וּל בַּנְּבִיאִֽים׃

KJV ¹² And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

S21 ¹² Quelqu'un de Guibea ajouta: «Et qui est leur père?» De là vient le proverbe: «Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes?»

VULC ¹² Responditque alius ad alterum, dicens : Et quis pater eorum ? Propterea versum est in proverbium : Num et Saul inter prophetas ?

WLC ¹² וַיַּ֨עַן אִ֥ישׁ מִשָּׁ֛ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר וּמִ֣י אֲבִיהֶ֑ם עַל־ כֵּן֙ הָיְתָ֣ה לְמָשָׁ֔ל הֲגַ֥ם שָׁא֖וּל בַּנְּבִאִֽים׃

KJV ¹³ And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

KJV ¹⁴ And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.

S21 ¹⁴ Son oncle lui demanda, ainsi qu'à son serviteur: «Où êtes-vous allés?» Saül répondit: «A la recherche des ânesses, mais nous ne les avons pas aperçues et nous sommes allés trouver Samuel.»

VULC ¹⁴ Dixitque patruus Saul ad eum, et ad puerum ejus : Quo abistis ? Qui responderunt : Quærere asinas : quas cum non reperissemus, venimus ad Samuelem.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ דּ֨וֹד שָׁא֥וּל אֵלָ֛יו וְאֶֽל־ נַעֲר֖וֹ אָ֣ן הֲלַכְתֶּ֑ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לְבַקֵּשׁ֙ אֶת־ הָ֣אֲתֹנ֔וֹת וַנִּרְאֶ֣ה כִי־ אַ֔יִן וַנָּב֖וֹא אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁵ And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

S21 ¹⁵ L'oncle de Saül reprit: «Raconte-moi donc ce que vous a dit Samuel.»

VULC ¹⁵ Et dixit ei patruus suus : Indica mihi quid dixerit tibi Samuel.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דּ֣וֹד שָׁא֑וּל הַגִּֽידָה־ נָּ֣א לִ֔י מָֽה־ אָמַ֥ר לָכֶ֖ם שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁶ And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

S21 ¹⁶ Saül répondit à son oncle: «Il nous a assuré que les ânesses étaient retrouvées.» Il ne lui dit rien de la royauté dont avait parlé Samuel.

VULC ¹⁶ Et ait Saul ad patruum suum : Indicavit nobis quia inventæ essent asinæ. De sermone autem regni non indicavit ei quem locutus fuerat ei Samuel.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־ דּוֹד֔וֹ הַגֵּ֤ד הִגִּיד֙ לָ֔נוּ כִּ֥י נִמְצְא֖וּ הָאֲתֹנ֑וֹת וְאֶת־ דְּבַ֤ר הַמְּלוּכָה֙ לֹֽא־ הִגִּ֣יד ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֥ר שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁷ And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;

KJV ¹⁸ And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

S21 ¹⁸ Il annonça aux Israélites: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël: C'est moi qui ai fait sortir Israël d'Egypte, qui vous ai délivrés de la domination des Egyptiens et de tous les royaumes qui vous opprimaient.

VULC ¹⁸ et ait ad filios Israël : Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël : Ego eduxi Israël de Ægypto, et erui vos de manu Ægyptiorum, et de manu omnium regum qui affligebant vos.

KJV ¹⁹ And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.

S21 ¹⁹ Et aujourd'hui, vous rejetez votre Dieu, celui qui vous a délivrés de tous vos maux et de toutes vos souffrances, et vous lui dites: ‘Etablis un roi sur nous!' Présentez-vous maintenant devant l'Eternel par tribus et par milliers.»

VULC ¹⁹ Vos autem hodie projecistis Deum vestrum, qui solus salvavit vos de universis malis et tribulationibus vestris : et dixistis : Nequaquam : sed regem constitue super nos. Nunc ergo state coram Domino per tribus vestras, et per familias.

KJV ²⁰ And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

S21 ²⁰ Samuel fit approcher toutes les tribus d'Israël, et la tribu de Benjamin fut désignée.

VULC ²⁰ Et applicuit Samuel omnes tribus Israël, et cecidit sors tribus Benjamin.

WLC ²⁰ וַיַּקְרֵ֣ב שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כָּל־ שִׁבְטֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּלָּכֵ֖ד שֵׁ֥בֶט בִּנְיָמִֽן׃

KJV ²¹ When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.

S21 ²¹ Il fit approcher la tribu de Benjamin clan par clan, et le clan de Matri fut désigné. Puis Saül, fils de Kis, fut désigné. On le chercha, mais on ne le trouva pas.

VULC ²¹ Et applicuit tribum Benjamin et cognationes ejus, et cecidit cognatio Metri : et pervenit usque ad Saul filium Cis. Quæsierunt ergo eum, et non est inventus.

WLC ²¹ וַיַּקְרֵ֞ב אֶת־ שֵׁ֤בֶט בִּנְיָמִן֙ וַתִּלָּכֵ֖ד מִשְׁפַּ֣חַת הַמַּטְרִ֑י וַיִּלָּכֵד֙ שָׁא֣וּל בֶּן־ קִ֔ישׁ וַיְבַקְשֻׁ֖הוּ וְלֹ֥א נִמְצָֽא׃

KJV ²² Therefore they enquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff.

S21 ²² On consulta de nouveau l'Eternel en demandant: «Y a-t-il encore un homme qui soit venu ici?» L'Eternel dit: «Il est caché vers les bagages.»

VULC ²² Et consuluerunt post hæc Dominum utrumnam venturus esset illuc. Responditque Dominus : Ecce absconditus est domi.

WLC ²² וַיִּשְׁאֲלוּ־ עוֹד֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה הֲבָ֥א ע֖וֹד הֲלֹ֣ם אִ֑ישׁ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֔ה הִנֵּה־ ה֥וּא נֶחְבָּ֖א אֶל־ הַכֵּלִֽים׃

KJV ²³ And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

S21 ²³ On courut le tirer de là et il se présenta au milieu du peuple. Il les dépassait tous d'une tête.

VULC ²³ Cucurrerunt itaque et tulerunt eum inde : stetitque in medio populi, et altior fuit universo populo ab humero et sursum.

WLC ²³ וַיָּרֻ֙צוּ֙ וַיִּקָּחֻ֣הוּ מִשָּׁ֔ם וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֖ב בְּת֣וֹךְ הָעָ֑ם וַיִּגְבַּהּ֙ מִכָּל־ הָעָ֔ם מִשִּׁכְמ֖וֹ וָמָֽעְלָה׃

KJV ²⁴ And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

S21 ²⁴ Samuel dit à tout le peuple: «Voyez-vous celui que l'Eternel a choisi? Il n'y a personne dans tout le peuple qui soit pareil à lui.» Et tout le peuple cria: «Vive le roi!»

VULC ²⁴ Et ait Samuel ad omnem populum : Certe videtis quem elegit Dominus, quoniam non sit similis illi in omni populo. Et clamavit omnis populus, et ait : Vivat rex.

WLC ²⁴ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל אֶל־ כָּל־ הָעָ֗ם הַרְּאִיתֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּֽחַר־ בּ֣וֹ יְהוָ֔ה כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין כָּמֹ֖הוּ בְּכָל־ הָעָ֑ם וַיָּרִ֧עוּ כָל־ הָעָ֛ם וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יְחִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

KJV ²⁵ Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

S21 ²⁵ Samuel fit alors connaître au peuple le droit relatif à la royauté, et il l'écrivit dans un livre qu'il déposa devant l'Eternel. Puis il renvoya tout le peuple, chacun chez soi.

VULC ²⁵ Locutus est autem Samuel ad populum legem regni, et scripsit in libro, et reposuit coram Domino : et dimisit Samuel omnem populum, singulos in domum suam.

KJV ²⁶ And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.

S21 ²⁶ Saül aussi alla chez lui à Guibea, accompagné des hommes de valeur dont Dieu avait touché le cœur.

VULC ²⁶ Sed et Saul abiit in domum suam in Gabaa : et abiit cum eo pars exercitus, quorum tetigerat Deus corda.

WLC ²⁶ וְגַ֨ם־ שָׁא֔וּל הָלַ֥ךְ לְבֵית֖וֹ גִּבְעָ֑תָה וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ עִמּ֔וֹ הַחַ֕יִל אֲשֶׁר־ נָגַ֥ע אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּלִבָּֽם׃

KJV ²⁷ But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

S21 ²⁷ Il y eut toutefois des vauriens qui dirent: «Quoi! C'est celui-ci qui nous sauvera!» Ils le méprisèrent et ne lui apportèrent aucun cadeau, mais Saül n'y prêta pas attention.

VULC ²⁷ Filii vero Belial dixerunt : Num salvare nos poterit iste ? Et despexerunt eum, et non attulerunt ei munera : ille vero dissimulabat se audire.
