KJV ¹ Then Nahash the Ammonite came up, and encamped against Jabeshgilead: and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve thee.

WLC ¹ וַיַּ֗עַל נָחָשׁ֙ הָֽעַמּוֹנִ֔י וַיִּ֖חַן עַל־ יָבֵ֣שׁ גִּלְעָ֑ד וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ כָּל־ אַנְשֵׁ֤י יָבֵישׁ֙ אֶל־ נָחָ֔שׁ כְּרָת־ לָ֥נוּ בְרִ֖ית וְנַעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃

KJV ² And Nahash the Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel.

LSG ² Mais Nachasch, l'Ammonite, leur répondit: Je traiterai avec vous à la condition que je vous crève à tous l'oeil droit, et que j'imprime ainsi un opprobre sur tout Israël.

VULC ² Et respondit ad eos Naas Ammonites : In hoc feriam vobiscum fœdus, ut eruam omnium vestrum oculos dextros, ponamque vos opprobrium in universo Israël.

WLC ² וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם נָחָשׁ֙ הָעַמּוֹנִ֔י בְּזֹאת֙ אֶכְרֹ֣ת לָכֶ֔ם בִּנְק֥וֹר לָכֶ֖ם כָּל־ עֵ֣ין יָמִ֑ין וְשַׂמְתִּ֥יהָ חֶרְפָּ֖ה עַל־ כָּל־ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJV ³ And the elders of Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days' respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.

LSG ³ Les anciens de Jabès lui dirent: Accorde-nous une trêve de sept jours, afin que nous envoyions des messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël ; et s'il n'y a personne qui nous secoure, nous nous rendrons à toi.

VULC ³ Et dixerunt ad eum seniores Jabes : Concede nobis septem dies, ut mittamus nuntios ad universos terminos Israël, et si non fuerit qui defendat nos, egrediemur ad te.

WLC ³ וַיֹּאמְר֨וּ אֵלָ֜יו זִקְנֵ֣י יָבֵ֗ישׁ הֶ֤רֶף לָ֙נוּ֙ שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֔ים וְנִשְׁלְחָה֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים בְּכֹ֖ל גְּב֣וּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְאִם־ אֵ֥ין מוֹשִׁ֛יעַ אֹתָ֖נוּ וְיָצָ֥אנוּ אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

KJV ⁴ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul, and told the tidings in the ears of the people: and all the people lifted up their voices, and wept.

LSG ⁴ Les messagers arrivèrent à Guibea de Saül, et dirent ces choses aux oreilles du peuple. Et tout le peuple éleva la voix, et pleura.

VULC ⁴ Venerunt ergo nuntii in Gabaa Saulis : et locuti sunt verba hæc, audiente populo : et levavit omnis populus vocem suam, et flevit.

WLC ⁴ וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ הַמַּלְאָכִים֙ גִּבְעַ֣ת שָׁא֔וּל וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיִּשְׂא֧וּ כָל־ הָעָ֛ם אֶת־ קוֹלָ֖ם וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃

KJV ⁵ And, behold, Saul came after the herd out of the field; and Saul said, What aileth the people that they weep? And they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh.

LSG ⁵ Et voici, Saül revenait des champs, derrière ses boeufs, et il dit: Qu'a donc le peuple pour pleurer ? On lui raconta ce qu'avaient dit ceux de Jabès.

VULC ⁵ Et ecce Saul veniebat, sequens boves de agro, et ait : Quid habet populus quod plorat ? Et narraverunt ei verba virorum Jabes.

WLC ⁵ וְהִנֵּ֣ה שָׁא֗וּל בָּ֣א אַחֲרֵ֤י הַבָּקָר֙ מִן־ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל מַה־ לָּעָ֖ם כִּ֣י יִבְכּ֑וּ וַיְסַ֨פְּרוּ־ ל֔וֹ אֶת־ דִּבְרֵ֖י אַנְשֵׁ֥י יָבֵֽישׁ׃

KJV ⁶ And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly.

LSG ⁶ Dès que Saül eut entendu ces choses, il fut saisi par l'esprit de Dieu, et sa colère s'enflamma fortement.

VULC ⁶ Et insilivit spiritus Domini in Saul cum audisset verba hæc, et iratus est furor ejus nimis.

WLC ⁶ וַתִּצְלַ֤ח רֽוּחַ־ אֱלֹהִים֙ עַל־ שָׁא֔וּל אֶת־ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַיִּ֥חַר אַפּ֖וֹ מְאֹֽד׃

KJV ⁷ And he took a yoke of oxen, and hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying, Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.

LSG ⁷ Il prit une paire de boeufs, et les coupa en morceaux, qu'il envoya par les messagers dans tout le territoire d'Israël, en disant: Quiconque ne marchera pas à la suite de Saül et de Samuel, aura ses boeufs traités de la même manière. La terreur de l'Éternel s'empara du peuple, qui se mit en marche comme un seul homme.

VULC ⁷ Et assumens utrumque bovem, concidit in frusta, misitque in omnes terminos Israël per manum nuntiorum, dicens : Quicumque non exierit, et secutus fuerit Saul et Samuel, sic fiet bobus ejus. Invasit ergo timor Domini populum, et egressi sunt quasi vir unus.

WLC ⁷ וַיִּקַּח֩ צֶ֨מֶד בָּקָ֜ר וַֽיְנַתְּחֵ֗הוּ וַיְשַׁלַּ֞ח בְּכָל־ גְּב֣וּל יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ בְּיַ֣ד הַמַּלְאָכִ֣ים ׀ לֵאמֹר֒ אֲשֶׁר֩ אֵינֶ֨נּוּ יֹצֵ֜א אַחֲרֵ֤י שָׁאוּל֙ וְאַחַ֣ר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כֹּ֥ה יֵעָשֶׂ֖ה לִבְקָר֑וֹ וַיִּפֹּ֤ל פַּֽחַד־ יְהוָה֙ עַל־ הָעָ֔ם וַיֵּצְא֖וּ כְּאִ֥ישׁ אֶחָֽד׃

KJV ⁸ And when he numbered them in Bezek, the children of Israel were three hundred thousand, and the men of Judah thirty thousand.

LSG ⁸ Saül en fit la revue à Bézek ; les enfants d'Israël étaient trois cent mille, et les hommes de Juda trente mille.

VULC ⁸ Et recensuit eos in Bezech : fueruntque filiorum Israël trecenta millia, virorum autem Juda triginta millia.

WLC ⁸ וַֽיִּפְקְדֵ֖ם בְּבָ֑זֶק וַיִּהְי֤וּ בְנֵֽי־ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֶ֔לֶף וְאִ֥ישׁ יְהוּדָ֖ה שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אָֽלֶף׃

KJV ⁹ And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabeshgilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.

LSG ⁹ Ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: Vous parlerez ainsi aux habitants de Jabès en Galaad: Demain vous aurez du secours, quand le soleil sera dans sa chaleur. Les messagers portèrent cette nouvelle à ceux de Jabès, qui furent remplis de joie ;

VULC ⁹ Et dixerunt nuntiis qui venerant : Sic dicetis viris qui sunt in Jabes Galaad : Cras erit vobis salus, cum incaluerit sol. Venerunt ergo nuntii, et annuntiaverunt viris Jabes : qui lætati sunt.

KJV ¹⁰ Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.

KJV ¹¹ And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

LSG ¹¹ Le lendemain, Saül divisa le peuple en trois corps. Ils pénétrèrent dans le camp des Ammonites à la veille du matin, et ils les battirent jusqu'à la chaleur du jour. Ceux qui échappèrent furent dispersés, et il n'en resta pas deux ensemble.

VULC ¹¹ Et factum est, cum dies crastinus venisset, constituit Saul populum in tres partes : et ingressus est media castra in vigilia matutina, et percussit Ammon usque dum incalesceret dies : reliqui autem dispersi sunt, ita ut non relinquerentur in eis duo pariter.

WLC ¹¹ וַיְהִ֣י מִֽמָּחֳרָ֗ת וַיָּ֨שֶׂם שָׁא֣וּל אֶת־ הָעָם֮ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁים֒ וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ בְתוֹךְ־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֙ בְּאַשְׁמֹ֣רֶת הַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיַּכּ֥וּ אֶת־ עַמּ֖וֹן עַד־ חֹ֣ם הַיּ֑וֹם וַיְהִ֤י הַנִּשְׁאָרִים֙ וַיָּפֻ֔צוּ וְלֹ֥א נִשְׁאֲרוּ־ בָ֖ם שְׁנַ֥יִם יָֽחַד׃

KJV ¹² And the people said unto Samuel, Who is he that said, Shall Saul reign over us? bring the men, that we may put them to death.

LSG ¹² Le peuple dit à Samuel: Qui est-ce qui disait: Saül régnera-t-il sur nous ? Livrez ces gens, et nous les ferons mourir.

VULC ¹² Et ait populus ad Samuelem : Quis est iste qui dixit : Saul num regnabit super nos ? Date viros, et interficiemus eos.

WLC ¹² וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הָעָם֙ אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל מִ֣י הָאֹמֵ֔ר שָׁא֖וּל יִמְלֹ֣ךְ עָלֵ֑ינוּ תְּנ֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים וּנְמִיתֵֽם׃

KJV ¹³ And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.

WLC ¹³ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל לֹֽא־ יוּמַ֥ת אִ֖ישׁ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֥י הַיּ֛וֹם עָשָֽׂה־ יְהוָ֥ה תְּשׁוּעָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁴ Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

VULC ¹⁴ Dixit autem Samuel ad populum : Venite, et eamus in Galgala, et innovemus ibi regnum.

KJV ¹⁵ And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal; and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace offerings before the LORD; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.

LSG ¹⁵ Tout le peuple se rendit à Guilgal, et ils établirent Saül pour roi, devant l'Éternel, à Guilgal. Là, ils offrirent des sacrifices d'actions de grâces devant l'Éternel ; et là, Saül et tous les hommes d'Israël se livrèrent à de grandes réjouissances.

VULC ¹⁵ Et perrexit omnis populus in Galgala, et fecerunt ibi regem Saul coram Domino in Galgala, et immolaverunt ibi victimas pacificas coram Domino. Et lætatus est ibi Saul, et cuncti viri Israël nimis.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֵּלְכ֨וּ כָל־ הָעָ֜ם הַגִּלְגָּ֗ל וַיַּמְלִכוּ֩ שָׁ֨ם אֶת־ שָׁא֜וּל לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ בַּגִּלְגָּ֔ל וַיִּזְבְּחוּ־ שָׁ֛ם זְבָחִ֥ים שְׁלָמִ֖ים לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּשְׂמַ֨ח שָׁ֥ם שָׁא֛וּל וְכָל־ אַנְשֵׁ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַד־ מְאֹֽד׃
