KJV ¹ Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.

MAR ¹ Or il arriva que Jonathan, fils de Saül, dit un jour au garçon qui portait ses armes : Viens et passons vers le corps de garde des Philistins qui est au delà de ce lieu-là ; mais il ne le déclara point à son père.

VULC ¹ Et accidit quadam die ut diceret Jonathas filius Saul ad adolescentem armigerum suum : Veni, et transeamus ad stationem Philisthinorum, quæ est trans locum illum. Patri autem suo hoc ipsum non indicavit.

WLC ¹ וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֗וֹם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹנָתָ֤ן בֶּן־ שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־ הַנַּ֙עַר֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֔יו לְכָ֗ה וְנַעְבְּרָה֙ אֶל־ מַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַלָּ֑ז וּלְאָבִ֖יו לֹ֥א הִגִּֽיד׃

KJV ² And Saul tarried in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree which is in Migron: and the people that were with him were about six hundred men;

KJV ³ And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.

LSG ³ Achija, fils d'Achithub, frère d'I Kabod, fils de Phinées, fils d'Éli, sacrificateur de l'Éternel à Silo, portait l'éphod. Le peuple ne savait pas que Jonathan s'en fût allé.

KJV ⁴ And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.

LSG ⁴ Entre les passages par lesquels Jonathan cherchait à arriver au poste des Philistins, il y avait une dent de rocher d'un côté et une dent de rocher de l'autre côté, l'une portant le nom de Botsets et l'autre celui de Séné.

VULC ⁴ Erant autem inter ascensus per quos nitebatur Jonathas transire ad stationem Philisthinorum, eminentes petræ ex utraque parte, et quasi in modum dentium scopuli hinc et inde prærupti : nomen uni Boses, et nomen alteri Sene :

WLC ⁴ וּבֵ֣ין הַֽמַּעְבְּר֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֨ר בִּקֵּ֤שׁ יֽוֹנָתָן֙ לַֽעֲבֹר֙ עַל־ מַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים שֵׁן־ הַסֶּ֤לַע מֵהָעֵ֙בֶר֙ מִזֶּ֔ה וְשֵׁן־ הַסֶּ֥לַע מֵהָעֵ֖בֶר מִזֶּ֑ה וְשֵׁ֤ם הָֽאֶחָד֙ בּוֹצֵ֔ץ וְשֵׁ֥ם הָאֶחָ֖ד סֶֽנֶּה׃

KJV ⁵ The forefront of the one was situate northward over against Michmash, and the other southward over against Gibeah.

WLC ⁵ הַשֵּׁ֧ן הָאֶחָ֛ד מָצ֥וּק מִצָּפ֖וֹן מ֣וּל מִכְמָ֑שׂ וְהָאֶחָ֥ד מִנֶּ֖גֶב מ֥וּל גָּֽבַע׃

KJV ⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

LSG ⁶ Jonathan dit au jeune homme qui portait ses armes: Viens, et poussons jusqu'au poste de ces incirconcis. Peut-être l'Éternel agira-t-il pour nous, car rien n'empêche l'Éternel de sauver au moyen d'un petit nombre comme d'un grand nombre.

MAR ⁶ Et Jonathan dit au garçon qui portait ses armes : Viens, passons au corps de garde de ces incirconcis ; peut-être que l'Eternel opérera pour nous : car on ne saurait empêcher l'Eternel de délivrer avec beaucoup ou avec peu de gens.

VULC ⁶ Dixit autem Jonathas ad adolescentem armigerum suum : Veni, transeamus ad stationem incircumcisorum horum, si forte faciat Dominus pro nobis : quia non est Domino difficile salvare, vel in multis, vel in paucis.

WLC ⁶ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן אֶל־ הַנַּ֣עַר ׀ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו לְכָה֙ וְנַעְבְּרָ֗ה אֶל־ מַצַּב֙ הָעֲרֵלִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אוּלַ֛י יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה לָ֑נוּ כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין לַֽיהוָה֙ מַעְצ֔וֹר לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ בְּרַ֖ב א֥וֹ בִמְעָֽט׃

KJV ⁷ And his armourbearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine heart: turn thee; behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

LSG ⁷ Celui qui portait ses armes lui répondit: Fais tout ce que tu as dans le coeur, n'écoute que ton sentiment, me voici avec toi prêt à te suivre.

MAR ⁷ Et celui qui portait ses armes lui dit : Fais tout ce que tu as au coeur, vas-y ; voici je serai avec toi où tu voudras.

VULC ⁷ Dixitque ei armiger suus : Fac omnia quæ placent animo tuo : perge quo cupis, et ero tecum ubicumque volueris.

WLC ⁷ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֔יו עֲשֵׂ֖ה כָּל־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ נְטֵ֣ה לָ֔ךְ הִנְנִ֥י עִמְּךָ֖ כִּלְבָבֶֽךָ׃

KJV ⁸ Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.

LSG ⁸ Hé bien ! dit Jonathan, allons à ces gens et montrons-nous à eux.

MAR ⁸ Et Jonathan lui dit : Voici nous allons passer vers ces gens, et nous nous montrerons à eux.

VULC ⁸ Et ait Jonathas : Ecce nos transimus ad viros istos. Cumque apparuerimus eis,

WLC ⁸ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ עֹבְרִ֖ים אֶל־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְנִגְלִ֖ינוּ אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV ⁹ If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto them.

LSG ⁹ S'ils nous disent: Arrêtez, jusqu'à ce que nous venions à vous ! nous resterons en place, et nous ne monterons point vers eux.

MAR ⁹ S'ils nous disent ainsi : Attendez jusqu'à ce que nous soyons venus à vous, alors nous nous arrêterons à notre place, et nous ne monterons point vers eux.

VULC ⁹ si taliter locuti fuerint ad nos : Manete donec veniamus ad vos : stemus in loco nostro, nec ascendamus ad eos.

WLC ⁹ אִם־ כֹּ֤ה יֹֽאמְרוּ֙ אֵלֵ֔ינוּ דֹּ֕מּוּ עַד־ הַגִּיעֵ֖נוּ אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְעָמַ֣דְנוּ תַחְתֵּ֔ינוּ וְלֹ֥א נַעֲלֶ֖ה אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV ¹⁰ But if they say thus, Come up unto us; then we will go up: for the LORD hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be a sign unto us.

LSG ¹⁰ Mais s'ils disent: Montez vers nous ! nous monterons, car l'Éternel les livre entre nos mains. C'est là ce qui nous servira de signe.

MAR ¹⁰ Mais s'ils disent ainsi : Montez vers nous, alors nous monterons ; car l'Eternel les aura livrés entre nos mains. Que cela nous soit pour signe.

VULC ¹⁰ Si autem dixerint : Ascendite ad nos : ascendamus, quia tradidit eos Dominus in manibus nostris : hoc erit nobis signum.

WLC ¹⁰ וְאִם־ כֹּ֨ה יֹאמְר֜וּ עֲל֤וּ עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ וְעָלִ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־ נְתָנָ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה בְּיָדֵ֑נוּ וְזֶה־ לָּ֖נוּ הָאֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹¹ And both of them discovered themselves unto the garrison of the Philistines: and the Philistines said, Behold, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves.

KJV ¹² And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan and his armourbearer, and said, Come up to us, and we will shew you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armourbearer, Come up after me: for the LORD hath delivered them into the hand of Israel.

LSG ¹² Et les hommes du poste s'adressèrent ainsi à Jonathan et à celui qui portait ses armes: Montez vers nous, et nous vous ferons savoir quelque chose. Jonathan dit à celui qui portait ses armes: Monte après moi, car l'Éternel les livre entre les mains d'Israël.

MAR ¹² Et ceux du corps de garde dirent à Jonathan, et à celui qui portait ses armes : Montez vers nous, et nous vous montrerons quelque chose. Et Jonathan dit à celui qui portait ses armes : Monte après moi ; car l'Eternel les a livrés entre les mains d'Israël.

VULC ¹² Et locuti sunt viri de statione ad Jonathan et ad armigerum ejus, dixeruntque : Ascendite ad nos, et ostendemus vobis rem. Et ait Jonathas ad armigerum suum : Ascendamus : sequere me : tradidit enim Dominus eos in manus Israël.

KJV ¹³ And Jonathan climbed up upon his hands and upon his feet, and his armourbearer after him: and they fell before Jonathan; and his armourbearer slew after him.

LSG ¹³ Et Jonathan monta en s'aidant des mains et des pieds, et celui qui portait ses armes le suivit. Les Philistins tombèrent devant Jonathan, et celui qui portait ses armes donnait la mort derrière lui.

MAR ¹³ Et Jonathan monta [en grimpant] de ses mains et de ses pieds, avec celui qui portait ses armes ; puis ceux du corps de garde tombèrent devant Jonathan, et celui qui portait ses armes les tuait après lui.

VULC ¹³ Ascendit autem Jonathas manibus et pedibus reptans, et armiger ejus post eum. Itaque alii cadebant ante Jonathan, alios armiger ejus interficiebat sequens eum.

WLC ¹³ וַיַּ֣עַל יוֹנָתָ֗ן עַל־ יָדָיו֙ וְעַל־ רַגְלָ֔יו וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָ֖יו אַחֲרָ֑יו וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יוֹנָתָ֔ן וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָ֖יו מְמוֹתֵ֥ת אַחֲרָֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁴ And that first slaughter, which Jonathan and his armourbearer made, was about twenty men, within as it were an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow.

LSG ¹⁴ Dans cette première défaite, Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes tuèrent une vingtaine d'hommes, sur l'espace d'environ la moitié d'un arpent de terre.

MAR ¹⁴ Et cette première défaite que fit Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes, fut d'environ vingt hommes, [qui furent tués dans l'espace] d'environ la moitié d'un arpent de terre.

VULC ¹⁴ Et facta est plaga prima qua percussit Jonathas et armiger ejus, quasi viginti virorum in media parte jugeri quam par boum in die arare consuevit.

WLC ¹⁴ וַתְּהִ֞י הַמַּכָּ֣ה הָרִאשֹׁנָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכָּ֧ה יוֹנָתָ֛ן וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָ֖יו כְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים אִ֑ישׁ כְּבַחֲצִ֥י מַעֲנָ֖ה צֶ֥מֶד שָׂדֶֽה׃

KJV ¹⁵ And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earth quaked: so it was a very great trembling.

LSG ¹⁵ L'effroi se répandit au camp, dans la contrée et parmi tout le peuple ; le poste et ceux qui ravageaient furent également saisis de peur ; le pays fut dans l'épouvante. C'était comme une terreur de Dieu.

MAR ¹⁵ Et il y eut un [grand] effroi au camp, à la campagne, et parmi tout le peuple ; le corps de garde aussi, et ceux qui [étaient allés] ravager, furent effrayés, et le pays fut en trouble, tellement que ce fut comme une frayeur [envoyée] de Dieu.

VULC ¹⁵ Et factum est miraculum in castris per agros : sed et omnis populus stationis eorum qui ierant ad prædandum, obstupuit, et conturbata est terra : et accidit quasi miraculum a Deo.

WLC ¹⁵ וַתְּהִי֩ חֲרָדָ֨ה בַמַּחֲנֶ֤ה בַשָּׂדֶה֙ וּבְכָל־ הָעָ֔ם הַמַּצָּב֙ וְהַמַּשְׁחִ֔ית חָרְד֖וּ גַּם־ הֵ֑מָּה וַתִּרְגַּ֣ז הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתְּהִ֖י לְחֶרְדַּ֥ת אֱלֹהִֽים׃

KJV ¹⁶ And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went on beating down one another.

LSG ¹⁶ Les sentinelles de Saül, qui étaient à Guibea de Benjamin, virent que la multitude se dispersait et allait de côté et d'autre.

MAR ¹⁶ Et les sentinelles de Saül qui étaient à Guibha de Benjamin regardèrent ; et voici, la multitude était en [un si grand] désordre qu'elle se foulait en s'en allant.

VULC ¹⁶ Et respexerunt speculatores Saul qui erant in Gabaa Benjamin, et ecce multitudo prostrata, et huc illucque diffugiens.

WLC ¹⁶ וַיִּרְא֤וּ הַצֹּפִים֙ לְשָׁא֔וּל בְּגִבְעַ֖ת בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וְהִנֵּ֧ה הֶהָמ֛וֹן נָמ֖וֹג וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַהֲלֹֽם׃

KJV ¹⁷ Then said Saul unto the people that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armourbearer were not there.

LSG ¹⁷ Alors Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui: Comptez, je vous prie, et voyez qui s'en est allé du milieu de nous. Ils comptèrent, et voici, il manquait Jonathan et celui qui portait ses armes.

MAR ¹⁷ Alors Saül dit au peuple qui était avec lui : Faites maintenant la revue, et voyez qui s'en est allé d'entre nous. Ils firent donc la revue, et voici Jonathan n'y était point, ni celui qui portait ses armes.

VULC ¹⁷ Et ait Saul populo qui erat cum eo : Requirite, et videte quis abierit ex nobis. Cumque requisissent, repertum est non adesse Jonathan et armigerum ejus.

WLC ¹⁷ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֗וּל לָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ פִּקְדוּ־ נָ֣א וּרְא֔וּ מִ֖י הָלַ֣ךְ מֵעִמָּ֑נוּ וַֽיִּפְקְד֔וּ וְהִנֵּ֛ה אֵ֥ין יוֹנָתָ֖ן וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁸ And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with the children of Israel.

LSG ¹⁸ Et Saül dit à Achija: Fais approcher l'arche de Dieu ! -Car en ce temps l'arche de Dieu était avec les enfants d'Israël.

MAR ¹⁸ Et Saül dit à Ahija : Approche l'Arche de Dieu ; (car l'Arche de Dieu était en ce jour-là avec les enfants d'Israël )

VULC ¹⁸ Et ait Saul ad Achiam : Applica arcam Dei. (Erat enim ibi arca Dei in die illa cum filiis Israël.)

WLC ¹⁸ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ לַֽאֲחִיָּ֔ה הַגִּ֖ישָׁה אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּֽי־ הָיָ֞ה אֲר֧וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וּבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

KJV ¹⁹ And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.

LSG ¹⁹ Pendant que Saül parlait au sacrificateur, le tumulte dans le camp des Philistins allait toujours croissant ; et Saül dit au sacrificateur: Retire ta main !

MAR ¹⁹ Mais il arriva que pendant que Saül parlait au Sacrificateur, le tumulte qui était au camp des Philistins s'augmentait de plus en plus ; et Saül dit au Sacrificateur : Retire ta main.

VULC ¹⁹ Cumque loqueretur Saul ad sacerdotem, tumultus magnus exortus est in castris Philisthinorum : crescebatque paulatim, et clarius resonabat. Et ait Saul ad sacerdotem : Contrahe manum tuam.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיְהִ֗י עַ֣ד דִּבֶּ֤ר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְהֶהָמ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ הָל֖וֹךְ וָרָ֑ב וַיֹּ֧אמֶר שָׁא֛וּל אֶל־ הַכֹּהֵ֖ן אֱסֹ֥ף יָדֶֽךָ׃

KJV ²⁰ And Saul and all the people that were with him assembled themselves, and they came to the battle: and, behold, every man's sword was against his fellow, and there was a very great discomfiture.

LSG ²⁰ Puis Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui se rassemblèrent, et ils s'avancèrent jusqu'au lieu du combat ; et voici, les Philistins tournèrent l'épée les uns contre les autres, et la confusion était extrême.

MAR ²⁰ Et Saül et tout le peuple qui était avec lui, fut assemblé à grand cri ; et ils vinrent jusqu'à la bataille, et voici, les Philistins avaient les épées tirées les uns contre les autres, [et il y avait] un fort grand effroi.

VULC ²⁰ Conclamavit ergo Saul, et omnis populus qui erat cum eo, et venerunt usque ad locum certaminis : et ecce versus fuerat gladius uniuscujusque ad proximum suum, et cædes magna nimis.

WLC ²⁰ וַיִּזָּעֵ֣ק שָׁא֗וּל וְכָל־ הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ עַד־ הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה הָיְתָ֜ה חֶ֤רֶב אִישׁ֙ בְּרֵעֵ֔הוּ מְהוּמָ֖ה גְּדוֹלָ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

KJV ²¹ Moreover the Hebrews that were with the Philistines before that time, which went up with them into the camp from the country round about, even they also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul and Jonathan.

LSG ²¹ Il y avait parmi les Philistins, comme auparavant, des Hébreux qui étaient montés avec eux dans le camp, où ils se trouvaient disséminés, et ils se joignirent à ceux d'Israël qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan.

MAR ²¹ Or les Philistins avaient [avec eux] des Hébreux comme [ils avaient eu] auparavant, qui étaient montés [du pays] d'alentour avec eux en leur camp, et qui se joignirent incontinent aux Israëlites qui étaient avec Saül et Jonathan.

VULC ²¹ Sed et Hebræi qui fuerant cum Philisthiim heri et nudiustertius, ascenderantque cum eis in castris, reversi sunt ut essent cum Israël qui erant cum Saul et Jonatha.

WLC ²¹ וְהָעִבְרִ֗ים הָי֤וּ לַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ כְּאֶתְמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשׁ֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָל֥וּ עִמָּ֛ם בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה סָבִ֑יב וְגַם־ הֵ֗מָּה לִֽהְיוֹת֙ עִם־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר עִם־ שָׁא֖וּל וְיוֹנָתָֽן׃

KJV ²² Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them in the battle.

LSG ²² Tous les hommes d'Israël qui s'étaient cachés dans la montagne d'Éphraïm, apprenant que les Philistins fuyaient, se mirent aussi à les poursuivre dans la bataille.

MAR ²² Et tous les Israëlites qui s'étaient cachés dans la montagne d'Ephraïm, ayant appris que les Philistins s'enfuyaient, les poursuivirent aussi pour les combattre.

VULC ²² Omnes quoque Israëlitæ qui se absconderant in monte Ephraim, audientes quod fugissent Philisthæi, sociaverunt se cum suis in prælio. Et erant cum Saul quasi decem millia virorum.

WLC ²² וְכֹל֩ אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הַמִּֽתְחַבְּאִ֤ים בְּהַר־ אֶפְרַ֙יִם֙ שָֽׁמְע֔וּ כִּֽי־ נָ֖סוּ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַֽיַּדְבְּק֥וּ גַם־ הֵ֛מָּה אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

KJV ²³ So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle passed over unto Bethaven.

LSG ²³ L'Éternel délivra Israël ce jour-là, et le combat se prolongea jusqu'au delà de Beth Aven.

WLC ²³ וַיּ֧וֹשַׁע יְהוָ֛ה בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהַ֨מִּלְחָמָ֔ה עָבְרָ֖ה אֶת־ בֵּ֥ית אָֽוֶן׃

KJV ²⁴ And the men of Israel were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people tasted any food.

LSG ²⁴ La journée fut fatigante pour les hommes d'Israël. Saül avait fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture avant le soir, avant que je me sois vengé de mes ennemis ! Et personne n'avait pris de nourriture.

MAR ²⁴ Mais ceux d'Israël se trouvèrent fort fatigués en ce jour-là ; et Saül avait fait faire au peuple ce serment, disant : Maudit soit l'homme qui mangera d'aucune chose jusqu'au soir, afin que je me venge de mes ennemis ; de sorte que tout le peuple ne goûta d'aucune chose.

VULC ²⁴ Et viri Israël sociati sunt sibi in die illa : adjuravit autem Saul populum, dicens : Maledictus vir qui comederit panem usque ad vesperam, donec ulciscar de inimicis meis. Et non manducavit universus populus panem :

WLC ²⁴ וְאִֽישׁ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל נִגַּ֖שׂ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וַיֹּאֶל֩ שָׁא֨וּל אֶת־ הָעָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר אָר֣וּר הָ֠אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־ יֹ֨אכַל לֶ֜חֶם עַד־ הָעֶ֗רֶב וְנִקַּמְתִּי֙ מֵאֹ֣יְבַ֔י וְלֹֽא טָעַ֥ם כָּל־ הָעָ֖ם לָֽחֶם׃

KJV ²⁵ And all they of the land came to a wood; and there was honey upon the ground.

KJV ²⁶ And when the people were come into the wood, behold, the honey dropped; but no man put his hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath.

LSG ²⁶ Lorsque le peuple entra dans la forêt, il vit du miel qui coulait ; mais nul ne porta la main à la bouche, car le peuple respectait le serment.

MAR ²⁶ Le peuple donc entra dans la forêt, et voici du miel qui découlait ; et il n'y en eut aucun qui portât sa main à sa bouche ; car le peuple avait peur du serment.

VULC ²⁶ Ingressus est itaque populus saltum, et apparuit fluens mel, nullusque applicuit manum ad os suum : timebat enim populus juramentum.

WLC ²⁶ וַיָּבֹ֤א הָעָם֙ אֶל־ הַיַּ֔עַר וְהִנֵּ֖ה הֵ֣לֶךְ דְּבָ֑שׁ וְאֵין־ מַשִּׂ֤יג יָדוֹ֙ אֶל־ פִּ֔יו כִּֽי־ יָרֵ֥א הָעָ֖ם אֶת־ הַשְּׁבֻעָֽה׃

KJV ²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in an honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

LSG ²⁷ Jonathan ignorait le serment que son père avait fait faire au peuple ; il avança le bout du bâton qu'il avait à la main, le plongea dans un rayon de miel, et ramena la main à la bouche ; et ses yeux furent éclaircis.

MAR ²⁷ Or Jonathan n'avait point entendu son père lorsqu'il avait fait jurer le peuple, et il étendit le bout de la verge qu'il avait en sa main, et la trempa dans un rayon de miel ; et il porta sa main à sa bouche, et ses yeux furent éclaircis.

VULC ²⁷ Porro Jonathas non audierat cum adjuraret pater ejus populum : extenditque summitatem virgæ quam habebat in manu, et intinxit in favum mellis : et convertit manum suam ad os suum, et illuminati sunt oculi ejus.

KJV ²⁸ Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.

LSG ²⁸ Alors quelqu'un du peuple, lui adressant la parole, dit: Ton père a fait jurer le peuple, en disant: Maudit soit l'homme qui prendra de la nourriture aujourd'hui ! Or le peuple était épuisé.

MAR ²⁸ Alors quelqu'un du peuple prenant la parole, lui dit : Ton père a fait expressément jurer le peuple en disant : Maudit soit l'homme qui mangera aujourd'hui aucune chose ; quoique le peuple fût fort fatigué.

VULC ²⁸ Respondensque unus de populo, ait : Jurejurando constrinxit pater tuus populum, dicens : Maledictus vir qui comederit panem hodie. (Defecerat autem populus.)

KJV ²⁹ Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey.

LSG ²⁹ Et Jonathan dit: Mon père trouble le peuple ; voyez donc comme mes yeux se sont éclaircis, parce que j'ai goûté un peu de ce miel.

MAR ²⁹ Et Jonathan dit : Mon père a troublé le peuple du pays. Voyez, je vous prie, comment mes yeux sont éclaircis, pour avoir un peu goûté de ce miel ;

VULC ²⁹ Dixitque Jonathas : Turbavit pater meus terram : vidistis ipsi quia illuminati sunt oculi mei, eo quod gustaverim paululum de melle isto :

WLC ²⁹ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן עָכַ֥ר אָבִ֖י אֶת־ הָאָ֑רֶץ רְאוּ־ נָא֙ כִּֽי־ אֹ֣רוּ עֵינַ֔י כִּ֣י טָעַ֔מְתִּי מְעַ֖ט דְּבַ֥שׁ הַזֶּֽה׃

KJV ³⁰ How much more, if haply the people had eaten freely to day of the spoil of their enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much greater slaughter among the Philistines?

LSG ³⁰ Certes, si le peuple avait aujourd'hui mangé du butin qu'il a trouvé chez ses ennemis, la défaite des Philistins n'aurait-elle pas été plus grande ?

MAR ³⁰ combien plus si le peuple avait aujourd'hui mangé abondamment de la dépouille de ses ennemis, qu'il a trouvée ; car la défaite des Philistins n'en aurait-elle pas été plus grande ?

VULC ³⁰ quanto magis si comedisset populus de præda inimicorum suorum, quam reperit ? nonne major plaga facta fuisset in Philisthiim ?

KJV ³¹ And they smote the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: and the people were very faint.

KJV ³² And the people flew upon the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood.

KJV ³³ Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin against the LORD, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day.

LSG ³³ On le rapporta à Saül, et l'on dit: Voici, le peuple pèche contre l'Éternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Saül dit: Vous commettez une infidélité ; roulez à l'instant vers moi une grande pierre.

MAR ³³ Et on en fit rapport à Saül, en disant : Voici, le peuple pèche contre l'Eternel, en mangeant, avec le sang ; et il dit : Vous avez péché, roulez aujourd'hui une grande pierre sur moi.

VULC ³³ Nuntiaverunt autem Sauli dicentes quod populus peccasset Domino, comedens cum sanguine. Qui ait : Prævaricati estis : volvite ad me jam nunc saxum grande.

WLC ³³ וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ לְשָׁאוּל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֥ה הָעָ֛ם חֹטִ֥אים לַֽיהוָ֖ה לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עַל־ הַדָּ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בְּגַדְתֶּ֔ם גֹּֽלּוּ־ אֵלַ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם אֶ֥בֶן גְּדוֹלָֽה׃

KJV ³⁴ And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; and sin not against the LORD in eating with the blood. And all the people brought every man his ox with him that night, and slew them there.

LSG ³⁴ Puis il ajouta: Répandez-vous parmi le peuple, et dites à chacun de m'amener son boeuf ou sa brebis, et de l'égorger ici. Vous mangerez ensuite, et vous ne pécherez point contre l'Éternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Et pendant la nuit, chacun parmi le peuple amena son boeuf à la main, afin de l'égorger sur la pierre.

MAR ³⁴ Et Saül dit : Allez partout parmi le peuple, et dites-leur que chacun amène vers moi son boeuf, et chacun ses brebis ; vous les égorgerez ici, vous les mangerez, et vous ne pécherez point contre l'Eternel, en mangeant avec le sang. Et chacun du peuple amena cette nuit-là son boeuf à la main, et ils les égorgèrent là.

VULC ³⁴ Et dixit Saul : Dispergimini in vulgus, et dicite eis ut adducat ad me unusquisque bovem suum et arietem, et occidite super istud, et vescimini, et non peccabitis Domino comedentes cum sanguine. Adduxit itaque omnis populus unusquisque bovem in manu sua usque ad noctem : et occiderunt ibi.

WLC ³⁴ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֣וּל פֻּ֣צוּ בָעָ֡ם וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֣ם לָהֶ֡ם הַגִּ֣ישׁוּ אֵלַי֩ אִ֨ישׁ שׁוֹר֜וֹ וְאִ֣ישׁ שְׂיֵ֗הוּ וּשְׁחַטְתֶּ֤ם בָּזֶה֙ וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֔ם וְלֹֽא־ תֶחֶטְא֥וּ לַֽיהוָ֖ה לֶאֱכֹ֣ל אֶל־ הַדָּ֑ם וַיַּגִּ֨שׁוּ כָל־ הָעָ֜ם אִ֣ישׁ שׁוֹר֧וֹ בְיָד֛וֹ הַלַּ֖יְלָה וַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ־ שָֽׁם׃

KJV ³⁵ And Saul built an altar unto the LORD: the same was the first altar that he built unto the LORD.

KJV ³⁶ And Saul said, Let us go down after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, Let us draw near hither unto God.

LSG ³⁶ Saül dit: Descendons cette nuit après les Philistins, pillons-les jusqu'à la lumière du matin, et n'en laissons pas un de reste. Ils dirent: Fais tout ce qui te semblera bon. Alors le sacrificateur dit: Approchons-nous ici de Dieu.

MAR ³⁶ Puis Saül dit : Descendons et poursuivons de nuit les Philistins, et les pillons jusqu'à ce que le matin soit venu, et n'en laissons pas un de reste. Et ils dirent : Fais tout ce qui te semble bon ; mais le Sacrificateur dit : Approchons-nous ici vers Dieu.

VULC ³⁶ Et dixit Saul : Irruamus super Philisthæos nocte, et vastemus eos usque dum illucescat mane, nec relinquamus ex eis virum. Dixitque populus : Omne quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis, fac. Et ait sacerdos : Accedamus huc ad Deum.

WLC ³⁶ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֡וּל נֵרְדָ֣ה אַחֲרֵי֩ פְלִשְׁתִּ֨ים ׀ לַ֜יְלָה וְֽנָבֹ֥זָה בָהֶ֣ם ׀ עַד־ א֣וֹר הַבֹּ֗קֶר וְלֹֽא־ נַשְׁאֵ֤ר בָּהֶם֙ אִ֔ישׁ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כָּל־ הַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ עֲשֵׂ֑ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן נִקְרְבָ֥ה הֲלֹ֖ם אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

KJV ³⁷ And Saul asked counsel of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not that day.

LSG ³⁷ Et Saül consulta Dieu: Descendrai-je après les Philistins ? Les livreras-tu entre les mains d'Israël ? Mais en ce moment il ne lui donna point de réponse.

MAR ³⁷ Alors Saül consulta Dieu, [en disant] : Descendrai-je pour poursuivre les Philistins ? les livreras-tu entre les mains d'Israël ? et il ne lui donna point de réponse en ce jour-là.

VULC ³⁷ Et consuluit Saul Dominum : Num persequar Philisthiim ? si trades eos in manus Israël ? Et non respondit ei in die illa.

WLC ³⁷ וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל שָׁאוּל֙ בֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים הַֽאֵרֵד֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים הֲתִתְּנֵ֖ם בְּיַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֥א עָנָ֖הוּ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃

KJV ³⁸ And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.

VULC ³⁸ Dixitque Saul : Applicate huc universos angulos populi : et scitote, et videte per quem acciderit peccatum hoc hodie.

WLC ³⁸ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל גֹּ֣שֽׁוּ הֲלֹ֔ם כֹּ֖ל פִּנּ֣וֹת הָעָ֑ם וּדְע֣וּ וּרְא֔וּ בַּמָּ֗ה הָֽיְתָ֛ה הַחַטָּ֥את הַזֹּ֖את הַיּֽוֹם׃

KJV ³⁹ For, as the LORD liveth, which saveth Israel, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. But there was not a man among all the people that answered him.

LSG ³⁹ Car l'Éternel, le libérateur d'Israël, est vivant ! lors même que Jonathan, mon fils, en serait l'auteur, il mourrait. Et dans tout le peuple personne ne lui répondit.

MAR ³⁹ Car l'Eternel qui délivre Israël est vivant, qu'encore que cela eût été fait par mon fils Jonathan, il en mourra certainement. Et aucun de tout le peuple ne lui répondit rien.

VULC ³⁹ Vivit Dominus salvator Israël, quia si per Jonathan filium meum factum est, absque retractione morietur. Ad quod nullus contradixit ei de omni populo.

WLC ³⁹ כִּ֣י חַי־ יְהוָ֗ה הַמּוֹשִׁ֙יעַ֙ אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֧י אִם־ יֶשְׁנ֛וֹ בְּיוֹנָתָ֥ן בְּנִ֖י כִּ֣י מ֣וֹת יָמ֑וּת וְאֵ֥ין עֹנֵ֖הוּ מִכָּל־ הָעָֽם׃

KJV ⁴⁰ Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee.

LSG ⁴⁰ Il dit à tout Israël: Mettez-vous d'un côté ; et moi et Jonathan, mon fils, nous serons de l'autre. Et le peuple dit à Saül: Fais ce qui te semblera bon.

MAR ⁴⁰ Puis il dit à tout Israël : Mettez-vous d'un côté, et nous serons de l'autre côté moi et Jonathan mon fils. Le peuple répondit à Saül : Fais ce qui te semble bon.

VULC ⁴⁰ Et ait ad universum Israël : Separamini vos in partem unam, et ego cum Jonatha filio meo ero in parte altera. Responditque populus ad Saul : Quod bonum videtur in oculis tuis, fac.

KJV ⁴¹ Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped.

LSG ⁴¹ Saül dit à l'Éternel: Dieu d'Israël ! fais connaître la vérité. Jonathan et Saül furent désignés, et le peuple fut libéré.

MAR ⁴¹ Et Saül dit à l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël : Fais connaître celui qui est innocent. Et Jonathan et Saül furent saisis ; et le peuple échappa.

VULC ⁴¹ Et dixit Saul ad Dominum Deum Israël : Domine Deus Israël, da indicium : quid est quod non responderis servo tuo hodie ? si in me, aut in Jonatha filio meo, est iniquitas hæc, da ostensionem : aut si hæc iniquitas est in populo tuo, da sanctitatem. Et deprehensus est Jonathas et Saul : populus autem exivit.

KJV ⁴² And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

KJV ⁴³ Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey with the end of the rod that was in mine hand, and, lo, I must die.

LSG ⁴³ Saül dit à Jonathan: Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. Jonathan le lui déclara, et dit: J'ai goûté un peu de miel, avec le bout du bâton que j'avais à la main: me voici, je mourrai.

MAR ⁴³ Alors Saül dit à Jonathan : Déclare-moi ce que tu as fait. Et Jonathan lui déclara et dit : Il est vrai que j'ai goûté avec le bout de ma verge que j'avais en ma main un peu de miel ; me voici, je mourrai.

VULC ⁴³ Dixit autem Saul ad Jonathan : Indica mihi quid feceris. Et indicavit ei Jonathas, et ait : Gustans gustavi in summitate virgæ quæ erat in manu mea, paululum mellis, et ecce ego morior.

KJV ⁴⁴ And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt surely die, Jonathan.

LSG ⁴⁴ Et Saül dit: Que Dieu me traite dans toute sa rigueur, si tu ne meurs pas, Jonathan !

KJV ⁴⁵ And the people said unto Saul, Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel? God forbid: as the LORD liveth, there shall not one hair of his head fall to the ground; for he hath wrought with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, that he died not.

LSG ⁴⁵ Le peuple dit à Saül: Quoi ! Jonathan mourrait, lui qui a opéré cette grande délivrance en Israël ! Loin de là ! L'Éternel est vivant ! il ne tombera pas à terre un cheveu de sa tête, car c'est avec Dieu qu'il a agi dans cette journée. Ainsi le peuple sauva Jonathan, et il ne mourut point.

MAR ⁴⁵ Mais le peuple dit à Saül : Jonathan qui a fait cette grande délivrance en Israël, mourrait-il ? A Dieu ne plaise ! l'Eternel est vivant, si un seul des cheveux de sa tête tombe à terre ; car il a aujourd'hui opéré avec Dieu. Ainsi le peuple délivra Jonathan, et il ne mourut point.

VULC ⁴⁵ Dixitque populus ad Saul : Ergone Jonathas morietur, qui fecit salutem hanc magnam in Israël ? hoc nefas est : vivit Dominus, si ceciderit capillus de capite ejus in terram, quia cum Deo operatus est hodie. Liberavit ergo populus Jonathan, ut non moreretur.

KJV ⁴⁶ Then Saul went up from following the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their own place.

MAR ⁴⁷ Saül donc prit possession du Royaume d'Israël, et fit la guerre de tous côtes contre ses ennemis, contre Moab, et contre les enfants de Hammon, et contre Edom, et contre les Rois de Tsoba, et contre les Philistins ; partout où il se tournait, il mettait tout en trouble.

VULC ⁴⁷ Et Saul, confirmato regno super Israël, pugnabat per circuitum adversum omnes inimicos ejus, contra Moab, et filios Ammon, et Edom, et reges Soba, et Philisthæos : et quocumque se verterat, superabat.

KJV ⁴⁸ And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, and delivered Israel out of the hands of them that spoiled them.

KJV ⁵² And there was sore war against the Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him.
