KJV ¹ And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of Engedi.

KJV ² Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

WLC ² וַיְהִ֗י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ שָׁ֣ב שָׁא֔וּל מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ לוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֣ה דָוִ֔ד בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר עֵ֥ין גֶּֽדִי׃

KJV ³ And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

OST ³ Alors Saül prit trois mille hommes, choisis de tout Israël, et s'en alla chercher David et ses gens, jusque sur les rochers des chamois.

VULC ³ Assumens ergo Saul tria millia electorum virorum ex omni Israël, perrexit ad investigandum David et viros ejus, etiam super abruptissimas petras, quæ solis ibicibus perviæ sunt.

KJV ⁴ And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

OST ⁴ Et il vint aux parcs des brebis, auprès du chemin, et il y avait là une caverne, dans laquelle Saül entra pour ses nécessités; et David et ses gens se tenaient au fond de la caverne.

VULC ⁴ Et venit ad caulas ovium, quæ se offerebant vianti : eratque ibi spelunca, quam ingressus est Saul ut purgaret ventrem : porro David et viri ejus in interiore parte speluncæ latebant.

WLC ⁴ וַ֠יָּבֹא אֶל־ גִּדְר֨וֹת הַצֹּ֤אן עַל־ הַדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ וְשָׁ֣ם מְעָרָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֥א שָׁא֖וּל לְהָסֵ֣ךְ אֶת־ רַגְלָ֑יו וְדָוִד֙ וַאֲנָשָׁ֔יו בְּיַרְכְּתֵ֥י הַמְּעָרָ֖ה יֹשְׁבִֽים׃

KJV ⁵ And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

OST ⁵ Et les gens de David lui dirent: Voici le jour dont l'Éternel t'a dit: Je livre ton ennemi entre tes mains; tu lui feras comme il te semblera bon. Et David se leva et coupa tout doucement le pan du manteau de Saül.

VULC ⁵ Et dixerunt servi David ad eum : Ecce dies de qua locutus est Dominus ad te : Ego tradam tibi inimicum tuum, ut facias ei sicut placuerit in oculis tuis. Surrexit ergo David, et præcidit oram chlamydis Saul silenter.

WLC ⁵ וַיֹּאמְרוּ֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י דָוִ֜ד אֵלָ֗יו הִנֵּ֨ה הַיּ֜וֹם אֲ‍ֽשֶׁר־ אָמַ֧ר יְהוָ֣ה אֵלֶ֗יךָ הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י נֹתֵ֤ן אֶת־ בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר יִטַ֣ב בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וַיָּ֣קָם דָּוִ֗ד וַיִּכְרֹ֛ת אֶת־ כְּנַֽף־ הַמְּעִ֥יל אֲשֶׁר־ לְשָׁא֖וּל בַּלָּֽט׃

KJV ⁶ And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

OST ⁶ Mais, après cela, David fut ému en son coeur de ce qu'il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül,

VULC ⁶ Post hæc percussit cor suum David, eo quod abscidisset oram chlamydis Saul.

WLC ⁶ וַֽיְהִי֙ אַֽחֲרֵי־ כֵ֔ן וַיַּ֥ךְ לֵב־ דָּוִ֖ד אֹת֑וֹ עַ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּרַ֔ת אֶת־ כָּנָ֖ף אֲשֶׁ֥ר לְשָׁאֽוּל׃

KJV ⁷ So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on his way.

OST ⁷ Et il dit à ses gens: Que l'Éternel me garde de commettre contre mon seigneur, contre l'oint de l'Éternel, une action telle que de porter ma main sur lui! car il est l'oint de l'Éternel.

VULC ⁷ Dixitque ad viros suos : Propitius sit mihi Dominus, ne faciam hanc rem domino meo, christo Domini, ut mittam manum meam in eum : quia christus Domini est.

KJV ⁸ David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

OST ⁸ Et David arrêta ses gens par ces paroles, et il ne leur permit point de s'élever contre Saül. Puis Saül se leva de la caverne, et continua son chemin.

KJV ⁹ And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

OST ⁹ Après cela, David se leva, et sortit de la caverne, et cria après Saül, en disant: Mon seigneur et mon roi! Et Saül regarda derrière lui, et David s'inclina, le visage contre terre, et se prosterna.

VULC ⁹ Surrexit autem et David post eum : et egressus de spelunca, clamavit post tergum Saul, dicens : Domine mi rex. Et respexit Saul post se : et inclinans se David pronus in terram adoravit,

KJV ¹⁰ Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD's anointed.

OST ¹⁰ Et David dit à Saül: Pourquoi écoutes-tu les paroles de gens qui disent: Voilà David qui cherche ta perte?

KJV ¹¹ Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

KJV ¹² The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

OST ¹² Regarde, mon père, regarde le pan de ton manteau que j'ai à la main; puisque j'ai coupé le pan de ton manteau, et que je ne t'ai pas tué, sache et reconnais qu'il n'y a point de mal ni d'injustice en moi, et que je n'ai point péché contre toi; et toi tu épies ma vie pour me l'ôter!

KJV ¹⁸ And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.

KJV ¹⁹ For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.

KJV ²⁰ And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.

VULC ²⁰ Quis enim cum invenerit inimicum suum, dimittet eum in via bona ? sed Dominus reddat tibi vicissitudinem hanc pro eo quod hodie operatus es in me.

WLC ²⁰ וְכִֽי־ יִמְצָ֥א אִישׁ֙ אֶת־ אֹ֣יְב֔וֹ וְשִׁלְּח֖וֹ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ טוֹבָ֑ה וַֽיהוָה֙ יְשַׁלֶּמְךָ֣ טוֹבָ֔ה תַּ֚חַת הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתָה לִֽי׃

KJV ²¹ Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

OST ²¹ Et maintenant, voici, je sais que certainement tu régneras, et que le royaume d'Israël sera ferme entre tes mains.

VULC ²¹ Et nunc quia scio quod certissime regnaturus sis, et habiturus in manu tua regnum Israël :

KJV ²² And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.

OST ²² Jure-moi donc maintenant, par l'Éternel, que tu ne détruiras point ma race après moi, et que tu n'extermineras point mon nom de la maison de mon père.

VULC ²² jura mihi in Domino, ne deleas semen meum post me, neque auferas nomen meum de domo patris mei.

WLC ²² וְעַתָּ֗ה הִשָּׁ֤בְעָה לִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה אִם־ תַּכְרִ֥ית אֶת־ זַרְעִ֖י אַֽחֲרָ֑י וְאִם־ תַּשְׁמִ֥יד אֶת־ שְׁמִ֖י מִבֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי׃

OST ²³ Et David le jura à Saül. Alors Saül s'en alla en sa maison, et David et ses gens montèrent au lieu fort.

VULC ²³ Et juravit David Sauli. Abiit ergo Saul in domum suam : et David et viri ejus ascenderunt ad tutiora loca.

WLC ²³ וַיִּשָּׁבַ֥ע דָּוִ֖ד לְשָׁא֑וּל וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־ בֵּית֔וֹ וְדָוִד֙ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֔יו עָל֖וּ עַל־ הַמְּצוּדָֽה׃
