KJV ¹ And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

WLC ¹ וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־ שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל לְכָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֵּצֵ֣א יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ לִקְרַ֨את פְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וַֽיַּחֲנוּ֙ עַל־ הָאֶ֣בֶן הָעֵ֔זֶר וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים חָנ֥וּ בַאֲפֵֽק׃

KJV ² And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

OST ² Et les Philistins se rangèrent en bataille contre Israël; et le combat s'engagea, et Israël fut battu par les Philistins, qui tuèrent en bataille rangée dans la campagne, environ quatre mille hommes.

VULC ² et instruxerunt aciem contra Israël. Inito autem certamine, terga vertit Israël Philisthæis : et cæsa sunt in illo certamine passim per agros, quasi quatuor millia virorum.

WLC ² וַיַּעַרְכ֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לִקְרַ֣את יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל וַתִּטֹּשׁ֙ הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַיִּנָּ֥גֶף יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לִפְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיַּכּ֤וּ בַמַּֽעֲרָכָה֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה כְּאַרְבַּ֥עַת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִֽישׁ׃

KJV ³ And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

OST ³ Et le peuple étant rentré au camp, les anciens d'Israël dirent: Pourquoi l'Éternel nous a-t-il laissé battre aujourd'hui par les Philistins? Faisons venir de Silo l'arche de l'alliance de l'Éternel, et qu'il vienne au milieu de nous, et nous délivre de la main de nos ennemis.

VULC ³ Et reversus est populus ad castra : dixeruntque majores natu de Israël : Quare percussit nos Dominus hodie coram Philisthiim ? afferamus ad nos de Silo arcam fœderis Domini, et veniat in medium nostri, ut salvet nos de manu inimicorum nostrorum.

WLC ³ וַיָּבֹ֣א הָעָם֮ אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶה֒ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָ֣מָּה נְגָפָ֧נוּ יְהוָ֛ה הַיּ֖וֹם לִפְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים נִקְחָ֧ה אֵלֵ֣ינוּ מִשִּׁלֹ֗ה אֶת־ אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְיָבֹ֣א בְקִרְבֵּ֔נוּ וְיֹשִׁעֵ֖נוּ מִכַּ֥ף אֹיְבֵֽינוּ׃

KJV ⁴ So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

OST ⁴ Le peuple envoya donc à Silo, d'où l'on apporta l'arche de l'alliance de l'Éternel des armées, qui habite entre les chérubins; et les deux fils d'Héli, Hophni et Phinées, y étaient avec l'arche de l'alliance de Dieu.

VULC ⁴ Misit ergo populus in Silo, et tulerunt inde arcam fœderis Domini exercituum sedentis super cherubim : erantque duo filii Heli cum arca fœderis Dei, Ophni et Phinees.

WLC ⁴ וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח הָעָם֙ שִׁלֹ֔ה וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ מִשָּׁ֗ם אֵ֣ת אֲר֧וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָ֛ה צְבָא֖וֹת יֹשֵׁ֣ב הַכְּרֻבִ֑ים וְשָׁ֞ם שְׁנֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־ עֵלִ֗י עִם־ אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים חָפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָֽס׃

KJV ⁵ And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

OST ⁵ Et comme l'arche de l'Éternel entrait au camp, tout Israël jeta de si grands cris de joie, que la terre en retentit.

VULC ⁵ Cumque venisset arca fœderis Domini in castra, vociferatus est omnis Israël clamore grandi, et personuit terra.

WLC ⁵ וַיְהִ֗י כְּב֨וֹא אֲר֤וֹן בְּרִית־ יְהוָה֙ אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה וַיָּרִ֥עוּ כָל־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל תְּרוּעָ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַתֵּהֹ֖ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃

KJV ⁶ And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

OST ⁶ Et les Philistins, entendant le bruit des cris de joie, dirent: Que veulent dire ces grands cris de joie au camp des Hébreux? Et ils surent que l'arche de l'Éternel était venue au camp.

VULC ⁶ Et audierunt Philisthiim vocem clamoris, dixeruntque : Quænam est hæc vox clamoris magni in castris Hebræorum ? Et cognoverunt quod arca Domini venisset in castra.

WLC ⁶ וַיִּשְׁמְע֤וּ פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ אֶת־ ק֣וֹל הַתְּרוּעָ֔ה וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֶ֠ה ק֣וֹל הַתְּרוּעָ֧ה הַגְּדוֹלָ֛ה הַזֹּ֖את בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה הָעִבְרִ֑ים וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֚י אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה בָּ֖א אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

KJV ⁷ And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

OST ⁷ Et les Philistins eurent peur, car ils disaient: Dieu est venu au camp; et ils dirent: Malheur à nous! car il n'en était pas ainsi ces jours passés;

VULC ⁷ Timueruntque Philisthiim, dicentes : Venit Deus in castra. Et ingemuerunt, dicentes :

WLC ⁷ וַיִּֽרְאוּ֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כִּ֣י אָמְר֔וּ בָּ֥א אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיֹּאמְרוּ֙ א֣וֹי לָ֔נוּ כִּ֣י לֹ֥א הָיְתָ֛ה כָּזֹ֖את אֶתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֹֽׁם׃

KJV ⁸ Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

OST ⁸ Malheur à nous! qui nous délivrera de la main de ces Dieux puissants? Ce sont ces Dieux qui ont frappé les Égyptiens de toute sorte de plaies au désert.

VULC ⁸ Væ nobis : non enim fuit tanta exsultatio heri et nudiustertius : væ nobis. Quis nos salvabit de manu deorum sublimium istorum ? hi sunt dii, qui percusserunt Ægyptum omni plaga in deserto.

WLC ⁸ א֣וֹי לָ֔נוּ מִ֣י יַצִּילֵ֔נוּ מִיַּ֛ד הָאֱלֹהִ֥ים הָאַדִּירִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה אֵ֧לֶּה הֵ֣ם הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים הַמַּכִּ֧ים אֶת־ מִצְרַ֛יִם בְּכָל־ מַכָּ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

KJV ⁹ Be strong and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

OST ⁹ Philistins, renforcez-vous, et agissez en hommes, de peur que vous ne soyez esclaves des Hébreux, comme ils ont été les vôtres; soyez donc hommes, et combattez.

KJV ¹⁰ And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

OST ¹⁰ Les Philistins combattirent donc, et Israël fut battu, et chacun s'enfuit en sa tente; la défaite fut très grande, et trente mille hommes de pied d'Israël y périrent.

KJV ¹¹ And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

KJV ¹² And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

WLC ¹² וַיָּ֤רָץ אִישׁ־ בִּנְיָמִן֙ מֵהַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֥א שִׁלֹ֖ה בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וּמַדָּ֣יו קְרֻעִ֔ים וַאֲדָמָ֖ה עַל־ רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃

KJV ¹³ And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

OST ¹³ Et comme il arrivait, voici, Héli était assis sur son siège à côté du chemin, en attente; car son coeur tremblait à cause de l'arche de Dieu. Cet homme entra donc dans la ville pour porter ces nouvelles, et toute la ville se mit à crier.

VULC ¹³ Cumque ille venisset, Heli sedebat super sellam contra viam spectans. Erat enim cor ejus pavens pro arca Dei. Vir autem ille postquam ingressus est, nuntiavit urbi : et ululavit omnis civitas.

WLC ¹³ וַיָּב֗וֹא וְהִנֵּ֣ה עֵ֠לִי יֹשֵׁ֨ב עַֽל־ הַכִּסֵּ֜א דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ מְצַפֶּ֔ה כִּֽי־ הָיָ֤ה לִבּוֹ֙ חָרֵ֔ד עַ֖ל אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְהָאִ֗ישׁ בָּ֚א לְהַגִּ֣יד בָּעִ֔יר וַתִּזְעַ֖ק כָּל־ הָעִֽיר׃

KJV ¹⁴ And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

OST ¹⁴ Et Héli, entendant ces clameurs, dit: Que veut dire ce bruit, ce tumulte? Et cet homme, se hâtant, vint à Héli, et lui raconta tout.

VULC ¹⁴ Et audivit Heli sonitum clamoris, dixitque : Quis est hic sonitus tumultus hujus ? At ille festinavit, et venit, et nuntiavit Heli.

WLC ¹⁴ וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע עֵלִי֙ אֶת־ ק֣וֹל הַצְּעָקָ֔ה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מֶ֛ה ק֥וֹל הֶהָמ֖וֹן הַזֶּ֑ה וְהָאִ֣ישׁ מִהַ֔ר וַיָּבֹ֖א וַיַּגֵּ֥ד לְעֵלִֽי׃

KJV ¹⁵ Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

OST ¹⁵ Or, Héli était âgé de quatre-vingt-dix-huit ans, et ses yeux étaient fixes, et il ne pouvait plus voir.

KJV ¹⁶ And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

KJV ¹⁷ And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

KJV ¹⁸ And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

OST ¹⁸ Et dès qu'il eut fait mention de l'arche de Dieu, Héli tomba à la renverse de dessus son siège, à côté de la porte, et il se rompit le cou, et mourut; car c'était un homme vieux et pesant. Il avait jugé Israël quarante ans.

VULC ¹⁸ Cumque ille nominasset arcam Dei, cecidit de sella retrorsum juxta ostium, et fractis cervicibus mortuus est. Senex enim erat vir et grandævus : et ipse judicavit Israël quadraginta annis.

WLC ¹⁸ וַיְהִ֞י כְּהַזְכִּיר֣וֹ ׀ אֶת־ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיִּפֹּ֣ל מֵֽעַל־ הַ֠כִּסֵּא אֲחֹ֨רַנִּ֜ית בְּעַ֣ד ׀ יַ֣ד הַשַּׁ֗עַר וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֤ר מַפְרַקְתּוֹ֙ וַיָּמֹ֔ת כִּֽי־ זָקֵ֥ן הָאִ֖ישׁ וְכָבֵ֑ד וְה֛וּא שָׁפַ֥ט אֶת־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃

KJV ¹⁹ And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

OST ¹⁹ Et sa belle-fille, femme de Phinées, qui était enceinte et sur le point d'accoucher, ayant appris la nouvelle que l'arche de Dieu était prise, et que son beau-père et son mari étaient morts, s'affaissa et enfanta; car les douleurs lui survinrent.

VULC ¹⁹ Nurus autem ejus, uxor Phinees, prægnans erat, vicinaque partui : et audito nuntio quod capta esset arca Dei, et mortuus esset socer suus et vir suus, incurvavit se et peperit : irruerant enim in eam dolores subiti.

WLC ¹⁹ וְכַלָּת֣וֹ אֵֽשֶׁת־ פִּינְחָס֮ הָרָ֣ה לָלַת֒ וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע אֶת־ הַשְּׁמֻעָ֔ה אֶל־ הִלָּקַח֙ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וּמֵ֥ת חָמִ֖יהָ וְאִישָׁ֑הּ וַתִּכְרַ֣ע וַתֵּ֔לֶד כִּֽי־ נֶהֶפְכ֥וּ עָלֶ֖יהָ צִרֶֽיהָ׃

KJV ²⁰ And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

OST ²⁰ Et comme elle se mourait, celles qui étaient près d'elle, lui dirent: Ne crains point; car tu as enfanté un fils. Mais elle ne répondit rien, et n'y fit aucune attention.

VULC ²⁰ In ipso autem momento mortis ejus, dixerunt ei quæ stabant circa eam : Ne timeas, quia filium peperisti. Quæ non respondit eis, neque animadvertit.

WLC ²⁰ וּכְעֵ֣ת מוּתָ֗הּ וַתְּדַבֵּ֙רְנָה֙ הַנִּצָּב֣וֹת עָלֶ֔יהָ אַל־ תִּֽירְאִ֖י כִּ֣י בֵ֣ן יָלָ֑דְתְּ וְלֹ֥א עָנְתָ֖ה וְלֹא־ שָׁ֥תָה לִבָּֽהּ׃

KJV ²¹ And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

OST ²¹ Et elle nomma l'enfant Icabod (sans gloire), en disant: La gloire est ôtée d'Israël; parce que l'arche de l'Éternel était prise, et à cause de son beau-père et de son mari.

VULC ²¹ Et vocavit puerum Ichabod, dicens : Translata est gloria de Israël, quia capta est arca Dei, et pro socero suo et pro viro suo ;

WLC ²¹ וַתִּקְרָ֣א לַנַּ֗עַר אִֽי־ כָבוֹד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר גָּלָ֥ה כָב֖וֹד מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אֶל־ הִלָּקַח֙ אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאֶל־ חָמִ֖יהָ וְאִישָֽׁהּ׃

KJV ²² And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

OST ²² Elle dit donc: La gloire est ôtée d'Israël; car l'arche de Dieu est prise.
