KJV ¹ And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.

KJV ² Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba.

S21 ² Son fils aîné se nommait Joël, et le second Abija. Ils étaient juges à Beer-Shéba.

WLC ² וַיְהִ֞י שֶׁם־ בְּנ֤וֹ הַבְּכוֹר֙ יוֹאֵ֔ל וְשֵׁ֥ם מִשְׁנֵ֖הוּ אֲבִיָּ֑ה שֹׁפְטִ֖ים בִּבְאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃

KJV ³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.

S21 ³ Les fils de Samuel ne marchèrent pas sur ses traces; ils se livraient à des profits malhonnêtes, acceptaient des cadeaux et tordaient le droit.

WLC ³ וְלֹֽא־ הָלְכ֤וּ בָנָיו֙ וַיִּטּ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֣י הַבָּ֑צַע וַיִּ֨קְחוּ־ שֹׁ֔חַד וַיַּטּ֖וּ מִשְׁפָּֽט׃

KJV ⁴ Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,

S21 ⁴ Tous les anciens d'Israël se rassemblèrent et allèrent trouver Samuel à Rama.

WLC ⁴ וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ כֹּ֖ל זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל הָרָמָֽתָה׃

KJV ⁵ And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

S21 ⁵ Ils lui dirent: «Te voilà vieux et tes fils ne marchent pas sur tes traces. Maintenant, établis sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme on en trouve dans toutes les nations.»

WLC ⁵ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו הִנֵּה֙ אַתָּ֣ה זָקַ֔נְתָּ וּבָנֶ֕יךָ לֹ֥א הָלְכ֖וּ בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ עַתָּ֗ה שִֽׂימָה־ לָּ֥נוּ מֶ֛לֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ כְּכָל־ הַגּוֹיִֽם׃

KJV ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.

S21 ⁶ Cela déplut à Samuel qu'ils disent: «Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger», et il pria l'Eternel.

WLC ⁶ וַיֵּ֤רַע הַדָּבָר֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמְר֔וּ תְּנָה־ לָּ֥נוּ מֶ֖לֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵ֑נוּ וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל אֶל־ יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ⁷ And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

S21 ⁷ L'Eternel dit à Samuel: «Ecoute le peuple dans tout ce qu'il te dira, car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils rejettent, c'est moi, afin que je ne règne plus sur eux.

WLC ⁷ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל שְׁמַע֙ בְּק֣וֹל הָעָ֔ם לְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־ יֹאמְר֖וּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א אֹֽתְךָ֙ מָאָ֔סוּ כִּֽי־ אֹתִ֥י מָאֲס֖וּ מִמְּלֹ֥ךְ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV ⁸ According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.

S21 ⁸ Ils agissent envers toi comme ils l'ont toujours fait depuis que je les ai fait sortir d'Egypte jusqu'à aujourd'hui: ils m'ont abandonné pour servir d'autres dieux.

WLC ⁸ כְּכָֽל־ הַמַּעֲשִׂ֣ים אֲשֶׁר־ עָשׂ֗וּ מִיּוֹם֩ הַעֲלֹתִ֨י אֹתָ֤ם מִמִּצְרַ֙יִם֙ וְעַד־ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיַּ֣עַזְבֻ֔נִי וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֑ים כֵּ֛ן הֵ֥מָּה עֹשִׂ֖ים גַּם־ לָֽךְ׃

KJV ⁹ Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.

S21 ⁹ Ecoute-les donc, mais donne-leur des avertissements, fais-leur connaître les droits du roi qui régnera sur eux.»

WLC ⁹ וְעַתָּ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקוֹלָ֑ם אַ֗ךְ כִּֽי־ הָעֵ֤ד תָּעִיד֙ בָּהֶ֔ם וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ לָהֶ֔ם מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְלֹ֖ךְ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

KJV ¹⁰ And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.

S21 ¹⁰ Samuel rapporta toutes les paroles de l'Eternel au peuple qui lui demandait un roi.

WLC ¹⁰ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אֶל־ הָעָ֕ם הַשֹּׁאֲלִ֥ים מֵאִתּ֖וֹ מֶֽלֶךְ׃

KJV ¹¹ And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

S21 ¹¹ Il dit: «Voici quels seront les droits du roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils et les mettra sur ses chars ou parmi ses cavaliers, ou encore ils devront courir devant son char.

WLC ¹¹ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר זֶ֗ה יִֽהְיֶה֙ מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְלֹ֖ךְ עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם אֶת־ בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם יִקָּ֗ח וְשָׂ֥ם לוֹ֙ בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּ֣וֹ וּבְפָרָשָׁ֔יו וְרָצ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י מֶרְכַּבְתּֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹² And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

S21 ¹² Il fera d'eux des chefs de milliers et des chefs de cinquantaines. Il les emploiera à labourer ses terres, à récolter ses moissons, à fabriquer ses armes de guerre et l'équipement de ses chars.

WLC ¹² וְלָשׂ֣וּם ל֔וֹ שָׂרֵ֥י אֲלָפִ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֣י חֲמִשִּׁ֑ים וְלַחֲרֹ֤שׁ חֲרִישׁוֹ֙ וְלִקְצֹ֣ר קְצִיר֔וֹ וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת כְּלֵֽי־ מִלְחַמְתּ֖וֹ וּכְלֵ֥י רִכְבּֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹³ And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

S21 ¹³ Il prendra vos filles pour faire d'elles des parfumeuses, des cuisinières et des boulangères.

WLC ¹³ וְאֶת־ בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם יִקָּ֑ח לְרַקָּח֥וֹת וּלְטַבָּח֖וֹת וּלְאֹפֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹⁴ And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

S21 ¹⁴ Il prendra la meilleure partie de vos champs, de vos vignes et de vos oliviers et la donnera à ses serviteurs.

WLC ¹⁴ וְאֶת־ שְׂ֠דֽוֹתֵיכֶם וְאֶת־ כַּרְמֵיכֶ֧ם וְזֵיתֵיכֶ֛ם הַטּוֹבִ֖ים יִקָּ֑ח וְנָתַ֖ן לַעֲבָדָֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁵ And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

S21 ¹⁵ Il prendra la dîme du produit de vos champs et de vos vignes et la donnera à ses serviteurs.

WLC ¹⁵ וְזַרְעֵיכֶ֥ם וְכַרְמֵיכֶ֖ם יַעְשֹׂ֑ר וְנָתַ֥ן לְסָרִיסָ֖יו וְלַעֲבָדָֽיו׃

KJV ¹⁶ And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

S21 ¹⁶ Il prendra vos esclaves et vos servantes, vos meilleurs bœufs et vos ânes et se servira d'eux pour ses travaux.

WLC ¹⁶ וְאֶת־ עַבְדֵיכֶם֩ וְֽאֶת־ שִׁפְח֨וֹתֵיכֶ֜ם וְאֶת־ בַּחוּרֵיכֶ֧ם הַטּוֹבִ֛ים וְאֶת־ חֲמוֹרֵיכֶ֖ם יִקָּ֑ח וְעָשָׂ֖ה לִמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃

KJV ¹⁷ He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

S21 ¹⁷ Il prendra la dîme de vos troupeaux et vous serez vous-mêmes ses esclaves.

WLC ¹⁷ צֹאנְכֶ֖ם יַעְשֹׂ֑ר וְאַתֶּ֖ם תִּֽהְיוּ־ ל֥וֹ לַעֲבָדִֽים׃

KJV ¹⁸ And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

S21 ¹⁸ Alors vous crierez contre votre roi, celui que vous vous serez choisi, mais l'Eternel ne vous exaucera pas.»

WLC ¹⁸ וּזְעַקְתֶּם֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא מִלִּפְנֵ֣י מַלְכְּכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם לָכֶ֑ם וְלֹֽא־ יַעֲנֶ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃

KJV ¹⁹ Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

S21 ¹⁹ Le peuple refusa d'écouter Samuel. «Cela ne fait rien, dirent-ils, il y aura quand même un roi sur nous,

WLC ¹⁹ וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ הָעָ֔ם לִשְׁמֹ֖עַ בְּק֣וֹל שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֹּ֔א כִּ֥י אִם־ מֶ֖לֶךְ יִֽהְיֶ֥ה עָלֵֽינוּ׃

KJV ²⁰ That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

S21 ²⁰ et nous aussi nous serons pareils à toutes les nations: notre roi nous jugera, il marchera à notre tête et conduira nos guerres.»

WLC ²⁰ וְהָיִ֥ינוּ גַם־ אֲנַ֖חְנוּ כְּכָל־ הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וּשְׁפָטָ֤נוּ מַלְכֵּ֙נוּ֙ וְיָצָ֣א לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ וְנִלְחַ֖ם אֶת־ מִלְחֲמֹתֵֽנוּ׃

KJV ²¹ And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

S21 ²¹ Après avoir entendu toutes les paroles du peuple, Samuel les répéta à l'Eternel,

WLC ²¹ וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כָּל־ דִּבְרֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַֽיְדַבְּרֵ֖ם בְּאָזְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

KJV ²² And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

S21 ²² et l'Eternel lui dit: «Ecoute-les et établis un roi sur eux.» Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël: «Que chacun retourne dans sa ville.»

WLC ²² וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־ שְׁמוּאֵל֙ שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקוֹלָ֔ם וְהִמְלַכְתָּ֥ לָהֶ֖ם מֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־ אַנְשֵׁ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְכ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לְעִירֽוֹ׃
