¹ Amasias devint roi à l'âge de vingt cinq ans, et il régna neuf ans à Jérusalem. Sa mère s'appelait Joadan, de Jérusalem. ² Il fit ce qui est droit aux yeux de Yahweh, mais non d'un coeur parfait. ³ Lorsque la royauté fut affermie sur lui, il mit à mort ses serviteurs qui avaient tué le roi, son père ; ⁴ mais il ne fit pas mourir leurs fils, selon ce qui est écrit dans la Loi, dans le livre de Moïse, où Yahweh donne ce commandement : "les pères ne mourront pas pour les enfants, et les enfants ne mourront pas pour les pères ; mais chacun mourra pour ses péchés." ⁵ Amasias rassembla les hommes de Juda et les organisa d'après les maisons patriarcales, les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines, pour tout Juda et Benjamin ; il en fit le recensement depuis l' âge de vingt ans et au-dessus, et il trouva trois cent mille hommes d'élite, en état d'aller à la guerre, et de manier la lance et le bouclier. ⁶ Il prit encore à sa solde, parmi ceux d'Israël, cent mille vaillants hommes pour cent talents d'argent. ⁷ Un homme de Dieu vint auprès de lui, en disant : "O roi, qu'une armée d'Israël ne marche point avec toi, car Yahweh n'est pas avec Israël, avec tous les fils d'Éphraïm. ⁸ Mais pars seul, agis, sois vaillant dans le combat, et Dieu ne te laissera pas tomber devant l'ennemi, car Dieu a le pouvoir de secourir et de faire tomber." ⁹ Amasias dit à l'homme de Dieu : "Mais que faire à l'égard des cent talents que j'ai donnés à la troupe d'Israël ?" L'homme de Dieu répondit : "Yahweh peut te donner beaucoup plus que cela." ¹⁰ Amasias sépara la troupe qui lui était venue d'Éphraïm, pour qu'elle allât dans son pays. Mais la colère de ces gens s'alluma contre Juda, et ils s'en allèrent dans leur pays enflammés de colère. ¹¹ Amasias, rempli de courage, conduisit son peuple ; il s'en alla dans la vallée du Sel, et battit dix mille hommes des fils de Séir. ¹² Les fils de Juda en firent captifs dix mille vivants, et les menèrent au sommet d'un rocher ; ils les précipitèrent du sommet du rocher, et tous furent broyés. ¹³ Cependant, les gens de la troupe qu'Amasias avait renvoyés pour qu'ils n'allassent pas à la guerre avec lui, se jetèrent sur les villages de Juda ; depuis Samarie jusqu'à Béthoron, y tuèrent trois mille hommes et enlevèrent de nombreuses dépouilles. ¹⁴ Après qu'Amasias fut revenu de battre les Edomites, il apporta les dieux des fils de Séir et, les ayant établis pour ses dieux, il se prosterna devant eux et leur offrit des parfums. ¹⁵ La colère de Yahweh s'enflamma contre Amasias, et il envoya vers lui un prophète, qui lui dit : "Pourquoi as-tu honoré les dieux de ce peuple, qui n'ont pu délivrer leur peuple de ta main ?" ¹⁶ Comme il lui parlait, Amasias lui dit : "Est-ce que nous t'avons fait conseiller du roi ? Retire-toi ! Pourquoi te frapperait-on ?" Le prophète se retira et dit : "Je sais que Dieu a résolu de te détruire, parce que tu as fait cela et que tu n'as pas écouté mon conseil." ¹⁷ Après avoir pris avis, Amasias, roi de Juda, envoya dire à Joas, fils de Joachaz, fils de Jéhu, roi d'Israël : "Viens, et voyons-nous en face !" Et Joas, roi d'Israël, envoya répondre à Amasias, roi de Juda : ¹⁸ "L'épine qui est au Liban envoya dire au cèdre qui est au Liban : Donne ta fille pour femme à mon fils. Et les bêtes sauvages qui sont au Liban passèrent et foulèrent l'épine. ¹⁹ Tu te dis : Voici que tu as battu les Edomites, et ton coeur te porte à te glorifier. Maintenant, reste chez toi ! Pourquoi t'engager dans le malheur, pour tomber, toi et Juda avec toi ?" ²⁰ Mais Amasias ne l'écouta pas car ce fut d'après la volonté de Dieu qu'il fit cette guerre, afin de livrer les hommes de Juda entre les mains de l'ennemi, parce qu'ils avaient honoré les dieux d'Edom. ²¹ Et Joas, roi d'Israël, monta, et ils se virent en face, lui et Amasias, roi de Juda, à Bethsamès, qui est à Juda. ²² Juda fut battu devant Israël, et chacun s'enfuit dans sa tente. ²³ Et Joas, roi d'Israël, prit à Bethsamès Amasias, roi de Juda, fils de Joas, fils de Joachaz. Il l'emmena à Jérusalem, et il fit une brèche de quatre cents coudées dans la muraille de Jérusalem, depuis la porte d'Éphraïm jusqu'à la porte de l'angle. ²⁴ Il prit tout l'or et l'argent et tous les ustensiles qui se trouvaient dans la maison de Dieu, chez Obédédom, et les trésors de la maison du roi ; il prit aussi des otages, et retourna à Samarie. ²⁵ Amasias, fils de Joas, roi de Juda, vécut quinze ans après la mort de Joas, fils de Joachaz, roi d'Israël. ²⁶ Le reste des actes, d'Amasias, les premiers et les derniers, cela n'est-il pas écrit dans le livre des rois de Juda et d'Israël ? ²⁷ Après qu'Amasias se fut détourné de Yahweh, on ourdit contre lui une conspiration à Jérusalem, et il s'enfuit à Lachis ; mais on envoya après lui des hommes à Lachis, et on l'y mit à mort. ²⁸ On le transporta sur des chevaux, et on l'enterra avec ses pères dans la ville de Juda.

   ¹ Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem. ² And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, but not with a perfect heart. ³ Now it came to pass, when the kingdom was established to him, that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father. ⁴ But he slew not their children, but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not die for the children, neither shall the children die for the fathers, but every man shall die for his own sin. ⁵ Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together, and made them captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, according to the houses of their fathers, throughout all Judah and Benjamin: and he numbered them from twenty years old and above, and found them three hundred thousand choice men, able to go forth to war, that could handle spear and shield. ⁶ He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for an hundred talents of silver. ⁷ But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim. ⁸ But if thou wilt go, do it; be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast down. ⁹ And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The LORD is able to give thee much more than this. ¹⁰ Then Amaziah separated them, to wit, the army that was come to him out of Ephraim, to go home again: wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah, and they returned home in great anger. ¹¹ And Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand. ¹² And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces. ¹³ But the soldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Bethhoron, and smote three thousand of them, and took much spoil.
   ¹⁴ Now it came to pass, after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed down himself before them, and burned incense unto them. ¹⁵ Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah, and he sent unto him a prophet, which said unto him, Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people, which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand? ¹⁶ And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king's counsel? forbear; why shouldest thou be smitten? Then the prophet forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not hearkened unto my counsel.
   ¹⁷ Then Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us see one another in the face. ¹⁸ And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trode down the thistle. ¹⁹ Thou sayest, Lo, thou hast smitten the Edomites; and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast: abide now at home; why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee? ²⁰ But Amaziah would not hear; for it came of God, that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies, because they sought after the gods of Edom. ²¹ So Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and Amaziah king of Judah, at Bethshemesh, which belongeth to Judah. ²² And Judah was put to the worse before Israel, and they fled every man to his tent. ²³ And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash, the son of Jehoahaz, at Bethshemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits. ²⁴ And he took all the gold and the silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obededom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages also, and returned to Samaria. ²⁵ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years. ²⁶ Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, behold, are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel? ²⁷ Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the LORD they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem; and he fled to Lachish: but they sent to Lachish after him, and slew him there. ²⁸ And they brought him upon horses, and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

   ¹ Viginti quinque annorum erat Amasias cum regnare cœpisset, et viginti novem annis regnavit in Jerusalem : nomen matris ejus Joadan de Jerusalem.
   ² Fecitque bonum in conspectu Domini, verumtamen non in corde perfecto.
   ³ Cumque roboratum sibi videret imperium, jugulavit servos qui occiderant regem patrem suum,
   ⁴ sed filios eorum non interfecit, sicut scriptum est in libro legis Moysi, ubi præcepit Dominus, dicens : Non occidentur patres pro filiis, neque filii pro patribus suis, sed unusquisque in suo peccato morietur.
   ⁵ Congregavit igitur Amasias Judam, et constituit eos per familias, tribunosque et centuriones in universo Juda et Benjamin : et recensuit a viginti annis supra, invenitque trecenta millia juvenum qui egrederentur ad pugnam, et tenerent hastam et clypeum :
   ⁶ mercede quoque conduxit de Israël centum millia robustorum, centum talentis argenti.

   ⁸ quod si putas in robore exercitus bella consistere, superari te faciet Deus ab hostibus : Dei quippe est et adjuvare, et in fugam convertere.
   ⁹ Dixitque Amasias ad hominem Dei : Quid ergo fiet de centum talentis, quæ dedi militibus Israël ? Et respondit ei homo Dei : Habet Dominus unde tibi dare possit multo his plura.
   ¹⁰ Separavit itaque Amasias exercitum qui venerat ad eum ex Ephraim, ut reverteretur in locum suum : at illi contra Judam vehementer irati, reversi sunt in regionem suam.
   ¹¹ Porro Amasias confidenter eduxit populum suum, et abiit in vallem Salinarum, percussitque filios Seir decem millia :

   ¹⁷ Igitur Amasias rex Juda inito pessimo consilio, misit ad Joas filium Joachaz filii Jehu regem Israël, dicens : Veni, videamus nos mutuo.
   ¹⁸ At ille remisit nuntios, dicens : Carduus qui est in Libano misit ad cedrum Libani, dicens : Da filiam tuam filio meo uxorem : et ecce bestiæ quæ erant in silva Libani, transierunt, et conculcaverunt carduum.
