KJV ¹ After these things, and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.

S21 ¹ Après ces événements et ces actes de fidélité arriva Sanchérib, le roi d'Assyrie. Il pénétra en Juda et assiégea les villes fortifiées, dans l'intention de s'en emparer.

KJV ² And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

S21 ² Voyant que Sanchérib était venu et voulait attaquer Jérusalem, Ezéchias

KJV ³ He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.

S21 ³ tint conseil avec ses chefs et ses hommes vaillants afin de boucher les sources d'eau qui se trouvaient à l'extérieur de la ville, et ils le soutinrent.

KJV ⁴ So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?

S21 ⁴ Une foule de gens se rassemblèrent et ils bouchèrent toutes les sources et le ruisseau qui coule au milieu de la région. «Pourquoi, disaient-ils, les rois d'Assyrie trouveraient-ils à leur arrivée de l'eau en abondance?»

KJV ⁵ Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.

S21 ⁵ Ezéchias prit courage. Il répara toutes les brèches faites à la muraille et suréleva les tours ainsi que l'autre muraille, à l'extérieur, fortifia la terrasse de Millo dans la ville de David et prépara un grand nombre d'armes et de boucliers.

KJV ⁶ And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them, saying,

S21 ⁶ Il désigna des chefs militaires à la tête du peuple, puis il les réunit autour de lui sur la place de la porte de la ville et toucha leur cœur en disant:

KJV ⁷ Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:

S21 ⁷ «Fortifiez-vous et soyez pleins de courage! N'ayez pas peur et ne vous laissez pas effrayer face au roi d'Assyrie et à toute la foule qui est avec lui, car avec nous il y a plus qu'avec lui.

KJV ⁸ With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

S21 ⁸ Avec lui il y a un bras de chair, tandis qu'avec nous il y a l'Eternel, notre Dieu, qui nous aidera et qui combattra pour nous.» Le peuple eut confiance dans les paroles d'Ezéchias, roi de Juda.

KJV ⁹ After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,

S21 ⁹ Après cela, Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, envoya ses serviteurs à Jérusalem, pendant que lui-même attaquait Lakis avec toutes ses forces. Il les envoya vers Ezéchias, roi de Juda, et vers tous les Judéens qui se trouvaient à Jérusalem pour leur transmettre ce message:

KJV ¹⁰ Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem?

S21 ¹⁰ «Voici ce que dit Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie: Sur quoi repose votre confiance pour que vous restiez dans une Jérusalem assiégée?

KJV ¹¹ Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

S21 ¹¹ Ezéchias ne vous pousse-t-il pas à vous livrer à la mort par la famine et par la soif quand il affirme: ‘L'Eternel, notre Dieu, nous délivrera du roi d'Assyrie'?

KJV ¹² Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?

S21 ¹² N'est-ce pas lui, Ezéchias, qui a fait disparaître les hauts lieux et les autels de l'Eternel et qui a donné cet ordre à Juda et à Jérusalem: ‘Vous vous prosternerez devant un seul autel et c'est sur lui que vous brûlerez les parfums'?

KJV ¹³ Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?

S21 ¹³ Ne savez-vous pas ce que nous avons fait, mes prédécesseurs et moi, à tous les peuples des autres pays? Les dieux des nations de ces pays ont-ils pu délivrer leur pays de ma domination?

KJV ¹⁴ Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?

S21 ¹⁴ Parmi tous les dieux des nations que mes prédécesseurs ont vouées à la destruction, quel est celui qui a pu délivrer son peuple de ma domination, pour que votre Dieu puisse vous en délivrer?

KJV ¹⁵ Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?

S21 ¹⁵ Qu'Ezéchias ne vous trompe donc pas et ne vous pousse pas dans cette direction! Ne vous fiez pas à lui, car aucun dieu d'aucune nation ni d'aucun royaume n'a pu délivrer son peuple de ma domination ni de celle de mes prédécesseurs. Votre Dieu sera d'autant moins capable de vous délivrer de ma domination!»

KJV ¹⁶ And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah.

S21 ¹⁶ Les serviteurs de Sanchérib continuèrent à parler contre l'Eternel Dieu et contre son serviteur Ezéchias.

KJV ¹⁷ He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.

S21 ¹⁷ Sanchérib avait aussi écrit une lettre insultante pour l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, en s'exprimant ainsi contre lui: «Les dieux des nations des autres pays n'ont pas délivré leur peuple de ma domination. Il en ira exactement de même pour le Dieu d'Ezéchias: il ne délivrera pas son peuple de ma domination.»

KJV ¹⁸ Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

S21 ¹⁸ Les serviteurs de Sanchérib crièrent d'une voix forte en s'adressant dans la langue des Juifs à la population de Jérusalem qui se trouvait sur la muraille, et cela afin de semer la peur et l'épouvante parmi eux et de pouvoir ainsi s'emparer de la ville.

KJV ¹⁹ And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.

S21 ¹⁹ Ils parlèrent du Dieu de Jérusalem comme des dieux des autres peuples de la terre, qui sont fabriqués par les mains de l'homme.

KJV ²⁰ And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.

S21 ²⁰ Le roi Ezéchias et le prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots, se mirent à prier à ce sujet, ils crièrent au ciel.

KJV ²¹ And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

S21 ²¹ Alors l'Eternel envoya un ange. Il fit disparaître du camp du roi d'Assyrie tous les vaillants hommes, les princes et les chefs. Et le roi retourna couvert de honte dans son pays. Il entra dans le temple de son dieu et là, quelques-uns de ses propres enfants le firent tomber par l'épée.

KJV ²² Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.

S21 ²² Ainsi, l'Eternel sauva Ezéchias et les habitants de Jérusalem de la domination de Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, et de celle de tous ses ennemis, et il les protégea contre ceux qui les entouraient.

KJV ²³ And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

S21 ²³ Beaucoup de gens apportèrent des offrandes à l'Eternel à Jérusalem, ainsi que des cadeaux de valeur à Ezéchias, roi de Juda. Celui-ci fut, depuis lors, tenu en haute estime parmi toutes les nations.

KJV ²⁴ In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.

S21 ²⁴ A cette époque-là, Ezéchias fut atteint d'une maladie mortelle. Il pria l'Eternel, et l'Eternel lui adressa la parole et lui accorda un signe.

KJV ²⁵ But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

S21 ²⁵ Cependant, Ezéchias ne répondit pas au bienfait qu'il avait reçu, car son cœur devint orgueilleux, si bien que la colère de l'Eternel reposa sur lui, sur Juda et sur Jérusalem.

KJV ²⁶ Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

S21 ²⁶ Alors Ezéchias s'humilia de son orgueil, de même que les habitants de Jérusalem, de sorte que la colère de l'Eternel ne vint pas sur eux pendant la vie d'Ezéchias.

KJV ²⁷ And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;

S21 ²⁷ Ezéchias eut beaucoup de richesses et de gloire. Il se fit des réserves d'argent, d'or, de pierres précieuses, d'aromates, de boucliers et de tous les objets qu'on peut désirer,

KJV ²⁸ Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.

S21 ²⁸ des entrepôts pour les récoltes de blé, de vin nouveau et d'huile, des étables pour toutes les sortes de bétail et des troupeaux pour les étables.

KJV ²⁹ Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.

S21 ²⁹ Il se construisit des villes et il eut de nombreux troupeaux de petit et de gros bétail. En effet, Dieu lui avait donné des biens considérables.

KJV ³⁰ This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

S21 ³⁰ Ce fut aussi lui, Ezéchias, qui boucha l'issue supérieure des eaux de Guihon pour les diriger plus bas vers l'ouest de la ville de David. Ezéchias réussit dans tout ce qu'il entreprenait.

KJV ³¹ Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

S21 ³¹ Cependant, lorsque les chefs de Babylone lui envoyèrent des ambassadeurs pour s'informer du signe qui avait eu lieu dans le pays, Dieu l'abandonna pour le mettre à l'épreuve afin de connaître tout ce qui était dans son cœur.

KJV ³² Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

S21 ³² Le reste des actes d'Ezéchias et sa piété, cela est décrit dans la vision du prophète Esaïe, fils d'Amots, et dans les annales des rois de Juda et d'Israël.

KJV ³³ And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

S21 ³³ Ezéchias se coucha avec ses ancêtres et on l'enterra sur la montée des tombeaux des descendants de David; tout Juda et les habitants de Jérusalem lui rendirent honneur à sa mort. Son fils Manassé devint roi à sa place.
