BAN ¹ Paul fixant ses regards sur le sanhédrin, dit : Hommes frères, c'est en toute bonne conscience que je me suis conduit devant Dieu jusqu'à ce jour.

KJV ¹ And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

BAN ² Mais le souverain sacrificateur Ananias commanda à ceux qui étaient près de lui de le frapper sur la bouche.

KJV ² And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

BAN ³ Alors Paul lui dit : Dieu te frappera, muraille blanchie ! Toi aussi, tu sièges pour me juger selon la loi, et, transgressant la loi, tu or- donnes qu'on me frappe ?

KJV ³ Then said Paul unto him, God shall smite thee, thou whited wall: for sittest thou to judge me after the law, and commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

BAN ⁴ Et ceux qui étaient près lui dirent : Tu injuries le souverain sacrificateur de Dieu ?

KJV ⁴ And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?

BAN ⁵ Et Paul dit : Je ne savais pas, frères, qu'il fût souverain sacrificateur ; car il est écrit : Tu ne parleras point mal contre un chef de ton peuple.

KJV ⁵ Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

BAN ⁶ Or Paul sachant qu'une partie du conseil étaient des sadducéens, et l'autre des pharisiens, s'écria au milieu du sanhédrin : Hommes frères, je suis pharisien, fils de pharisiens ; c'est au sujet de l'espérance et de la résurrection des morts que je suis mis en jugement.

KJV ⁶ But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

BAN ⁷ Et comme il disait cela, il s'éleva une altercation entre les pharisiens et les sadducéens ; et l'assemblée se divisa.

KJV ⁷ And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

BAN ⁸ Car les sadducéens disent qu'il n'y a point de résurrection, ni d'ange ni d'esprit ; tandis que les pharisiens admettent l'un et l'autre.

KJV ⁸ For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

BAN ⁹ Et il se fit une grande clameur. Et quelques scribes du parti des pharisiens s'étant levés, disputaient violemment, en disant : Nous ne trouvons aucun mal en cet homme ; mais si un esprit ou un ange lui a parlé ?...

KJV ⁹ And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees' part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, let us not fight against God.

BAN ¹⁰ Et comme une grande agitation se produisait, le tribun, craignant que Paul ne fût mis en pièces par eux, ordonna que la troupe descendit pour l'enlever du milieu d'eux et le conduire dans la forteresse.

KJV ¹⁰ And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces of them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the castle.

BAN ¹¹ Mais la nuit suivante, le Seigneur lui apparut et dit : Prends courage ; car, comme tu as rendu témoignage à Jérusalem de ce qui me concerne, il faut aussi que tu rendes témoignage à Rome.

KJV ¹¹ And the night following the Lord stood by him, and said, Be of good cheer, Paul: for as thou hast testified of me in Jerusalem, so must thou bear witness also at Rome.

BAN ¹² Mais, quand le jour fut venu, les Juifs, ayant fait un complot, firent des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, disant qu'ils ne mangeraient ni ne boiraient qu'ils n'eussent tué Paul.

KJV ¹² And when it was day, certain of the Jews banded together, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink till they had killed Paul.

BAN ¹³ Or ils étaient plus de quarante qui avaient fait cette conjuration,

KJV ¹³ And they were more than forty which had made this conspiracy.

BAN ¹⁴ et, s'étant rendus vers les principaux sacrificateurs et les anciens, ils dirent : Nous avons juré, avec des imprécations contre nous-mêmes, de ne rien manger que nous n'ayons tué Paul.

KJV ¹⁴ And they came to the chief priests and elders, and said, We have bound ourselves under a great curse, that we will eat nothing until we have slain Paul.

BAN ¹⁵ Vous donc maintenant intervenez, avec le sanhédrin, auprès du tribun, afin qu'il le fasse amener devant vous, comme si vous vouliez vous informer plus exactement de son affaire ; et nous, avant qu'il approche, nous sommes prêts à le tuer.

KJV ¹⁵ Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

BAN ¹⁶ Mais le fils de la soeur de Paul, ayant ouï parler du guet-apens, vint, et étant entré dans la forteresse, le rapporta à Paul.

KJV ¹⁶ And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

BAN ¹⁷ Et Paul ayant appelé un des centeniers, lui dit : Mène ce jeune homme vers le tribun, car il a quelque chose à lui rapporter.

KJV ¹⁷ Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

BAN ¹⁸ Il le prit donc avec lui et le mena vers le tribun, et dit : Le prisonnier Paul m'a appelé et m'a prié de t'amener ce jeune homme qui a quelque chose à te dire.

KJV ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

BAN ¹⁹ ? Et le tribun le prenant par la main et s'étant retiré à l'écart, lui demandait : Qu'est-ce que tu as à me rapporter ?

KJV ¹⁹ Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that thou hast to tell me?

BAN ²⁰ Et il dit : Les Juifs ont résolu de te prier de faire descendre demain Paul dans le sanhédrin, sous prétexte de s'informer plus exactement de son affaire.

KJV ²⁰ And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring down Paul to morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

BAN ²¹ Toi donc, ne te fie pas à eux ; car plus de quarante d'entre eux lui dressent un guet-apens et se sont engagés, avec des imprécations contre eux-mêmes, à ne manger ni boire qu'ils ne l'aient tué ; et maintenant ils sont prêts, attendant ta promesse.

KJV ²¹ But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them more than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neither eat nor drink till they have killed him: and now are they ready, looking for a promise from thee.

BAN ²² Le tribun renvoya le jeune homme, après lui avoir donné cet ordre : Ne dis à personne que tu m'as fait connaître ces choses.

KJV ²² So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, See thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

BAN ²³ Et ayant appelé deux des centeniers, il dit : Tenez prêts, dès la troisième heure de la nuit, deux cents soldats, soixante et dix cavaliers, et deux cents archers, pour aller jusqu'à Césarée.

KJV ²³ And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

BAN ²⁴ Et il leur commanda de préparer des montures, afin qu'ayant mis Paul dessus, ils le mènent sain et sauf au gouverneur Félix.

KJV ²⁴ And provide them beasts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.

BAN ²⁵ Il écrivit une lettre en ces termes :

BAN ²⁶ Claude Lysias, au très excellent gouverneur Félix, salut !

KJV ²⁶ Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sendeth greeting.

BAN ²⁷ Cet homme avait été saisi par les Juifs et allait être tué par eux, quand je suis survenu avec la troupe et le leur ai arraché, ayant appris qu'il était Romain.

KJV ²⁷ This man was taken of the Jews, and should have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman.

BAN ²⁸ Et voulant connaître le motif pour lequel ils l'accusaient, je l'ai fait descendre dans leur sanhédrin.

KJV ²⁸ And when I would have known the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him forth into their council:

BAN ²⁹ J'ai trouvé qu'il était accusé au sujet de questions de leur loi, mais qu'il n'était l'objet d'aucune imputation qui méritât la mort ou les liens.

KJV ²⁹ Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds.

BAN ³⁰ Et ayant été averti qu'un guet-apens devait être dressé contre cet homme, je l'ai aussitôt envoyé auprès de toi, ayant aussi fait savoir à ses accusateurs qu'ils eussent à parler contre lui devant toi.

KJV ³⁰ And when it was told me how that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent straightway to thee, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before thee what they had against him. Farewell.

BAN ³¹ Les soldats donc, selon l'ordre qu'ils avaient reçu, prirent Paul et le menèrent de nuit à Antipatris.

KJV ³¹ Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

BAN ³² Et le lendemain, ayant laissé les cavaliers s'en aller avec lui, ils s'en retournèrent à la forteresse.

KJV ³² On the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle:

BAN ³³ Les cavaliers étant arrivés à Césarée, et ayant remis la lettre au gouverneur, lui présentèrent aussi Paul.

KJV ³³ Who, when they came to Caesarea and delivered the epistle to the governor, presented Paul also before him.

BAN ³⁴ Et quand il l'eut lue, il lui demanda de quelle province il était ; et ayant appris qu'il était de Cilicie,

KJV ³⁴ And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia;

BAN ³⁵ il lui dit : Je t'entendrai quand tes accusateurs seront aussi venus. Et il ordonna qu'il fût gardé dans le prétoire d'Hérode.

KJV ³⁵ I will hear thee, said he, when thine accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.
