S21 ¹ Souviens-toi de ton créateur durant ta jeunesse, avant l'arrivée des jours mauvais, avant d'atteindre les années où tu diras: «Je n'y prends aucun plaisir.»

WLC ¹ וּזְכֹר֙ אֶת־ בּ֣וֹרְאֶ֔יךָ בִּימֵ֖י בְּחוּרֹתֶ֑יךָ עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹא־ יָבֹ֙אוּ֙ יְמֵ֣י הָֽרָעָ֔ה וְהִגִּ֣יעוּ שָׁנִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאמַ֔ר אֵֽין־ לִ֥י בָהֶ֖ם חֵֽפֶץ׃

KJV ² While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain:

S21 ² C'est le moment où
le soleil et la lumière,
la lune et les étoiles s'obscurcissent,
et où les nuages reviennent juste après la pluie.

WLC ² עַ֠ד אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־ תֶחְשַׁ֤ךְ הַשֶּׁ֙מֶשׁ֙ וְהָא֔וֹר וְהַיָּרֵ֖חַ וְהַכּוֹכָבִ֑ים וְשָׁ֥בוּ הֶעָבִ֖ים אַחַ֥ר הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃

KJV ³ In the day when the keepers of the house shall tremble, and the strong men shall bow themselves, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows be darkened,

S21 ³ C'est l'époque
où les gardiens de la maison tremblent,
où les hommes forts se courbent,
où celles qui broient interrompent leur tâche
parce qu'elles sont trop peu nombreuses,
où ceux qui regardent par les fenêtres s'obscurcissent.

WLC ³ בַּיּ֗וֹם שֶׁיָּזֻ֙עוּ֙ שֹׁמְרֵ֣י הַבַּ֔יִת וְהִֽתְעַוְּת֖וּ אַנְשֵׁ֣י הֶחָ֑יִל וּבָטְל֤וּ הַטֹּֽחֲנוֹת֙ כִּ֣י מִעֵ֔טוּ וְחָשְׁכ֥וּ הָרֹא֖וֹת בָּאֲרֻבּֽוֹת׃

KJV ⁴ And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of musick shall be brought low;

S21 ⁴ C'est l'époque où
les deux battants de la porte se ferment sur la rue
tandis que le bruit de la meule diminue,
où l'on se lève au chant de l'oiseau,
où toutes les chanteuses s'affaiblissent.

WLC ⁴ וְסֻגְּר֤וּ דְלָתַ֙יִם֙ בַּשּׁ֔וּק בִּשְׁפַ֖ל ק֣וֹל הַֽטַּחֲנָ֑ה וְיָקוּם֙ לְק֣וֹל הַצִּפּ֔וֹר וְיִשַּׁ֖חוּ כָּל־ בְּנ֥וֹת הַשִּֽׁיר׃

KJV ⁵ Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

S21 ⁵ C'est l'époque où
l'on redoute ce qui est haut,
où l'on a des terreurs en chemin,
où l'amandier fleurit,
où la sauterelle devient lourde
et où la câpre n'a plus d'effet,
car l'homme s'en va vers son habitation éternelle
et les pleureurs parcourent les rues. 

WLC ⁵ גַּ֣ם מִגָּבֹ֤הַּ יִרָ֙אוּ֙ וְחַתְחַתִּ֣ים בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְיָנֵ֤אץ הַשָּׁקֵד֙ וְיִסְתַּבֵּ֣ל הֶֽחָגָ֔ב וְתָפֵ֖ר הָֽאֲבִיּוֹנָ֑ה כִּֽי־ הֹלֵ֤ךְ הָאָדָם֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית עוֹלָמ֔וֹ וְסָבְב֥וּ בָשּׁ֖וּק הַסֹּפְדִֽים׃

KJV ⁶ Or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern.

S21 ⁶ Souviens-toi de ton créateur
avant que le cordon d'argent ne se détache,
que le vase d'or ne se brise,
que la cruche ne se casse à la source
et que la poulie ne tombe, rompue, dans le puits,

WLC ⁶ עַ֣ד אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ חֶ֣בֶל הַכֶּ֔סֶף וְתָרֻ֖ץ גֻּלַּ֣ת הַזָּהָ֑ב וְתִשָּׁ֤בֶר כַּד֙ עַל־ הַמַּבּ֔וּעַ וְנָרֹ֥ץ הַגַּלְגַּ֖ל אֶל־ הַבּֽוֹר׃

KJV ⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

S21 ⁷ avant que la poussière ne retourne à la terre,
comme elle y était,
et que l'esprit ne retourne à Dieu,
celui qui l'a donné!

WLC ⁷ וְיָשֹׁ֧ב הֶעָפָ֛ר עַל־ הָאָ֖רֶץ כְּשֶׁהָיָ֑ה וְהָר֣וּחַ תָּשׁ֔וּב אֶל־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נְתָנָֽהּ׃

KJV ⁸ Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity.

S21 ⁸ Comble de l'inconsistance,
dit l'Ecclésiaste,

KJV ⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

S21 ⁹ L'Ecclésiaste n'a pas seulement été un sage, il a aussi enseigné la connaissance au peuple et il a examiné, recherché, mis en ordre un grand nombre de proverbes.

WLC ⁹ וְיֹתֵ֕ר שֶׁהָיָ֥ה קֹהֶ֖לֶת חָכָ֑ם ע֗וֹד לִמַּד־ דַּ֙עַת֙ אֶת־ הָעָ֔ם וְאִזֵּ֣ן וְחִקֵּ֔ר תִּקֵּ֖ן מְשָׁלִ֥ים הַרְבֵּֽה׃

KJV ¹⁰ The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

S21 ¹⁰ L'Ecclésiaste s'est efforcé de trouver des paroles agréables, des écrits pleins de droiture et des paroles vraies.

KJV ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.

S21 ¹¹ Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons et, rassemblées en un recueil, elles sont comme des clous plantés; elles sont données par un seul berger.

WLC ¹¹ דִּבְרֵ֤י חֲכָמִים֙ כַּדָּ֣רְבֹנ֔וֹת וּֽכְמַשְׂמְר֥וֹת נְטוּעִ֖ים בַּעֲלֵ֣י אֲסֻפּ֑וֹת נִתְּנ֖וּ מֵרֹעֶ֥ה אֶחָֽד׃

KJV ¹² And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

S21 ¹² Attention, mon fils, à ce qui pourrait y être ajouté! On n'en finirait pas, si l'on voulait faire un grand nombre de livres, et beaucoup d'étude fatigue le corps.

WLC ¹² וְיֹתֵ֥ר מֵהֵ֖מָּה בְּנִ֣י הִזָּהֵ֑ר עֲשׂ֨וֹת סְפָרִ֤ים הַרְבֵּה֙ אֵ֣ין קֵ֔ץ וְלַ֥הַג הַרְבֵּ֖ה יְגִעַ֥ת בָּשָֽׂר׃

KJV ¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

S21 ¹³ Ecoutons la conclusion de tout ce discours: «Crains Dieu et respecte ses commandements, car c'est ce que doit faire tout homme.

WLC ¹³ ס֥וֹף דָּבָ֖ר הַכֹּ֣ל נִשְׁמָ֑ע אֶת־ הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים יְרָא֙ וְאֶת־ מִצְוֺתָ֣יו שְׁמ֔וֹר כִּי־ זֶ֖ה כָּל־ הָאָדָֽם׃

KJV ¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

S21 ¹⁴ En effet, Dieu amènera toute œuvre en jugement, et ce jugement portera sur tout ce qui est caché, que ce soit bon ou mauvais.»

WLC ¹⁴ כִּ֤י אֶת־ כָּל־ מַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים יָבִ֥א בְמִשְׁפָּ֖ט עַ֣ל כָּל־ נֶעְלָ֑ם אִם־ ט֖וֹב וְאִם־ רָֽע׃
