KJV ³ I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

KJV ⁴ I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:

S21 ⁴ Je me suis lancé dans de grandes entreprises: je me suis construit des maisons, je me suis planté des vignes,

WLC ⁴ הִגְדַּ֖לְתִּי מַעֲשָׂ֑י בָּנִ֤יתִי לִי֙ בָּתִּ֔ים נָטַ֥עְתִּי לִ֖י כְּרָמִֽים׃

KJV ⁵ I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:

KJV ⁷ I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

S21 ⁷ J'ai acheté des serviteurs et des servantes; j'en ai eu d'autres, nés chez moi. J'ai aussi possédé des troupeaux de bœufs et de brebis, plus que n'importe qui avant moi à Jérusalem.

KJV ⁸ I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

S21 ⁸ J'ai même amassé de l'argent et de l'or, les richesses des rois et des provinces. Je me suis procuré des chanteurs et des chanteuses et ce qui fait le plaisir des hommes: des concubines en quantité.

KJV ⁹ So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

S21 ⁹ Je suis devenu grand, plus grand que n'importe qui avant moi à Jérusalem, sans rien perdre de ma sagesse.

KJV ¹⁰ And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.

S21 ¹⁰ Je n'ai rien refusé à mes yeux de tout ce qu'ils réclamaient, je n'ai privé mon cœur d'aucune joie. En effet, mon cœur était réjoui par tout mon travail, et c'est toute la part que j'en ai retirée.

KJV ¹¹ Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

S21 ¹¹ Puis j'ai réfléchi à tout ce que mes mains avaient entrepris, à la peine que j'avais eue pour le faire, et j'ai constaté que tout n'est que fumée et revient à poursuivre le vent. Il n'y a aucun avantage à retirer
de ce qu'on fait sous le soleil.

KJV ¹² And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.

S21 ¹² J'ai réfléchi à ce qui caractérise la sagesse, la folie et la stupidité. – En effet, que fera l'homme qui succédera au roi? N'est-ce pas ce qu'on a déjà fait? –

WLC ¹² וּפָנִ֤יתִֽי אֲנִי֙ לִרְא֣וֹת חָכְמָ֔ה וְהוֹלֵל֖וֹת וְסִכְל֑וּת כִּ֣י ׀ מֶ֣ה הָאָדָ֗ם שֶׁיָּבוֹא֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ כְּבָ֖ר עָשֽׂוּהוּ׃

KJV ¹³ Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

S21 ¹³ J'ai vu que la sagesse a sur la folie le même avantage que la lumière sur l'obscurité:

WLC ¹³ וְרָאִ֣יתִי אָ֔נִי שֶׁיֵּ֥שׁ יִתְר֛וֹן לַֽחָכְמָ֖ה מִן־ הַסִּכְל֑וּת כִּֽיתְר֥וֹן הָא֖וֹר מִן־ הַחֹֽשֶׁךְ׃

KJV ¹⁴ The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

S21 ¹⁴ le sage a ses yeux bien en place, tandis que l'homme stupide marche dans l'obscurité. Toutefois, j'ai aussi reconnu que le même sort est réservé à l'un et à l'autre,

WLC ¹⁴ הֶֽחָכָם֙ עֵינָ֣יו בְּרֹאשׁ֔וֹ וְהַכְּסִ֖יל בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ הוֹלֵ֑ךְ וְיָדַ֣עְתִּי גַם־ אָ֔נִי שֶׁמִּקְרֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד יִקְרֶ֥ה אֶת־ כֻּלָּֽם׃

KJV ¹⁵ Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.

S21 ¹⁵ et je me suis dit dans mon cœur: «J'aurai le même sort que l'homme stupide. A quoi m'a-t-il donc servi d'être plus sage que lui?» Et je me suis dit dans mon cœur: «C'est encore de la fumée.»

WLC ¹⁵ וְאָמַ֨רְתִּֽי אֲנִ֜י בְּלִבִּ֗י כְּמִקְרֵ֤ה הַכְּסִיל֙ גַּם־ אֲנִ֣י יִקְרֵ֔נִי וְלָ֧מָּה חָכַ֛מְתִּי אֲנִ֖י אָ֣ז יוֹתֵ֑ר וְדִבַּ֣רְתִּי בְלִבִּ֔י שֶׁגַּם־ זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל׃

KJV ¹⁶ For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

S21 ¹⁶ En effet, le souvenir que l'on garde du sage n'est pas plus durable que celui que l'on garde de l'homme stupide, puisque, dès les jours suivants, tout est oublié. Comment se fait-il que le sage meure tout comme l'homme stupide?

WLC ¹⁶ כִּי֩ אֵ֨ין זִכְר֧וֹן לֶחָכָ֛ם עִֽם־ הַכְּסִ֖יל לְעוֹלָ֑ם בְּשֶׁכְּבָ֞ר הַיָּמִ֤ים הַבָּאִים֙ הַכֹּ֣ל נִשְׁכָּ֔ח וְאֵ֛יךְ יָמ֥וּת הֶחָכָ֖ם עִֽם־ הַכְּסִֽיל׃

KJV ¹⁷ Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

S21 ¹⁷ Alors j'ai détesté la vie. Oui, ce qui se fait sous le soleil m'a déplu, car tout n'est que fumée et revient à poursuivre le vent.

KJV ¹⁸ Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

S21 ¹⁸ J'ai détesté tout le travail que j'ai accompli sous le soleil et dont je dois laisser la jouissance à l'homme qui me succédera.

KJV ¹⁹ And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

S21 ¹⁹ Et qui sait s'il sera sage ou fou? Pourtant, il sera maître de tout mon travail, de tout le fruit de ma sagesse sous le soleil. Cela aussi, c'est de la fumée.

KJV ²⁰ Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.

S21 ²⁰ J'en suis venu à désespérer à cause de toute la peine que je me suis donnée sous le soleil.

WLC ²⁰ וְסַבּ֥וֹתִֽי אֲנִ֖י לְיַאֵ֣שׁ אֶת־ לִבִּ֑י עַ֚ל כָּל־ הֶ֣עָמָ֔ל שֶׁעָמַ֖לְתִּי תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

KJV ²¹ For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

S21 ²¹ En effet, un homme peut travailler avec sagesse, savoir-faire et succès, et il doit laisser le produit de son travail à un homme qui ne s'est donné aucune peine pour cela. Cela aussi, c'est de la fumée et c'est un grand malheur.

WLC ²¹ כִּי־ יֵ֣שׁ אָדָ֗ם שֶׁעֲמָל֛וֹ בְּחָכְמָ֥ה וּבְדַ֖עַת וּבְכִשְׁר֑וֹן וּלְאָדָ֞ם שֶׁלֹּ֤א עָֽמַל־ בּוֹ֙ יִתְּנֶ֣נּוּ חֶלְק֔וֹ גַּם־ זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וְרָעָ֥ה רַבָּֽה׃

KJV ²² For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?

S21 ²² Oui, que retire l'homme de tout son travail et des préoccupations de son cœur, alors qu'il se donne tant de peine pour cela sous le soleil?

WLC ²² כִּ֠י מֶֽה־ הֹוֶ֤ה לָֽאָדָם֙ בְּכָל־ עֲמָל֔וֹ וּבְרַעְי֖וֹן לִבּ֑ו שֶׁה֥וּא עָמֵ֖ל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

KJV ²³ For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

S21 ²³ Ses journées ne sont toutes que souffrance et son activité n'est que chagrin. Même la nuit, son cœur ne connaît pas le repos. Cela aussi, c'est de la fumée.

WLC ²³ כִּ֧י כָל־ יָמָ֣יו מַכְאֹבִ֗ים וָכַ֙עַס֙ עִנְיָנ֔וֹ גַּם־ בַּלַּ֖יְלָה לֹא־ שָׁכַ֣ב לִבּ֑וֹ גַּם־ זֶ֖ה הֶ֥בֶל הֽוּא׃

KJV ²⁴ There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

S21 ²⁴ Le seul bonheur, pour l'homme, consiste à manger, à boire et à se donner du plaisir dans son travail, mais cela aussi, je l'ai bien vu moi-même, dépend de Dieu.

WLC ²⁴ אֵֽין־ ט֤וֹב בָּאָדָם֙ שֶׁיֹּאכַ֣ל וְשָׁתָ֔ה וְהֶרְאָ֧ה אֶת־ נַפְשׁ֛וֹ ט֖וֹב בַּעֲמָל֑וֹ גַּם־ זֹה֙ רָאִ֣יתִי אָ֔נִי כִּ֛י מִיַּ֥ד הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים הִֽיא׃

KJV ²⁵ For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?

S21 ²⁵ En effet, qui peut manger et jouir de quelque chose, en dehors de moi?

WLC ²⁵ כִּ֣י מִ֥י יֹאכַ֛ל וּמִ֥י יָח֖וּשׁ ח֥וּץ מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

KJV ²⁶ For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

S21 ²⁶ Oui, à l'homme qui lui est agréable il donne la sagesse, la connaissance et la joie, mais au pécheur il réserve la tâche de récolter et d'amasser des biens afin de les donner à celui qui est agréable à Dieu. Cela aussi, c'est de la fumée et cela revient à poursuivre le vent.
