DRB ¹ Et je me suis tourné, et j'ai regardé toutes les oppressions qui se font sous le soleil ; et voici les larmes des opprimés, et il n'y a point pour eux de consolateur ! Et la force est dans la main de leurs oppresseurs, et il n'y a point pour eux de consolateur !

KJV ¹ So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter.

WLC ¹ וְשַׁ֣בְתִּֽי אֲנִ֗י וָאֶרְאֶה֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הָ֣עֲשֻׁקִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשִׂ֖ים תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ דִּמְעַ֣ת הָעֲשֻׁקִ֗ים וְאֵ֤ין לָהֶם֙ מְנַחֵ֔ם וּמִיַּ֤ד עֹֽשְׁקֵיהֶם֙ כֹּ֔חַ וְאֵ֥ין לָהֶ֖ם מְנַחֵֽם׃

DRB ² C'est pourquoi j'estime heureux les morts qui sont déjà morts, plutôt que les vivants qui sont encore vivants,

KJV ² Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive.

WLC ² וְשַׁבֵּ֧חַ אֲנִ֛י אֶת־ הַמֵּתִ֖ים שֶׁכְּבָ֣ר מֵ֑תוּ מִן־ הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֛ר הֵ֥מָּה חַיִּ֖ים עֲדֶֽנָה׃

DRB ³ et plus heureux encore que tous les deux celui qui n'a pas encore été, qui n'a pas vu le mauvais travail qui se fait sous le soleil.

KJV ³ Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.

WLC ³ וְטוֹב֙ מִשְּׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ עֲדֶ֖ן לֹ֣א הָיָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־ רָאָה֙ אֶת־ הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה הָרָ֔ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

DRB ⁴ Et j'ai vu tout le labeur et toute l'habileté dans le travail : que c'est une jalousie de l'un contre l'autre. Cela aussi est vanité et poursuite du vent.

KJV ⁴ Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

WLC ⁴ וְרָאִ֨יתִֽי אֲנִ֜י אֶת־ כָּל־ עָמָ֗ל וְאֵת֙ כָּל־ כִּשְׁר֣וֹן הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂ֔ה כִּ֛י הִ֥יא קִנְאַת־ אִ֖ישׁ מֵרֵעֵ֑הוּ גַּם־ זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ׃

DRB ⁵ Le sot se croise les mains, et mange sa propre chair.

KJV ⁵ The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

WLC ⁵ הַכְּסִיל֙ חֹבֵ֣ק אֶת־ יָדָ֔יו וְאֹכֵ֖ל אֶת־ בְּשָׂרֽוֹ׃

DRB ⁶ Mieux vaut le creux de la main rempli, et le repos, que les deux mains pleines, avec le travail et la poursuite du vent.

KJV ⁶ Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.

WLC ⁶ ט֕וֹב מְלֹ֥א כַ֖ף נָ֑חַת מִמְּלֹ֥א חָפְנַ֛יִם עָמָ֖ל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ׃

DRB ⁷ Et je me tournai, et je vis la vanité sous le soleil :

KJV ⁷ Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun.

WLC ⁷ וְשַׁ֧בְתִּי אֲנִ֛י וָאֶרְאֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

DRB ⁸ tel est seul sans qu'il y ait de second : il n'a pas non plus de fils ni de frère, et il n'y a pas de fin à tout son labeur ; son œil n'est pas non plus rassasié par la richesse, et [il ne se dit pas] : Pour qui donc est-ce que je me tourmente et que je prive mon âme de bonheur ? Cela aussi est une vanité et une ingrate occupation.

KJV ⁸ There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he hath neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither saith he, For whom do I labour, and bereave my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

WLC ⁸ יֵ֣שׁ אֶחָד֩ וְאֵ֨ין שֵׁנִ֜י גַּ֣ם בֵּ֧ן וָאָ֣ח אֵֽין־ ל֗וֹ וְאֵ֥ין קֵץ֙ לְכָל־ עֲמָל֔וֹ גַּם־ לֹא־ תִשְׂבַּ֣ע עֹ֑שֶׁר וּלְמִ֣י ׀ אֲנִ֣י עָמֵ֗ל וּמְחַסֵּ֤ר אֶת־ נַפְשִׁי֙ מִטּוֹבָ֔ה גַּם־ זֶ֥ה הֶ֛בֶל וְעִנְיַ֥ן רָ֖ע הֽוּא׃

DRB ⁹ Deux valent mieux qu'un ; car ils ont un bon salaire de leur travail.

KJV ⁹ Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour.

WLC ⁹ טוֹבִ֥ים הַשְּׁנַ֖יִם מִן־ הָאֶחָ֑ד אֲשֶׁ֧ר יֵשׁ־ לָהֶ֛ם שָׂכָ֥ר ט֖וֹב בַּעֲמָלָֽם׃

DRB ¹⁰ Car, s'ils tombent, l'un relèvera son compagnon ; mais malheur à celui qui est seul, et qui tombe, et qui n'a pas de second pour le relever !

KJV ¹⁰ For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.

WLC ¹⁰ כִּ֣י אִם־ יִפֹּ֔לוּ הָאֶחָ֖ד יָקִ֣ים אֶת־ חֲבֵר֑וֹ וְאִ֣יל֗וֹ הָֽאֶחָד֙ שֶׁיִּפּ֔וֹל וְאֵ֥ין שֵׁנִ֖י לַהֲקִימֽוֹ׃

DRB ¹¹ De même, si l'on couche à deux, on a de la chaleur ; mais celui qui est seul, comment aura-t-il chaud ?

KJV ¹¹ Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?

WLC ¹¹ גַּ֛ם אִם־ יִשְׁכְּב֥וּ שְׁנַ֖יִם וְחַ֣ם לָהֶ֑ם וּלְאֶחָ֖ד אֵ֥יךְ יֵחָֽם׃

DRB ¹² Et si quelqu'un a le dessus sur un seul, les deux lui tiendront tête ; et la corde triple ne se rompt pas vite.

KJV ¹² And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

WLC ¹² וְאִֽם־ יִתְקְפוֹ֙ הָאֶחָ֔ד הַשְּׁנַ֖יִם יַעַמְד֣וּ נֶגְדּ֑וֹ וְהַחוּט֙ הַֽמְשֻׁלָּ֔שׁ לֹ֥א בִמְהֵרָ֖ה יִנָּתֵֽק׃

DRB ¹³ Mieux vaut un jeune garçon pauvre et sage, qu'un roi vieux et sot qui ne sait plus être averti.

KJV ¹³ Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

WLC ¹³ ט֛וֹב יֶ֥לֶד מִסְכֵּ֖ן וְחָכָ֑ם מִמֶּ֤לֶךְ זָקֵן֙ וּכְסִ֔יל אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־ יָדַ֥ע לְהִזָּהֵ֖ר עֽוֹד׃

DRB ¹⁴ Car il est sorti de la maison des prisonniers pour régner, lors même qu'il est né pauvre dans son royaume.

KJV ¹⁴ For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.

WLC ¹⁴ כִּֽי־ מִבֵּ֥ית הָסוּרִ֖ים יָצָ֣א לִמְלֹ֑ךְ כִּ֛י גַּ֥ם בְּמַלְכוּת֖וֹ נוֹלַ֥ד רָֽשׁ׃

DRB ¹⁵ J'ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil, avec le jeune garçon, le second, qui occupera sa place.

KJV ¹⁵ I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.

WLC ¹⁵ רָאִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת־ כָּל־ הַ֣חַיִּ֔ים הַֽמְהַלְּכִ֖ים תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ עִ֚ם הַיֶּ֣לֶד הַשֵּׁנִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַעֲמֹ֖ד תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

DRB ¹⁶ Il n'y a pas de fin à tout le peuple, à tous ceux qui ont été devant eux ; cependant ceux qui viendront après ne se réjouiront point en lui. Car cela aussi est vanité et poursuite du vent.

KJV ¹⁶ There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

WLC ¹⁷ שְׁמֹ֣ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר תֵּלֵךְ֙ אֶל־ בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְקָר֣וֹב לִשְׁמֹ֔עַ מִתֵּ֥ת הַכְּסִילִ֖ים זָ֑בַח כִּֽי־ אֵינָ֥ם יוֹדְעִ֖ים לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָֽע׃
