BAN ¹ Prends garde à tes pieds quand tu te rends à la maison de Dieu. S'en approcher pour écouter vaut mieux que d'offrir le sacrifice des insensés, qui ne savent pas qu'ils font mal.

KJV ¹ Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

WLC ¹ אַל־ תְּבַהֵ֨ל עַל־ פִּ֜יךָ וְלִבְּךָ֧ אַל־ יְמַהֵ֛ר לְהוֹצִ֥יא דָבָ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים בַּשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ וְאַתָּ֣ה עַל־ הָאָ֔רֶץ עַֽל־ כֵּ֛ן יִהְי֥וּ דְבָרֶ֖יךָ מְעַטִּֽים׃

BAN ² Ne te hâte pas d'ouvrir la bouche et que ton coeur ne se presse pas de proférer des paroles devant Dieu, car Dieu est au ciel, et toi sur la terre. Que tes paroles soient donc peu nombreuses.

KJV ² Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

WLC ² כִּ֛י בָּ֥א הַחֲל֖וֹם בְּרֹ֣ב עִנְיָ֑ן וְק֥וֹל כְּסִ֖יל בְּרֹ֥ב דְּבָרִֽים׃

BAN ³ Car de la multitude des occupations viennent les rêves, et de la multitude des paroles les propos insensés.

KJV ³ For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words.

WLC ³ כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ תִּדֹּ֨ר נֶ֜דֶר לֵֽאלֹהִ֗ים אַל־ תְּאַחֵר֙ לְשַׁלְּמ֔וֹ כִּ֛י אֵ֥ין חֵ֖פֶץ בַּכְּסִילִ֑ים אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ תִּדֹּ֖ר שַׁלֵּֽם׃

BAN ⁴ Quand tu fais un voeu à Dieu, ne diffère pas de l'accomplir, car il ne prend point plaisir aux insensés. Le voeu que tu as prononcé, accomplis-le !

KJV ⁴ When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.

WLC ⁴ ט֖וֹב אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־ תִדֹּ֑ר מִשֶׁתִּדּ֖וֹר וְלֹ֥א תְשַׁלֵּֽם׃

BAN ⁵ Il vaut mieux que tu ne fasses pas de voeux, que d'en faire et de ne pas les accomplir.

KJV ⁵ Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.

WLC ⁵ אַל־ תִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־ פִּ֙יךָ֙ לַחֲטִ֣יא אֶת־ בְּשָׂרֶ֔ךָ וְאַל־ תֹּאמַר֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמַּלְאָ֔ךְ כִּ֥י שְׁגָגָ֖ה הִ֑יא לָ֣מָּה יִקְצֹ֤ף הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ עַל־ קוֹלֶ֔ךָ וְחִבֵּ֖ל אֶת־ מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדֶֽיךָ׃

BAN ⁶ Ne permets pas à ta bouche d'attirer des châtiments sur ta chair, et ne dis pas devant l'envoyé [de Dieu] : C'était une erreur ! Pourquoi Dieu devrait-il s'irriter pour un propos de ta part, et détruire l'oeuvre de tes mains ?

KJV ⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

WLC ⁶ כִּ֣י בְרֹ֤ב חֲלֹמוֹת֙ וַהֲבָלִ֔ים וּדְבָרִ֖ים הַרְבֵּ֑ה כִּ֥י אֶת־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יְרָֽא׃

BAN ⁷ Car si dans le grand nombre des rêves il y a des vanités, il y en a aussi dans le grand nombre des paroles. C'est pourquoi crains Dieu !

KJV ⁷ For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God.

WLC ⁷ אִם־ עֹ֣שֶׁק רָ֠שׁ וְגֵ֨זֶל מִשְׁפָּ֤ט וָצֶ֙דֶק֙ תִּרְאֶ֣ה בַמְּדִינָ֔ה אַל־ תִּתְמַ֖הּ עַל־ הַחֵ֑פֶץ כִּ֣י גָבֹ֜הַּ מֵעַ֤ל גָּבֹ֙הַ֙ שֹׁמֵ֔ר וּגְבֹהִ֖ים עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

BAN ⁸ Si tu vois dans la province l'oppression du pauvre et la violation du droit et de la justice, n'en sois point effrayé, car sur un homme élevé veille un homme plus élevé, et sur eux un plus élevé encore.

KJV ⁸ If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they.

WLC ⁸ וְיִתְר֥וֹן אֶ֖רֶץ בַּכֹּ֣ל מֶ֥לֶךְ לְשָׂדֶ֖ה נֶעֱבָֽד׃

BAN ⁹ Et c'est l'avantage d'un pays à tous égards qu'un roi protecteur des champs.

KJV ⁹ Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field.

WLC ⁹ אֹהֵ֥ב כֶּ֙סֶף֙ לֹא־ יִשְׂבַּ֣ע כֶּ֔סֶף וּמִֽי־ אֹהֵ֥ב בֶּהָמ֖וֹן לֹ֣א תְבוּאָ֑ה גַּם־ זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל׃

BAN ¹⁰ Celui qui aime l'argent n'est jamais rassasié d'argent, et celui qui aime les richesses n'en retire pas de profit. Ceci aussi est une vanité.

KJV ¹⁰ He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.

WLC ¹⁰ בִּרְבוֹת֙ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה רַבּ֖וּ אוֹכְלֶ֑יהָ וּמַה־ כִּשְׁרוֹן֙ לִבְעָלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֖י אִם־ עֵינָֽיו׃

BAN ¹¹ Quand le bien abonde, abondent aussi ceux qui le mangent, et quel autre avantage en a le possesseur que de voir cela de ses yeux ?

KJV ¹¹ When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?

BAN ¹² Doux est le sommeil du travailleur, qu'il ait peu ou beaucoup mangé ; mais la satiété du riche ne lui permet pas de dormir.

KJV ¹² The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

WLC ¹² יֵ֚שׁ רָעָ֣ה חוֹלָ֔ה רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ עֹ֛שֶׁר שָׁמ֥וּר לִבְעָלָ֖יו לְרָעָתֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹³ Il est un mal fâcheux que j'ai vu sous le soleil : des richesses gardées par leur possesseur pour son malheur.

KJV ¹³ There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt.

WLC ¹³ וְאָבַ֛ד הָעֹ֥שֶׁר הַה֖וּא בְּעִנְיַ֣ן רָ֑ע וְהוֹלִ֣יד בֵּ֔ן וְאֵ֥ין בְּיָד֖וֹ מְאֽוּמָה׃

BAN ¹⁴ Cette richesse se perd par quelque événement funeste, et le fils qu'il aura engendré n'en aura rien.

KJV ¹⁴ But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand.

WLC ¹⁴ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר יָצָא֙ מִבֶּ֣טֶן אִמּ֔וֹ עָר֛וֹם יָשׁ֥וּב לָלֶ֖כֶת כְּשֶׁבָּ֑א וּמְא֙וּמָה֙ לֹא־ יִשָּׂ֣א בַעֲמָל֔וֹ שֶׁיֹּלֵ֖ךְ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁵ Sorti nu du sein de sa mère, il s'en retourne comme il était venu, et de tout son travail il n'est rien qu'il puisse emporter avec lui.

KJV ¹⁵ As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

BAN ¹⁶ C'est là aussi un mal fâcheux, qu'il s'en aille tout comme il était venu ; et quel profit lui revient-il d'avoir travaillé pour le vent ?

KJV ¹⁶ And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind?

BAN ¹⁷ Avec cela toute sa vie il mange dans les ténèbres, plein de chagrin, de malaise et d'aigreur.

KJV ¹⁷ All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness.

WLC ¹⁷ הִנֵּ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־ רָאִ֣יתִי אָ֗נִי ט֣וֹב אֲשֶׁר־ יָפֶ֣ה לֶֽאֶכוֹל־ וְ֠לִשְׁתּוֹת וְלִרְא֨וֹת טוֹבָ֜ה בְּכָל־ עֲמָל֣וֹ ׀ שֶׁיַּעֲמֹ֣ל תַּֽחַת־ הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ מִסְפַּ֧ר יְמֵי־ אֲשֶׁר־ נָֽתַן־ ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים כִּי־ ה֥וּא חֶלְקֽוֹ׃

BAN ¹⁸ Voici ce que j'ai reconnu : il est bon et convenable de manger et de boire et de jouir du bien-être, au milieu de tout le labeur auquel l'homme se livre sous le soleil, durant le nombre des jours que Dieu lui donne. Car c'est là sa part.

KJV ¹⁸ Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.

WLC ¹⁸ גַּ֣ם כָּֽל־ הָאָדָ֡ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָֽתַן־ ל֣וֹ הָאֱלֹהִים֩ עֹ֨שֶׁר וּנְכָסִ֜ים וְהִשְׁלִיט֨וֹ לֶאֱכֹ֤ל מִמֶּ֙נּוּ֙ וְלָשֵׂ֣את אֶת־ חֶלְק֔וֹ וְלִשְׂמֹ֖חַ בַּעֲמָל֑וֹ זֹ֕ה מַתַּ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים הִֽיא׃

BAN ¹⁹ De même, toutes les fois que Dieu donne à un homme des richesses et des trésors, et lui permet d'en goûter, d'en prendre sa part et de se réjouir de son labeur, c'est là un don de Dieu.

KJV ¹⁹ Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

WLC ¹⁹ כִּ֚י לֹ֣א הַרְבֵּ֔ה יִזְכֹּ֖ר אֶת־ יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֑יו כִּ֧י הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים מַעֲנֶ֖ה בְּשִׂמְחַ֥ת לִבּֽוֹ׃

BAN ²⁰ Car l'homme ne se préoccupe pas trop des jours de sa vie, parce que Dieu lui répond en réjouissant son coeur.

KJV ²⁰ For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.
