DRB ¹ Il y a un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil, et qui est fréquent* parmi les hommes :

WLC ¹ יֵ֣שׁ רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְרַבָּ֥ה הִ֖יא עַל־ הָאָדָֽם׃

DRB ² il y a tel homme à qui Dieu donne de la richesse, et des biens, et de l'honneur, et il ne manque rien à son âme de tout ce qu'il désire ; et Dieu ne lui a pas donné le pouvoir d'en manger, car un étranger s'en repaît. Cela est une vanité et un mal douloureux.

KJV ² A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

VULC ² vir cui dedit Deus divitias,
et substantiam, et honorem,
et nihil deest animæ suæ ex omnibus quæ desiderat ;

DRB ³ Si un homme engendre cent [fils], et qu'il vive beaucoup d'années, et que les jours de ses années soient en grand nombre, et que son âme ne soit pas rassasiée de bien, et aussi qu'il n'ait pas de sépulture, je dis que mieux vaut un avorton que lui ;

KJV ³ If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

VULC ³ Si genuerit quispiam centum liberos,

DRB ⁴ car celui-ci vient dans la vanité, et il s'en va dans les ténèbres, et son nom est couvert de ténèbres ;

KJV ⁴ For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

VULC ⁴ Frustra enim venit,
et pergit ad tenebras,
et oblivione delebitur nomen ejus.

WLC ⁴ כִּֽי־ בַהֶ֥בֶל בָּ֖א וּבַחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יֵלֵ֑ךְ וּבַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ שְׁמ֥וֹ יְכֻסֶּֽה׃

DRB ⁵ et aussi il n'a pas vu et n'a pas connu le soleil : celui-ci a plus de repos que celui-là.

KJV ⁵ Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

VULC ⁵ Non vidit solem,
neque cognovit distantiam boni et mali.

WLC ⁵ גַּם־ שֶׁ֥מֶשׁ לֹא־ רָאָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יָדָ֑ע נַ֥חַת לָזֶ֖ה מִזֶּֽה׃

DRB ⁶ Et s'il vivait deux fois mille ans, il n'aura pas vu la bonheur : tous* ne vont-ils pas en un même lieu ?

KJV ⁶ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

VULC ⁶ Etiam si duobus millibus annis vixerit,
et non fuerit perfruitus bonis,
nonne ad unum locum properant omnia ?

WLC ⁶ וְאִלּ֣וּ חָיָ֗ה אֶ֤לֶף שָׁנִים֙ פַּעֲמַ֔יִם וְטוֹבָ֖ה לֹ֣א רָאָ֑ה הֲלֹ֛א אֶל־ מָק֥וֹם אֶחָ֖ד הַכֹּ֥ל הוֹלֵֽךְ׃

DRB ⁷ Tout le travail de l'homme est pour sa bouche, et cependant son désir n'est pas satisfait*.

KJV ⁷ All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

VULC ⁷ Omnis labor hominis in ore ejus ;
sed anima ejus non implebitur.

WLC ⁷ כָּל־ עֲמַ֥ל הָאָדָ֖ם לְפִ֑יהוּ וְגַם־ הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ לֹ֥א תִמָּלֵֽא׃

DRB ⁸ Car quel avantage le sage a-t-il sur le sot ? Quel [avantage] a l'affligé qui sait marcher devant les vivants ?

KJV ⁸ For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

VULC ⁸ Quid habet amplius sapiens a stulto ?
et quid pauper, nisi ut pergat illuc ubi est vita ?

WLC ⁸ כִּ֛י מַה־ יּוֹתֵ֥ר לֶחָכָ֖ם מִֽן־ הַכְּסִ֑יל מַה־ לֶּעָנִ֣י יוֹדֵ֔עַ לַהֲלֹ֖ךְ נֶ֥גֶד הַחַיִּֽים׃

DRB ⁹ Mieux vaut la vue des yeux que le mouvement du désir. Cela aussi est vanité et poursuite du vent.

KJV ⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

VULC ⁹ Melius est videre quod cupias,
quam desiderare quod nescias.
Sed et hoc vanitas est, et præsumptio spiritus.

WLC ⁹ ט֛וֹב מַרְאֵ֥ה עֵינַ֖יִם מֵֽהֲלָךְ־ נָ֑פֶשׁ גַּם־ זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ׃

DRB ¹⁰ Ce qui existe a déjà été appelé de son nom ; et on sait ce qu'est l'homme, et qu'il ne peut contester avec celui qui est plus fort que lui.

KJV ¹⁰ That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

VULC ¹⁰ Qui futurus est, jam vocatum est nomen ejus ;
et scitur quod homo sit,
et non possit contra fortiorem se in judicio contendere.

WLC ¹⁰ מַה־ שֶּֽׁהָיָ֗ה כְּבָר֙ נִקְרָ֣א שְׁמ֔וֹ וְנוֹדָ֖ע אֲשֶׁר־ ה֣וּא אָדָ֑ם וְלֹא־ יוּכַ֣ל לָדִ֔ין עִ֥ם מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

DRB ¹¹ Car il y a beaucoup de choses qui multiplient la vanité : quel avantage en a l'homme ?

KJV ¹¹ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

VULC ¹¹ Verba sunt plurima,
multamque in disputando habentia vanitatem.]

WLC ¹¹ כִּ֛י יֵשׁ־ דְּבָרִ֥ים הַרְבֵּ֖ה מַרְבִּ֣ים הָ֑בֶל מַה־ יֹּתֵ֖ר לָאָדָֽם׃

DRB ¹² Car qui sait ce qui est bon pour l'homme dans la vie, tous les jours de la vie de sa vanité, qu'il passe comme une ombre ? Et qui déclarera à l'homme ce qui sera après lui sous le soleil ?

KJV ¹² For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

WLC ¹² כִּ֣י מִֽי־ יוֹדֵעַ֩ מַה־ טּ֨וֹב לָֽאָדָ֜ם בַּֽחַיִּ֗ים מִסְפַּ֛ר יְמֵי־ חַיֵּ֥י הֶבְל֖וֹ וְיַעֲשֵׂ֣ם כַּצֵּ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ מִֽי־ יַגִּ֣יד לָֽאָדָ֔ם מַה־ יִּהְיֶ֥ה אַחֲרָ֖יו תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
