KJV ¹ There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

VULC ¹ [Est et aliud malum quod vidi sub sole,
et quidem frequens apud homines :

WLC ¹ יֵ֣שׁ רָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר רָאִ֖יתִי תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ וְרַבָּ֥ה הִ֖יא עַל־ הָאָדָֽם׃

KJV ² A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

S21 ² Dieu a pu donner des richesses, des biens et de la gloire à un homme, et rien de ce qu'il désire ne lui manque, mais Dieu ne lui laisse pas le pouvoir d'en jouir. Oui, c'est un étranger qui en jouira. C'est de la fumée et c'est un mal douloureux.

VULC ² vir cui dedit Deus divitias,
et substantiam, et honorem,
et nihil deest animæ suæ ex omnibus quæ desiderat ;
nec tribuit ei potestatem Deus ut comedat ex eo,
sed homo extraneus vorabit illud :
hoc vanitas et miseria magna est.

WLC ² אִ֣ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתֶּן־ ל֣וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֡ים עֹשֶׁר֩ וּנְכָסִ֨ים וְכָב֜וֹד וְֽאֵינֶ֨נּוּ חָסֵ֥ר לְנַפְשׁ֣וֹ ׀ מִכֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־ יִתְאַוֶּ֗ה וְלֹֽא־ יַשְׁלִיטֶ֤נּוּ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ לֶאֱכֹ֣ל מִמֶּ֔נּוּ כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ נָכְרִ֖י יֹֽאכֲלֶ֑נּוּ זֶ֥ה הֶ֛בֶל וָחֳלִ֥י רָ֖ע הֽוּא׃

KJV ³ If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

S21 ³ Même si un homme avait 100 fils et vivait un grand nombre d'années, même s'il prolongeait son existence, si son âme ne s'est pas rassasiée de bonheur et si, de plus, il n'a pas de sépulture, j'affirme qu'un enfant mort-né est plus heureux que lui.

VULC ³ Si genuerit quispiam centum liberos,
et vixerit multos annos,
et plures dies ætatis habuerit,
et anima illius non utatur bonis substantiæ suæ,
sepulturaque careat :
de hoc ego pronuntio quod melior illo sit abortivus.

WLC ³ אִם־ יוֹלִ֣יד אִ֣ישׁ מֵאָ֡ה וְשָׁנִים֩ רַבּ֨וֹת יִֽחְיֶ֜ה וְרַ֣ב ׀ שֶׁיִּהְי֣וּ יְמֵֽי־ שָׁנָ֗יו וְנַפְשׁוֹ֙ לֹא־ תִשְׂבַּ֣ע מִן־ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה וְגַם־ קְבוּרָ֖ה לֹא־ הָ֣יְתָה לּ֑וֹ אָמַ֕רְתִּי ט֥וֹב מִמֶּ֖נּוּ הַנָּֽפֶל׃

KJV ⁴ For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

S21 ⁴ En effet, il est venu comme une vapeur et repart dans l'obscurité, et son nom restera sous un voile d'obscurité;

VULC ⁴ Frustra enim venit,
et pergit ad tenebras,
et oblivione delebitur nomen ejus.

WLC ⁴ כִּֽי־ בַהֶ֥בֶל בָּ֖א וּבַחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יֵלֵ֑ךְ וּבַחֹ֖שֶׁךְ שְׁמ֥וֹ יְכֻסֶּֽה׃

KJV ⁵ Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

S21 ⁵ il n'a pas vu, pas connu le soleil, et il a plus de repos que cet homme.

VULC ⁵ Non vidit solem,
neque cognovit distantiam boni et mali.

WLC ⁵ גַּם־ שֶׁ֥מֶשׁ לֹא־ רָאָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א יָדָ֑ע נַ֥חַת לָזֶ֖ה מִזֶּֽה׃

KJV ⁶ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

S21 ⁶ A quoi bon vivre deux fois 1000 ans sans jouir du bonheur? Tous ne vont-ils pas au même endroit?

VULC ⁶ Etiam si duobus millibus annis vixerit,
et non fuerit perfruitus bonis,
nonne ad unum locum properant omnia ?

WLC ⁶ וְאִלּ֣וּ חָיָ֗ה אֶ֤לֶף שָׁנִים֙ פַּעֲמַ֔יִם וְטוֹבָ֖ה לֹ֣א רָאָ֑ה הֲלֹ֛א אֶל־ מָק֥וֹם אֶחָ֖ד הַכֹּ֥ל הוֹלֵֽךְ׃

KJV ⁷ All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

S21 ⁷ Tout le travail de l'homme est pour sa bouche, et pourtant ses désirs ne sont jamais satisfaits.

VULC ⁷ Omnis labor hominis in ore ejus ;
sed anima ejus non implebitur.

WLC ⁷ כָּל־ עֲמַ֥ל הָאָדָ֖ם לְפִ֑יהוּ וְגַם־ הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ לֹ֥א תִמָּלֵֽא׃

KJV ⁸ For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

S21 ⁸ En effet, quel avantage le sage a-t-il sur l'homme stupide? A quoi sert-il à un pauvre de savoir se conduire dans la vie?

VULC ⁸ Quid habet amplius sapiens a stulto ?
et quid pauper, nisi ut pergat illuc ubi est vita ?

WLC ⁸ כִּ֛י מַה־ יּוֹתֵ֥ר לֶחָכָ֖ם מִֽן־ הַכְּסִ֑יל מַה־ לֶּעָנִ֣י יוֹדֵ֔עַ לַהֲלֹ֖ךְ נֶ֥גֶד הַחַיִּֽים׃

KJV ⁹ Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

S21 ⁹ Ce que les yeux voient est préférable à ce que recherche l'âme. Cela aussi, c'est de la fumée et cela revient à poursuivre le vent.

VULC ⁹ Melius est videre quod cupias,
quam desiderare quod nescias.
Sed et hoc vanitas est, et præsumptio spiritus.

WLC ⁹ ט֛וֹב מַרְאֵ֥ה עֵינַ֖יִם מֵֽהֲלָךְ־ נָ֑פֶשׁ גַּם־ זֶ֥ה הֶ֖בֶל וּרְע֥וּת רֽוּחַ׃

KJV ¹⁰ That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

S21 ¹⁰ Ce qui existe a déjà été appelé par son nom, et l'on sait ce qu'est l'homme: il est incapable de contester avec celui qui est plus fort que lui.

VULC ¹⁰ Qui futurus est, jam vocatum est nomen ejus ;
et scitur quod homo sit,
et non possit contra fortiorem se in judicio contendere.

WLC ¹⁰ מַה־ שֶּֽׁהָיָ֗ה כְּבָר֙ נִקְרָ֣א שְׁמ֔וֹ וְנוֹדָ֖ע אֲשֶׁר־ ה֣וּא אָדָ֑ם וְלֹא־ יוּכַ֣ל לָדִ֔ין עִ֥ם מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

KJV ¹¹ Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

S21 ¹¹ S'il y a beaucoup de paroles, il y a beaucoup d'absurdités. Quel avantage l'homme en retire-t-il?

VULC ¹¹ Verba sunt plurima,
multamque in disputando habentia vanitatem.]

WLC ¹¹ כִּ֛י יֵשׁ־ דְּבָרִ֥ים הַרְבֵּ֖ה מַרְבִּ֣ים הָ֑בֶל מַה־ יֹּתֵ֖ר לָאָדָֽם׃

KJV ¹² For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

S21 ¹² Qui sait en effet ce qui est bon pour l'homme dans la vie, tout au long de sa vie sans consistance qu'il traverse comme une ombre? Et qui peut annoncer à l'homme ce qui existera après lui sous le soleil?

WLC ¹² כִּ֣י מִֽי־ יוֹדֵעַ֩ מַה־ טּ֨וֹב לָֽאָדָ֜ם בַּֽחַיִּ֗ים מִסְפַּ֛ר יְמֵי־ חַיֵּ֥י הֶבְל֖וֹ וְיַעֲשֵׂ֣ם כַּצֵּ֑ל אֲשֶׁר֙ מִֽי־ יַגִּ֣יד לָֽאָדָ֔ם מַה־ יִּהְיֶ֥ה אַחֲרָ֖יו תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃
