KJV ¹ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

VULC ¹ Quæ cum audisset Mardochæus, scidit vestimenta sua, et indutus est sacco, spargens cinerem capiti : et in platea mediæ civitatis voce magna clamabat, ostendens amaritudinem animi sui,

KJV ² And came even before the king's gate: for none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.

MAR ² Et il vint jusqu'au devant de la porte du Roi ; (car il n'était point permis d'entrer dans la porte du Roi étant vêtu d'un sac).

VULC ² et hoc ejulatu usque ad fores palatii gradiens. Non enim erat licitum indutum sacco aulam regis intrare.

KJV ³ And in every province, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

MAR ³ Et en chaque province, dans les lieux où la parole du Roi et son ordonnance parvint, les Juifs furent en grand deuil, jeûnant, pleurant, et se lamentant ; et plusieurs se couchaient sur le sac, et sur la cendre.

VULC ³ In omnibus quoque provinciis, oppidis, ac locis, ad quæ crudele regis dogma pervenerat, planctus ingens erat apud Judæos, jejunium, ululatus, et fletus, sacco et cinere multis pro strato utentibus.

KJV ⁴ So Esther's maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.

MAR ⁴ Or les demoiselles d'Esther, et ses Eunuques vinrent et lui rapportèrent ces choses, et la Reine fut fort affligée, et elle envoya des vêtements pour en vêtir Mardochée, et afin qu'il ôtât son sac de dessus lui ; mais il ne [les] prit point.

VULC ⁴ Ingressæ autem sunt puellæ Esther et eunuchi, nuntiaveruntque ei. Quod audiens consternata est, et vestem misit, ut ablato sacco induerent eum : quam accipere noluit.

KJV ⁵ Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king's chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.

MAR ⁵ Alors Esther appela Hatach l'un des Eunuques du Roi, lequel il avait établi pour la servir, et elle lui donna charge de savoir de Mardochée, ce que c'était, et pourquoi il en usait ainsi.

VULC ⁵ Accitoque Athach eunucho, quem rex ministrum ei dederat, præcepit ei ut iret ad Mardochæum, et disceret ab eo cur hoc faceret.

KJV ⁶ So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king's gate.

MAR ⁶ Hatach donc sortit vers Mardochée en la place de la ville, qui était au devant de la porte du Roi.

VULC ⁶ Egressusque Athach, ivit ad Mardochæum stantem in platea civitatis, ante ostium palatii :

KJV ⁷ And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

MAR ⁷ Et Mardochée lui déclara tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et l'offre de l'argent comptant qu'Haman avait promis de délivrer au trésor du Roi, à cause des Juifs, afin qu'on les détruisît.

VULC ⁷ qui indicavit ei omnia quæ acciderant : quomodo Aman promisisset ut in thesauros regis pro Judæorum nece inferret argentum.

KJV ⁸ Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.

MAR ⁸ Et il lui donna une copie de l'ordonnance qui avait été mise par écrit, et qui avait été publiée dans Susan, afin de les exterminer, pour [la] montrer à Esther, et lui faire entendre le tout, et lui recommander d'entrer chez le Roi pour lui demander grâce, et lui faire requête pour sa nation.

VULC ⁸ Exemplar quoque edicti, quod pendebat in Susan, dedit ei, ut reginæ ostenderet, et moneret eam ut intraret ad regem et deprecaretur eum pro populo suo.

KJV ⁹ And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

MAR ⁹ Ainsi Hatach revint, et rapporta à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.

KJV ¹⁰ Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;

VULC ¹⁰ Quæ respondit ei, et jussit ut diceret Mardochæo :

KJV ¹¹ All the king's servants, and the people of the king's provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or women, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

MAR ¹¹ Tous les serviteurs du Roi, et le peuple des provinces du Roi savent qu'il n'y a ni homme, ni femme qui entre chez le Roi au parvis de dedans, sans y être appelé, [et] que c'est une de ses lois, de le faire mourir ; à moins que le Roi ne lui ait tendu le sceptre d'or, car en ce cas-là il a la vie sauve ; or il y a déjà trente jours que je n'ai point été appelée pour entrer chez le Roi.

VULC ¹¹ Omnes servi regis, et cunctæ, quæ sub ditione ejus sunt, norunt provinciæ, quod sive vir, sive mulier non vocatus, interius atrium regis intraverit, absque ulla cunctatione statim interficiatur : nisi forte rex auream virgam ad eum tetenderit pro signo clementiæ, atque ita possit vivere. Ego igitur quomodo ad regem intrare potero, quæ triginta jam diebus non sum vocata ad eum ?

KJV ¹² And they told to Mordecai Esther's words.

KJV ¹³ Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king's house, more than all the Jews.

MAR ¹³ Et Mardochée dit qu'on fit cette réponse à Esther : Ne pense pas en toi-même que [toi seule] d'entre tous les Juifs échappes dans la maison du Roi.

VULC ¹³ rursum mandavit Esther, dicens : Ne putes quod animam tuam tantum liberes, quia in domo regis es præ cunctis Judæis :

KJV ¹⁴ For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

MAR ¹⁴ Mais si tu te tais entièrement en ce temps-ci, les Juifs respireront et seront délivrés par quelque autre moyen ; mais vous périrez, toi et la maison de ton père. Et qui sait si tu n'es point parvenue au Royaume pour un temps comme celui-ci ?

VULC ¹⁴ si enim nunc silueris, per aliam occasionem liberabuntur Judæi : et tu, et domus patris tui, peribitis. Et quis novit utrum idcirco ad regnum veneris, ut in tali tempore parareris ?

KJV ¹⁵ Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,

KJV ¹⁶ Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.

MAR ¹⁶ Va, assemble tous les Juifs qui se trouveront à Susan, et jeûnez pour moi, et ne mangez et ne buvez de trois jours, tant la nuit que le jour ; et moi et mes demoiselles nous jeûnerons de même ; puis je m'en irai ainsi vers le Roi, ce qui n'est point selon la Loi ; et s'il arrive que je périsse, que je périsse.

VULC ¹⁶ Vade, et congrega omnes Judæos quos in Susan repereris, et orate pro me. Non comedatis et non bibatis tribus diebus et tribus noctibus : et ego cum ancillis meis similiter jejunabo, et tunc ingrediar ad regem contra legem faciens, non vocata, tradensque me morti et periculo.

KJV ¹⁷ So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
