Ex 2 (Darby)

   ¹ Et un homme de la maison de Lévi alla, et prit une fille de Lévi ; ² et la femme conçut, et enfanta un fils ; et elle vit qu'il était beau ; et elle le cacha trois mois*. ³ Et comme elle ne pouvait plus le cacher, elle prit pour lui un coffret de joncs, et l'enduisit de bitume et de poix, et mit dedans l'enfant, et le posa parmi les roseaux sur le bord du fleuve. ⁴ Et sa sœur se tint à distance pour savoir ce qu'on lui ferait.
   ⁵ Et la fille du Pharaon descendit au fleuve pour se laver, et ses jeunes filles se promenaient sur le bord du fleuve ; et elle vit le coffret au milieu des roseaux, et elle envoya sa servante, qui le prit ; ⁶ et elle l'ouvrit, et vit l'enfant ; et voici, c'était un petit garçon qui pleurait. Et elle eut compassion de lui, et dit : C'est un des enfants des Hébreux. ⁷ Et sa sœur dit à la fille du Pharaon : Irai-je et appellerai-je auprès de toi une nourrice d'entre les Hébreues, et elle t'allaitera l'enfant ? ⁸ Et la fille du Pharaon lui dit : Va. Et la jeune fille alla, et appela la mère de l'enfant. ⁹ Et la fille du Pharaon lui dit : Emporte cet enfant, et allaite-le pour moi, et je te donnerai ton salaire. ¹⁰ Et la femme prit l'enfant, et l'allaita. Et l'enfant grandit, et elle l'amena à la fille du Pharaon, et il fut son fils ; et elle appela son nom Moïse*, et dit : Car je l'ai tiré des eaux.
   ¹¹ Et il arriva, en ces jours-là, que Moïse, étant devenu grand, sortit vers ses frères ; et il vit leurs fardeaux. Et il vit un homme égyptien qui frappait un Hébreu d'entre ses frères ; ¹² et il regarda çà et là, et vit qu'il n'y avait personne, et il frappa l'Égyptien, et le cacha dans le sable. ¹³ Et il sortit le second jour ; et voici, deux hommes hébreux se querellaient. Et il dit au coupable : Pourquoi frappes-tu ton compagnon ? ¹⁴ Et il dit : Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous ? Est-ce que tu veux* me tuer, comme tu as tué l'Égyptien ? Et Moïse eut peur, et dit : Certainement le fait est connu. ¹⁵ Et le Pharaon apprit la chose, et chercha à tuer Moïse ; mais Moïse s'enfuit de devant le Pharaon, et habita dans le pays de Madian. * Et il s'assit près d'un puits ;
   ¹⁶ or le sacrificateur de Madian avait sept filles ; et elles vinrent, et puisèrent, et emplirent les auges pour abreuver le bétail de leur père. ¹⁷ Et les bergers vinrent, et les chassèrent ; et Moïse se leva, et les secourut, et abreuva leur bétail. ¹⁸ Et elles vinrent vers Rehuel, leur père ; et il dit : Pourquoi êtes-vous venues sitôt aujourd'hui ? ¹⁹ Et elles dirent : Un homme égyptien nous a délivrées de la main des bergers, et il aussi puisé abondamment pour nous, et a abreuvé le bétail. ²⁰ Et il dit à ses filles. Où est-il donc ? Pourquoi avez-vous laissé là cet homme ? Appelez-le, et qu'il mange du pain. ²¹ Et Moïse consentit à habiter avec lui* ; et il donna Séphora**, sa fille, à Moïse. ²² Et elle enfanta un fils, et il appela son nom Guershom* ; car, dit-il, j'ai séjourné dans un pays étranger.
   ²³ Et il arriva en ces jours, qui furent nombreux, que le roi d'Égypte mourut ; et les fils d'Israël soupirèrent à cause de leur service, et ils crièrent ; et leur cri monta vers Dieu à cause de leur service. ²⁴ Et Dieu ouït leur gémissement, et Dieu se souvint de son alliance avec Abraham, avec Isaac, et avec Jacob. ²⁵ Et Dieu regarda les fils d'Israël, et Dieu connut [leur état].

   ¹ And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. ² And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. ³ And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river's brink. ⁴ And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him.
   ⁵ And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river's side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. ⁶ And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. ⁷ Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? ⁸ And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child's mother. ⁹ And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the women took the child, and nursed it. ¹⁰ And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
   ¹¹ And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. ¹² And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. ¹³ And when he went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove together: and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest thou thy fellow? ¹⁴ And he said, Who made thee a prince and a judge over us? intendest thou to kill me, as thou killedst the Egyptian? And Moses feared, and said, Surely this thing is known. ¹⁵ Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian: and he sat down by a well.
   ¹⁶ Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. ¹⁷ And the shepherds came and drove them away: but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock. ¹⁸ And when they came to Reuel their father, he said, How is it that ye are come so soon to day? ¹⁹ And they said, An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock. ²⁰ And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread. ²¹ And Moses was content to dwell with the man: and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter. ²² And she bare him a son, and he called his name Gershom: for he said, I have been a stranger in a strange land.
   ²³ And it came to pass in process of time, that the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. ²⁴ And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. ²⁵ And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them.

   ³ Cumque jam celare non posset, sumpsit fiscellam scirpeam, et linivit eam bitumine ac pice : posuitque intus infantulum, et exposuit eum in carecto ripæ fluminis,
   ⁴ stante procul sorore ejus, et considerante eventum rei.
   ⁵ Ecce autem descendebat filia Pharaonis ut lavaretur in flumine : et puellæ ejus gradiebantur per crepidinem alvei. Quæ cum vidisset fiscellam in papyrione, misit unam e famulabus suis : et allatam
   ⁶ aperiens, cernensque in ea parvulum vagientem, miserta ejus, ait : De infantibus Hebræorum est hic.

   ⁸ Respondit : Vade. Perrexit puella et vocavit matrem suam.
   ⁹ Ad quam locuta filia Pharaonis : Accipe, ait, puerum istum, et nutri mihi : ego dabo tibi mercedem tuam. Suscepit mulier, et nutrivit puerum : adultumque tradidit filiæ Pharaonis.
   ¹⁰ Quem illa adoptavit in locum filii, vocavitque nomen ejus Moyses, dicens : Quia de aqua tuli eum.
   ¹¹ In diebus illis postquam creverat Moyses, egressus est ad fratres suos : viditque afflictionem eorum, et virum ægyptium percutientem quemdam de Hebræis fratribus suis.
   ¹² Cumque circumspexisset huc atque illuc, et nullum adesse vidisset, percussum Ægyptium abscondit sabulo.
   ¹³ Et egressus die altero conspexit duos Hebræos rixantes : dixitque ei qui faciebat injuriam : Quare percutis proximum tuum ?
   ¹⁴ Qui respondit : Quis te constituit principem et judicem super nos ? num occidere me tu vis, sicut heri occidisti Ægyptium ? Timuit Moyses, et ait : Quomodo palam factum est verbum istud ?
   ¹⁵ Audivitque Pharao sermonem hunc, et quærebat occidere Moysen : qui fugiens de conspectu ejus, moratus est in terra Madian, et sedit juxta puteum.
   ¹⁶ Erant autem sacerdoti Madian septem filiæ, quæ venerunt ad hauriendam aquam : et impletis canalibus adaquare cupiebant greges patris sui.
   ¹⁷ Supervenere pastores, et ejecerunt eas : surrexitque Moyses, et defensis puellis, adaquavit oves earum.
   ¹⁸ Quæ cum revertissent ad Raguel patrem suum, dixit ad eas : Cur velocius venistis solito ?
   ¹⁹ Responderunt : Vir ægyptius liberavit nos de manu pastorum : insuper et hausit aquam nobiscum, potumque dedit ovibus.
   ²⁰ At ille : Ubi est ? inquit : quare dimisistis hominem ? vocate eum ut comedat panem.
   ²¹ Juravit ergo Moyses quod habitaret cum eo. Accepitque Sephoram filiam ejus uxorem :
   ²² quæ peperit ei filium, quem vocavit Gersam, dicens : Advena fui in terra aliena. Alterum vero peperit, quem vocavit Eliezer, dicens : Deus enim patris mei adjutor meus eripuit me de manu Pharaonis.
   ²³ Post multum vero temporis mortuus est rex Ægypti : et ingemiscentes filii Israël, propter opera vociferati sunt : ascenditque clamor eorum ad Deum ab operibus.
   ²⁴ Et audivit gemitum eorum, ac recordatus est fœderis quod pepigit cum Abraham, Isaac et Jacob.
   ²⁵ Et respexit Dominus filios Israël et cognovit eos.
