KJV ¹ And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

KJV ² And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

VULC ² Cumque proficiscerentur de oriente, invenerunt campum in terra Sennaar, et habitaverunt in eo.

WLC ² וַֽיְהִ֖י בְּנָסְעָ֣ם מִקֶּ֑דֶם וַֽיִּמְצְא֥וּ בִקְעָ֛ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שִׁנְעָ֖ר וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ שָֽׁם׃

KJV ³ And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

VULC ³ Dixitque alter ad proximum suum : Venite, faciamus lateres, et coquamus eos igni. Habueruntque lateres pro saxis, et bitumen pro cæmento :

WLC ³ וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־ רֵעֵ֗הוּ הָ֚בָה נִלְבְּנָ֣ה לְבֵנִ֔ים וְנִשְׂרְפָ֖ה לִשְׂרֵפָ֑ה וַתְּהִ֨י לָהֶ֤ם הַלְּבֵנָה֙ לְאָ֔בֶן וְהַ֣חֵמָ֔ר הָיָ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם לַחֹֽמֶר׃

KJV ⁴ And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

VULC ⁴ et dixerunt : Venite, faciamus nobis civitatem et turrim, cujus culmen pertingat ad cælum : et celebremus nomen nostrum antequam dividamur in universas terras.

WLC ⁴ וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ הָ֣בָה ׀ נִבְנֶה־ לָּ֣נוּ עִ֗יר וּמִגְדָּל֙ וְרֹאשׁ֣וֹ בַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנַֽעֲשֶׂה־ לָּ֖נוּ שֵׁ֑ם פֶּן־ נָפ֖וּץ עַל־ פְּנֵ֥י כָל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃

KJV ⁵ And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

VULC ⁵ Descendit autem Dominus ut videret civitatem et turrim, quam ædificabant filii Adam,

WLC ⁵ וַיֵּ֣רֶד יְהוָ֔ה לִרְאֹ֥ת אֶת־ הָעִ֖יר וְאֶת־ הַמִּגְדָּ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנ֖וּ בְּנֵ֥י הָאָדָֽם׃

KJV ⁶ And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

VULC ⁶ et dixit : Ecce, unus est populus, et unum labium omnibus : cœperuntque hoc facere, nec desistent a cogitationibus suis, donec eas opere compleant.

WLC ⁶ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֗ה הֵ֣ן עַ֤ם אֶחָד֙ וְשָׂפָ֤ה אַחַת֙ לְכֻלָּ֔ם וְזֶ֖ה הַחִלָּ֣ם לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת וְעַתָּה֙ לֹֽא־ יִבָּצֵ֣ר מֵהֶ֔ם כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָזְמ֖וּ לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

KJV ⁷ Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

VULC ⁷ Venite igitur, descendamus, et confundamus ibi linguam eorum, ut non audiat unusquisque vocem proximi sui.

WLC ⁷ הָ֚בָה נֵֽרְדָ֔ה וְנָבְלָ֥ה שָׁ֖ם שְׂפָתָ֑ם אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א יִשְׁמְע֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ שְׂפַ֥ת רֵעֵֽהוּ׃

KJV ⁸ So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

VULC ⁸ Atque ita divisit eos Dominus ex illo loco in universas terras, et cessaverunt ædificare civitatem.

WLC ⁸ וַיָּ֨פֶץ יְהוָ֥ה אֹתָ֛ם מִשָּׁ֖ם עַל־ פְּנֵ֣י כָל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וַֽיַּחְדְּל֖וּ לִבְנֹ֥ת הָעִֽיר׃

KJV ⁹ Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

VULC ⁹ Et idcirco vocatum est nomen ejus Babel, quia ibi confusum est labium universæ terræ : et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem cunctarum regionum.

WLC ⁹ עַל־ כֵּ֞ן קָרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ בָּבֶ֔ל כִּי־ שָׁ֛ם בָּלַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה שְׂפַ֣ת כָּל־ הָאָ֑רֶץ וּמִשָּׁם֙ הֱפִיצָ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה עַל־ פְּנֵ֖י כָּל־ הָאָֽרֶץ׃

KJV ¹⁰ These are the generations of Shem: Shem was an hundred years old, and begat Arphaxad two years after the flood:

VULC ¹⁰ Hæ sunt generationes Sem : Sem erat centum annorum quando genuit Arphaxad, biennio post diluvium.

KJV ¹¹ And Shem lived after he begat Arphaxad five hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ¹¹ Vixitque Sem, postquam genuit Arphaxad, quingentis annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ¹¹ וַֽיְחִי־ שֵׁ֗ם אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־ אַרְפַּכְשָׁ֔ד חֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹² And Arphaxad lived five and thirty years, and begat Salah:

VULC ¹² Porro Arphaxad vixit triginta quinque annis, et genuit Sale.

WLC ¹² וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֣ד חַ֔י חָמֵ֥שׁ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ שָֽׁלַח׃

KJV ¹³ And Arphaxad lived after he begat Salah four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ¹³ Vixitque Arphaxad, postquam genuit Sale, trecentis tribus annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ¹³ וַֽיְחִ֣י אַרְפַּכְשַׁ֗ד אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־ שֶׁ֔לַח שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹⁴ And Salah lived thirty years, and begat Eber:

VULC ¹⁴ Sale quoque vixit triginta annis, et genuit Heber.

WLC ¹⁴ וְשֶׁ֥לַח חַ֖י שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ עֵֽבֶר׃

KJV ¹⁵ And Salah lived after he begat Eber four hundred and three years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ¹⁵ Vixitque Sale, postquam genuit Heber, quadringentis tribus annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ¹⁵ וַֽיְחִי־ שֶׁ֗לַח אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־ עֵ֔בֶר שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹⁶ And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begat Peleg:

VULC ¹⁶ Vixit autem Heber triginta quatuor annis, et genuit Phaleg.

WLC ¹⁶ וַֽיְחִי־ עֵ֕בֶר אַרְבַּ֥ע וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ פָּֽלֶג׃

KJV ¹⁷ And Eber lived after he begat Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ¹⁷ Et vixit Heber postquam genuit Phaleg, quadringentis triginta annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ¹⁷ וַֽיְחִי־ עֵ֗בֶר אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־ פֶּ֔לֶג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ¹⁸ And Peleg lived thirty years, and begat Reu:

VULC ¹⁸ Vixit quoque Phaleg triginta annis, et genuit Reu.

WLC ¹⁸ וַֽיְחִי־ פֶ֖לֶג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ רְעֽוּ׃

KJV ¹⁹ And Peleg lived after he begat Reu two hundred and nine years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ¹⁹ Vixitque Phaleg, postquam genuit Reu, ducentis novem annis : et genuit filios et filias.

KJV ²⁰ And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begat Serug:

WLC ²⁰ וַיְחִ֣י רְע֔וּ שְׁתַּ֥יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ שְׂרֽוּג׃

KJV ²¹ And Reu lived after he begat Serug two hundred and seven years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ²¹ Vixit quoque Reu, postquam genuit Sarug, ducentis septem annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ²¹ וַיְחִ֣י רְע֗וּ אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־ שְׂר֔וּג שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ²² And Serug lived thirty years, and begat Nahor:

VULC ²² Vixit vero Sarug triginta annis, et genuit Nachor.

WLC ²² וַיְחִ֥י שְׂר֖וּג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ נָחֽוֹר׃

KJV ²³ And Serug lived after he begat Nahor two hundred years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ²³ Vixitque Sarug, postquam genuit Nachor, ducentis annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ²³ וַיְחִ֣י שְׂר֗וּג אַחֲרֵ֛י הוֹלִיד֥וֹ אֶת־ נָח֖וֹר מָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ²⁴ And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begat Terah:

VULC ²⁴ Vixit autem Nachor viginti novem annis, et genuit Thare.

WLC ²⁴ וַיְחִ֣י נָח֔וֹר תֵּ֥שַׁע וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־ תָּֽרַח׃

KJV ²⁵ And Nahor lived after he begat Terah an hundred and nineteen years, and begat sons and daughters.

VULC ²⁵ Vixitque Nachor, postquam genuit Thare, centum decem et novem annis : et genuit filios et filias.

WLC ²⁵ וַיְחִ֣י נָח֗וֹר אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־ תֶּ֔רַח תְּשַֽׁע־ עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה וּמְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃

KJV ²⁶ And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

VULC ²⁶ Vixitque Thare septuaginta annis, et genuit Abram, et Nachor, et Aran.

WLC ²⁶ וַֽיְחִי־ תֶ֖רַח שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֙וֹלֶד֙ אֶת־ אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־ נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־ הָרָֽן׃

KJV ²⁷ Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

VULC ²⁷ Hæ sunt autem generationes Thare : Thare genuit Abram, Nachor et Aran. Porro Aran genuit Lot.

WLC ²⁷ וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת תֶּ֔רַח תֶּ֚רַח הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־ אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־ נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־ הָרָ֑ן וְהָרָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־ לֽוֹט׃

KJV ²⁸ And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

VULC ²⁸ Mortuusque est Aran ante Thare patrem suum, in terra nativitatis suæ, in Ur Chaldæorum.

WLC ²⁸ וַיָּ֣מָת הָרָ֔ן עַל־ פְּנֵ֖י תֶּ֣רַח אָבִ֑יו בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מוֹלַדְתּ֖וֹ בְּא֥וּר כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃

KJV ²⁹ And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

VULC ²⁹ Duxerunt autem Abram et Nachor uxores : nomen uxoris Abram, Sarai : et nomen uxoris Nachor, Melcha filia Aran, patris Melchæ, et patris Jeschæ.

WLC ²⁹ וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַבְרָ֧ם וְנָח֛וֹר לָהֶ֖ם נָשִׁ֑ים שֵׁ֤ם אֵֽשֶׁת־ אַבְרָם֙ שָׂרָ֔י וְשֵׁ֤ם אֵֽשֶׁת־ נָחוֹר֙ מִלְכָּ֔ה בַּת־ הָרָ֥ן אֲבִֽי־ מִלְכָּ֖ה וַֽאֲבִ֥י יִסְכָּֽה׃

KJV ³⁰ But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

VULC ³⁰ Erat autem Sarai sterilis, nec habebat liberos.

WLC ³⁰ וַתְּהִ֥י שָׂרַ֖י עֲקָרָ֑ה אֵ֥ין לָ֖הּ וָלָֽד׃

KJV ³¹ And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son's son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

VULC ³¹ Tulit itaque Thare Abram filium suum, et Lot filium Aran, filium filii sui, et Sarai nurum suam, uxorem Abram filii sui, et eduxit eos de Ur Chaldæorum, ut irent in terram Chanaan : veneruntque usque Haran, et habitaverunt ibi.

WLC ³¹ וַיִּקַּ֨ח תֶּ֜רַח אֶת־ אַבְרָ֣ם בְּנ֗וֹ וְאֶת־ ל֤וֹט בֶּן־ הָרָן֙ בֶּן־ בְּנ֔וֹ וְאֵת֙ שָׂרַ֣י כַּלָּת֔וֹ אֵ֖שֶׁת אַבְרָ֣ם בְּנ֑וֹ וַיֵּצְא֨וּ אִתָּ֜ם מֵא֣וּר כַּשְׂדִּ֗ים לָלֶ֙כֶת֙ אַ֣רְצָה כְּנַ֔עַן וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ עַד־ חָרָ֖ן וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ שָֽׁם׃

KJV ³² And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

VULC ³² Et facti sunt dies Thare ducentorum quinque annorum, et mortuus est in Haran.

WLC ³² וַיִּהְי֣וּ יְמֵי־ תֶ֔רַח חָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֥מָת תֶּ֖רַח בְּחָרָֽן׃
