BCC ¹ Jacob reprit sa marche et s'en alla au pays des fils de l'Orient.

KJV ¹ Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east.

WLC ¹ וַיִּשָּׂ֥א יַעֲקֹ֖ב רַגְלָ֑יו וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ אַ֥רְצָה בְנֵי־ קֶֽדֶם׃

BCC ² Il regarda, et voici, il y avait un puits dans la campagne, et voici, il y avait à côté trois troupeaux de brebis qui étaient couchés, car c'était à ce puits qu'on abreuvait les troupeaux, et la pierre qui était sur l'ouverture du puits était grande.

KJV ² And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth.

VULC ² Et vidit puteum in agro, tres quoque greges ovium accubantes juxta eum : nam ex illo adaquabantur pecora, et os ejus grandi lapide claudebatur.

WLC ² וַיַּ֞רְא וְהִנֵּ֧ה בְאֵ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה וְהִנֵּה־ שָׁ֞ם שְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה עֶדְרֵי־ צֹאן֙ רֹבְצִ֣ים עָלֶ֔יהָ כִּ֚י מִן־ הַבְּאֵ֣ר הַהִ֔וא יַשְׁק֖וּ הָעֲדָרִ֑ים וְהָאֶ֥בֶן גְּדֹלָ֖ה עַל־ פִּ֥י הַבְּאֵֽר׃

BCC ³ Là se réunissaient tous les troupeaux ; on roulait la pierre de dessus l'ouverture du puits, on faisait boire les troupeaux, et l'on remettait la pierre à sa place sur l'ouverture du puits.

KJV ³ And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place.

VULC ³ Morisque erat ut cunctis ovibus congregatis devolverent lapidem, et refectis gregibus rursum super os putei ponerent.

WLC ³ וְנֶאֶסְפוּ־ שָׁ֣מָּה כָל־ הָעֲדָרִ֗ים וְגָלֲל֤וּ אֶת־ הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ מֵעַל֙ פִּ֣י הַבְּאֵ֔ר וְהִשְׁק֖וּ אֶת־ הַצֹּ֑אן וְהֵשִׁ֧יבוּ אֶת־ הָאֶ֛בֶן עַל־ פִּ֥י הַבְּאֵ֖ר לִמְקֹמָֽהּ׃

BCC ⁴ Jacob dit aux, bergers : « Mes frères, d'où êtes-vous ? » ils répondirent : « Nous sommes de Haran. »

KJV ⁴ And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we.

VULC ⁴ Dixitque ad pastores : Fratres, unde estis ? Qui responderunt : De Haran.

WLC ⁴ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב אַחַ֖י מֵאַ֣יִן אַתֶּ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֵחָרָ֖ן אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃

BCC ⁵ Il leur dit : « connaissez-vous Laban, fils de Nachor ? » Ils répondirent : « Nous le connaissons. »

KJV ⁵ And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him.

VULC ⁵ Quos interrogans, Numquid, ait, nostis Laban filium Nachor ? Dixerunt : Novimus.

WLC ⁵ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם הַיְדַעְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־ לָבָ֣ן בֶּן־ נָח֑וֹר וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יָדָֽעְנוּ׃

BCC ⁶ Il leur dit : « est-il en bonne santé ? » Ils répondirent : « Il est en bonne santé, et voici Rachel, sa fille, qui vient avec les brebis. »

KJV ⁶ And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.

VULC ⁶ Sanusne est ? inquit. Valet, inquiunt : et ecce Rachel filia ejus venit cum grege suo.

WLC ⁶ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָהֶ֖ם הֲשָׁל֣וֹם ל֑וֹ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ שָׁל֔וֹם וְהִנֵּה֙ רָחֵ֣ל בִּתּ֔וֹ בָּאָ֖ה עִם־ הַצֹּֽאן׃

BCC ⁷ Il dit : « Voici, il est encore grand jour, et ce n'est pas le moment de rassembler les troupeaux ; abreuvez les brebis et retournez les faire paître. »

KJV ⁷ And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them.

VULC ⁷ Dixitque Jacob : Adhuc multum diei superest, nec est tempus ut reducantur ad caulas greges : date ante potum ovibus, et sic eas ad pastum reducite.

WLC ⁷ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֵ֥ן עוֹד֙ הַיּ֣וֹם גָּד֔וֹל לֹא־ עֵ֖ת הֵאָסֵ֣ף הַמִּקְנֶ֑ה הַשְׁק֥וּ הַצֹּ֖אן וּלְכ֥וּ רְעֽוּ׃

BCC ⁸ Ils répondirent : « nous ne le pouvons pas jusqu'à ce que tous les troupeaux soient rassemblés et qu'on roule la pierre de dessus l'ouverture du puits ; alors nous abreuverons les brebis. »

KJV ⁸ And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep.

VULC ⁸ Qui responderunt : Non possumus, donec omnia pecora congregentur, et amoveamus lapidem de ore putei, ut adaquemus greges.

BCC ⁹ Il s'entretenait encore avec eux, lorsque Rachel arriva avec les brebis de son père : car elle était bergère.

KJV ⁹ And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she kept them.

BCC ¹⁰ Dès que Jacob vit Rachel fille de Laban, frère de sa mère, et les brebis de Laban, frère de sa mère, il s'approcha, roula la pierre de dessus l'ouverture du puits, et abreuva les brebis de Laban, frère de sa mère.

KJV ¹⁰ And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.

BCC ¹¹ Et Jacob baisa Rachel et il éleva la voix et pleura.

KJV ¹¹ And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept.

BCC ¹² Jacob apprit à Rachel qu'il était frère de son père, qu'il était fils de Rebecca ; et elle courut l'annoncer à son père.

KJV ¹² And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father.

BCC ¹³ Quand Laban eut entendu parler de Jacob, fils de sa soeur, il courut au-devant de lui, et l'avant pris dans ses bras, il lui donna des baisers et l'amena dans sa maison. Jacob raconta à Laban toutes ces choses,

KJV ¹³ And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things.

BCC ¹⁴ et Laban lui dit : « Oui, tu es mes os et ma chair. » Et Jacob demeura avec lui un mois entier.

KJV ¹⁴ And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

VULC ¹⁴ respondit : Os meum es, et caro mea. Et postquam impleti sunt dies mensis unius,

WLC ¹⁴ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ לָבָ֔ן אַ֛ךְ עַצְמִ֥י וּבְשָׂרִ֖י אָ֑תָּה וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב עִמּ֖וֹ חֹ֥דֶשׁ יָמִֽים׃

BCC ¹⁵ Alors Laban dit à Jacob : « est-ce que, parce que tu es mon frère, tu me serviras pour rien ? Dis-moi quel sera ton salaire. »

KJV ¹⁵ And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?

VULC ¹⁵ dixit ei : Num quia frater meus es, gratis servies mihi ? dic quid mercedis accipias.

WLC ¹⁵ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָבָן֙ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב הֲכִי־ אָחִ֣י אַ֔תָּה וַעֲבַדְתַּ֖נִי חִנָּ֑ם הַגִּ֥ידָה לִּ֖י מַה־ מַּשְׂכֻּרְתֶּֽךָ׃

BCC ¹⁶ Or Laban avait deux filles ; l'aînée se nommait Lia, et la cadette Rachel.

KJV ¹⁶ And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel.

VULC ¹⁶ Habebat vero duas filias : nomen majoris Lia, minor vero appellabatur Rachel.

WLC ¹⁶ וּלְלָבָ֖ן שְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֑וֹת שֵׁ֤ם הַגְּדֹלָה֙ לֵאָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַקְּטַנָּ֖ה רָחֵֽל׃

BCC ¹⁷ Lia avait les yeux malades ; mais Rachel était belle de taille et belle de visage.

KJV ¹⁷ Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured.

BCC ¹⁸ Comme Jacob aimait Rachel il dit : « Je te servirai sept ans pour Rachel, ta fille cadette. »

KJV ¹⁸ And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.

BCC ¹⁹ Et Laban dit : « Mieux vaut te la donner que la donner à un autre ; reste avec moi. »

KJV ¹⁹ And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me.

VULC ¹⁹ Respondit Laban : Melius est ut tibi eam dem quam alteri viro : mane apud me.

WLC ¹⁹ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָבָ֗ן ט֚וֹב תִּתִּ֣י אֹתָ֣הּ לָ֔ךְ מִתִּתִּ֥י אֹתָ֖הּ לְאִ֣ישׁ אַחֵ֑ר שְׁבָ֖ה עִמָּדִֽי׃

BCC ²⁰ Et Jacob servit pour Rachel sept années, et elles furent à ses yeux comme quelques jours, parce qu'il l'aimait. Jacob dit à Laban :

KJV ²⁰ And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

VULC ²⁰ Servivit ergo Jacob pro Rachel septem annis : et videbantur illi pauci dies præ amoris magnitudine.

WLC ²⁰ וַיַּעֲבֹ֧ד יַעֲקֹ֛ב בְּרָחֵ֖ל שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים וַיִּהְי֤וּ בְעֵינָיו֙ כְּיָמִ֣ים אֲחָדִ֔ים בְּאַהֲבָת֖וֹ אֹתָֽהּ׃

BCC ²¹ « Donne-moi ma femme, car mon temps est accompli, et j'irai vers elle. »

KJV ²¹ And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her.

VULC ²¹ Dixitque ad Laban : Da mihi uxorem meam : quia jam tempus impletum est, ut ingrediar ad illam.

WLC ²¹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֤ב אֶל־ לָבָן֙ הָבָ֣ה אֶת־ אִשְׁתִּ֔י כִּ֥י מָלְא֖וּ יָמָ֑י וְאָב֖וֹאָה אֵלֶֽיהָ׃

BCC ²² Laban réunit tous les gens du lieu et fit un festin ;

KJV ²² And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast.

KJV ²³ And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.

BCC ²⁴ Et Laban donna sa servante Zelphi pour servante à Lia, sa fille.

KJV ²⁴ And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid.

VULC ²⁴ dans ancillam filiæ, Zelpham nomine. Ad quam cum ex more Jacob fuisset ingressus, facto mane vidit Liam :

WLC ²⁴ וַיִּתֵּ֤ן לָבָן֙ לָ֔הּ אֶת־ זִלְפָּ֖ה שִׁפְחָת֑וֹ לְלֵאָ֥ה בִתּ֖וֹ שִׁפְחָֽה׃

BCC ²⁵ Le matin venu voilà que c'était Lia. Et Jacob dit à Laban : « Que m'as-tu fait ? N'est-ce pas pour Rachel que j'ai servi chez toi ? Pourquoi m'as-tu trompé ? » Laban répondit :

KJV ²⁵ And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me?

VULC ²⁵ et dixit ad socerum suum : Quid est quod facere voluisti ? nonne pro Rachel servivi tibi ? quare imposuisti mihi ?

WLC ²⁵ וַיְהִ֣י בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְהִנֵּה־ הִ֖וא לֵאָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־ לָבָ֗ן מַה־ זֹּאת֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ לִּ֔י הֲלֹ֤א בְרָחֵל֙ עָבַ֣דְתִּי עִמָּ֔ךְ וְלָ֖מָּה רִמִּיתָֽנִי׃

BCC ²⁶ « Ce n'est point l'usage dans notre pays de donner la cadette avant l'aînée.

KJV ²⁶ And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn.

VULC ²⁶ Respondit Laban : Non est in loco nostro consuetudinis, ut minores ante tradamus ad nuptias.

WLC ²⁶ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָבָ֔ן לֹא־ יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה כֵ֖ן בִּמְקוֹמֵ֑נוּ לָתֵ֥ת הַצְּעִירָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י הַבְּכִירָֽה׃

BCC ²⁷ Achève la semaine de celle-ci, et nous te donnerons aussi l'autre pour le service que tu feras encore chez moi pendant sept autres années. »

KJV ²⁷ Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.

VULC ²⁷ Imple hebdomadam dierum hujus copulæ : et hanc quoque dabo tibi pro opere quo serviturus es mihi septem annis aliis.

WLC ²⁷ מַלֵּ֖א שְׁבֻ֣עַ זֹ֑את וְנִתְּנָ֨ה לְךָ֜ גַּם־ אֶת־ זֹ֗את בַּעֲבֹדָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעֲבֹ֣ד עִמָּדִ֔י ע֖וֹד שֶֽׁבַע־ שָׁנִ֥ים אֲחֵרֽוֹת׃

BCC ²⁸ Jacob fit ainsi, et il acheva la semaine de Lia ; puis Laban lui donna pour femme Rachel sa fille.

KJV ²⁸ And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.

VULC ²⁸ Acquievit placito : et hebdomada transacta, Rachel duxit uxorem :

WLC ²⁸ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ יַעֲקֹב֙ כֵּ֔ן וַיְמַלֵּ֖א שְׁבֻ֣עַ זֹ֑את וַיִּתֶּן־ ל֛וֹ אֶת־ רָחֵ֥ל בִּתּ֖וֹ ל֥וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

BCC ²⁹ Et Laban donna sa servante Bala pour servante à Rachel, sa fille.

KJV ²⁹ And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid.

VULC ²⁹ cui pater servam Balam tradiderat.

WLC ²⁹ וַיִּתֵּ֤ן לָבָן֙ לְרָחֵ֣ל בִּתּ֔וֹ אֶת־ בִּלְהָ֖ה שִׁפְחָת֑וֹ לָ֖הּ לְשִׁפְחָֽה׃

BCC ³⁰ Jacob alla aussi vers Rachel et il l'aima aussi plus que Lia ; il servit encore chez Laban sept autres années.

KJV ³⁰ And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years.

VULC ³⁰ Tandemque potitus optatis nuptiis, amorem sequentis priori prætulit, serviens apud eum septem annis aliis.

WLC ³⁰ וַיָּבֹא֙ גַּ֣ם אֶל־ רָחֵ֔ל וַיֶּאֱהַ֥ב גַּֽם־ אֶת־ רָחֵ֖ל מִלֵּאָ֑ה וַיַּעֲבֹ֣ד עִמּ֔וֹ ע֖וֹד שֶֽׁבַע־ שָׁנִ֥ים אֲחֵרֽוֹת׃

BCC ³¹ Yahweh vit que Lia était haïe, et il la rendit féconde, tandis que Rachel était stérile.

KJV ³¹ And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren.

VULC ³¹ Videns autem Dominus quod despiceret Liam, aperuit vulvam ejus, sorore sterili permanente.

WLC ³¹ וַיַּ֤רְא יְהוָה֙ כִּֽי־ שְׂנוּאָ֣ה לֵאָ֔ה וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־ רַחְמָ֑הּ וְרָחֵ֖ל עֲקָרָֽה׃

BCC ³² Lia conçut et enfanta un fils, et elle le nomma Ruben, car elle dit : « Yahweh a regardé mon affliction ; maintenant mon mari m'aimera. »

KJV ³² And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.

VULC ³² Quæ conceptum genuit filium, vocavitque nomen ejus Ruben, dicens : Vidit Dominus humilitatem meam : nunc amabit me vir meus.

WLC ³² וַתַּ֤הַר לֵאָה֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ רְאוּבֵ֑ן כִּ֣י אָֽמְרָ֗ה כִּֽי־ רָאָ֤ה יְהוָה֙ בְּעָנְיִ֔י כִּ֥י עַתָּ֖ה יֶאֱהָבַ֥נִי אִישִֽׁי׃

BCC ³³ Elle conçut encore et enfanta un fils, et elle dit : « Yahweh a entendu que j'étais haïe, et il m'a encore donné celui-là ». Et elle le nomma Siméon.
